Homecoming Hearts #4

Steam (Below Zero)

Rate this book
Bad boy movie star Trent Charles is more famous for his outrageous behavior than he is for his acting these days. After one scandal too many, his manager sends him home to the snowy ski slopes of Wyoming to get his life together. No parties, no fast cars, and certainly no women.

Ashby Wilcott is done with bad boys. His heart is broken from his last relationship disaster. A few weeks of peace and quiet in the mountains is just what he needs. He is absolutely not interested in moody Trent Charles, even if he is hot enough to melt snow with his rippling muscles and mysterious ways. Good thing Trent is straight.

But the two men can’t seem to stay apart. Trent finds himself pretending to be Ashby’s boyfriend, a lie that gets Ashby invited to a wedding as Trent’s guest. Regardless of Trent’s protests that he’s not interested in the beautiful Ashby in that way, the chemistry between the two steams up. With only a few weeks together, what harm can they do having a little fun?

As outside forces threaten to tear them apart, Trent realizes Ashby means more to him than just a fling. In fact, he’ll do anything to protect him.

Steam is a hot, standalone gay romance novel with a guaranteed HEA and absolutely no cliffhanger.

3 stars!

So I read this when I was feeling sick so I don’t know if the mediocre read was the book or my sickly self. But anyhow, I guess it didn’t grasp me as much as the earlier books did.

I want to say I like Ashby but he behaved oddly at times. Like telling a flight attendant where he lived. For an internet famous person, I find that odd. But I did like him. I like the part where they explore gender fluidity. It was brief but it felt like a tender moment.

Trent on the other hand seemed very one dimensional. Actually, the author tried to give both of them depth but it didn’t feel like it was done well. It was more tell than show. Or she started to show some depth to the characters but didn’t quite follow through. At least it felt that way to me.

Also, the whole plot line didn’t feel organic. It just felt clunky to me. Which is a shame because the other books in the series were so good. Sigh....

This book has a great beginning. I was drawn right into the story. Ashby was an endearing, sweet guy recovering from a broken heart. Trent is a movie star hiding out for a few months.
Ashby is attracted to the straight guy, slowly they become friends. I enjoyed watching their friendship grow. Both of these men genuinely liking and respecting each other. I love the Britishness (that's a word right??) of Ashby. Slowly Trent starts to think he may not be as straight as he'd first believed.
It was great watching Trent grow and discover more about himself.
These men were able to work through their obstacles together. I enjoyed Trent's friends and although the book worked great as a stand alone, it has made me want to go back to the beginning of the series and read them all.
A heartwarming story I thoroughly enjoyed.

I was gifted my copy of this book, that I write a review was not required.

This is book 4 in the series, but you do not need to have read the others for this one to make sense. They can be all read as stand alones. I have only read one and tow to date.

I LOVED books one and two, but for me, this one did not quite hit the spot that they did.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great read, and I read it in one sitting. My first instinct when starting to write this is 4 stars, and I cannot seem to budge off that! And *insert wailing* I don't know WHY!!

Trent is sent home, to get his act together after punching a photographer. Ashby ran half way across the world to find himself some space after a break up. The two immediately have a connection but Trent is straight, right??

Like I said, it's a great read, some sexy spots, some emotional spots and some cute St Bernard puppy spots. It just....ARGH!!!

I loved Trent, and what he was trying to do with his dad. He understood that Dad was maybe not in the best of places, and Trent hadn't helped that by not coming home sooner. I loved Ashby, and all his little quirks! Loved the Harry Potter response to everyone!

I HATE it when I can't figure out what doesn't work for me, you know I do, but it's really bothering me her more so that usual! I love Ms Welch's work, she writes great stories with believable characters in real life situations. Her characters are quirky and unique, she spins a good, well written, well delivered tale.

Before I go off on a tangent, I'll just say this. You should read these books. They are really excellent, just this one didn't quite hit that spot that Scorch and Spark did.

BUT!!!

