First comes…the baby in the baby carriage? All I wanted to do was show Cole Jacobson that I wasn’t the same girl he passed over ten years ago. This time around I’d be the one rejecting him. Only now I’m a pregnant-out-of-wedlock, promise-ring-wearing Christian woman.
I think we can all agree things got out of hand.
As if being pregnant with the man I love to hate’s baby isn’t complicated enough, there’s his mayoral campaign to think about. Cole can’t afford a pregnancy scandal right at the beginning of his political career, which means he’s willing to do whatever it takes to keep me happy. Only, Cole trying to make me happy keeps throwing me off kilter until I can’t trust my own feelings. Do I hate Cole? Or do I love him?
I’ve been burned by Cole before. I won’t let it happen again. To protect my heart, I’ve got to strike back. Cole Jacobson, this means war.
But the more time I spend with Cole the more I remember why I fell in love with him so many years ago. Is it possible God can redeem our mistake and give us our very own love story?
This Means War is a Christian romantic comedy full of sizzling chemistry but without any explicit scenes.
What an absolute delight this book has been! I found it a pleasure to read....the banter was witty and made me laugh heartily quite often. Their rascally pranks were amusing, as they were both spunky people. I thought it was quite satisfying with the resolutions and the happily ever after.
The spiritual elements were done beautifully as the fmc realized how we all mess up at times but that doesn't change the love God has for us; unlike our earthly parents who can be fickle and dependant upon successes. The wise older couple extended such love, concern, and common sense at times. The Biblical truths were presented in natural ways that warmed my heart!
I am impressed with this author as a Christian one who isn't afraid to include Jesus into her stories and would gladly purchase more of hers to read. I am kind of still on this supporting new authors kick it seems by checking them out for curiosity as well as hopefully enjoyment too. So, she is one I can definitely recommend to anyone really but especially young adults as a treat to read :)
What a beautiful story. I don't usually read Christian romcoms - to be honest, it's hard to find them in the UK. But I found this genuinely funny, sensitive and lifegiving. Reading this, you get to watch two people learning how to love each other, despite flaws and misunderstandings. I love that. Where I'm normally quite skeptical of the marriage-of-convenience trope (how can it be done well without devaluing marriage?), the redemption arc of both characters fed into the marriage too. How they went into the marriage was not where they ended up! I loved the journey. My only reservation with this book would be the first section. Whilst I appreciated the history between Cole and Lydia, and that the writer didn't want to focus on anything that happened in the bedroom between them, I did find it hard to believe that they slept together. They found each other attractive, and they already knew each other, but then it skipped to the morning after, which then made me struggle to understand Lydia's character, as it seemed really inconsistent with who she was. Plus, she didn't seem to remember anything. It makes the question of consent a really difficult one, and that throws a whole different light on Cole, who after that point, turns into a perfect protective MMC. To the point where I wondered, where did he learn all this if he wasn't even a believer? But having said all this, if you just go with it, this is a page-turner which I stayed up far too late to read! I loved the positive messages, the way that Scripture was used, and I think anyone in a similar situation to Lydia reading this book would get such a message of hope and restoration. My favourite quote from the book is this 'Love and PMS cover a multitude of sins.' Someone should make a fridge magnet of that one.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: Christian romcom Content: implied intimacy between an unmarried couple resulting in pregnancy (not on page), allergic reaction requiring EpiPen (on page), makeouts, some innuendo
I really enjoyed this book! Years ago, Cole snubbed Lydia and his rejection followed her through the rest of her high school experience. Now, she wants to get back at him. It was supposed to end with her rejecting him with the same phrase he used back then...but instead, she ends up sleeping with him which results in a pregnancy.
She had been drinking, which honestly is the only way this whole scenario could be believable. It was clear in Lydia's POV that she was waiting for marriage and that she'd broken off her last two relationships because the men didn't want to wait. So, even with the alcohol consumption, this part was a stretch for me. It's hard to imagine someone so committed to her values having sex for THE FIRST TIME without letting the guy know it was her first time, even while drunk.
Once they found out about the pregnancy, they got married-- to save face for both Cole's mayoral campaign and for Lydia's job at a Christian school. I loved how Cole was committed to taking care of Lydia during the pregnancy but that didn't stop their prank war. Admittedly, I hate pranks myself but it was fun to read about them!
Lydia and Cole both had things to work on in their relationships with God. Lydia was letting the shame of her mistake and her guilt distance her from God and Cole couldn't acknowledge that having God in his life would be helpful. I enjoyed seeing how they both opened up to the Lord and invited him back into their lives.
