Court of Talons

Rate this book
For twenty-one years, Talia of the Tenth House has been her house’s deepest shame. Now, she’s their last hope.

Each year at the Tournament of Gold, first-blooded and firstborn male warriors battle alongside their massive, otherworldly monsters for fame and power. But when Talia’s beloved younger brother is murdered on his way to the tournament—and his beast unexpectedly bonds with Talia—all hope for the Tenth is lost.

The powerful, arrogant, and dangerously seductive Fortiss of the First House would never let a woman vie for a seat on the Court of Talons. He might also be her brother’s killer. Desperate for answers and to protect her house, Talia assumes her brother’s identity and enters the tournament.

But beneath the pomp and glory of this year’s battles, Talia discovers a dark conspiracy carefully crafted to destroy the entire realm. In an ever-more-deadly dance across gilded ballrooms and brutal fighting pits, she must sacrifice her heart, her freedom, and even the precious, mystical bond she’s formed with her glorious monster to win at all costs.

Because only Talia understands the truth:
If she’s discovered … she dies.
If she loses … she dies.
And if she doesn’t stop the evil screaming toward them through the shadows ... everyone dies.

༉‧₊˚. « The way of the warrior is death. » ・₊✧

Happy publication day to Court of Talons by Jennifer Chance!

i actually really enjoyed this book!! at first, it was a little slow-paced and i wasn’t sure if it would get more interesting. however, the more i read, the more connected i felt to the plot and the characters 🥹

in the book our female main character, Talia of the Tenth House, tries to seek revenge for her brother’s death. her brother, Merritt, gets killed on their journey to a tournament but his Divh (it’s basically a creature bonded to warriors) ends up bonding with Talia. The problem is that women are not allowed to bond with Divhs. the penalty for it is death.

talia decides to join the Tournament of Gold disguised as merritt, in order to find his killer and protect her house by finding new soldiers they lost in the melee they faced.

in this book, i loved so many characters. first of all, Caleb was such an amazing character. he was wholesome and sometimes very funny. i had fun reading his scenes. Nazar was the wise character in the story and i loved the way he supported the fmc.

Fortiss was such a charming character. i fell in love. i think i need more fortiss content in the next books!!

Gent, Talia’s Divh, was so cute. i love him too much 🤧 i think he might be my favorite character because the way he protected Talia. Gent needs to be protected at all costs 🫂

i loved the way this book represents women and their power. it was great to see the fmc fighting and seeing how powerful she can be.

additionally, i liked the descriptive language and the dialogues. the story flowed very well.

overall, this was a great read and i can’t wait to read more of this series! i really want to see what happens next in talia’s story <3

ᯓᡣ𐭩 quotes:

« I’ve already had the pleasure of you running away from me once, Lady Talia. I have no wish to repeat that experience. »

« I know what it’s like to be the one in the shadows, hoping desperately no one noticed me— but wanting to be noticed all the same. »

« You’re holding yourself in a grip of iron. Be as a river, flowing from one movement into the other. To be tight is to let your enemy see that you aren’t prepared. »

« You are in danger, Talia. Everything about you is danger. So beautiful, so fierce. »

« You are Talia of the Tenth House, first-blooded and firstborn. As such, you will fight with power and with honor, and with the strength your blood has given you. »

« To beat one man means you could beat many, if your gaze is true and your heart ready. »

༉‧₊˚. « Great warriors fight with their minds. With their spirit and their hearts, yes, but mostly with their minds. » ♡₊˚ 🦢・₊✧

“the way of warrior is death”

This book has given me Mulan vibes. I had a great time reading this book. I will admit it took a while to get into it. The beginning it’s a bit boring but it started to pick up quite quickly which I really liked about this book. The whole concept of this story is quite unique and entertaining to read about. I do wish that there was a bit more on the tournament.

: ̗̀➛ Talia
She’s such a strong protagonist. I was rooting for her since she got branded with a Divh. I loved the way this book has represented Talia power, it was really great to see the fmc fighting and showing her full power.

: ̗̀➛ Gent
This lovely gentlemen honestly warmed my heart. The way her protected Talia honestly warmed my heart.

: ̗̀➛ Caleb
He was such a lovely side character to read about. He showed that no matter what has happened in life, you don’t need it to slow down your life. I loved how he stuck by Talia and didn’t abandon her.

: ̗̀➛ Fortiss
I’m hoping that we’ll get more of him in the next book since he somehow found his way to warm my heart.

: ̗̀➛ Nazar
He is definitely a wise character with a lot of secrets. I really loved the way he supported the fmc but as well as that he also didn’t give her straight answers.