4 stars

This is such an enjoyable series and this installment does not disappoint. The story quickly pulled me in and kept me turning the pages wanting to know what was going to happen next. There is a little suspense, a few heart stopping moments, and an adorable puppy, and plenty of love. I can't wait to read what happens next.

I received a copy of this book from the author, my review has been voluntarily submitted.

Trent is a straight famous actor who has had a few scandals in his time. The latest one, where he punches a horrible paparazzi guy, causes his agent to tell him to go off the grid for a few months. He hasn't spoken to his father in years, but it is time to go home and try to get his life together again.

Ashby has just had a horrible break up, and he comes to the US from England to get away and focus on himself. He has no plans to get involved with anyone else, but fate has a way to throw things at you when you least expect it.

Trent and Ashby develop a nice friendship while they are both staying at the same resort. Ashby is definitely attracted to Trent, but him being straight causes Ashby to stay away. Trent struggles with the feelings he is having for Ashby. Partly because of him being male, but also because Trent is a real commitment phobe. These two guys really complemented each other well, and I enjoyed their story.

I received an ARC of this book, but hadn't read any of the first 3 books. This book could be read as a standalone, and not reading the others did not diminish my enjoyment. I am definitely interested in reading the others now, however, because we get to see all 3 couples and I want to know how they got to the happiness they have now.

I have loved this entire series, but I think this one might just edge out Raiden and Levi for my favorite. Trent and Ashby are so wildly different, yet cannot deny the pull between them. After the end of Below Zero, Trent is now a rising action star in Hollywood. But at the beginning of this book he is on a downward spiral, maybe a little misunderstood, and a whole lot lost. He can’t seem to break from his recent patterns, but there is no denying he needs and wants to.. so a three-month vacation back home in Wyoming it is. Ashby is there on holiday after breaking up with his cheating boyfriend and deciding to get out of England for a little while. He is wonderfully sweet and friendly and sparkly, and just a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, he seems to think little of himself thanks to his jerk of an ex.

Trent and Ashby have a bit of a rocky start when they first meet, but I love how their friendship develops. The struggle Trent goes through in terms of his sexuality and the attraction he feels towards Ashby is real and understandable, but I love how (minus a few setbacks) he genuinely wants to learn and open his mind and his heart. I also love how Ashby and Trent bring out the best in each other, and how Trent accepts Ashby as he is and is determined to make him see just how amazing he is. Their relationship is so sweet, and their chemistry is sizzling! The desk?? Um, yeah... HOT!

I enjoyed seeing the other members of the band again, ALL of them this time (yes I’m talking about you, Reyse), and their partners. I love the family-like dynamic between them all. I also liked the resort subplot quite a bit, even if I did want to kick a certain slimy jerk in the jewels. I still do, really...

This book made me laugh, curse out loud (that jerk, ugh), swoon a little (Trent is really sweet when he wants to be), and I might have shed a tear or two. Steam is a well-rounded story that can be read as a standalone, but I really recommend starting at the beginning. Meanwhile, I’ll be here hoping that we get Reyse’s story next...

I loved, loved, loved this book. This is another winner by HJ Welch. The writing is so smooth and dynamic that I was captivated from the start, and it didn’t falter once. The entire book is one rush of joy and pleasure. It is not your usual “gay for you” story but gives a different and refreshing perspective of being queer.
Trent and Ashby are great characters. Unique in their own right and very lovable, and they kept developing throughout the book. They each have their own “voice,” which made them even more realistic. One is American, and one is British, but that is not all. Trent is the more macho man, whereas Ashby has more feminine sides, and he is not shy about it. Meeting Ashby has Trent wondering if he may be not so straight as he thought he was. The why and how don’t matter in the least. They don’t need labels to identify; they are attracted to each other just as they are. And boy, did I feel that attraction. They have so much chemistry. Talking about steam. In and outside the bedroom. Their banter is super funny, and their support for each other, and for others in their surroundings, is endearing and admirable.
The supporting cast enhances the story. Maeve, Darnell, Trent’s father (even if their relationship is difficult). They are all worth mentioning. And I can’t forget the little star, Merlin, the St. Bernard puppy. He is a scoundrel, but oh, so sweet. He brings all of them together in his own mischievous way.
This is the fourth book in the Homecoming Hearts series and can be read as a stand-alone. There are recurring characters from the previous books, so you might want to catch up with them. Not in the least as these books are just as good.