Favorite Quotes: 😂”Voters like relatable people, yes, but they also like happy marriages. Do you see what I'm saying here?" I study him with unblinking eyes for a minute, then turn to Cole. "I'm sorry, but did your campaign manager just propose to me?"
😏 "Gosh, I'd be offended if I didn't know what sort of books you like to read." I bend down, so my lips are close to her ear. "Pretty sure you're more into rakish scoundrel types like me anyway."
🤪 She looks at me defiantly as if daring me to call her crazy. She's definitely crazy. I only wish I were less attracted to her crazy.
😍 "And Lydia," Cole catches me by the arm, and I look back; intensity shines from his brown eyes as he bends down to whisper in my ear, "pregnant or not, don't think for a second that you're not the most gorgeous woman here."
🔥 "Lydia Jacobson," my voice comes out husky, "are you trying to use your feminine wiles against me?" Her lips bow into a satisfied smile. "You think I have feminine wiles?" I bend down, positioning my mouth right by her ear before replying. "In Spades."
💋 "Before I kiss you," he goes on, "I just wanted to make sure you knew exactly what you do to me." Now his breath is in my ear, "You captivate my heart."
❤️ Let me declare to the world that I choose you and that I want to spend the rest of my life choosing you—day in and day out."
4.5⭐️ ARC Review: When I heard this was a Christian marriage of convenience, I immediately signed up to read it, and it did not disappoint. It is a rom-com, but it still deals with heavy subjects, such as feeling that you are not worthy of God's love after making mistakes. And what a healing journey it was for both of these characters.
I think that's what I love in most of the marriage of convenience books l've read. The characters go through hard things, and because of those things, they grow closer together. Cole and Lydia's story was exactly that. You get to watch them learn to love each other, despite their flaws and misfortunes. And oh my heart. It was such a beautiful story.
I’ll be honest, I was a bit hesitant during those first few chapters. I definitely judged this book too soon, but I pressed on and it has become one of my favorite marriage of convenience books.
*Thank you to the author, Heather Miekstyn, for the complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Read if you enjoy: - Christian romance - Marriage of convenience - Brother’s best friend - Accidental pregnancy - Dual POV
Content 💋: - No language - Kisses only (implied intimacy obviously 🤪)
If I could give this 6 stars I would. Go read this ASAP!!
Lydia may be dutifully helping Cole win the mayoral campaign but that's as far as her support goes. When it comes to the prank war....he's going down. And she certainly won't lose her heart to him (again)...no matter how many times he buys her Pop Tarts.
If only Cole, aka Enemy Number 1, had known that a little spill of mustard would have brought his carefully structured world crashing down around him, maybe he wouldn't have had mustard that day. Or maybe it was exactly what he needed to rebuild everything the right way.
Follow Lydia and Cole as they navigate politics, family, scandal, marriage, and most importantly their faith. When a one night stand turns into so much more they learn many things about each other and just how much they need the Lord.
This was such a beautiful book about the Lord's grace, redemption, and presence in our lives. Beautiful book and you should definitely go read it ASAP!!!!
So thankful to have been on this ARC team and I can't wait for this book to be released!!!
Unfortunately, I did not connect with this book the way I had hoped… I DNF at 28%. I found myself having to constantly keep forcing myself to continue reading even though I was getting frustrated with the storyline. I kept wanting to see how God was going to redeem their attitudes, but I just couldn’t get to that point. I was not a fan of how concerned Cole was with his image even though he chose to have sex. I was thoroughly disappointed in the immaturity of both Cole and Lydia. I found that “accidental pregnancy” is not a good name for this type of trope. I feel like it should be called “unplanned pregnancy” because if you’re choosing to have sexual relations, it’s not an accident, it’s just bad decisions.
