Taiga

Rate this book
Revenge is imperative ... Resisting each other is impossible ...

Seven has spent her life inside the gray, windowless walls of Taiga. She’s been taught to hate Purebloods with a fiery passion, but she’s learned to hate her captors all on her own. She dreams of revenge, of painting the walls with their blood.

When she finds herself outside unexpectedly, rolled out in a cage like a circus freakshow, things go sideways fast … but the voice in Seven’s head whispers one Mine

A few weeks later, back inside Taiga, the whisper repeats it. And the new hybrid it’s directed at seems very chummy with the head of Operation Stranger …

***

Jack wants the monster inside him gone. He never asked for this, he resents what he is becoming.

When Agent Baxter offers him a complete some small tasks, and the Operation will suppress Jack’s monster so he can return to his old life, he jumps at the opportunity.

But then his monster starts roaring Mine on repeat … and he can’t stop thinking about the tawny-skinned hybrid the monster is obsessing over.

Jack knows where that sort of attraction heads when you’re a Stranger—even a half-breed one. And it’s something he wants to avoid at all costs.

But when Jack and Seven are forced to face their connection, under the most horrific circumstances, they’re left with only two options.

Escape … or revenge …

There’s only one way they can have both—but can they work together, without succumbing to the call of their blood?

Layla has been writing stories ever since she could pick up a pencil and shape words. The most memorable works of her tween and teen years included a rap version of 'Little Red Riding Hood' and an embarrassingly spicy high school camp/murder mystery (which was possibly a sign of things to come).

Layla studied Communications at Newcastle University in NSW, Australia, and worked as a buyer and marketing coordinator in the education sector, before joining her husband in the family retail business. That's still her day job (she's very lucky her boss is pretty lenient, or she'd never get any writing done).

Layla lives on an acreage in regional NSW with her husband, two rambunctious children, four mostly feral cats, and an ancient German Shepherd who still thinks he's a puppy. Oh, and some angry Plovers that swoop her every spring without fail.

I got to alpha read Taiga and I’m so glad I got this opportunity. It was such an incredible read. I loved going on this journey with Jack and Seven. I felt every single emotion in this book you could possibly think of. Sadness, happiness, worry, excitement etc. Layla does an incredible job of writing a story in a way that makes you feel like you’re there with the characters. The twists and shocks were absolutely insane I couldn’t believe them. Nobody can write twists like Layla. I highly recommend picking up the first book, Greenrock, then Taiga. You won’t regret it.

For anyone on my friend’s list who reads my reviews, Greenrock is currently only $1.99 for a short time on Amazon and Taiga is up for pre order on Amazon for $4.99.
Layla is running an incentive atm over on her tiktok and Insta. Go check them out to win some cool prizes 😍 I promise you will love these books!!!

I had the absolute pleasure of alpha reading this book for Layla.

This is her best work yet. Layla just gets better and better with every single novel she writes. Greenrock was the first book I read from the author and since then she is hands down my favourite author.

Her writing is just so captivating and this book had me in a chokehold. The plot continuation from Greenrock was absolute perfection and from the very first page my jaw was on the floor.

I have to say that Jack was one of my least favourite characters in Greenrock but boy did he make a turnaround on this one! His relationship with Seven is just perfection.

I cried so many times in this one, so much emotion and so many heartbreaking scenes. Cliffhanger chapter endings. Character arcs that are some of the best ones I’ve ever read. The tropes! Oh boy… if you love a primal trope then get onto this one I think I died and went to heaven.

If I could give this 10 stars I would. I can’t wait to see this in reader’s hands they are going to LOVE it.

This may just be the best book Layla has written to date. i had the privilege of being a Beta reader for this book and i INHALED it, i read this big boy (655 kindle pages) in one single sitting. i HIGHLY recommend not only this book but the Renegade Strangers series as a whole.

Taiga is a direct continuation on from Greenrock (Book 1) and Greenrock must be read prior to this one to ensure there are no spoilers for the best reading experience.

i read Greenrock a week before Taiga to make sure everything about this storyline was fresh in my mind and i am so glad i did.

this book follows Seven and Jack (who we meet in book 1). Jack is definitely my favourite character from this book as well as his little friend IFYKYK 😈.

i think this series is definitely done well and the storyline for the plot and each character stays consistent which is great in a paranormal romance.

