An exciting, romantic fantasy romance with viking vibes? I'm in.

I had the privilege of reading this ahead and release day and had an amazing time reading it! This book follows Seraphina, a strong and very capable FMC from years of training with her father to be a fierce hunter/warrior. She has a run in with a rival clan when she's attacked, resulting in her coming across a magical axe (and the guy who wants it for himself - a guy with viking vibes, but also a shadow daddy, might I add). I won't say anything else because I don't want to give anything away!

The writing style of this book feels romantic and appropriate for the universe the characters are in, but super easy to follow! Magic system isn't very complicated either and easy to understand.

I read this book in 2 days and ended up giving it 4 stars! I'm excited to see what E.L. Canney's next project is!

This book has
- feminine rage
- MMC with shadow wielding powers
- Viking vibes
- One bed
- Enemies to lovers
- Training sessions

First and foremost, I began following E. L. Canney on TikTok before I realized she was writing her debut novel. We have similar romantasy tastes and her content is top notch! After she posted about her upcoming book I just knew I needed to read it.

👏🏽👏🏽She did not disappoint!! 👏🏽👏🏽

The FMC is unknowingly powerful , clever and has a strong will to do the right thing. The world development is beautiful and the author takes enough time to develop the world she is creating without it taking over the book which is probably one thing I’m most thankful for.

Our FMC, Seraphina, takes us through the loss of a beloved friend at a young age by an accident that was in my humble opinion not her fault, to a journey of her to living with the Verengarde. Unknown to them she holds the Celestial Axe that just so happened she was bestowed upon by another person and that they are searching for.

I wouldn’t technically classify this as a romantasy it is definitely a fantasy book that has spice scenes but those do not lead the story. I cannot wait to see where this book goes in the next installment!

I received an ARC for an honest review.
Seraphina's journey is of survival and self discovery. She is taken from her village by the Verengarde to live among them and train as them.
Secretly, she trains with the axe of celestial wrath that will only allow her to wield it. Did I mention that the Verengarde are looking for this axe?? The stakes are high in keeping her secret, and she wonders why the general, Kaelan seems to be protecting her.
I love the enemies to lovers and slow burn in this book. The ending had some major twists that I was not expecting!
I can't wait to read the next installments of the series.

I received this ARC for an honest review.

This was the viking fantasy, with some romance, spice, a shadow daddy that I didn’t know I needed. I really enjoyed the world building in this book. Sera is the fierce FMC with red hair. I love a redhead FMC. The writing was immersive, and even poetic at times. Slightly repetitive, but not so repetitive that I grew bored with it. I look forward to seeing what the author has next for the series! Overall this is a great book, especially for a debut novel.

The story is enjoyable once you get into it. My only issue was the writing. I felt like I was doing homework. The wording was a little too much for my enjoyment. Otherwise a decent read

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Oath of Embers is a vast Viking inspired fantasy world, with a strong FMC, clans, a shadow daddy and spice. This is a beautiful, alluring debut novel with a melodic and poetic voice.

"You once asked me what you were made for…you have passion in your soul and thunder in your veins. You were made for treacherous and mystical things."

"Defiant as always, even when staring death in the face."

“If ever there were two souls fated to exist in the same time and realm, it was ours. I will never forget you nor your love and sisterhood. A piece of my heart will always be with you, Sera.”

“I’m going to relish in bathing the blood of your demise.”

"A person without fear is also without hope."

"The journey to unveil one's past is a delicate dance, Seraphina. It requires not only the knowledge of the arcane but also the courage to face the truths that lie buried within. It is a costly endeavor one in a manner of the physical and the spiritual."

"Oh Sera, there is nowhere in this realm or beyond that you could go that I would not find you.”

The writing is captivating and it has clearly been carefully crafted. The author is so skilled at vividly depicting the realms the characters venture to. At times I felt as though I were reading a best-selling author as opposed to a debut novel.