I received an ARC from LesCourt Author Services. This is my honest opinion and review.

I haven't read any of the other books in this series, but I can tell you that I will be reading them now. You don't need to read them, but like with all series, it just makes things better. I really enjoyed reading about Ashby and Trent. Trent needs to get out of town after having an altercation with the press. Ashby had to get away from his life so that he can get over his cheating ex and figure out what he wants to do with himself. They are great characters that mesh really well. Trent needs to stop running from stress in his life and he needs to not let his emotions get away from him. Ashby is tired of being a trust fund kid and would like to find something that he is passionate about.
I would love to go to the Lodge they are the secondary characters are so friendly and fun, except for the owner, but we don't need to worry about him...or do we? Every one is friendly and wants the lodge to succeed, but their hands are tied. They go out of their way to make Ashby feel welcome and not alone. They respect Trent's need to be anonymous and that he needs to work on his relationship with his father. The best thing is how well the guys get along and how open they are with each other. I love the ending.

You should really check out this book and I will be reading the rest of the books in this series.

Romance with lots of heart, a dash of quirky, a sprinkle of humor and plenty of steam to create a perfect recipe for love! Two wonderful MC's and a whole crew of delightful characters that will win your heart and make you want to go visit them. i absolutely fell in love with Ashby and his self awareness and ability to express himself. I also found Trent so authentic and honest. It was awesome to watch them fall in love and celebrate the best in each other.

I love this authors' work because she really takes time and develops characters that touch your heart. i want these men to be my neighbors and friends by the end of the book. In this story we get to fall in love with a whole bunch of wonderfully drawn characters. I loved that we get to connect again with the group of MC's that we have met in the previous books.

This book could be read as a stand-alone, however i think you would enjoy it so much more if you treated yourself to reading the other three books in the Homecoming Hearts series. They are wonderful!

Highly recommend reading this romance because you do find love in the journey. It was not just a destination it was getting there that was so wonderful in this story.

I absolutely loved Ashby and Trent's book. I don't want to say it's the best so far because I loved the other books just as much, but there is something about how both Trent and Ashby changed over the course of the book that had me reading it in one sitting.

This is a very remote chance meeting between the two main protagonists. Trent is a movie star whose life has slowly gone out of control for the past couple years and is ordered, by his manager, to go home to Wyoming and straighten his life out until his next project starts. Ashby is flying to Wyoming because he needs to get away from London after finding his boyfriend cheating on him.

I loved both of these men when I first met them, but as their story develops, there is something special that makes you want the story to never end. Everything about their journey makes you love the two more. I don't want to give any part of the story away, but I truly believe that all romance readers need to read this book.

Steam does live up to its name, but it's how Trent and Ashby fall in love that is completely worth the journey. I truly can't wait to read this one again. And probably the other ones now that I think about it. Steam is Highly Recommended!!

This series just keeps getting better and better with each book. I love Steam and I could not put it down. It is well-written and as always the characters are amazing. Ashby is my new favorite character in the series, he is smart, sweet, funny and beautiful and I love how he is true to himself. Trent is blindsided by his feelings for Ashby and he has to figure out what he wants to do about it. They are a very intriguing couple because of their differences. Trent has always identified as straight and Ashby is the only man he is attracted to. Ashby likes to wear make-up and pretty clothes when he is in a safe place. They have three weeks to figure out their feelings and Trent has to try to fix his relationship with his father as well. I love how Trent doesn't worry too much about how others will feel if he comes out and if it will affect his acting career. This is a hot romance with cute puppies, great secondary characters and two men that want to be seen for themselves instead of their success and money. I loved the ending and I can't wait to read the next book.

Trent, ex boy band member, action star, hiding out in his hometown in Wyoming because he slugged a paparazzi. Going home meant facing his moms death and trying to reconnect with his father.