There are multiple POV’s, 18+ Spice, Vampires, Shifters and a few Trigger warnings which are essential to the story. please check these warnings and remember your mental health comes first!
July 18, 2024
Thank you so much Layla for the chance to beta for you again!! I’ll be as spoiler free as possible!!

I want to give all the stars!! Greenrock was my very first Layla Pine book and I was immediately sucked in and was unlike any story I had read before with Drinkers and Shifters. Throw in shady government agencies and lab experiments and you’re in for a wild ride!

Taiga did just that and more! Literally picking up from the cliffy in Greenrock and its heart pounding action, angst, twists, and turns all the way. She starts us off with the hardcore and wow factor and it never really lets up! Please check your tiggers because there are a lot of heavy hitting here!

Seven is a spunky 25 yo who has been through hell as a born-in facility shifter. Jack is a 18-19 yo virgin (yet not inexperienced in pleasure) hybrid, thrown right into the mix of dealing with being a shifter himself and the anger and hate he’s built up over all the betrayal and dealings from Greenrock.

We get to see Blaire, Roman, Ellis, and the whole gang, plus the parentals in the aftermath of Greenrock. The story is multiple POVs with each giving insight into the overall plot with Seven and Jack in FP and the others in TP POV. If you’re not used to it, it can throw you at first but it is easily read with no issues! We do get a good bit of new characters but I never felt like I didn’t know what was going on and Layla does a great job of helping us keep them straight.

When Seven and Jack realize they are to be Joined (mated), they fight the urges to complete the ritual as best they can. It was a slow burn, yet no shortage of dirty banter, and traveling the bases without the home run (though a “just the tip” action arises 😏). Their first time is perfect because of everything they’d been through. Definitely swoony, even with some primal shifter fun!

I had so many emotions through this book and it was sooo worth the wait and the ending had me screaming for what’s to come!!! I’m probably babbling at this point because I don’t know how else to describe without spoiling but will say this, READ THIS SERIES IMMEDIATELY!!

“Listen to me… Nothing they can do to me will ever keep me from you. I’m going to go back in there, and I’m going to make them pay. And I’m coming out the other side, with you, Jack. I will find you, no matter what.”

And I thought I loved the first book… Nothing could prepare me for the rollercoaster of emotions that I experienced while reading Taiga. This book starts off where Greenrock ended, with Jack gone and the others left reeling after the attack. This book focuses more on Jack and his story, and I loved his POV.

I love that the writing seemed to mature in this book. It was so well written, and I could feel the descriptions come to life, and the connections I developed in the first book made things so much more heart-wrenching and suspenseful and just generally made the book so much more satisfying to read. The spice in this book is absolutely on point, and Layla does an amazing job of highlighting the animalistic tendencies of the paranormals (and just generally, humans), especially when first Joined or mates are threatened.

All in all, this was an action-packed book and full of life, and I genuinely enjoyed every single moment of it. If you liked the first one, you will LOVE this.

I received an ARC of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was blessed to Recieve an ARC of Taiga and it did not disappoint. Layla Pine has this magical talent of writing books filled with drama, Plot Twists, Action and Romance. And of course loads of Spice.

Taiga is Book 2 in a series and it is quite important Read GreenRock first as it does pick up where we left off in Book 1. Please Read Trigger Warnings first as it does contain Sexual
Assault, Miscarriage, Torture and Violence.

Taiga Follows Jack and Seven who we met in Book 1, as they are being held by the Operative. Being a Hybrid raised in the Human world means Jack is new to all the Testing and Torture being done to all the Shifters held Captive.

The love story between Jack and Seven is not Easy as their blood calls for them to bond but both are afraid of the hurt they have seen that comes with the Joining.

I felt every emotion throughout, from anxiety, sadness, anger and happiness. Layla Pine has a Talent for really connecting you to the characters so you’re really going along for the ride with them.

That ending!!! I had a feeling Ellis would meet her mate in the Hot Bear Shifter. And OMG that will be one Sexy book to follow up after this Masterpiece.

OMG an amazing carry on from Greenrock. You start with the ending of Greenrock but from sevens point of view and the action goes on from there.

Paranormal, fantasy, strangers to lovers, secret government experimentation, experimentation on shifters, SA, shifters, found family, SFMC, fated mates, illusional transportation, resisting fate, virgin MMC, slow burn, spicy scenes, female rage. What more can we ask for with the great series.

When you are part of the secret government experimentation and you just want to get out and kill all those who have mentally and physically hurt you. How do you go about this.

