Lightning #1

Tú, yo y la Super Bowl

Rate this book
This hard-bodied football star is used to scoring. But he needs all the right moves to get past a fiery redhead’s defenses in a steamy standalone novel from the bestselling author of Ruined.

Emerson: Talk about bad first impressions. I have too much riding on this job to show up late on my first day looking like the winner of a wet T-shirt contest, all thanks to an arrogant quarterback who drives like he owns the road. Hunter Browning thinks that because he’s famous, he can fix everything with a smile and a wave of his hand. He’s too bronzed, buff, and beautiful for his own good. Or mine. I can’t let on that I’m a fan . . . no matter how much fun we’d have in the sack.

Hunter: Hitting that puddle was my best play since winning the Super Bowl with a touchdown pass. Sure, it’s not my preferred way to get a girl wet, but I’ll make an exception for Emerson Day. She’s got a sharp tongue and a red-hot temper, even with her soaking clothes plastered to her every curve. Now I know exactly what my next play will be: hire Emerson as my personal real-estate agent, save her job—and see if I can take her off the market.

Look for Tracy Wolff’s seductive Ethan Frost series:
RUINED | ADDICTED | EXPOSED | FLAWED

And don’t miss her standalone novel LOVEGAME:

“Tracy Wolff is at the top of my auto-buy list, and Lovegame is the perfect example why. From the very first page, Wolff sucked me in with a story that crackles with sensual energy and characters that are scarred, sexy, and wonderfully compelling.”New York Times bestselling author J. Kenner

Lovegame is a true masterpiece, with thrilling suspense, crazy hot sex, and writing so truly beautiful that it stays with you long after you put the book down.”New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett

4.5 - "I knew you'd come around..." Stars!

Tracy Wolff starts a new series, with a sexy-hot tale of a couple from opposite ends of the spectrum coming together under unusual circumstances.

I am going to be honest straight off and say that although I really enjoyed Down & Dirty, this book had the potential to be so much more, the author gave me a quick read with plenty of sexy times and good banter between the leads, but the back stories for both had so much potential for expansion that I felt a little bit let down for them that everything was so ‘insta’. There was enough meat on the bones of this book, for it to have had a lot more depth than it was given.

"Did you just take the money."

Hunter and Emerson worked well together, the rich, famous, sports-man and the poor, out-spoken, artist struggling to make ends meet by working in real estate. Their initial meeting had me laughing at my kindle, and the resulting adventures in house-hunting proved to be of the smut-alicious variety.

She’s got a mouth on her and fuck if I don’t like it…

Hunter’s back story proved that he wasn’t just an over-sexed, over-payed jock, while Emerson’s highlighted that she wasn’t just looking for a rich man to pay her way life.

"I don’t drink with me who get me wet."

This was an enjoyable albeit low substance read, the author set up things well enough that I can see more than a few books being added, with the rest of the San Diego Lightening players that were introduced in the telling of this story.

If insta is your thing, then this is possibly is for you—it's quite a speedy one.

"As the best—and best-looking—quarterback in the NFL, his prowess with the ladies is pretty much legendary."

Down and Dirty was a story with huge potential and, with a real emotional aspect and plenty of sexy time—both elements I pretty much expect from Tracy Wolff—it was by no means a difficult read. However, at the same time it felt underdeveloped and needed tightening up: aspects, and characters, were included that you thought were adding to the story but in actual fact led nowhere and were redundant.

"How do I woo a woman who doesn’t take any of my shit?"

That said, I did like Emerson and Hunter and their personalities worked well for me—together they created some serious heat and equally lovely moments that brought feeling—but overall I can't help but feel that Tracy Wolff missed the mark on giving them and their story the justice they deserved with certain aspects playing out too quickly and others simply being forgotten along the way. And that was a real shame because this had all the components to be a great story.