Ashby, who's English, comes to the broken down resort to heal from a relationship that failed a long time ago. When he meets Trent, he only knows him from the poster he had on his wall from his boy band days. They sort of click in an awkward way. Deciding that being friends works for them.

They become closer and feelings start to develop. Ashby insecure from his failed relationship and Trent surprised and confused about his feelings for a man. A wedding brings them closer yet pushes them further apart. Add a no good resort owner, more paparazzi and a lost puppy to the mix and you have a good love story.

I was sad to come to the end of this one. Ashby and Trent tell a good story together. And I am a sucker for a well done, sexy romance. Can be read as a standalone, but why not enjoy all the other boys too?

I really enjoyed reading this story. It was very well thought out and put together with empathy for all the characters.
We meet Trent Charles, ex-boy band member and now movie star, a grieving son who does not want to go home after cutting himself off from his father for two years following the death of his mother.
Equally his father Trent Charles Sr has isolated himself completely in his own grief and is a shadow of his former self.
Then we have the wonderful Ashby Wilcott, the whirlwind of a colourful character changing like a kaleidoscope from one day to the next and not afraid to show how he really was.
As for awful Kiefer Burton, resort owner full of pure malice and spite. I really wanted someone to punch his lights out!!
And then there is the adorably cute but naughty St Bernard puppy Merlin who ties them all together.

Ashby was definitely my favourite character. He was like a breath of fresh air just because he wasn't afraid to be different both in his appearance and his personality. If he felt like wearing a skirt then he did. It was obvious his gender and dysphoria issues had been very well researched.

It was refreshing to read something different from the usual 'gay for you' stereotyped stories.

Oh what a sweet and spicy story. I really liked the chemistry between Ashby and Trent. It wasn't the immediate tear your clothes off and hump like rabbits, but rather a slow burn that heats you to your core. I thought that the underlying story of finding yourself and know who you are was really well done. Figuring out who you like and what exactly you want your life to look like is hard, sometimes getting lost along the way. It becomes necessary to have someone who will help you pull your head out of your arse, before the path is clear. I was really glad that Ashby finally found someone who would love him for all of who he was, and that Trent found someone who could center him and keep him whole. Together they make an amazing couple, their own ven-diagram.
I read an arc and gave an honest review.

I really couldn’t wait for Trent’s story and it’s didn’t disappoint. Trent has been spiralling out of control for a while now so his manager sends him home to get his act together.
Ashby has decided that to get over his awful ex boyfriend he needs a good holiday some where that he can’t find another man and he can find some peace and quiet.
They from the moment they literally bump into each other sparks fly. Trent can’t seem to forget the beautiful guy in the lobby but he doesn’t really understand why, after all he’s straight!!!
These two just can’t seem stay away from each other which ends in some super hot sexy times but there are some super sweet moments too. My biggest plus point in the whole story was the super sweet puppy called Merlin.

I didn’t like this book as much as the first 3 in the series. I loved the MCs though. They definitely go in my favorite couple shelf. Ashby was absolutely adorable. I would have to say that even though I didn’t love this book, he is probably my favorite character of this series so far.

As much as I loved this couple, there was something lacking in the development of their relationship. I can’t put my finger on it. And then there were a couple of scenes that had me rolling my eyes because they bought to mind something I would see in a Walt Disney movie.

Anyway, I liked how each book has featured a character who also identified as Bi, Pan, Demi or Nonbinary. I can count on this author for a low-angst/fluffy read when I'm slumping. I’m looking forward book 5.

well this book was interesting and educational for me. I am new to the world of M/M for the most part and found that I was educated with terms and explanations of sexuality.

I enjoyed this story and welcomed the change to how the reaction to the tabloids when the relationship was made public.

Trent even though facing changes in his own sexuality for the most part tried to protect Ashby and his feelings/heart.

To see Ashby grow and realize things about himself with the confidence he acquires as his friendships/relationships blossom not only with Trent but the people at the resort.