When your fated mate is found in the same facility as you don’t realise that’s who they are. You will do anything to get out and save the ones you love.

This is book 2 of the Renegade Strangers series, and somehow, it was even better than Book One (Greenrock).

Taiga is a master peice, Layla combined, paranormal, dark romance, and mystery seamlessly and created a book that was unputdownable.

It was fast-paced, the spice was top-tier level, and the character and relationship development had me crying one minute and giggling the next.

I loved book 1, but Taiga blew it out of the water. This was honestly the best shifter-romance/dark romance book I've ever read!

Seven (FMC) has my heart and soul, and Jack (MMC) won me over when I didn't think it was possible.

I adored this book so much and I cannot wait for the next one; definitely read Greenrock first!! This book follows Jack and Seven, both being held in a compound set up to experiment on their capabilities ahead of one human man's plot to overthrow the coalition. Jack and Seven feel a pull toward one another that they both aim to avoid but can they?? I love this spicy paranormal shifter/vampy romance. Cannot wait for book 3!

Absolutely loved this ride. What an amazing sequel to Greenrock. From the minute I started reading I knew this would be a story I didn't want to put down, and boy this book did not disappoint.
My body emotionally reacted, in anger, in hatred, in pain, you name it, this is one emotional rollercoaster. A ride where you want to get to the end but at the same time you don't want it to stop!
And the ending! Another cliffhanger just leaving you begging for more right now!
Layla's writing is amazingly descriptive. She really makes you feel the emotions of the characters and certainly has you feeling very strongly about certain characters.
While this second instalment certainly gives you closure to one part of the journey, it perfectly sets up the next step, leaving you hanging to know what's going to happen next!
Brilliant! Loved it.

This book! This series! I can not describe the level of want for the next book or the characters to be real.

This is some or Laylas best work so far and if you have not read greenrock yet then where are you.

The banter in this is amazing, the feels are incredible, the "wtf" moments are on point.

If you are looking for your next paranormal shifter vampire human romance series this is the ONE!!!

Seven has been training her entire life to kill Pures, and knows almost nothing else about the world outside her home, a secret government facility. That is until she, and several others are taken outside to a clearing filled with Pures and humans alike, and her life is turned upside.

After taking a bullet meant for Daphne on Greenrock, Jack is forced to come to terms with the truth about his life, and Blare’s, while under the watchful eye of Agent Baxter.

Taiga is the second book in the Renegade Strangers series. I loved reading Greenrock earlier this year, and was so excited to be given the opportunity to read Taiga as an ARC. This book blew me away! Definitely a 5 star read!

*Please check the trigger warnings, as there are mentions of confronting topics.

Taiga - Renegade Strangers book 2 by Layla Pine

-Paranormal Romance with Shifters & Drinkers
-Fated Mates, Resisting Fate
-Government Experiments, Escape & Revenge
-Inner Beast Banter
-Dark Twists & Turns
-‘Who did this to you?’ & Only One Mattress
-Dark Romance & lots of spice 🥵

OMG!!! Can I give it infinite stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was hooked from the very start and sitting at the edge of my seat with every twist and turn.
So many emotions were felt during this book and I found it so very hard to put down, I absolutely cannot wait for book 3!!!
Loved the recap to Greenrock at the start, which was done beautifully with a recap from different characters.
I love how Layla can draw you into each and every character and you just couldn’t wait to see where their journeys lead.
Layla Pine you are a truly talented and gifted author!!!

I’d like to say a huge thank you to Layla for having me as an ARC reader for Taiga. What an incredibly amazing book to have as my first ARC read 🥰

I was lucky enough to be given an advanced reader copy of this book!
Thank goodness because after only just recently finding and finishing the first book in this series Greenrock… I needed more… I needed to know what happened next… and I have to say Taiga is even better than Greenrock which is mind blowing because the first book is so good!!!!
It’s ending, definitely has me as a reader craving More, MOre, MORe, MORE!!!!!
And now I have to wait for the next book 😭
Although with the quality of writing and story line I know it will be worth the wait!

So some great things about Taiga without spoiling the story…
Layla Pine (author) is upfront with a content warning at the beginning of the book so you can prepare yourself for any themes that may be triggering (this is a dark, very spicy, thriller, paranormal romance after all).

Layla has also put in something that I wish every author who wrote series books had at the beginning of their next instalment is a where we left them!!! Basically giving a brief recap on where each of the characters in the book left off!!!!
So helpful and considerate especially when you have to wait for the next book!!!
I really hope she continues to do this for all the book in the series and I hope other series authors start to do this more as well!