I’m really excited to see how the second book will go!

Talia is the firstborn daughter of the Tenth House who in a Mulan-esque fashion, has to disguise herself as a man in order to take her younger brother Merrick’s place after he’s killed in order to protect her house and bring it glory. Fortiss is the son of the First House and a respected fighter who finds himself enamored by Talia and with every moment they share, Talia struggles to keep her 2 identities separate and hidden. in this strongly male dominated society the first born sons are bonded to these magical beasts called Divh’s who assist them in battle, so when Merrick’s divh connects to Talia, she can’t believe it cause women aren’t allowed to have one and it’s never happened before in general.

i loved Talia, she’s so strong, fierce and overall easy to root for but she also makes mistakes and isn’t automatically a skilled fighter and she works hard to become a warrior in her own right which i found extremely admirable. the side characters were all well fleshed out too and Talia’s squire Caleb must be protected at all costs. it was nice to see some diversity in the characters and i was interested in the mystery of who was behind Merrick’s murder. Talia’s divh Gent is so precious despite being very powerful, i was living for their connection and them fighting alongside eachother.

i was not expecting to love this but im a sucker for tournaments and found family, so i grew more and more invested with each page i read. the world building was unique and although the romance was minimal, there was enough ground work for me to like Talia and Fortiss together. i can’t wait to read the sequel cause that ending battle sequence was truly epic and im already attached to all the characters and their divh’s.

many thanks to NetGalley, the author and Xpresso Book Tours for the arc, all opinions are my own.

*Thoughts*

Court of Talons is the first installment in author Jennifer Chance's Fang & Fire series. 21-year-old Talia is a first-born female child to the Tenth House in a world where only first born sons are valued. She has no rights. She is less than nothing to her father, and he is happily within his rights to send her off to another House in order to marry the heir of the House. Her younger brother Merritt is the pride of the family because he, not Talia, is the bonded warrior to a Giant Divh, an otherworldly monster that the men can bond with and then summon at will to battle.

I really enjoyed this book. The world building and descriptions was on point. I felt like I was seated watching the battles or there with them. I thought the magic was unique and was an interesting concept. I was, however, very aggravated at how patriarchal everything was. I know this was to build up the development of the FMC, but still. She is a bada** and really mad enough apologies for it. I loved that! The side characters were well written. I loved Caleb. I do think that some will get more of a back story in the second book. This is the same case with the romance. It was minimal. I am hoping this continues to develop in book two.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a copy of this ARC!

I think I'm in the minority here but I didn't love this book, which I'll get to later in the review. But first, to give an overview:

The concept of Court of Talons is unique. The world building is done well; it's thorough but easy to understand, so I was able to get oriented in the book pretty quickly. Upon the death of her brother, Merritt, Talia assumes his identity and enters a competition to win soldiers and glory for her house (the Tenth House). The society is heavily male-dominated and Talia's success depends on her being able to masquerade as Merritt, who is the heir to the Tenth House. This is especially important with Fortiss, who met Talia right before Merritt died.

Talia takes on Merritt's Divh: Divhs are giant and powerful creatures that their owners can summon to wield using a mind-link. So yes, the premise is undoubtedly fascinating. It had similar vibes to Fourth Wing and especially Heavenbreaker in the way Talia interacts with and controls her Divh. In all three books, you see the main character navigating a newfound mind connection with a creature and bonding, training and fighting. There is also a shared theme of corruption among those in power and looming rebellions. Unfortunately, this book didn't deliver in the way that other, similar books did for me.

The plot was fast-paced and captivating in some parts but dragged on in other parts, such as during some of the trial games. The book might have benefitted if the stakes were a bit higher for the tournament and the consequences more dire.

The writing felt juvenile and clunky at times-- lots of exclamation points and dialogue that felt like it should've been an inner monologue instead. (Side note: the amount of times that the phrase "For all that [insert rest of sentence]" is written is kind of out of control; basically every other page. But this is just me being nit picky).

The romantic subplot was also lacking. I didn't see a deep chemistry between Talia and Fortiss and when things started to heat up it came out of left field. I was left wondering where in the world the things Fortiss was saying even came from because their interactions had been so limited.

I did really enjoy the side characters -- especially Caleb! He stole the show in every scene he was in and I loved how he treated Talia. Fortiss' character needed much more depth and I didn't feel much towards him. But Talia was a strong female character driven by revenge and rage, which I always love. Overall, it was an interesting premise but I didn't fully connect with the book.