I loved Hunter and Emerson. Emerson didn't put up with any of his crap. He was a little shocked at their first meeting that she wasn't falling all over his famous football self. They were hot together. That garden of statues sounds like it might have been part of Elgin's marbles back in British history because they would cause a controversy. Hunter with all his cockiness and arrogance broke my heart with his love for his twin sister. It took too long for us to find out why Emerson was so afraid of water. Then the ending just felt chopped and then epilogue. I wanted there to be more.

Oh, but there are so many more hot football players on team Lightning for us to find out about. Maybe one could hook up with her friend Alice.

This is the story of . . .
Hunter, NFL quarterback and Emerson, artist at heart, real estate agent-in-training by day. After a humorous if slightly humiliating first meeting, Hunter tries to make up for his blunder by hiring Emerson as his real estate agent. He needs the perfect home for his family, the sooner the better. It doesn’t hurt that by hiring her, he has an excuse to spend time with her.

Emerson is looking to make ends meet. Desperate to keep her job Emerson goes all in to match Hunter with the home of his dreams. Knowing everything that is riding on closing this deal, Emerson tries to keep things professional but Hunter isn't some who gives up easily.

The more time they spend together, the more they reveal about who they really are as people not just labels and cliches. Soon it’s not all business between them, but something a whole lot more intimate. But although Emerson is letting down her walls around Hunter, he has some secrets he’s holding back that may just end things before they even begin.

What I loved about it:
Down and Dirty had humor, heat and heart. I wasn’t expecting such an emotional read but it showed you a side of Hunter that fleshed him out. It was hard to read about his family life but I also respected that he had to deal with his issues in his own way. I loved that Hunter was such an affectionate person. He was always touching, holding, hugging and kissing that it was kind of addictive to read about. But he was also not afraid to verbalize his feelings. He saw Emerson and wanted her and he did everything he could to win a chance at forever with her.

As for Emerson, she was a really nice heroine and I mean nice because when Hunter shows his flawed side, it aint pretty. She put up with a lot from him because she knew it was the right thing to do and I kind of loved that about her. She genuinely cared for Hunter and wasn’t afraid to reach out to him even knowing that this could mean the end for them. I’m glad that things worked out for both of them in the end but I did have to bring out the tissues towards the end there.

What I didn’t like about it:
This is just my own feelings but when I read about a couple and like them together as much as I liked Hunter and Emerson, its twice as hard to read a bad break up or dramatic blow out between them. Hunter goes through some heartbreaking stuff and he’s in a really dark place so I get why he lashes out, but it doesn’t make it any easier to sympathize with him and at the same time want to beat him over the head for treating Emerson so crappy.

Memorable Moments:
There are actually a couple of memorable moments in this one.
1. The erotic statues scene– I loved this scene, it was hilarious and scorching hot all wrapped into one yummy package. Like seriously I was laughing one minute and mad blushing the next. Where, as before, there was simmering sexual tension, the dam pretty much broke during this scene. It was some hot and heavy smut and did I mention memorable?

2. The second most memorable moment is when Hunter mentions he is a twin. His devotion for his sister really got to me. My heart broke for him because he was so clearly a brother grieving for his sister.

DOWN & DIRTY is a fast paced romance with lots of steamy sexual encounters. I do love those hot and heavy scenes but I wished there was a little more character development and a little less steam. This is where I'm torn. Wolff, in the end, made my heart hurt for Hunter and Emerson but there was still something missing in their connection. If you emotionally connect with me, which Wolff does, then its a really great read. If you emotionally invest me, then its an outstanding read. DOWN & DIRTY was a truly great read that borders outstanding so I'm giving it 4.5 stars.

Quick, easy and entertaining and still manages to pull on your heart strings, DOWN & DIRTY was a great contemporary romance escape.

Ehhhhh...

2. El spicy estaba like very weird.

What a great read Down & Dirty turned out to be, I loved it!

I enjoyed the storyline, it was entertaining all throughout the book. The characters Emerson and Hunter were wonderful characters that I easily connected with. They made me laugh, they made me swoon and watching them fall in love made this such a joy to read.