The characters that we have gotten to know in Greenrock continue to grow and I really appreciate the work into their character development…. I enjoyed the additional characters as well!

So if you like your books with Shifters and Spice and can mentally prepare yourself for some very confronting, traumatic and dark themes (which I need to add are not included for shock value but add to the complexity of this very intriguing series).

Then READ this book but please read Greenrock first!

Excuse me while I talk about just how amazing this book is.
First off this was my first ever ARC and what an honour it's been.
This was also the biggest book I've read but I'm also new to reading this year.

Although it's the biggest book I've read, not once was I bored. I loved every minute of it. It was so easy to read.

I couldn't put this book down.

Layla writes in a way that captivates you and has you feeling like you are right there. The whole time I saw it like it was a movie and I thought "my gosh this needs to be a movie, everyone needs to see this and what an amazing movie it would make."

Not only that but everyone needs to read this book, this series in fact. I'm already dying to read the next one, hoping there is a next one.

I love the characters so much that I connected to them. I'm already missing them.
I laughed, I smiled, I was kept on edge, I was cheering on the characters, I even almost cried.

This book has a few triggers, but even they are done in a way that it makes the story, I will say that normally I'd struggle to read these paticular triggers, but I was ok.

Taiga is phenomenal. It's so well written. It has a fantastic storyline, which I'm big on. It has you feeling all the emotions, it leaves you needing more. It's a 5 out of 5 for me but if I could give it more stars I would.

Taiga has started my love for fantasy.

Greenrock and Taiga are must reads

“Run fast, because when I catch you, I’ll hold you down and do all the things I’ve ever fantasized about … until you’re begging me for mercy.”

Taiga is the second book in the Renegade Strangers series and it picks up running from where Greenrock left off.

This story mainly follows Jack and Seven. Jack is reeling from the aftermath at Greenrock and dealing with the new reality of what he is. Seven, a hybrid shifter, has spent her whole life inside Taiga, been told to hate the Pures and taught how to fight them. She knows nothing of what the outside world is like and spends her days subjected to experiments.

When Jack is brought inside Taiga, his chance meeting with Seven stirs something inside him. He can’t get the word MINE out of his head.

When there is an opportunity to escape Taiga, Jack and Seven flee together and find respite in a cabin in the woods. When they realise they are meant to be joined they both try to fight the urges.

Their bodies urge to join is insistent but Jack and Seven need to focus their energies on rescuing the other hybrids in the compound.

This story was a page turner and took me on such a roller coaster ride. It’s definitely one where you need to check your trigger warnings. I loved Jack and Seven’s relationship, the slow burn, the banter and the spice! This story ends with a promise of another exciting, spicy paranormal fantasy read and I’m ready for it!

Book Two in the Renegade Strangers series starts right where book ne left off - but with new POV's!

Seven and Jack take us on a wild emotional ride - this fast paced well crafted story takes us through twists and turns so fast you'll get whiplash!

Building so perfectly on the world we were introduced to in Greenrock, Layla added a bit of this and a bit of that and OPPS ALL our faves:

Multi POV (first person an third - loved this!)
Vampires
Secret Identity
Found Family
Secret Society
Shifters
Fated mates

And a new spin on him saying"who did this to you" - she days - I WILL FIND YOU. Swoon, dead. Oh, and she is older than him. HOT.

Its got some dark themes too so be sure to check the triggers, there are some medical experiments, institutionalisation, SA, violence, forced mating.

LOVED this one. Need to clear my schedule for book three because they are CHUNKY and deserve to be enjoyed in full!

I’m lost for words. What did I just read, this book was fantastic. 2nd book in the renegade strangers series. I was so happy Jack got his own book.

Loved that Jack found Seven and the tension between these two on fire. So many emotions throughout this book, heartache, love, anger, hatred, my legs crossed 🥵.

The trauma in this book is heart wrenching so please check your trigger warnings.

This book is huge but you are so invested in the book that you don’t even notice. You just want to know what happens next.

The ending with Roman broke my heart and Ellis that was a cliffhanger. I love Ellis she is funny, strong, straight forward. So looking forward to reading more about her.

Layla pine is a fantastic writer and whatever book she writes will be an automatic purchase for me. Thank you for taking me on a fantastic journey 🩷🩷🩷🩷

Holy heck, what a wild ride this book was.