NA Post Apocalyptic Fantasy
Coming of age
Patriarchal society
Twelfth night reimagining
Warrior FMC
Magical beasts/familiars
Secret identity
House government system
Tournaments

I just wish there had been a world map in my eARC.

This was an amazingly unique magic system. I immediately was drawn into the world where men ruled with iron fist. I haven’t read many twelfth night/mulan reimagining, so I was pleasantly surprised by this fierce FMC. Talia witnessing her little brother being killed, takes up his identity to find the murderer and bring honor and vengeance to her house was a great background story for the FMC.

I enjoyed the Divh and look forward to the back story and further worldbuilding when it comes to understanding them better. The side characters were well conceived and brought so much heart to the story. I find it still unclear the structure of the world outside of the tournament, but I’m sure that the next book will widen the lense of the book to give us a fuller picture.

Modern language and phrases at times, but the writing style was easy to read and get drawn into.

The love story was a little too insta for me. Claiming an intense connection with very little interactions or knowledge of each other.

I’m excited to see where this story goes.

Thank you NetGalley and Oliver Herber Books for an eARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

I received this book as an ARC and really enjoyed this story!

I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book. However, I flew through the chapters as I followed Talia’s story. I found her to be an endearing FMC with a fiery spirit.

Gent was my absolute favorite and I loved how he progressed through the tournament.

I look forward to book 2 and continuing the journey of the book!

Loved it!
This book follows Talia of the 10th House and her first foray outside of where she grew up as firstborn daughter with a jerk of a dad and her little brother. It explores the realm, politics, relationship with the otherworldly creatures called Divh, and more. (Trying to avoid spoilers!)
I liked that you learn about the world alongside the characters, the world building was very well done.
The characters were well developed and memorable. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the book, there certainly weren’t any dull moments. I am looking forward to the next installment!

Court of Talons is an entertaining story reminiscent of Mulan. A woman in a male dominated society takes a position as a warrior under disguise. Dressed as her brother, Talia, enters a competition with battles complete with magical divhs (creatures). After exposing corruption, the book ends with the FMC plotting how to continue solving the problems facing her world.

The book was an entertaining blend of fantasy with a small twist of romance that I hope will continue to grow in future books!

Good writing, slow to get into. Story line was worth the read, not your typical “ court “ book. Limited on the romance, there was some but was not the main focus. Strong female lead.

I received an ARC from netgalley for an honest review.

Rating: 3/5 stars

The plot of this story is very like others that are on the book market already - tournaments, houses, men dominated world with a FMC trying to prove herself. The thing that did stand out was the Divh, which was a great idea but came off more as a cutesy bff rather than massive monsters.

The romance was subpar as the FMC and MMC had maybe three conversations before they were kissing and admitting they couldnt be away from each other. MMC was written very surface level. FMC is just another typically written girl who just wants to fight and prove others wrong.

I did like the writing style, wording, and sentence structure of the author which is something that I struggle with as I read high fantasy as well so coming back to YA/NA fantasy can be tricky.

I would like to thank Net Galley and Oliver Heber Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

We follow along Talia who has to act as her brother, who dies at the beginning of the book while travelling, in a world where women are second class citizens and fight in a tournament in his stead.

I managed to read until the 40% mark but this book just didn't do it for me. The idea of separated houses, tournament till or almost till death, a fragile looking but really strong deep down FMC and the ominous vibes you get from characters is unfortunate way overdone at this point.

I also didn't get pulled in to the world at all.

ARC Read – Court of Talons
Solid 4.5 stars (I was given a copy of the book, for an honest review)

Yes, I am a sucker for a beautiful cover. Some of them deliver and some don’t. But this one, this one lived up to it, in my eyes! There’s nothing better than going into a book blind; I don’t read the blurb; I just start reading. And I love a strong FMC, which you get a sense about Talia from the start. Usually books ease into the tale, but this one gives you the one, two punch right off, so I knew I was in good company because this one wasn’t going to hold back (or so I hoped!)