However, the writing at times was repetitive. The author used the term tapestries repetitively and describes how candlelight casts dancings shadows far too often to be overlooked throughout the book. At times the FMC seems to give into that which she's been vehemently opposed to far too easily. Her thoughts seem to only add a very surface level understanding to what's already being conveyed in third person at any given time, adding nothing to the story's overall progression. Occasionally the dialogue would fall a short for me and grew predictable at times.

Overall, I truly believe this book has the potential to be a huge hit comparable to the likes of Fourth Wing and ACOTAR (I've never read it so I could be wrong). But, don't go into this expecting it to be a Romantacy it's more a Fantasy with Romance and Spice, which I wasn't expecting. The spice had unexpected details and really pulled me in. No fade to black or disappointing spice scenes, and I really appreciate that. The MMC calls her is little huntress.

Here's some of my favorite spicy quotes from him:
"The little sound you make right when you cum is music I’ll be playing in my head all damned day."
“If I rest my hand between your thighs, Sera, will I find my dessert for the evening pooling there?”
“Uh, Sera, you better hold still…One slip of my finger on this dress and you’ll receive more than you bargained for entirely.”

Seraphina always sarcastically calls him 'general' and even bites back with saying she's ‘caged in a black fortress of death’. The bickering is high ENTERTAINMENT.

The ending left me dying to read the next book though. I'm so excited to see what else lies ahead in this story.

This story takes you on a journey following a Viking-themed world with a fiery redhead FMC. I enjoyed Sera as a character and thought her strong-willed and feisty. The magic system and world thus far explained left me with unanswered questions, but that is what you get when diving into a fantasy. The romantic relationship was a slow-burn enemy to lovers. Our MMC fell first, and the FMC yearns but never quite gives in to her desires until the ending, which played well at the story's beginning.
I don't know where this series will continue, as it was difficult to follow at the end. I would rate this 3.5 Stars(rounded up on Goodreads) as I liked the overall idea of this world and may continue with the next book.

Overall, I liked the plot of the story, but I feel the characters need a little bit more building on. The block also had a lot of fluffy over descriptive verbage.

I really tried. I really like the concept of the book/story.. The execution wasn't great. The writing style wasn't for me. The story telling was a little all over the place.

Received this book as an ARC and rated it 3,5 stars.

We follow Seraphina, an orphaned huntress raised in a family with other adopted children. Seraphina has a hidden power which involves fire but when something traumatic happens at a young age she vows never to let those powers control her again.

When on a hunt she saves an old man from three Verengarde warriors and in doing so puts a mark on herself. The old man gives her a magical axe that immediately connects with Seraphina's own hidden powers. Not knowing what to do she rushes back to her village only to be hunted down by the Verengarde general Kealan who wants revenge for the three dead warriors and who wants the axe. The axe however doesn't allow anyone else to wield it and so he takes Seraphina and the axe with him back to the Verengarde fortress.
What follows is a year of her training with the Verengarde and trying to find a way to escape both the fortress as well as her budding feelings for Kealan.
As her powers grow and she learns the ways of the Verengarde she finds out there's more to Kealan then meets the eye and they eventually give in. But the story isn't over yet, Seraphina has visions and something is calling out to her. She also finds out something about Kealan that breaks her heart and makes her leave him and the Verengarde in search for answers about who she is and what she is destined for.

I liked the writing style of the author although the descriotions could do with a little less embelishment. It's definitely an enemies to lovers romance, there's found family and the world building is easy to understand which makes it a good story for first time fantasy readers.
I'm eager to find out how the story continues.

The twists and turns in this book had me crying, screaming, and out of breath!

Seraphina was just a lonely hunter up until she was faced with a challenge to save her village from intruders. She may have saved her village but she was stolen and brought to their worst enemy the Verengarde fortress by a shadow man. Little did she know what was in store for her. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Between training for the Verengarde and discovering her powers and how to wield her axe, she is torn between love and hate for their General Kaelen. 🙃

Kaelen and Sera end up spending time together and living up to the enemies-to-lovers trope… until he ultimately betrays her and she must make the decision of her live to leave the Verengarde and Kaelen behind in search of her destiny. 🥰

This book had me in a chokehold, I read whenever I got a chance. The love/hate relationship Kaelen and Seraphina have had me laughing, pissed, and then so excited when it finally happened. 🫶🏻

The plot twist in this book is jaw dropping and will have you questioning what the heck you decided to torture yourself with. 😨

Definitely recommend!! It will leave you wanting more with the cliffy it leaves you on but so worth the ride!