Wow, what a great read!

Emerson and Hunter meet in a quirky, fun and in Hunter’s opinion, sexy way. Emerson isn’t very happy to find herself at his disposal due to his machinations with her boss. Now she’s stuck with him but is hoping to turn it around to benefit her bank account.

I really enjoyed this couple and watching their relationship develop. It’s pretty fast moving but they’ve spent a lot of time together so it works. Emerson is a strong heroine who is struggling down the path she has chosen. Hunter comes with a situation that isn’t going to get better and has the promise of breaking his heart. Together they are complete but life and sometimes painful decisions get in the way.

Filled with lots of humor, OMG sex that will melt your Kindle and characters that I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of this is definitely one you’ll want to check out.

Off to Google “butter churner”.

Tracy Wolff certainly has a way of writing steamy scene after steamy scene, though quite a bit of the book reads like a porn movie set, where characters meet perfunctorily and get hit hard by lust. Resistance (there’s a little of it), of course, is futile when constant penile erections and hardened nipples and wet slits suddenly take over.

The physical aspect of ‘Down and Dirty’ was never in doubt when Hunter zeroed straight in—from the very first meeting—like a panting dog in heat on Emerson, as I wondered if this book could better be classified as erotica than contemporary chick-lit. But I lost count of the number of ways he imagined her in all the sex positions, her lips doing dirty things to him and so on, up until the point where I finally decided that Hunter was a bad bet all around, led around mostly by his dick (and posturing a lot with it too), with copious amounts of dirty descriptions dedicated to how much he liked Emerson’s sexy body. And because Emerson is more special than his numerous one-night hookups, he has to relearn how to ‘woo’ a woman, which in his book, means loading her with lavish gifts that his wealth affords him.

Apart from Hunter's concern for his ailing sister, I was inclined to think he was generally a classless act with mood swings and obscene excess (as is typically written of the lifestyle of the superrich), crude but bland, yet cockily arrogant with very little character depth. His rationale for only having hookups was that his mind was already full with his family problems, yet there was no issue diving into this routine with Emerson when it suited him. When things took a turn for the worse, he pushed her away in the nastiest way possible, unable to deal with the overwhelming emotions—all typical alpha male behaviour that still surprises me with its stupidity at times.

And while Wolff certainly portrays the grieving process well, I couldn’t get over his callous treatment of Emerson, almost as though grief gave him license to be an idiot around others. I didn’t think very much of Hunter at all at the end as a result, especially since it felt as though he merely used Emerson as a bandage slapped over wounds, or that he was with her in a bid to keep a part of his life from spinning out of control.

Emerson fared somewhat better in my opinion, standing her ground against him, though you do know her issues will crumble under Hunter’s oh-so-experienced, superior touch. From there (and it’s just a week!), the falling in love bit came easily...perhaps too easily for me. She’s nevertheless, somewhat more multifaceted, with deeper perspectives and an more unshakeable sense of compassion than Hunter's tunnel vision on women, football and his sister, which made me wonder just how much he really deserved her.

I tried to enjoy this, I really did. I did like how the introduction of an dying sibling gave the story more gravitas than a contemporary romance would have, though I’m not quite convinced yet that it’d helped shaped the pairing out to be a more solid and believable one that successfully weathered a storm together, because they didn’t quite do so. So unfortunately it didn’t quite work for me as I prefer my stories with a bit more narrative and character depth. But if getting hot and bothered is your primary goal, then ‘Down and Dirty’ would be it.

Dang it! I had good intentions of reviewing this book, but sometimes life has a habit of getting in the way. So now (weeks after I've finished it) I can't remember all the juicy details.:( I do remember that I thoroughly enjoyed it, but that's not enough of a review to do this justice. Maybe if I have a chance, I'll do a quick reread...
Anyway, I wouldn't hesitate to read more from this author, especially if she comes up with any more sports heroes!