Unreasoning fear jolts through me as Merritt races so thoughtlessly toward the open air. He’ll be fine, I know he’ll be fine, he’s done this stupid trick a hundred times. Running at his Divh, knowing it will do anything he asks, and yet…
My heart is pounding so loud as Merritt jumps, I barely notice the flash of brightness in the air beyond him, the stab of light racing through the sky. It looks almost like…but no, that’s impossible, that cannot be.
Merritt!
I try to cry out his name, the warning, but my breathe stalls in my throat, my hands lift up, my blood congeals. Time seems to rush too quickly, only to stop, halting completely as I lurch forward, too late-too late!
The stab of light is an arrow.
No sooner do I see it than it’s already reached its target, already ripped into flesh and muscle, piercing through my brother’s back and out his chest, Merritt’s body convulsing midair as his Divh’s roar shakes the whole world.
“No-“ I start to run. Gent leaps. Its massive sage green paw swipes for my brother-swipes and misses, the Divh’s immense body also jerking mid-reach, mirroring Merritt’s agony-
No! My mind refuses to accept, my eyes refuse to see, every inch of me bursting with the wrongness, the impossibility of this scene. I race on, heedless of the terrain, tripping over my cloak, my hair, my own feet until I reach the promontory’s cliff.
I scream with helpless outrage as the mighty Divh makes a final heaving grab for my brother. The goliath and the boy collide together beneath the bold and brilliant sun, both of them twisting, turning, tumbling as they…
Fall.

After reading that, it was all over for me. It was a race to the end, to find out how Talia was going to enact her revenge on who killed her brother, but more importantly, why? Here she is, getting married off to another House and she’s suddenly, on the most important quest of her life. Then, throw in the fact that she accidently becomes bonded with Gent (at least a more giant version of him,) in Mulan-style has to adapt & play acts as her now gone brother, rolls up to Trilion & this tournament, that all of a sudden has all of these over the top never before offered prizes AND the person she thinks murdered her brother happens to be the nephew of the First House? Yeah, there’s a lot going on in this story. We all know there’s a darker conspiracy at play here, but what exactly is it and who will it truly benefit?

Story is fast paced, with great characters, like the one-armed kid Caleb (who is amazing) and then there’s Nazar, the straightlaced Priest of Light, but there’s something else there. Hidden I swear!
So, I encourage all to judge a book my it’s cover. Well, at least judge THIS book by its cover – by picking it up and reading it. Because the more people read & support it, the quicker the second book will come out…that’s how it works, right?

"Court of Talons" by Jennifer Chance is an exhilarating fantasy novel that grips you from the very first page and doesn’t let go. Set in a world where honor, power, and survival are dictated by a brutal tournament, this book delivers an unforgettable story filled with action, intrigue, and emotional depth.

Talia of the Tenth House, the protagonist, is a refreshing and compelling heroine who defies convention in a male-dominated world. Her journey from her house's deepest shame to its last hope is both inspiring and heart-wrenching. The stakes are incredibly high as she disguises herself as her slain brother to enter the deadly Tournament of Gold, where powerful warriors and their monstrous companions fight for glory. Talia's fierce determination, coupled with her vulnerability, makes her a character readers can’t help but root for. Her bond with her brother's beast is one of the most captivating elements of the story, creating a dynamic relationship that is both mystical and profoundly emotional.

The plot of "Court of Talons" is intricately woven with layers of mystery, suspense, and unexpected twists. From the lavish ballrooms to the brutal fighting pits, the settings are vividly described, immersing readers in a world that is both beautiful and deadly. The tension is palpable as Talia navigates this treacherous terrain, facing not only the threat of discovery but also the looming possibility of death at every turn. The addition of a conspiracy that threatens the entire realm adds depth to the narrative, raising the stakes and driving the story forward at a relentless pace.

The antagonist, Fortiss of the First House, is a brilliantly crafted character—powerful, arrogant, and dangerously seductive. His complex relationship with Talia adds an extra layer of tension to the plot, leaving readers constantly guessing his true intentions. Is he merely a rival, or could he be the one responsible for her brother’s death? This ambiguity keeps readers on edge, eagerly turning pages to uncover the truth.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its world-building. The realm in which "Court of Talons" takes place is richly developed, with a fascinating social hierarchy, political intrigue, and a unique system of monsters bonded to warriors. This detailed world-building adds depth and texture to the story, allowing readers to become fully immersed in the epic battles, strategic maneuvering, and emotional undercurrents that define the plot.

Overall, "Court of Talons" is a masterful blend of fantasy, action, and romance. It’s a story about courage, identity, and the sacrifices one must make for the greater good. Fans of strong female protagonists, intricate plots, and immersive fantasy worlds will find this book impossible to put down. Talia’s quest to uncover the truth, protect her house, and save her realm is a thrilling ride that leaves you breathless and eagerly awaiting the next installment. Highly recommended for all lovers of epic fantasy!