I loved the FMC she's fierce but kind! The world building was great! I was intrigued the entire time. Some parts were a little repetitive but not to the point where I couldn't look past it. I can't wait to see what's next for E.L Canney!

3.5 Star Rounded up
1.5 🌶 Spice Level

I want to give a round of applause to this Author's debuting story! I was thoroughly impressed with the storyline and world created! Seraphina is a wild card character who stands only for herself and what she believes in. Her relentless stubbornness really added to the story and how she is growing as a powerful warrior/huntress. She is the powerful FMC that we needed!

While I believe the story was great, there is always room for improvement. I rounded up to a 4 star because of the story, but kept it at 3.5 due to the writing style and lack of editing to a lot of the novel. It wasn't fully for me. I felt like while the descriptions where high, you could tell the author had favorite words she liked to use: ethereal, trepidation. There were a couple repetitive notions and descriptions used in the story, but nothing too strong as to deter from continuing on in the plot.

I felt like there could have been more character building with Seraphina: her strong bond with Liara seemed to branch from childhood growth, her family bonds were lacking, background of her growth within the village and how she fit in being an adoptive child from outside the village, her practicing her power usage seemed to just show up at one point in the book and nothing really showed her progression of understanding her powers more, brief background of talking with other characters and not getting their full character growth as well. Overall, I thought this book would've done better separated out into two novels: one in her development with understanding her powers and how she was taken away and adjusting to being with the Verengarde and then when the betrayal happened, branching off into the second novel where we see her search of the Sacred Lands and how she grew more as an independent character in her search for understanding her visions and the history of Eirlys.

The connection between Kaelan and Seraphina was done very well! They had such a spark between the two of them; it was enemies to lovers, broken relations, bundle of tension, and old friend relationship! I want more of them! I felt like the additional jealousy with Ivan brought Kaelan closer to Seraphina, but I felt there could have been more jealousy that brought about their spark and I cannot wait to see how their love grows in the coming novel!
I want more! More "Little Huntress" moments and "General" sarcasm!

"The Oath of Embers," the thrilling novel by E.L. Canney, weaves a mesmerizing tapestry of magic, loyalty, and the struggle for identity. Set in a vividly imagined world where elemental forces collide, the story follows Sera a formidable hunter plagued with surviving, friendships, fate, new and old loves and temper that matches her power while uncovering secrets of her past.

Canneys world-building is exceptional, immersing readers in a realm where the stakes are high and the characters are beautifully complex. The main Character's are truly amazing and compelling, making it difficult to put the book down. Seras journey is both heart-wrenching and inspiring, as she grapples with her responsibilities and the conflicting Oaths that bind her.

Dialogue is sharp, and the pacing is brisk, keeping the tension alive throughout. The supporting cast is equally well-crafted, contributing depth to the narrative and adding layers to the conflict that Sera faces. As alliances shift and trust hangs by a thread, the novel captures the essence of friendship and sacrifice in its purest form.

Overall, "The Oath of Embers" is an enthralling read of fantasy and adventure. E.L. Canneyhas crafted, and a stunning story I highly recommended for anyone looking to escape into a world filled with magic, intrigue, and romance. I can't wait for book 2!

Really loved Sera and her evolution throughout this book. I really love it when the FMC is already a bad ass out of the gate. All the training just makes way more sense. After a few chapters I had suspicions about how something major and literally screamed out that I knew it when it was confirmed. I’m really curious to what will be answered in book two. But I really enjoyed this romantasy. I finished it last night and I’ve been thinking about it all day so far. Highly recommend picking it up.

2.5 rounded up, this should have been a dnf but for some reason i felt i needed to see it through idk

if i have to read the phrase “fiery red hair” again in this lifetime it will have been too soon

the way the relationships developed in this book felt very inorganic and the plot, especially the last 100 pages, was just all over the place.
