The disability of the title defines the premise of the main relationship, because Prince Jing’s inability to speak isolates him from his family but also allows Li Yu to communicate with his master in non-verbal ways. This second volume of “The Disabled Tyrant’s Beloved Pet Fish” by Xue Shan Fei Hu continues in the same light-hearted manner as the first book with perhaps a tinge of melancholy. The tyrant of the title was part of the original novel into which Li Yu transmigrated, but since the fish-scamming system is forcing him to play the game of love, there is hope that their love can prevent him from turning tyrannical.

Prince Jing is now decidedly in love with Li Yu and has realized the connection between his fish and his lover, but developing a romantic relationship is difficult at the best of times and so there is plenty of confusion along the way. Although both are fairly young, Li Yu is the youngest and so Prince Jing moves a little too fast in the romance department, irritating his intended mate for quite a while. Fortunately, they work out their disagreement and eventually move forward.

This danmei is unusual in a couple of different ways: Firstly, it is cute and light unlike the more angst-ridden stories that often dominate the genre. This is a pleasant palate-cleanser, but it does also mean that the emotional investment is a little on the lighter side; this is cute superficiality more than deep emotions, which is actually a nice change for the genre. Secondly, there seems to be little to no homophobia in the court setting; Wang Xi, the prince’s main eunuch, sees his master’s relationship for what it is and simply goes with the flow. The eunuch is clearly supportive of the relationship and is helpful with words but also facilitates Li Yu’s fish/human transformations by leaving at opportune times so he can transform without anyone around.

Prince Jing calls his fish a consort and his clearly planning to marry him. This plot point is mentioned without any drama or pushback from his surroundings, which makes for an unusually accepting atmosphere for a book set in ancient China and would quite frankly be remarkable many places in the modern world even today. The point is not belabored; it is simply accepted.

The highlight of this series is most definitely the sweetness of the interaction between Prince Jing and his fish. The prince has a tacit understanding of what his partner needs and finds joy in trying to provide him with these things, the most important of which is the freedom to decide the pace of their relationship. After their spat, Li Yu had stated some rules of engagement and Prince Jing confirms his agreement by paraphrasing the rules into poetry,

“Your decision to stay the night,
Leave whenever you delight,
With you I will never fight,
I’ll love only you in this life.”
(p. 272, ch. 64)

This code of conduct rhymes but its true value lies in the pure sentiment hidden behind the poetry. Prince Jing has learned that he must put the needs of his partner first and that true love means giving the other the freedom to leave. That is the paradox of love that Prince Jing manages to summarize in these short lines and even though they are stated in a slightly ridiculous story about a man who falls in love with a fish, they still ring true.

My feelings from vol 1 haven't changed, I still like how cute and funny this is. I can't say it's equally memorable as some other danmei I've read because it's not. The plot is much simpler and there aren't that many charachters, however that also mean that I don't need to constantly worry about the survival of my babies 🥹🥹

I didn't expect to love Li Yu and Mu Tianchi together so much. They are such an adorable couple and I'd say they have the healthiest relationship in all danmei I've read. Also, they actually know how to properly comunicate despite one of them being mute and the other fish most of the time 🤣🤣 seriously, get yourself someone who will treat you, as Prince Jing treats his fish ❤️

As he kissed him, he realized Prince Jing was much taller than him. Usually, when he kissed Prince Jing, he had to tilt his head up, which was slightly uncomfortable. Now that he was on the desk, they were eye to eye. As a result, kissing was also a lot easier.
Prince Jing wanted him to relax...
Li Yu suddenly realized that althought Prince Jing couldn't speak, and he constantly had to guess what his intentions were - sometimes even guessing wrong - the way Prince Jing doted on him never changed. Li Yu felt both moved and warm.

Fanart by hootyhoowoo

There were many great scences of these two. Especially now that they become boyfriends. Yes, boyfriends, lol because Li Yu is determined to teach Tianchi modern terms, so they are dating now. (It's really funny how everyone is confused about what 'boyfriend' means, and then they are like 'oh, it's a foreign word for consort' 🙂‍↕️) And it was beyond cute when Prince Jing brought Li Yu's cooking for a meal to work 🥰 and eating it despite tasting awfull, haha.