This book was not at all what I expected, there was a lot of fighting but in a decent amount, a beautiful bond with a terraying creature, friendships and loyalty and a small romance. I had a lot of fun reading this book and am looking forward to the continuation of the series. The book does not really end in a cliffhanger, so Im even more interested to know where the story goes next. Recommend to readers who want more fantasy than romance, but with struggles of a woman in a male dominated and ruled world

Qick content list:
1st person single POV
woman poses as man
small romance subplot
oppressed women
bond between warrior and creature/animal

What I liked:
- the bond between the warrior and the creature was just beautiful. The Divhs happiness and how it cared for its (sorry his) human was nicely done and I didnt see myself caring so much for them when they were first introduced but it was extremely nicely done
- the FMC is nice, not sassy, but fierce and wants to fight for what is right. She is smart and figures out how to handle herself in this hostile world
- the companions of our FMC are nice additions, accept her and support her and I love them both
- most (though not all) fighting scenes were written in such an engaging way I almost mist my bus stop.. I couldnt put it down when the Divsh fought each other and had a blast. I usually dont particularly enjoy fight scenes so thats a huge plus

What I didnt like:
- the reveal that shes posining as a woman to the "authorities" was kind of anticlimatic? I dont exactly know what I was expecting but it was not just some talking and then some doom that from the looks of it would have happened either way?
- the romance was so odd, I totally see how the idea of a romance makes the whole book better. How the MMC felt betrayed at finding out her identity and all that comes with it. But there was not really a build up, they just met a few times and that was it? And he recognized her by touch? Sorry but the dude has so many women on his lab I doubt he can tell from one hand...
- some of the lore was either lost on me or just not explained well enough, though this is something that might just get more detailed in the next book when we get explanations for what happened at the end
- there is a point in the book where it says that at a certain "task" women used to be better and far suprerior to men... I dont like this kind of stuff. I get it, this world is mysogynistic and we want to reverse it somehow and have women have their place but I just dont feel like thats the solution. Might be more of a personal issue tho

Thank you to Netgalley and Oliver Heber Books for the ARC. My opinions are my own.

Features:
Woman pretends to be man for the plot
Misogyny in the worldbuilding
Undercooked romance
First-Person POV
"Headstrong Female lead"
Monster / Human Bond (not the romance, sorry)

I like a little romantasy in my books, it is such a fun type of book to read. However, I think this should have been marketed more as "a cup of overloaded worldbuilding with a half teaspoon of undercooked romance". Let's start with the bad and end on a high note.

The romance was not it. There was no proper chemistry, it felt insta-lovey (this can work, but not in this one), not enough time spent between characters before we "got into it". If it is marketed as a romantasy, it needs more time to actually develop the romance. You can't serve me a raw steak and say it is medium rare. The spice also didn't do much for me, and I am usually not picky with it.

Worldbuilding based on misogyny has become such an ick for me. I think the fact that our own real world has this exact set-up just makes me tired when I see it in fantasy. There are attempts in the book to show that it is reversible, or at least possible to make it better for the women. But it shouldn't have been there at all. It is such blatant "women should know their place" vibes. The book could work perfectly fine without it, or at least done it more subtly and elegantly.

I will put the writing and my problems with the main character in the same paragraph because they are related. Some main characters can work as annoying brats, our main character here doesn not work as a brat. I didn't want her to succeed, or get her way. I was tired of listening to her inner monologues where all she can do is try to prove others wrong or prove herself right. The writing didn't do her credit either, as it felt very juvenile. This reads like middle grade in writing, and adult in content.

Over to the good ...

Fight scenes and anything with the Divhs is fun. Monsters are always fun, monsters bonded to people is especially fun. It all felt so dynamic. Combat can be so hard to properly write, but the author really nailed it for me. If the whole book was focused on the Divhs and the fighting I would give it a higher score.

Final ranking and star rating?
2 stars, D tier. I think my biggest problem is that I have read stories like this before, and may be burned out. Even so, the romance is lacking, and for plenty of people the misogyny might come off as unnecessary and off-handed. It has the bones for a good story, one I might like. But today, and as it stands, it is not it for me.

Court of Talons
by Jennifer Chance

Rating 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book was so incredibly good!

I've been in a reading slump for the past few months and have just been reading books that felt like a chore to get through but this book absolutely gave me that reading spark that I haven't felt in a long time.