I've never read anything by Tracy Wolff but after the first chapter of this book ... I'm a lifelong fan. Dude. Within a few paragraphs, I laughed and cringed and got irritated and swoony ... it ... was ... awesome!!

I think that it was an instant love type thing with the main character, Emerson. She is a firecracker that will stand up for what she thinks, no matter who the audience is. She's a take no shit lady and I wish I could be her if I ever grow up. I loved how when the chips were down, she bucked up and basically said, "Not today, Satan!" Who wouldn't love a chick like that! Or anyone, for that matter. Well ... I'd prefer if our boys didn't buck up to me but anyone over the age of 18 whose underwear I don't have to clean should totally do it. It was refreshing to get to live her story for just a little bit.

Now, Hunter. That asshat. And a cocky one at that. He just couldn't fathom that women aren't just fainting at his feet. And I loved every second of it. As irritated as I wanted to be with this ornery dude, I just couldn't. I couldn't not like him. I couldn't not smile every time his stupid name showed up on the page.

And these two together ... it was explosive. It made me tear through the pages like a mad woman just eating everything up. Usually, I write tons of notes on the books that I'm reading but this one, not one. I read it in one sitting while my preteen and teenage monsters were at school and I really wanted to pick it back up when I was finished to give it another go. Everything was perfect - the chemistry between Emerson and Hunter, the plot, the pace of the novel, the secondary characters, the descriptions ... just everything.

I've been in a bit of a book slump and this book completely pulled me out of it. I can't wait to see what Wolff's other novels are like because if they are anything like this one ... my book bill this month will be pretty high and I'm going to have to think of a way to distract my husband away from how I'm going to $3.99 us into bankruptcy. It will be well worth it, I just know it.

4.75 stars for me. I definitely enjoyed this one, and I will be checking out more of Tracy Wolff's books.

Without giving too much of the plot away, I thought the relationship between Emerson and Hunter was quite lovely, even though it moved pretty fast. Hunter was such an alpha, which really gets me, and I loved how he was almost instantly protective of Emerson when he found out where she lived. Emerson, on the other hand, definitely doesn't need someone to take care of her, and she makes that very clear to him.

I really connected with both characters as they dealt with tragedy, and my heart broke for everyone involved.

I always have to comment on grammar and sentence structure, and, while there were a few little things that I noticed, overall it was quite well written and I didn't roll my eyes at all at any cheesy dialogue.

I will definitely be checking out the next book in this series, and I'm hoping we will be treated to the stories of Hunter's friends on his team.

4.5 Stars!

I pretty much loved this book! I'm not a sports fan but for some reason I love sports romance books. I especially love them when the famous quarterback meets the heroine and can see no other woman. I wasn't so sure how this would turn out at first. Hunter, the famous quarterback, was kind of a douche to Emerson when they first meet. There was insta-lust between both of them but Emerson doesn't suffer no fools. She tried to put him in his place but the more she did that the more smitten he became which just made this a very fun read. While it started out very fun, we do get to a serious topic towards the end that just elevated my connection to the story.

Insta-lust that quicky turns to insta-love. No violence or sexual abuse. No other women/men drama.
It does tackle the subject of cancer. ARC provided by Netgalley.

Down & Dirty is a fast-paced romance centered around a real-estate agent and a football player with steamy scenes but an improbable plot.

Quarterback Hunter Browning and rookie realtor Emerson Day have a less than ideal first meeting, but the chemistry is instantaneous despite Emerson's infuriation. As she shows him houses over the course of the next few days, their relationship progresses but outside tragedies may prove the undoing of it all.