Firstly - Seven is one hell of a strong woman to have not let the events of her past (and present for part of the book) break her. The atrocities committed against all of the Shifters in the Taiga facility are just unforgivable.

I'll admit Jack wasn't my favourite character in the first book but I grew to love him in this one. It was also refreshing for it not to be instant love despite being pushed together.

When I got towards the last third of the book I couldn't put it down! There were things I just needed to know and I needed to know it now! And that ending?! Gosh I need book three now, I don't know how I'm going to go about waiting! I love that Ellis is going to get more of a main part in the next book. I also loved in this book that whilst the focus was on Jack and Seven, we still got to find out what was happening with everyone else.

Layla Pine is an absolute mastermind! This book is infinity stars for me. There is no rating high enough for me.

It has everything in and more, and has been written in such a way that, even though there’s a lot going on, it all flows perfectly and is still easy to keep up with.

Taiga follows the intense journey between Jack and Seven which had my whole attention right from the very start. It also heavily includes characters from Greenrock, which I absolutely love, without taking the main focus from Seven and Jack. Layla’s ability to include characters from previous books in her series is phenomenal.

You do definitely need to read Greenrock first to understand it. There is a recap at the beginning of Taiga, which I might add is done so well - it is done from different characters perspectives, but there is too much storyline to follow properly without having first read Greenrock.

An absolutely incredible read and journey and I’m grateful to have had the chance to ARC read this.

(Book 2 in the Renegade Strangers series)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌶🌶🌶

Holey hot mother of dayem.....

I want to note that I am still new to smut, romance and fantasy so my opinion is very new but after reading this I have extremely high expectation of my next choice.

Greenrock was amazing (the first in the series). It opened so many doors and was so much fun but this one was another layer again.

Jack and Seven want to fight, not just the ones that did them wrong but the pull they have for each other. Jack hates his inner beast and wishing to be done with it and Seven wants to let hers loose in the facility to kill them all.

Neither wants the pull between them, to feed the monsters, to join but can they really resist it all especially in the light of the full moon?

After the cliffhanger at the end of Greenrock, I launched straight into Taiga, I HAD to know what happened next.

What a rollercoaster I was taken on. I didnt love Jack in the first book, he was kind of mopey and petulant. Turns out he was just misunderstood. I love him so much now!

I loved where this story took me, there was action and adventure as well as a fresh take on the fated mates trope that so compelling to read!!

I was on the edge of my seat and torn as I got closer to the end, part of me needed to see where the book went in its conclusion, and the other part of me didnt want it to end!!

Layla Pine is incredible and I cannot wait for the next instalment in the series!

I bloody loved this book. The plot, the characters, the spice!!! Layla, you are a genius. I loved the will they/won't they between Seven and Jack, and the character evolution of both. I could really visualise the locations, and it felt like I was there. Some things were truly devastating and broke my heart. I love the build-up to book three and feel like I am on a rollercoaster, and it's just peeking over the top about to free fall with enthusiasm to the finish. This is definitely a novel for mature audiences, and please check the trigger warnings as there are confronting themes.

Taiga is book 2 of a series that has absolutely left me mind blown and absolutely floored at the descriptiveness, world building and the characters who
have gripped my heart.

Storytelling is a craft and Layla yields a mighty pen! Each book I read of Laylas I'm not sure how she can out do herself, yet, she always does.

Following from Greenrock, Book 1, we pick up right where we left off. And straight into the action. I only put this book down to parent ajd finished it within 24 hours of starting. It's a thicc boi but does not feel it!

Wow. Just, wow.
I usually wait to do reviews, to reflect on what I've just read. But this book just has me buzzing.

I am not good at writing reviews that can do books justice, so just take my reaction as the review. I started reading this while working on my own projects, but they quickly got put aside as I just put Taiga at the forefront of everything. Every chapter had me eager for the next, every character had me invested.

I'm already discussing theories with a friend for the next book. Can't wait til I can get my hands on that one.

This is deserving of 5 stars 10 times over.

Layla Pine has given me the wow factor again after reading her 1st book Greenrock which pulled me in to this new genre i have then had the pleasure of arc reading Taiga. The 1st book pulled me in well her 2nd book had me hooked. If you want spice that is descriptive, hot, and makes you blush a Lyla Pine book is for you, you really can’t put this book down. Along with a storyline that has you fighting for her characters every page draws you in. I am so looking forward to book 3 it is going to be one hell of a ride.