A Court of Talons follows the story of Talia who lives in a civilisation known as the Procterate, made up of 12 noble houses. Long ago there was a war in their world between the imperial city and the Western realms, close to defeat the Imperial city sought the help of another world made up of mythical , awe inspiring creatures known as Divh's. With these Divh's the Imperialists were able to subdue the West but suffered great losses. They decided to leave behind a small force to protect them from the West and retreat back to their city. 300 years passed without them returning and the Procterate and it's 12 houses were born. Talia is of the Tenth house and the book begins with her on her way to the twelfth house to get married to it's child heir, she is accompanied by her brother Merritt who is on his way to the renowned Tournament of Gold to buy soldiers for their house. But on the way their caravan is ambushed and her brother is killed. He dies in Talia's arms and his band which connects him to his Divh slides onto Talia's arm. She then decides to go to the tournament herself in an attempt to carry out her brothers mission and find his killer. But when she gets there she realises that her brothers attack was part of a grander more sinister scheme and the identity, honor and safety of not just her house but the entire Procterate is in jeopardy.

Firstly the world building in this book is amazing, by the first chapter the basic scene is set and the reader understands the background without reading laborious paragraphs. Talia is also from a rural house and in the Procterate where woman are treated as second class citizens and denied the same rights as their male counterparts, so Talia was denied access to information about their world and history so as she learns , the reader is able to learn with her.

What I also loved about this book was that it was Talia's story and nothing not even the romance distracted the reader from that fact. The romance was also gradual and didn't overpower the other plot points, Talia was able to reason and think rationally and didn't allow the romance aspect to distract or dissuade her purpose which is rare in a FMC. The relationship between her and her Divh was also a heartwarming part of the story.

Overall this book has good world building , an interesting plot , plot-twists , romance , found family and was such an enjoyable read for me.

Court of Talons is the first book in the new Fang and Fire series and I just loved it! Talia is a first-born female child in a world where only first born sons are valued. When the story begins, her only worth to her father is via marital alliance. As such, she and her brother are pretending that she is younger and he is actually the first born. Why? Because in her world, only the first-born son is able to bond with their Divh, an otherworldly monster that the men can bond with and then summon at will to battle. Think of it as if the elite warriors of the region each have a single Legendary Pokemon they could call to battle for them if needed. Sadly, Talia’s brother is killed when they are traveling to the region’s seat of power and for some reason, the Divh bonds with Talia. This is completely unheard of and if discovered, her punishment would be death, so Talia immediately goes into hiding and tries to masquerade as her brother. She lives each day in fear of discovery, and her only hope is to return home with warriors to protect her family while she accepts whatever punishment her father deems appropriate. Somehow, her plans get a little derailed and she ends up entering into a tournament, hoping to find answers to who killed her brother.

I really liked Talia, she was born into an extremely oppressive society and yet she hasn’t completely accepted her fate. She trained in secret where she could and it really helped her when she stepped into her brother’s shoes. Caleb is awesome and I can’t wait to see what he does in the next book. I liked Fortiss as well and was glad he didn’t disappoint me in the end. Gent was such a sweetie and I really loved him, to the point that I felt really bad for him that he had to fight, but I’m sure the author will work that out by the end of the series. The world building in this book is excellent and while this book ended on a very positive and hopeful note, there's still clearly quite a bit more to explore in this world. As such I cannot wait for the next book to come out!

When I think of Jennifer Chance, I think of Academy UF, PNR, that kind of thing. One thing I didn’t connect her with (or Jenn, for that matter) is High Fantasy. Well, SURPRISE!!!

I can’t believe what a fantastic storyline she created, written around an inventive world with both loveable and fierce creatures and exciting heroes and villains. Once I got started, there simply was no way to stop. I lost a lot of sleep with this one!

Talia is everything you’d want in a heroine. She’s a strong, creative, and loving woman who gets caught up in something women of her world simply did not engage in. She has difficulty adjusting to this new outlook, but she has help. She has Nazar, a priest of the Light, and Caleb, a one-armed boy on his way toward becoming a loyal, honorable man. She also meets Fortiss, an attractive stranger who is also a warrior. But it remains to be seen what part he will play in her crazy new life.

I don’t want to go into too much detail because I don’t want to give anything away. The blurb says enough. Suffice it to say, there is tons of excitement, heartache, danger, and, of course, heat. The story flows in such a way as to make it difficult to put down. I could only do so when my eyes got too blurry to continue.

High/Epic Fantasy is probably one of the most challenging genres to write. You have to create a whole new world with characters that fit that world and a storyline that makes sense. You have to build a history and a background to give a foundation. And you have to make that storyline exciting. None of this is an easy task. But Jennifer Chance (aka Jenn Stark) pulled it off and with her very first foray into high/epic fantasy! I can’t wait for book two!

Incredibly well done, Jenn! Kudos! Exceptionally well done!!