They are also progressing on physical level. I didn't expect many steamy scences because Li Yu was so shy in vol 1 but I guess that was before Tianchi kissed him for the first time ❤️

Gif by guzhufuren

Li Yu knew what Prince Jing wanted to do. If he wanted to, he could avoid it.
But he didn't. In that moment, he realized with a start that he was hoping he would kiss him.
When those lips finally landed on his, Li Yu felt like his heart sighed. [...] it felt like there was a little boat floating around in his heart. That was the feeling of love, right?

Gif by guzhufuren

That was probably their longest kiss. Li Yu did regret it halway throught. After all, he's only just accepted that he liked Prince Jing, but they weren't officially together yet. They couldn't just kiss until the world ended at any tiny spark of hope.

Yess, you absolutely can kiss 'till the world ends 🥰🥰 Li Yu has so much to learn yet. For instance, what to do when your boyfriend thinks you are a koi yao who needs to absorb spiritual essence - basically meaning you need to fuck to survive because that's what all the books say 😂😂😂

Prince Jing thought silently. You aren't a fierce beast, but you are a seductive little yao, which is much more dangerous. But he couldn't just stay there when the seductive little yao had asked so many times. After hesitating for a while, he sat down next to Xiaoyu. There was only a finger's width between them.
Li Yu was just waiting for him to get close enough, and he immediately wrapped his arms around Prince Jing and pulled him in. Now there was no more space between them.

Fanart by vanaisyillustrations

They really are so cute and funny together 😍 can't wait to see what will happen in the next vol. Things are getting a little bit complicated political wise and despite being pretty sure Prince Jing will become emperor at the end, I'm still curious how will it come to this.

Li Yu sniffled, "Your Highness, I-I'm already with your child, you're still going to leave me here alone?"
[...]
If this was any other accasion, he'd just laugh - how could men get pregnant? But the problem was that Prince Jing knew Xiaoyu was not human. He was a carp spirit. Perhaps carp spirits were jsut different, and male fish could get pregnant?
Prince Jing wanted to believe Li Yu. If Xiaoyu said he was, then he was. But Xiaoyu was a fish. He was human. So, was he pregnant with a wish or human?
A human would be easier... If it were fish...
Prince Jing placed his palm carfully on Li Yu's belly. No matter what, that was his child in there, he wouldn't deny it!

And I especially want to know how this will happen. I've known since before I started this book that it has mpreg but I don't know other logistics 😆 also, so sweet of Tianchi that he's totally committed to raise a bunch of fish babies 😊 what a husband material ❤️

Li Yu is so freaking stupid💀😭 This series is thoroughly entertaining me. “Ye-shizi was impressed but also thought Prince Jing was a bit crazy.” Same Ye-shizi, same🤣 I can’t wait for the third volume!

My reaction towards Li Yu the whole time:

I'll start with the cons 1st to get them out of my system (no pun intended).

Cons:

I didn't think this was as good as vol 1 and the pacing felt really slow at times.

I think it's because there's less humour in vol 2 and we don't get as many interactions with the system. And I enjoy this series primarily for the humour.

Pros:

However, I still really enjoyed reading about Li Yu (MC) and Prince Jing (ML) and binged read it. We finally get a kiss in this one and I couldn't have been more pleased.

There's no m- preg yet...

I still really like the characters but can't decide whether to carry on as the m-preg is going to start in vol 3. Definitely agree that the series should be shorter than 4 volumes.

It's still a cute, fluffy and slice of life story though which I don't regret reading.

I liked this but I didn't LOVE it. It was very fun and ridiculous like the first, but I think the author tried to add in some angst where it didn't necessarily fit. I also think things just happened VERY fast - like a problem would be introduced and within 10-20 pages it would be figured out.

I also think this was the first danmei i've read where it's VERY obvious it was serialized and that the author was writing it as she went along and was writing it based on fan's reactions. Because Li Yu literally goes back on his own thoughts like three times in this volume and it just felt very messy and unclear WHY he thought one way and then completely changed his thinking 2 pages later yk?

Also I've heard all the rumors about this danmei being mpreg but... from where we are at the end of this volume i'm so confused as to how this is going to happen LOL

also is this really going to be 4 volumes?? i thought it was going to be 3 but now I see 4 listed and I'm like bro how the HELL are we going to stretch this into 2 more books???