Steam was so seamless that I fell into a story I couldn’t put down. Being familiar with the stories set universe I can fairly(or perhaps unfairly) say that this is my favourite of the series yet.

Steam had me squealing and laughing and on edge! Invoking all the right emotions a good book should. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the genre. It was thoughtful, informative and just so lovely.

The main pair have taken a place in my literary heart forever.

Darum geht’s:

HJ Welch did it a fantastic job again with Steam the 4th story in her Homecoming Hearts series. Trent and Ashby the main characters journey to their HEA was very heartwarming and enduring. I laughed, cried, and screamed as I was reading the book which in my opinion makes for a very riveting read. I’m hoping there are more books planned for this series.

Another great addition to the HH series. I would say I think it's the best yet but I feel that would be cheating on the rest of the boys from the band. As a previously self confessed devotee of boy bands I can't bring myself to do that. I've said it before but I really enjoy how this series looks at what happens to the members when the band ends.
The thing that makes this series though is the great characters. Trent and Ashley were delightful to read about. They were an opposites attract couple. Both physically and emotionally. Trent is straight, muscled, gruff and buries his emotions deep down. Ashly is openly gay, out, willowy and wears his heart of his shelf much more. They started out as friends and as they became more comfortable with each other and things developed from there. And isn't that how every good relationship should start? Later seeing Trent embrace his feelings for Ashby was adorable. When he gets protective off Ashby it totally made me swoon. But seeing Ashby when he got his fierce on was the best. Don't get on the wrong side of him - he kicks arse!! Love him!

Trent, a former member of a boy band, is now a Hollywood Action Star. He is getting in trouble often though, so he is sent away for a few months. He needs to get ahold of himself and unwind. So he goes back to his home, which happens to be a vacation resort in Wyoming.

A run-down vacation resort, that is.

The same resort that Ashby ends up at after leaving his cheating boyfriend behind in England. Ashby just wants to get away and have a little break from his life.

Trent and Ashby have an attraction between them, despite the fact that they are complete opposites. Trent is the Hollywood Action Star. And he's straight. Ashby is smaller, effeminate and a trust fund socialite. He is sweet and fun, but he lacks confidence right now.

The two have a weird meeting and a rough start. But they do become friends. And it is all very sweet. As their friendship blossoms, Trent struggles with his attraction to Ashby. After all, how can he be attracted to a guy?

The way in which Trent is so very open to his attraction to Ashby is just so very real and honest. Their relationship is sweet, and the sexual side of their relationship is hot!
In one conversation, they discuss how Ashby is non-binary and how Trent is most likely bi-sexual, both of which are in the middle of their respective spectrums. I loved how Trent talks about their middles meeting somewhere along the line.

The former members of Trent's boy band all make appearances. This is the 1st book in the series that I have read, but I am going back to read about the other boys now.

Another character in the book is the resort itself, as well as some of the resort staff. Trent has been on the outs with his dad, who works there, for a while. They will need to actually try to communicate if they want a relationship again.

And, don't forget the bad guy who has it out for Trent.

The characters are well developed. The storyline is well done, with dashes of humor, sweet moments and hot sex. The two characters end up being so perfect for each other. Personally, I loved Ashby. I loved how real he was and how he was able to accept himself.

I definitely enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the past books in the series, as well as any future books in it.

This is the 4th book in the Homecoming Hearts series. This one centers on TJ, the straight, bad boy of the group.

TJ (Trent), has yet another run in with a paparazzi and his manager sends him out of town to get his head straight and to make amends with his father. When he arrives at the run down resort in Wyoming where his father works and his mother died he meets Ashby. Ashby is British and is on holiday in America after a breakup with his boyfriend of two years who cheated on him. He’s trying to get his head together and figure out who he is and what he wants.

The story is sweet and a voyage of discovery. As Trent and Ashby grow closer, and with some help from his former bandmates, Trent takes a chance with Ashby and discovers he’s not as straight as he thought he was.

This book presents a thoughtful and non-preachy examination of gender and sexuality. There’s some great and clear explanations that don’t come across as lectures or as soap box time (which I find a lot of gender related stories seem to do.) I felt like I understood the MCs and that I gained a greater insight into how people look at as well as present gender.