Thank you Heather for the opportunity to read your book. I do appreciate and apologize for not being a fan of this particular story. 🩵
Seriously, this book was sooo good. It was one of those books that made it hard to focus on responsibilities because I just wanted to blow everything off and keep reading. Heather Miekstyn keeps outdoing herself again and again and is probably becoming my favorite author if she’s not already there (which she very well may be.) Never before have I come across a book like this. But it’s so important! Especially in Christian fiction! Because it shows such a humanness and displays God’s grace in such a powerful way that you’ll really just need to read for yourself. Plus the love story is super cute and fun. I’m so thankful to have been able to read this for free on KU while that’s my only current book budget but this book was so good, I’m definitely putting a physical copy at the top of my Christmas wishlist
Oh my goodness... I am absolutely blown away by this book. Heather Miekstyn is a favorite of mine, and I have adored every one of her books, but this one is truly something special. It was the perfect blend of laugh out loud humor, swoon worthy romance and genuine faith... with a rollercoaster of emotions throughout. One moment, I would find myself in tears... and the next, I was laughing out loud over the incredible banter and pranks between Cole and Lydia. Honestly, an unplanned pregnancy following a one-night stand is probably not what most people expect in a Christian read, and perhaps that will turn a lot of readers away... but their story truly had one of the most beautiful faith messages that I have seen in a CF book in a long time. All too often, I feel like characters in Christian novels can feel almost too perfect, which just isn't realistic to me. I loved seeing characters who aren't perfect and fall short. Admittedly, I didn't like Cole too much at first... but seeing him grow in faith as the story goes on? There was something really beautiful about that. Likewise, seeing Lydia's struggles with feeling not worthy of God's grace was something that I feel many readers are going to relate to in one way or another. Their story was unconventional and messy, but also beautiful and redemptive. I couldn't put it down and know it is one that is going to stick with me for a very long time. It has been one of my very favorite reads so far this year. If you have ever felt that your mistakes are too big for God's grace, that you've failed to be a 'good Christian' or that He's punishing you for said mistakes, this book is an absolute must read.
This Means War is a closed-door Christian romcom. Given the subject, there is obviously implied intimacy between an unmarried couple, but this all happens off pages with no details given.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
A SUPER cute romance! Such a good book - had me laughing in between flowing tears. My feelings were at the brink all throughout reading, and it might be my PMS talking, but as the wonderful Lydia Jacobson once said, "PMS and love cover a multitude of sins."
Minor spoilers ahead!
I was so mad and sad at the beginning when she just would not go to God with her problems and shame. At one point I was even screaming at her, "JUST GO TO GOD! HE LOVES YOU!" That's how you know a book is good, when you just want to have a talk with the MC to tell them the truth.
My tears were just streaming when she eventually went to church and they read John 8 - I felt that in my heart. Even with all of this it wasn't the most Christian book I've ever read, and in one way I wished that it would've been, but I also understand why not. In one way it was a part of the story, but also it is a story that is true to many - even I. To think that God is angry at us and is punishing us is something a lot of us fight. This Means War really shows us though that His grace is sufficient towards us and that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God.
There was quite some miscommunication, which if it was any other book I would not have liked, but the scene where they told each other the truth was just...😙🤌😍
And last but not least, I just want to say that this book had one of the best side characters ever - not a best friend, or college, or anyone like that - but Saul 🥰. Such a sweet old man, that Saul, and with the sweetest little wife and their faith in God 😍.
All in all, I will be recommending this book to anyone who is looking for a good romance 😊
I have no word if I can give this book more than five stars I would. This is a marriage of conceive trope. After one mistaken night Lydia and Cole have more than one problem. To save Cole’s campaign he suggests to Lydia that they get married that way she also doesn’t have to face all the questions and save her job at a Christian school.
Walking through the consequences of what happens when they make a mistake is heart wrenching and uplifting. I usually tend to read books that are closed door kiss only and this is that it only mentions what happens.
This book broke my heart and put all back together. It shows how we need to learn to forgive ourselves as God forgives us. Even though this is not an easy journey. It is not all sad. The jokes and happiness from Cole and Lydia seeps through this book. They are such a cute couple! They have so many hoops to jump through yet they still willing to build their friendship. Making jokes with each other and seeing each other’s true personalities.
By the end of this book I was a mess, but in a good way. If you’re looking for a sweet romance with a tough subject, and Christian themes read this book!
Content: * Kiss only * Mention of more * No foul language * Christian theme
I received this book an ARC in return for an HONEST review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and are not persuaded in any way.
“The truth is we all need God. He’s the only answer for our innate desire to be loved and approved, the only answer to where can I find true rest from the struggles of this world?”
“Lydia, ten years ago I spun a bottle and chose the wrong girl.”
Okay first and foremost I’m so incredibly proud of Heather . She did something so brave by changing genres to Christian Romance (and if you read the acknowledgments at the end you’ll know just how special this choice was). I loved this book and to be honest I was nervous at first because the MMC was very unlikeable, but as the story progressed so did he and I began to soften my heart towards him. I adored Lydia from the get go! There were fun moments between them like the pranks, the frog room 😂, and the cereal fight. The christian aspect was what made the ending such a beautiful one. I love books like this that remind you of what’s really important. One last side note I LOVED the type 1 diabetes representation! Heather thanks for being one of my favorite authors and being true to you!
I will come back with words to express what this book was for me.
This book is one of those books that will stick with you for life, well for me it will. This story by Heather Miekstyn is something I have been searching for for awhile now, a story of redemption and forgiveness for sexual sin.
