Mad Broke Cold: An Unpredictable Psychological Thriller

Rate this book
The Silent Patient meets You: Mad Broke Cold is a fast-paced psychological thriller full of shocking twists.

Every person on Ice Island has an agenda—some understandable, some convoluted, some downright sadistic. Evelyn Hawthorn is a case in point. I’ll tell you about them all later… if we make it that long.

Ice Island is home to violent psychopaths too dangerous to be housed in a normal penitentiary. They are experts at murder. They are adept at finding ways around the system—and the people who run it. Most of them have managed to slip out of high-security prisons.

Luckily for the public, Ice Island is inescapable. Unfortunately for the doctors working today, a brutal winter storm just barreled into the island. They have no power, no phones. They’re running low on supplies. There will be no assistance from the mainland—boats are no match for the icy waves.

But the patients on this island don’t want to be rescued. They’re hunting. And the only prey they’re interested in are the doctors who have kept them locked up all these years.

The patients on Ice Island want blood.

Enter case #281762: Evelyn Hawthorn. The woman is a genius, driven, but brutally dangerous to every single person on the island. Especially herself.

Evelyn is seeing and hearing things that aren’t really there. She can’t remember the crimes that led to her being locked up. And she’s the one who cut the power, trapping all of them inside the asylum.

Without the most dangerous woman in the compound and the information she has locked inside her brain, not a single person will escape Ice Island alive—without Evelyn, a woman who couldn’t remember her own name until four hours ago.

If you love unreliable narrators, locked-door thrillers, whodunnits with surprising endings, and well-developed characters that bleed straight onto the page, dive into Mad Broke Cold today! An intense and addictive read for fans of Gillian Flynn, Freida McFadden, and Lucinda Berry.

This book was a beyond wild ride that twisted at every possible turn. While the narrator wasn’t exactly unreliable our main character was certainly unreliable since she had no memories for most of the book. The setting for this one was super creepy. Imagine being on an island in a psychiatric prison with no power and no way to escape in the middle of the storm. I like that the narrator was mysterious and watching everything happen from a distance. It made the book feel a bit more unique. Evelyn wakes up with no memory and her wrists are slit and her head aches. She realizes quickly that she has no memory and doesn’t feel like she belongs in the facility she wakes up in. I will admit that I don’’t love unreliable narrator stories, but this one took a new angle and I did enjoy it. As she slowly started to regain her memories the true story of what happened and was happening emerged. I was able to call most of the twists and turns, but there were a couple I didn’t see coming. Overall I gave this one 4.5 stars rounded up because I enjoyed it. Perfect for spooky season.

This was so good. A book that kept me guessing, right along with the main character. She unraveled the mystery bit by bit, but some of it was lies, and time was not on her side. I stayed up too late reading this because there was NOT a point anywhere in that second half, where I could just walk away. There was too much going on! What a wild ride til the end.

This book serves up the three D’s

Devious, dark and delightful.

Mad Broke Cold is an instant classic. This story toys with both your emotions and senses from cover to cover. Once again, O’Flynn will have your mind twisted up in ways that would make Christian Grey jealous. But if you feel the tale gets to intense, you can always use the safe word. Just kidding, there’s no safe word. Enjoy the thrill ride now and work it out with your therapist later.
Just a helpful tip before reading, make sure you stock up on blankets because this book will send serious shivers down your spine.

Releasing Oct 8th!

Okay, picture this. Let's start with the fact that we are on an island, in the middle of a bad storm, trapped and locked in a hospital for very dangerous psychopaths. We are on what they call, Ice Island.

The MC, Evelyn Hawthorn, is mentally unstable, unable to recollect her alleged crimes and experiencing hallucinations.
The patients in this hospital decide to hunt the doctors who have kept them locked up.

Meghan really knows how to ramp up the suspense in her books. I was on edge the whole time, trying to figure out what's happening. Additionally, the identity of the enigmatic narrator intrigued me.

Overall, great read! The ending totally blindsided me, in a good way of course!!

Publication Day for Meghan O'Flynn! Her superb thriller came out today!

The description of the book starts out brilliantly: Ice Island is home to violent psychopaths too dangerous to be housed in a normal penitentiary. They are experts at murder. They are adept at finding ways around the system—and the people who run it.

I won't tell you more as I don't want to give away too much, to spoil it. The reason - you need to read it yourselves! I had read the information about the book and let me tell you, it doesn't do justice to the book. It's so much more gripping, so much more thrilling, playing tricks with your mind, questioning whether you know where the story is going. I was left guessing for most of the book as to what was going on. It left me confused, wondering where it would lead. The utter suspense, the uncertainty - it all contributed to an epic read. I've never read anything like this before, and now the author has spoilt me, I'm afraid most thrillers will be just average.

It's a brilliantly written story with an amazing protagonist, and the author is extremely well equipped in translating the sheer desperation, internal struggle and dialogue in combination with utter fear onto paper. It's a beautiful cascade of words flowing from the pages, taking you on a stormy voyage into unknown territory culminating in an absolutely mind-blowing twist.

MUST READ! 5/5⭐️

Where to start? With the fact that I've just read one of the books that played the most with my mind, or that I'm still shaken up by it?

Meghan O'Flynn has succeeded in creating a universe that's totally twisted, crazy, unexpected and absolutely delightful for any thriller fan. Unreliable characters, a narrator who gives us a unique view of the situation, twists and turns, and the truth revealed slowly but surely...or is it just an illusion? It's up to you to find out! But be warned, you may lose sleep over it, and perhaps a little of your sanity. Enjoy!

What a seriously twisted story! I didn’t know what was real, hallucination, truth, or fabrication. It was a bit terrifying to see all that happened to Evelyn and not know any of the history. I felt that it was as if I was in the same situation as Evelyn was. I was as confused and terrified as she was. I loved reading this! Especially the end when everything was explained. I do worry about her future. Highly recommend!

If you've read any of Meghan O'Flynn's previous works, you know to expect shocking twists. Mad, Broke, Cold takes it to a whole new level. I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but let's just say the characters can't trust their own minds and you may or may not want to trust the narrator. The author uses her professional knowledge to paint a gripping portrait of mental illness, trauma, and gaslighting. Grab a copy today and enjoy this wild ride.

What a crazy ride! (Pun intended!) A super creepy atmosphere, what could be creepier than a psychiatric hospital for the most dangerous of patients, on a deserted island during a major snowstorm! It was a dark twisty tale that kept me guessing until the end! I definitely had a few “Wait! What?!” moments! When the bodies start to pile up and the level of suspense rises there’s no stopping until you get to the very end!

Insane is an understatement!

This insane story is a cat and mouse, kill or be killed thriller, in which Drs and patients are trapped in an insane asylum in a storm with no power and no way out. No one knows who's an enemy or who's an ally. Half the battle is figuring out who's a friend and who's a foe. The other half-making it out alive. The end will leave you asking WTAF??? The author outdid herself once again! Highly recommend.

This excellent storyline has drama, danger, psychological twists, suspense, good secondary characters, and great world-building. The main characters are defined, intelligent, and suspicious. This thriller is entertaining, engaging, and enjoyable. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