The book is a very quick and entertaining read. The chemistry is well-written and palpable, and the premise is unique for a story about a football star. However, the characters and character development are fairly shallow. This could be attributed to the length of the book, but neither of the characters seem particularly fleshed out as the majority of the attention is paid to the plot. The relationship in general seems strongly infeasible - the majority of the book takes place over only a few days. The realism of the chemistry is enough though that the one dimensionality can be skimmed over, especially in a quick read. Overall, there is just a lot going on in a fairly short period of time that doesn't seem particularly realistic, but it is a decent fast, light read for romance lovers.

Thanks to the publisher for an ARC in exchange for a fair review!

This is one of the funniest, sexiest, sweetest, most sad books I've ever read. So grab a glass of whatever you like to drink, some tissues because you won't just need them for crying, you'll need them because you'll laugh so hard your eyes will water and sit down and read this book. It is amazing.

When red-headed Emerson needs her car to work on her first day of work it won't. It's raining. And she gets the absolutely slowest Uber driver in the state for her ride. That's not the end, that's just the beginning of this crazy day for her.

When Hunter pulls into the real estate agency he hits a puddle and splashes this chick in a white shirt with the dirty water. Plus for him, she's hot and has wild red hair and a fiery temper. But he doesn't mind it at all.

This is just the beginning of this crazy funny, sappy, sad, and loving book.

Title: Down & Dirty
Author: Tracy Wolff
Genre: Sports Romance
Publication Date: May 23, 2017
4 Stars

*This story is for mature audiences only. Contains explicit scenes and language intended for adults 18+

Synopsis:

My Thoughts:
I love sports romance and I had a great time reading this football star and fiery redhead romance! Emerson is a spitfire and she gives as good as she gets and doesn’t let Hunter get anything over on her.

Emerson and Hunter are thrown together by fate and soon are falling in love until tragedy strikes Hunter’s life. Emerson is everything that Hunter could ever want in his life, she is beautiful, caring, smart and her smart mouth and wit just makes him fall for her more. Emerson can’t help but not be charmed by the fabulous Hunting Browning, but there is so much more to this man than what the media and his fans think.

This is a fast paced and insta-love read. The characters were engaging and the story does have some emotion to it. The story also has great humor and I had quite a few laugh out loud moments. Their chemistry is off the charts.

I really enjoyed this book, the only thing is the story ended a little too quick for me. I would have liked a little more to the epilogue.

This book didn’t turn out the way I hoped. It was incredibly fast-paced, excessively so in my opinion. The author didn’t take the time to develop the relationship between the characters, their connection was too instant to appear realistic. This story had potential, though, and I did enjoy Tracy Wolff’s writing.

Hunter Browning , a wealthy and famous quarterback, is looking for a new house. Emerson is a newbie in the real estate business, and yet Hunter insists that she is the one to show him potential houses to purchase. Emerson has a red-hot temper and Hunter enjoys pushing her buttons. Their interactions are a welcome distraction, he has a lot on his plate. His sister is dying and he will soon become his niece and nephew’s legal guardian, hence the need to find a new house. He tries to control his emotions, his heartbreak and anxiety about the future.

Emerson is insecure, she feels she is a nobody compared to Hunter and she is convinced that they have no future together, despite their intense chemistry.

Even though this book was just okay for me, it won’t keep me from reading any of Tracy Wolff’s other books.

Do you know that feeling after you have read a truly outstanding book and you really can't focus on giving a review? Yeah, that's what I am going through. I'm just BLOWN AWAY. I was already following this author, but she just crept a little farther up my favorites list.

The book started out sweet and funny, making it easy to get into. It got really sexy, but you are already vested by that time. It had an extremely sad spot, but all the while you still have a sweet romance. It still ends in a HEA.

When I began reading Down & Dirty, I never had a clue what an emotional ride this book would take me on. Tracy surprises her readers with a story that seems like it would be your typical jock romance but ends up embedding itself so deeply within your heart that you can barely breathe. Emerson and Hunter scorch both our minds and the sheets with their witty, sexual banter and their passion that spills out and sears everyone whenever they are around one another.