Sometimes we need characters that aren't all innocent and perfect, we need characters that we can relate to, have a past, that are working through past hurts and pain.
Even though the story is one of such a dividing subject (I know some will not enjoy the pre marital sex aspect) but it is handled with such grace and love.
This story is heart-warming and funny and I could not put it down. There is such great rivalry and chemistry between Cole and Lydia. I loved the pranks, lots of laugh out loud moments.
My favourite part of the story is not until close to the end and involves a conversation in a bathroom it is such a lovely scene.
Heather has written several romcoms, but this is her Christian romance debut, and she did such a beautiful job with it!
It’s a heartwarming story with a lovely blend of humor, romance, and faith elements.
I loved Lydia with her fun personality, her kindness to everyone, and the sweet way she eventually felt God’s grace for her.
I also loved Cole. An accidental pregnancy might’ve brought them together, but I loved how committed he was to her and the way he cared for her. I also appreciated his growth in realizing he couldn’t do things on his own.
Together these two were just the cutest, and I’m so happy they got their HEA.
What I loved: Banter Flirting Pranks Milkshakes Forgiveness Diabetes rep Closed door
I love this sweet story, and would recommend it to anyone that enjoys closed door romances with strong faith elements.
I was honestly skeptical at first since this isn’t my usual type of contemporary romance, but This Means War surprised me in the best way. It was also my very first Christian rom-com, and I ended up really enjoying it.
What stood out most to me were the messages of forgiveness, grace, and learning to depend on God alone. I loved how God turned brokenness into something beautiful in the end—it was such a powerful reminder of His goodness.
The characters were very likable, and while Cole did annoy me at times with his stubbornness and pride, I appreciated watching his growth. I especially loved how he moved away from seeking his parents’ approval to finding his identity in God. That was such a beautiful and convicting theme, because so often we look for the appreciation of people, when God already loves us in our mess.
This story of redemption was heartwarming and uplifting, and I’m glad I gave it a chance.
This has been on my TBR for a long time & was my first Heather book. I’m definitely going to be reading more by her! Cole and Lydia had such good chemistry. Their mutual caretaking really strengthened their bond and showed their true feelings for one another. Lydia’s interactions with others and her humor made her a likable FMC. Cole’s emotional arc was probably my favorite part of the story, and him softening his heart to the Lord was so needed. I do think the miscommunication led to petulant behavior in both MCs, so I wanted to shake them both at times and tell them to not act before talking to the other. I would’ve liked more time spent in the three month jump in time, as I feel like a lot of events happened that needed to be fleshed out more. Overall, if you like a romcom that shows God’s grace & His redemption for our sin through Jesus’ sacrifice, this one’s for you!
The dedication… I was tearing up just reading the dedication. For every woman who grew up in purity culture… you need to read this book.
Heather is a new favorite author of mine, and This Means War is my new favorite book.
It’s so well done. The humor. The chemistry. The banter. The faith. It’s perfect. It’s a romcom, but it still brought tears to my eyes. It’s been a few hours since I finished the book that I’m typing this up… and I’m not over it. I love Cole and Lydia. I love their journey.
No matter where you are in a relationship or out of a relationship. Whether you’re really close to God, or maybe you’re struggling. Maybe… you’ve felt like God is punishing you. That’s how Lydia felt… and I’ve felt that too. This book spoke to me. It was a reminder that God is a God of grace and mercy. And He loves His children.
So go, put this book on your TBR. Preorder it. You need it.
Lydia is a devoted Christian who is saving herself for marriage, but when she bumps into Cole (her brothers best friend) at the airport she is reminded of him rejecting her 10 years earlier and is determined to reject him this time. Instead, she wakes up in bed next to him.. oops! 🫣 Wracked with guilt, they go their separate ways only for Lydia to wind up pregnant. Cole is running for Mayor and can’t afford a scandal so he is willing to do whatever it takes to keep Lydia happy. As Lydia goes forward with her pregnancy, she struggles to forgive herself, and isn’t sure God will forgive her either. It was a beautiful book about God’s mercy with Cole & Lydia being very relatable characters. I really enjoyed it!
-Christian romance -Marriage of Convenience -Prank wars -Closed Door / Kisses Only
This book is a MUST READ. Period. End of discussion.
You will LAUGH with the prank wars and goofy phobias.
You will FEEL the deep connections with the main characters as they work through very common and very human emotions of shame, longing for unconditional love, unworthiness, desire for perfection, success, and to prove one’s worth and not show weakness or reliance on others.
You will SiGH with the sweet moments of tenderness as they choose each other and learn to show it.