This was a lighthearted and funny continuation of the first volume. It didn’t grip me as much as the first volume did. Maybe it was the sense of humour which was still there but the scenes weren’t as hilarious as in the previous book. I also found it a bit weird how fast Li Yu’s feelings developed when he didn’t have them for a long time. Maybe he just wasn’t aware of them but their relationship still progressed so fast. I’m still looking forward to reading more of this story but I’m not left with this feeling of “OMG, I need to know what is going to happen.” It was a pretty solid read (but not an extraordinary one for me).

This series brings me immense joy.

Some memorable quotes —

"Concubine Qiu forced herself to get closer, wrenching her trembling lips into a painstaking smile. She wanted to say something to praise the fish — but she had cussed this fish out ten thousand times in private, so when she was suddenly faced with the need to praise him, she froze up!"

"...It was a joke? Prince Jing smiled helplessly. If he didn't let the fish come with him, he'd pretend to be pregnant? He really didn't know what to do with this fish."

First of all, it is 4.75 for me, okay? I loved it so much. I'm not going to lie, I still can't believe 7Seas decided to translate this novel. It is /normal/ danmei novel - but it is such a wild (bizarre) book to officially translate into english. And like print it and sell it worldwide - no secret printing in someone's office work and sell it on cons or something ahahaha
The illustrations? EXQUISITE.

The second volume is just wild as the first one. Li Yu is trying his best to keep up with his double life, Prince Jing is also trying his best to keep up with Li Yu's double life.

Li Yu search history:
* hair tutorial
* antique
* fake antique
* how to date
* can fish speak

Prince Jing would like to post on reddit:
"My spouse is doing his best to make my life better, but all I want to do is to pamper him. How can I tell him without hurting his feelings?"

I honestly have no idea why I'm getting as attached to this story as I am. I've been having a bit of a depressed period lately, not quite sure exactly how to describe it, and this ended up really helping.

This may be a bit of an odd pardon, the pun fish for most people. However, if that doesn't weird you put I can't recommend this book enough.

This continues to be such a delight. It was perhaps not as hilarious as book one. Some angst crept in halfway through, which though necessary for the development of the central relationship, I felt could have been handled a little smoother. But even with that, there was still so much humor, and so many adorable moments.

These two are such a great couple. They are equally protective and supportive of the other. Li Yu may be a bit clueless at times, but he's also very clever. Seeing him find ways to take care of and defend Prince Jing even while in fish form is precious. There are plenty of scenes of Li Yu as a human in here though, as the relationship progresses in both feelings and actions.

The way this volume left off has me even more excited for volume three.

Volume 2 of The Disabled Tyrant’s Beloved Pet Fish is even cuter than the first. Prince Jing is such a simp while Li Yu believes he’s only helping the prince in order to fulfil the tasks of the computer program, aka ‘the fish scamming system’, in charge of his transmigration journey back to human.

The volume starts where the previous one ended, with Prince Jing realising that Li Yu, the young man who mysteriously appears and disappears in his quarters, is in fact his beloved pet fish Xiaoyu. But instead of being shocked, he concludes Li Yu must be a yao, an animal spirit that can take a human form, on a personal trial. And since Li Yu doesn’t reveal his true identity, he concludes the spirit wants to keep it a secret, so he won’t bring up that he knows the young man and the fish are the same. It causes many silly moments as Li Yu struggles to hide before he transforms back to a fish, believing his identity is still a secret.

Li Yu has no idea he’s supposed to be a yao. He has his hands full with increasingly bizarre demands of the fish scamming system, like indulging with the prince. His rewards include a transformation into a proper koi fish, much to the astonishment of everyone, and learning Prince Jing’s secrets that raise more questions than they solve. But he’s still limited to only two hours as a human every day.

Prince Jing has his own ideas of what it means that the fish is a yao: he must share essence with the young man in order for him to grow. And that means intimate contact. But when he tries to kiss Li Yu, everything goes sideways. Li Yu has no idea what’s come over the prince and finds the whole incident frightening. It leads to maybe the best scenes in the book where the prince tries to make up to the fish who keeps moping. But Li Yu figures out his own feelings in the end and making out with the prince doesn’t sound so bad after all. If only he could stay as a human longer for them to take matters further.