Hunter Browning is a sexy NFL quarterback that has all the charm and swagger to melt a woman's panties or in Emerson's case fuel her temper. At first his cocky persona was not impressing me much until Tracy has us digging deep into Hunter's troubled world and then a reader can't help but fall head over heels for this hero that has the biggest heart and has become one of the sexiest book boyfriends that I have ever had the pleasure of getting to know. I can't even imagine the type of emotional upheaval Hunter is living with and I was so happy to see the instant attraction and love that develops between him and Emerson.

Emerson Day is my type of heroine that tells it like it is regardless of how famous or rich a person is. She is strong, independent, and one hell of a fiery red head! I loved seeing her sass and how she handles Hunter from the moment he soaks her clothes and gives her his cocky attitude. But what I enjoyed even more is experiencing how Hunter handles her in the bedroom...or out of it, wherever they might be getting down and dirty at that moment. They are wild, hot, and make a reader melt in all the right places!

Tracy Wolff delivers a profound story disguised with a quarterback's hotness. Never has a book surprised me more and left me an emotional wreck and with a mixture of sad and happy tears streaming down my face. I highly recommend Down & Dirty for a romance that sends both your heart and your libido for a long pass into the goal. I cannot wait to read about more of the “Lightning boys” that Tracy has created. These football hotties have already proven to have such soft hearts to go along with their big muscled bodies and I long to meet the women who steal their hearts!

3 "Because I happen to like weird." Stars

Tracy Wolff took a hot quarterback and paired him with a quirky real estate agent in her latest book, Down & Dirty. I like Tracy Wolff romance books because the heavy never outweighs the fun and sexy. In this book she's created two likeable characters who are compatible. Their relationship moves at warp speed covering the insta-love trope. The drama and conflict presented for the hero, Hunter, hits deep and is relevant but Wolff doesn't saturate you with it. There's hope and lightness to the story that makes it fun and satisfying. Emerson, our heroine, stands tall and proud in the story never relinquishing exactly who she is. I loved her sass and how she handled everything in her life from her job to Hunter.

Wolff's writing always engages me. And her characters always have chemistry. Down & Dirty simplistically tells a story of two people who meet and quickly become enamored with one another. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. There's not a lot of depth to the plot so I didn't feel an immense connection or emotional charge to the characters or story but I really enjoyed reading how these two characters came together and kept it together through the book. It's a great Sunday afternoon read or beach type romance read.

Down & Dirty exceeded my expectations. I thought this would be yaur typical contemporary sports romance, but there’s a lot more to this story than just a sexy football player finding love. I laughed from the moment I started reading, and I didn’t stop until the end. I also cried a few tears, because this story also has a lot of heart. Tracy Wolff got me in all the right ways, and I thoroughly enjoyed this layered, thoughtful and heartfelt romance.

Emerson and Hunter meet when his truck hits a puddle and thoroughly drenches her as she is walking in the door for her new job—a job she really needs. She might recognize the famous, handsome quarterback, but she is not impressed and gives him a piece of her mind. He’s used to women falling all over themselves to impress him; therefore, he’s caught off guard when Emerson seems to really dislike him. He loves it!

Hunter is instantly smitten and wants to get to know Emerson, but his life is complicated right now and he feels like he needs to focus on it rather than a woman. Emerson's life is no cakewalk either, and she is sure a professional football player could distract her from her current goals. But both can’t deny—or resist—the strong pull between them, and they find themselves trying to balance love and life.

Emerson and Hunter are both endearing characters and some of my favorites that I have read this year. Emerson is spunky and funny while Hunter is adorable, sensitive and sexy. He is dealing with a lot, and I fell in love with him as I witnessed him coping with some heartbreaking realities. He really got me. The sexual tension between them builds quickly, and they can’t keep their hands off each other, but they are also able to build a solid friendship and relationship. Down & Dirty truly has everything—witty banter, steamy moments, a tear-jerker subplot, and a deeply satisfying romance—and I loved every page of it.