We get the three of the other Below Zero members who have been the subjects of books 1-3, and their partners, in this book as they gather for Blake and Elion’s wedding. The one member of Below Zero left who we have not met, Reyse, makes a brief but strange appearance in this book. Obviously the mysterious 5th member of the band who we have heard only a little about will be the subject of book five.

The requisite bad guys were slime that you just wanted to really see get their comeuppance. They don’t really which is a bit of a bummer but also realistic I guess. There are some story inconsistencies which had me talking back to the book and took my head out of the story as I argued with what was on page but overall it is an enjoyable story that happens to dish out a little education.

What I liked most about this book was the way it described sexuality and gender as being part of a spectrum and that those things aren't always easy to label and define. That is how I feel about it so I could really relate to that aspect. Some parts of the book were predictable, but there was something about the characters and setting that I found to be both quirky and endearing and that made it stand out to me from other books.

This is the 4th book in a series but it was the first one I read and even though there are some overlapping characters from the earlier books that are shown, I felt as if it still worked as a standalone. I read the 3rd book in the series next, which is called Burn, and thought Steam was the better book. Burn wasn't as engaging to me, I didn't care as much about the main couple and it didn't have a wacky cast of characters like Steam does.

In Steam, Trent and Ashby were a unique couple, especially because of Ashby being a cheeky Brit and how he plays with gender and sees himself as nonbinary (he identifies as male but likes to dress in a feminine way and describes that part of his personality as being nonbinary). Trent identified as straight before meeting Ashby. He is a bit more of a stereotypical hunk, especially since he used to be in a boy band, which is what links him with the other guys in this series, and is currently a movie star. Trent is attracted to Ashby's feminine side and that leads to him questioning his sexuality. He doesn't decide all of the sudden that he is gay when he was straight his whole life. I have seen this scenario in other books and don't always find it believable. I thought it worked here since Trent isn't attracted to other guys, just Ashby, and it is the fact that Ashby is so androgynous that really turns him on.

What also made this book work for me was the people at the hotel setting that Trent and Ashby interacted with. I think it added a lot to the story, and I liked how there was a cute dog in it too.

I am unsure if I will be reading the other books in this series since Burn was a disappointment to me but I definitely recommend Steam as a standalone.

This gets 5 stars from me. I’ve been looking forward to getting under Trent’s skin after reading about him in the other books of the series... out of all the band members he seemed the most intriguing. I couldn’t imagine how his character would cope with a MM storyline, and I was not disappointed! The development of the romance between him and Ashby (what a great name) felt genuine, sweet, well done and it all just clicked. It made perfect sense. These are two wonderful characters in their own right that enhance and bring out the best in each other. This was a steamy but heartfelt and addictive story that I couldn’t put down. I don’t want this series to end. I feel like each book in the series gets better and better. Well done and thank you for another great read.

Steam and sweat and a little bit of lace.

This is a hot and sexy continuation of an excellent series. By far the most delicious so far, dipping into androgynous gender blurring love. Helen has treated the reader to a great exploration of interpersonal relationships between couples of the same sex, with a beautifully crafted, touching and vulnerable novel.
The whole concept of gender diversity and same sex attractions is well done. It comes with a sensitive approach to the discovery of TJ's realisation of his nature and attraction to Ashby and the confusing need to rationalise and find an appropriate self identity. A thoroughly enjoyable read and a highly recommend series of novels.

So good!

I’m absolutely in love with this new to me author. The emotions just fall off the pages, it’s like we have a front row seat to the story. And what a sweet story it is. Mild angst kept me engaged and the chemistry between Trent and Ashby is off the charts. Add in sweet puppies, an adorably nosy housekeeper, a heartbroken widower, and you won’t want to put this lovely tale down. This is one series that I would adore seeing in audio format some day. While it is 4th in the series it can easily be read as a standalone, which I did. I loved the characters and writing style so much however that I immediately purchased the first three. I give this charmer a 5 out of 5.