There isn’t as much court intrigue as in the first book, but the other princes fighting to become the crown prince still cause Prince Jing constant trouble. Prince Jing deals with them with the help of his fish. And he’s starting to think that he should try for the crown himself too. But even though he manages to please his father the emperor, there’s no reward. Instead, there’s a great change for Jing and his fish. The book ends there.

This was such a bowl of cotton candy, silly and cute, with occasional darker moments to balance things out. Prince Jing’s amusement with his lover trying to hide his fishness, and secretly helping him, and Li Yu’s obliviousness is fun to follow. There are many silly moments when Li Yu earnestly tries to please the prince, only to make a mess. They are so much fun together. It seems Li Yu will be successful in his overall mission of preventing Prince Jing from becoming a tyrant, but there’s still a lot to come. We’ll see how things go in the next book.

Very funny, silly read. Somehow both more and less ridiculous than vol.1
Less, because there was almost nothing left on the poor prince to accidentally kiss or bite, so they've moved on to doing it on purpose, good for them. There were two dubconny moments that made me uncomfortable (I've read 2ha, I'm not sensitive, it's just that those scenes exist in context and they stood out here to me). One of them almost got a healthy discussion, but then didn't, alas. Anyway, it's not criminal, by danmei standards at least.
Fresh ridiculousness came with identity porn, and it's delightful.

It took me a few days to get through this, because honestly for me, the palace politics aren’t particularly gripping especially that Prince Jing has his golden finger, but anyway, I'm still happy to be here! And the sweet, funny moments made it more than worth it.

This volume is all about their silly, soft, and slow relationship unfolding under the tension of secrecy and palace life. I particularly love when Li Yu desperately tries to keep his fish and human selves separate, even though it’s hilariously obvious. And Prince Jing sees right through it, but he indulges Li Yu’s act with quiet amusement and unwavering care. Moreover, despite his possessiveness, he’s deeply respectful, always treating Li Yu with gentle understanding and patience. They're just so boyfriends!

I believe the real charm lies in the emotional moments and sharp comedic timing. Plus, it’s so rewarding to see that emotional intimacy deepen under all the fluff and comedy.

Aaahhhh! I love the silly fish couple ❤️

Even if it's a little boring sometimes it's just sooo cute and comfy, especially after volume 7 of 2HA. I'm still recovering from that one 😭 And I like that the author added some litte mystery and backstories! Can't wait for more fishy romance ❤️❤️

OMG, I just finished The Disabled Tyrant's Beloved Pet Fish: Canji Baojun De Zhangxin Yu Chong Vol. 2, and I have so many feelings right now! This volume had me giggling, swooning, and screaming all at once. Li Yu and Prince Jing are just too adorable for words! We finally got that kiss, and I was literally melting!
But, I have to say, this one felt a bit slower than the first volume. There wasn’t as much of the hilarious banter with the system, which I really missed. And there were a few angsty moments that had me like, "Wait, where did that come from?" It didn’t totally ruin the vibe, but I kinda wished we’d stuck more to the fluffy, ridiculous fun that made me fall in love with this series in the first place.
Still, Li Yu and Prince Jing’s relationship is EVERYTHING. Seeing Li Yu find ways to protect and care for the prince, even as a fish, just made my heart burst. And when Li Yu started realizing his feelings? I was totally screaming!
I’m a little bummed that this is going to be four volumes instead of three, but you bet I’ll be picking up the next one! I’m way too invested in these two to stop now. I need to know what happens next, and I’m crossing my fingers for even more sweet, funny, and heart-melting moments in Vol. 3!

Okay, definitely didn't hit AS hard as the first one, there were a few questionable scenes (don't wanna spoil it, so just take my word for it) that just didn't sit well with me. They were unnecessary, and it wasn't resolved properly (doubt it will), so i tried to go past it and enjoy the rest, and I did to some extent, but it wasn't the same as before. I still had a lot of fun I laughed a lot, but my complete impression won't ever be the same😭. I still love the first book very much (or should I say the first quarter of this whole novel), but the second book/part could've been just so much better in my humble opinion. If we just stayed in the fluffy ridiculous style it would've been fine, but it got too problematic too fast, I'll think long and hard if I'll continue with the next parts when they get published. Stay tuned in the next months if the curiosity killed the cat for good.