Court of Talons - Twelfth Night meets Fourth Wing

The Plot: Jennifer Chance's Court of Talons definitely lived up to its description. We follow Talia, the firstborn female of the Tenth House, who needs to pretend to be the younger sibling to survive. Male first born are bonded to Divhs (creatures from another plain) and are called warrior knights. These warrior knights are part of the protectorate compete in an annual meet to earn a seat in the Court of Talons. En route to her fiance's house, Talia and her brother Merritt are besieged by marauders and Merritt succumbs to his wounds. Driven by sadness, Talia accidentally bonds with the Divh, Gent and needs to travel to the protectorate in his guise and bring honor to her house.

The Characters: Talia is a gem, coming to her own, learning the intrigues of a new political system that she was previously shunned from. Nazar as the mysterious priest of Light (Brom from Eragon, if you will), who guides her with his Confucius reminiscent sayings. Caleb, the one armed, street urchin who owes his life to Talia and is their eyes and ears. Fortiss, the tall, dark handsome heir to the throne who is not bonded to a Divh - his escapades with Talia and Merritt are the comedic interlude to the plot.

Overall the books is an amazing kickstart to the series with book 2 coming soon. The pace is slow in the beginning to establish the principles, codes and magic governing this world. The political machinations and social structures are beautifully rendered and Talia is a lodestone to test the boundaries of their systems.

Thank you to NetGalley and Oliver Heber Books for this opportunity and a salute to Jennifer Chance on a rocking start to a splendid series!

"The way of the warrior is death"
Book Synopsis:
***For twenty-one years, Talia of the Tenth House has been her house’s deepest shame.

Because only Talia understands the

If she’s discovered…she dies.

If she loses…she dies.

And if she doesn’t stop the evil screaming toward them through the shadows…everyone dies.****

Well wasn't that just just intriguing? Yes you say? Well grab this book then. While as it stands with book one there was not a whole lot of romance this is the finding oneself stage and maybe in book two we will see our two love birds with more romance. The supporting characters are wonderful and if anything happens to them I will throw hands!! I am anxiously awaiting book two!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you, NetGalley.

For me, a solid 4.5 / 5. This book was surprisingly delightful. I am looking forward to the next installment.

What I liked:
- I like the main characters. Side characters could have been developed more, though.
- Caleb. Caleb is my absolute favourite! He is smart, clever, determined, courageous, funny, and full of life. I enjoyed all the scenes he was in.
- I absolutely loved the sense of despair, of impending doom and death from the third act (chapters 39-42). I felt completely hopeless alongside Talia
- When Talia finally realized "I am enough". Yeah, damn right you are!
- I got an emotional response to this book. It is a good sign; it is a sign of a good author who can draw me in when I get excited/afraid/teary-eyed for the characters.
- Chapter 43 was a wild ride.

What I did not like:
- I would have liked to have a map at the beginning to understand where all the Houses were.
- I still have unanswered questions: why did Talia pretend she was younger than Merritt? How are planes linked? How did Divhs and humans first connect; and for what purpose?
- The pacing was uneven. The book starts strong, slows to barely a crawl for almost 100 pages, then picks up. But when it picks up, oh my! It is fantastic!

What I am neutral about:
- The romance part. I don't know what Fortiss sees in Talia. He says he is drawn to her light, but I am unsure what it means. I would have liked for Fortiss to fall in love with Merritt, and then be confused about this new same-sex attraction. Let's see how this is approached in the next installment.

I would like to thank NetGalley and Oliver Heber Books for this ARC of Court of Talons
by Jennifer Chance in exchange for an honest review!

This was a really enjoyable read! I will say the beginning was slow and maybe some people might struggle to stick with the book. That I find to be a common situation in fantasy books. And as is the case with many others, Court of Talons absolutely picks up after the first few chapters.

The story was very engaging. The book has a Mulan-esque plot but with magic and beasts that I found to be really well-done. An intriguing set up turned into a thrilling plot.

The absolute best part of Court of Talons was the world building. If you would like to read a masterclass on fantasy world building, then this has got to be your next read.

The characters were pretty great too! All around I thought they were well-written. And I think Talia felt real. I understand her motivations which made her enjoyable. And the side characters definitely added to how much I liked this book.

There is a romance and a little bit of spice, but the romance is completely a subplot. And to be honest at this point I found the romance to be a tad bit subpar. I love the MMC, but did I think the chemistry for the main relationship was the best? Not so much. I hope for more development in this area in the future because there was definitely potential.

Like I said the beginning was slow, but this book definitely stuck the landing for the ending. I am excited for the next book!