You will HOPE with the main characters as they slowly discover “the one my heart loves” and pray that love is returned.
You will CRY through smiles with the sweet resolutions and confessions of love, forgiveness, redemption, and new life.
And it is my prayer that you will know that YOUR STORY has that same happy ending of love, forgiveness, redemption, and new life in Jesus.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is the author's Christian romance debut and it was fantastic. This Means War is told through Lydia and Cole's pov and is a beautiful story about forgiveness and redemption.
CW: an allergic reaction, mentions of physical intimacy (not in a vulgar way), and a toxic ex Spice: kisses that don't get heated and fade to black
The subject matter is one that Christian authors and readers may like to avoid but stories Like Lydia's need to be told. The author approached it with grace and humor. Both Lydia and Cole had visions for how they expected their lives to look like and I enjoyed their journey as they adjusted to their reality. Readers will be able to feel Lydia's feelings, even if they haven't experienced the same situation, and will root for Cole as his priorities shift and his actions reflect wanting to be a true family with Lydia. While I'm not sure how some will feel about the pranks they played on each other, I found them entertaining and also liked that both were flawed characters with room to grow. The author did a great job in developing their characters. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and would like to read more stories like Lydia and Cole's.
I’m sorry, but no. I waited for this book to come out on KU and I was so disappointed. Why does every character only care about “me”, “me”, “me”. I literally couldn’t finish this book. After 21%, I skimmed over the chapters and so glad I didn’t read it all. I rarely ever give this low of a rating but I seriously couldn’t with this book. Lydia is whiny and impractical and Cole is just as annoying. Getting married because you got someone pregnant is literally just as irresponsible. I’m giving it 2 stars ONLY because I didn’t read every word. Maybe it has some redeeming parts but I couldn’t give it more than that.
This Means War was a beautiful Christian romantic comedy.
Banter Prank War Enemies-to-friends-lovers Inspiring moments Beautiful chemistry Closed door romance Forgiveness, support and redemption
Many thanks to author, Heather Miekstyn, for the opportunity to read this lovely and inspiring story. Her books always deliver an uplifting theme full of grace. This is my honest review. All opinions expressed are solely my own. #shortbookthyme @shortbookthyme
This Means War is a Christian romcom with a strong redemption arc. It is funny, swoony, and relatable! This story is my new favorite of all of Heather’s work (I’ve read most of her books). Storylines include brother’s best friend, accidental pregnancy, prank wars, and GRACE. It is a beautiful story that reminds the believer that there’s nothing in our lives that God can’t and won’t redeem when we yield it to Him.
Wow! This is easily one of my new favorite Christian rom coms. I love how Miekstyn GOES there. Sex can be a taboo subject in Christian fiction, but she handled it so tastefully. Not to mention it was HILARIOUS and the pacing was perfect. There was not a single moment I wanted to put this book down.
I would like to personally thank Megan, her long-time beta reader and friend, for encouraging her to publish this book. I believe it is go to speak to so many young women.
This romcom was so good; I couldn't put it down! It was full of action, pranks, banter, and a villain who tried everything to tear Lydia and Cole apart. I loved the faith arcs, and the character development. So well done. The chemistry between Cole and Lydia was palpable. I thoroughly enjoyed being sucked into the plot, and unsurprisingly, I needed to find out how they reached their happy ending. I highly recommend this book.
This book was SO good!! I absolutely loved this book and devoured it in just a few days. There were so many sweet moments in this book. I loved how Heather made a story that started with a very real mistake that many make, but showed the redemption we can have if we just seek God for forgiveness and then live for Him. The beauty He creates from the ashes. The grace, mercy, forgiveness, and love that only truly comes from the Lord. I highly recommend this book!
To say this book hooked me is an understatement. It sounds terrible but i usually don’t go for a christian rom com (even though I love the Lord lol) they are usually to cringe and predictable. BUT THISSSS. 10/10. Everything about it the story line, the characters, the drama, all of itttt!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was very happy with this read! it is so hard to find clean romance books these days. This was a really good read this was my first book I've read by Heather Miekstyn I had never heard of her and she deserves to be known!!! her books are clean and amazing I was super happy with the book and can't wait to pick up more of her books!!!
Oh my goodness I loved this book! I was laughing and grinning throughout the whole book! This Christian romcom was a perfect balance of God and his grace, repentance, and our need for God as well as being a romcom. This book kept me on my toes the whole time and I loved it!
What a fun book. The teasing banter between characters is enjoyable, as well as the side comments that are made, make it more personal. It took awhile, but I loved it when Cole and Lydia resolved to let God into their relationship. Also really liked the support characters.