This series is so fun! I wish there were more than 4 books out. I can tell I’m going to finish them quickly.

This book does have the beginning of the mpreg plot but it didn’t take itself too seriously. I love how lighthearted and sappy this series is.

Favorite quotes:

The emperor's fish approval rating increased once again.

After all this chaos, the fish was still lively and active, and he felt like he could have assailed even more monks without issue.

How had he become a consort? What was going to become of his reputation?
Well, never mind, a fish didn't need a reputation.

The fish finally calmed down, and Prince Jing, unaware that increasingly cursed bentos were waiting for him in the future, sighed in relief.

Favorite character: Prince Jing. He loves spoiling Li Yu as both a fish and a human, and he’s so sweet with him despite their miscommunications. Honestly, the miscommunication trope has never been more apt.

I laughed and cried at this book! Although I was a bit frustrated by the misunderstandings and a bit irked when Prince Jing kinda forced himself on Li Yu. There were frustrating moments for sure! Both Li Yu and Prince Jing frustrated me so much I wanted to pinch their cheeks! But these misunderstandings were understandable and explained properly throughout the book. But yeah, so many impactful things have happened so far. I felt touch with how much Li Yu and Prince Jing love each other! I just want them to succeed in everything they set out to do!

Towards the 80-90% part of the book, things began picking up and it got me so hyped for the next book! I am very much looking forward to reading the 3rd volume! 10/10 read for me!

Did I actually like this? Eh. It was more that it had some cute and fun points and towards the end it was swinging back around to some court politics shenanigans which is why I MIGHT read the next one, but don't hold your breath.

The author decided they just HAD to include a certain scene which completely ruined my enjoyment of the couple/romance. There was 0 need if what they wanted to do was introduce some drama/angst to the relationship, there were a myriad other ways to do it.

as someone else said, li yu may not be the smartest character but he is definitely the smartest fish

this particular volume doesn’t have as much action as vol 1 had and instead focuses moreso on the relationship between li yu and mu tianchi. i was personally more than okay with that, and i found it really heartwarming to see their relationship progress to this point. i’m also surprised at how quickly they got together tbh—no slow burns at all.

taking some time to give recognition to the side characters!!! ye qinghuan is as silly as ever, with the added addition of the unnamed princess of jinjue!!! they are the #2 pet owners of all time, second only to prince jing of course. they were genuinely my favorite characters after chiyu and they made me so happy anytime they appeared.

also showing a bit of my bias here, but this volume has my absolute favorite cover of all 4 volumes and is honestly what drew me into the series to begin with. the art is not only beautiful as always, but the vibrant colors depicting the street market just tie in so well together and make it so aesthetically pleasing!! the spine of the book in particular is GORGEOUS and contrasts well with the generally darker palettes that the other volume cover arts have.

overall a very enjoyable read, and i cant wait to see li yu and mu tianchi develop as they go through thick and thin together! 5⭐️ for sure

Keeping up the chaotic energy, and I love that. This series is unhinged.

Spoilers ahead!