If you’re looking for a really unique fantasy with a mystery full of suspenseful twists and turns, I definitely recommend Court of Talons!

I won this from a Goodreads giveaway.

I think Court Of Talons is an interesting book, but it needs some editing and more explanation. This will contain spoilers.

Talia is the first born daughter of the 10th kingdom, but she's treated like crap. She's being sold off to marriage because she is a girl and "worthless." Then their caravan is attacked, and her brother, Merritt, is killed. She takes his place and inherits his Divh, a giant creature that fights.

I had so many questions! How do the Divhs work? Why is it only men can use them? How can she look so much like her brother to take his place? I've seen many movies where the girl pretends to be the guy. But it's always really obvious. I can't believe everyone was fooled by this.

Talia had an instant attraction to Fotiss the man she thinks killed her brother. They flirt over and over again, and he claims she is beautiful but doesn't recognize her when she is dressed as Merritt. That was so unbelievable! Then, one of the few times they talked, they rushed to have sex. It was so weird. They had no connection or anything.

Then Talia/Merritt is training to fight with her Divh and bring honor to her house. But the plane in which she does that doesn't make much sense. I still don't understand who Gent (her Divh) is or what he does.

Caleb, her squire, was a fun side character. The concept was interesting, but it needed more explanation overall. There were many parts that dragged on but didn't add to the story at all. I'm not sure I'll read the next one.

This was pretty dang good and I had a good time reading this book - which is the whole point of reading for me.

I do think that the first few chapters were a big slow-going, the set-up did seem to drag. But I find that EXTREMELY common with fantasy books, so I can easily overlook a few slow chapters. And although those first few chapters were a bit slow, they did a good job setting up the world and what was going on without feeling too overwhelmingly info-dumpy. You got the information as you needed it and I appreciate that.

This is the first book in a series and you can tell that just based on the movement and development of the relationships in the books. (So I guess that would make this a slow-burn, but I am a big slow-burn lover, so that doesn't both me one bit!) I can definitely see the building blocks for future books and that makes me so excited!

And there's a tournament! I think that's all you need to know to want to pick up this book. I really enjoyed following the characters throughout that, especially Gent. I thought he was quite the fun character.

This feels almost like a Mulan retelling (I'm not sure if it's ever been advertised as such), with our main character disguising herself as a male warrior. And that is so much fun!

There's a touch mystery, magic and so much more. I get the feeling that I will be coming back for book 2!

Thanks to NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!

Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to review this book!

This book took me a bit longer to read than I expected, but wow, it started—and ended—on a strong note!

If you're familiar with the movie She’s the Man, this book feels similar, but swap the romantic comedy and football for political intrigue, magic, and suspense.

The world-building is incredible, detailed, and immersive. And the plot? Absolutely chef's kiss. There’s intrigue, a murder mystery, and a strong FMC. Talia’s development throughout the story is brilliant. We see a girl sent off to marry grow into a fierce warrior out of necessity. She learns to fight, to scheme, and excels at both. We also have strong secondary characters that I hope we will learn more, and see their story unfold in the next book.

While I appreciated that the story focused more on power struggles than romance, I did feel that Talia and Fortis's relationship was underdeveloped. Their chemistry seemed to come out of nowhere, and their connection formed too quickly considering how few interactions they shared. I would have loved to see more depth in their relationship, with more time for it to develop naturally. That said, this doesn’t take away too much from the overall enjoyment of the book.

For fans of fantasy centered on court politics and adventure, Court of Talons is an engaging read that delivers plenty of thrills. I’m definitely excited to see how the story unfolds in the next book!

I would like to thank the author and NetGalley for allowing me to ARC read this book.

I would give this book 10 stars if I could. I have told everyone I have talked to for the last couple weeks about this book. It is by far the best thing I have read in a long time with its original ideas and creativity.

As a kid Mulan was favorite Disney movie. This book is like a grown up Mulan with its own original ideas and world. I was worried that, like some new fantasy books, the world building would be confusing or sloppy. This was not the case. The author beautifully explained the world, ideas, and politics of this land. I found myself enchanted by the magic immediately and fell in love with the characters easily.

The main character was strong, beautiful, and fierce ;) and while it’s always refreshing to see a FMC like this, Talia was also relatively relatable. She doubted herself. She made mistakes. She is compassionate and strong. The way she interacted with the other characters made her impossible to dislike.

I really truly wish I could find something that I disliked to make this a more credible review. A minor plot hole, a character I hated, a misspelled word even. Alas, I could not. I simply loved this book and I cannot wait to read the next one.