Notes:
- Of course Prince Jing takes his fish on a secret spy mission.
- STOPPPPP Prince Jing ordering an entire pond-filled courtyard be made for his fish, then getting upset when he thinks about Xiao Yu leaving him, and then getting so happy when he realizes Xiao Yu still wants to live in Prince Jing's room <3<3<3<3<3
- STOPPPPP PRINCE JING BEING AWAKE WHEN LI YU GOES TO NUZZLE HIM. AND BEING DISAPPOINTED THIS DEMON IS CONSUMING HIS ESSENCE PROPERLY BAHAHAHAHAHA
- I absolutely can't get over Ye-shizi's one-sided competition with Prince Jing. He and his dog are just too funny, but Prince Jing's smugness and his seemingly perfect fish pet are utterly hilarious.
- There's literally too much going on and I love it all. The Emperor, seeing the fish turning gold, declares that this must be an auspicious sign, so the 3rd prince goes to persuade Prince Jing to sell it. But Prince Jing's look could have killed hahaha, he is NOT selling his precious fish. And then later Prince Jing acting petty and upset because Li Yu was genuinely impressed at the sight of all the silver and gold offered. BUT THEN adding silver and gold into Li Yu's fish tank HAHAHAHA. And Li Yu genuinely loved it hahahaha.
- The new mission: "The Tyrant Raises Fish to Revitalize Bloodline".... hello??? Does this mean what I think it means?? *mind flashes back to the inauspicious mpreg tag*
- Eeeeee hehehe, Li Yu planning to wreak some damned havoc if Prince Jing decides to try cultivating or becoming a monk, consequently leaving the palace (and probably Li Yu) behind.
- BAHAHAHAHA prince jing bUYING LI YU'S GIFT TO WANG XI TO HAVE IT HIMSELF. What a possessive guy hahahah.
- Prince Jing purposely putting himself in danger just to force Li Yu to transform and rescue him HAHAHAHAHA
- I know it's probably supposed to be really painful that Li Yu is avoiding Prince Jing and being all upset and everything, but I absolutely love it hahaha. Playing hard to get or, like in Li Yu's case, being justifiably angry and avoidant, is my bread and butter. Don't make it easy for the love interest!! Haha! Make them fight for your love!
- One comment says it best: Whether it be pets or flirting, Ye-shizi lost again. Hahahaha! This dude is hopeless. It was already so funny with him getting hopelessly jealous over Prince Jing sneakily kissing Li Yu at the table; then he's even more wretched when he realizes Li Yu's name has the word "fish" in it.
- Ohp. Li Yu realized his crush, got smooched a few times, and now he too is DTF. Hahah.
- Li Yu: "Hey! Come sit next to me in bed!" Prince Jing: Oh, my god. This is how it happens? Right here? Right now? It's daytime... Okay. Yes. No complaints. Let's do it.
- This is all too damn cute. Like Li Yu happily admiring his boyfriend at work and then blowing him a little underwater bubble smooch.
- Just... the entire scene of Prince Jing's first day at work: bringing his boyfriend (fish), confusing his supervisor with his fish (boyfriend), Li Yu simping over Prince Jing, Prince Jing happily pulling out the worst-looking food made by Li Yu, the supervisor feeling so awkward and baffled by Prince Jing's fish-obsession and worrying about the prince's aptitude only to be shocked by his competence amidst the weird fish stuff, Prince Jing having ready-made cards with the names of the "dishes" he's eating to show off that they were made by his boyfriend, learning that Li Yu has taught Prince Jing the term "boyfriend" in the first place, the "demonic love bento" and the threat and its resurgence as Li Yu's confidence grows while watching Prince Jing eat his food so quickly...
- There's a lot of annoyed/angry/fed-up comments about Li Yu not revealing his identity, or acting too stupid, or questioning how or why on earth Li Yu can't tell that Prince Jing already knows. Meanwhile, I'm just enjoying the silly-ness. You really can't question th IQ of characters in a story like this, and you're simply gonna have to suspend a good amount of disbelief. Like, come on, it's funny! Think of dumb but hilarious secret identity movies like Mrs. Doubtfire or She's the Man or, like, Mulan. I dunno, just any funny movie where the main character does some real ridiculous shit, but people don't catch on. BECAUSE IT'S FUNNY. I guess in this case, it's more the main character being the clueless one, which many people seem to not like, but I know that if I was trying to hide something, and someone keeps providing me with convenient opportunities to keep that secret hidden, I probably wouldn't question it either out of sheer relief.
Again, think of this as a comedy.

Second time read:
I didn't remember it taking so long for the big secret to come out! But man, I really do love this series. Volume 2 is pretty much just as fun as Volume 1. I feel the strange, unquenchable urge to proclaim this series from the rooftops. It's just so silly.

The fishy saga continues with Li Yu's brave attempts and being inconspicuous.

It backfired... he is now a fishy boyfriend 🐟 and he seems to like it (after thinking about it for a while)!

This series is just full of fluff and SO FUNNY. It's a breeze to read through!

Is it silly? Yes.
Is it ridiculous? Hell yes.
Is it worth it? Of course.

Looking forward to a fishy empress and a reformed emperor; stay tuned!
