. What do you get when you cross a dragon with… actually, on second thought, it’s probably best not to cross a dragon. That goes double for crossing his princess!

. Despite the perks of having a dragon, Princess Samantha laments not having a true love, so she sets off alone on a magical quest to find her Prince Charming. Of course, there is an assortment of giants, ogres, dark knights, enchantresses, and the usual hullabaloo in her way. I did mention this is a fairytale, didn’t I?

This book was a very unique story. While the general concept of a princess searching for her one true love may not be unique, the setting, magical creatures, events, and writing style make this book different from many.

Speaking of the writing style: this one was very quirky. Instead of having a POV character or two, we have a narrator who often breaks the fourth wall to tell the reader about something. While I can see why some may like this, it wasn’t my personal favorite style to read. The narrator often goes into rants or vents about different things such as grammar rules (or the lack of certain grammar at the time of the book’s setting) which would take me out of the story. An audiobook of this story would have probably been more amusing with listening to it rather than reading it. As it was, I didn’t care for the narrator. At the beginning, sometimes the characters use “thee”s and “thou”s and the rest of the time they say “oh, come on” and “I know, right?”. It was a little disorienting.

There was a lot of “Easter eggs”, so to speak, of pop culture reference. Some were a funny addition and others a little odd as I don’t think most YA readers would pick up on those parts.

As far as the plot, I liked some elements of it (such as Samantha’s growth and realization about what true love really is), but I also had to push myself to finish this book. I think it was mainly because of the narrator writing style, but I also didn’t enjoy all the killing that happened in this book as it was mostly described as beheadings or slit throats and like it was expected or average to do. It felt a little senseless at times, like it was no big deal.

Figuring out the ratings of this book took me a while because there were some comments/parts I didn’t love, quite a bit of killing/violence, and men leering at Samantha (including when she’s forced to wear a revealing dress). It’s definitely a quirky tale, so I would suggest reading the preview on Amazon to see if it would be your cup of tea.

Princess Samantha is searching for true love, and she seems to have found it with Prince David, until he humiliates her at the grand ball. The heartbroken princess decides to take matters into her own hands, and she sets off on a quest through a magic portal to find true love, expecting that somehow she will find her way back to Prince David. When Prince David discovers that she is gone, he sends his best knight, Sir Zachary, to bring her back. But he's not the only one searching for the missing princess. The royal family has their own dragon, Hubert Firetongue the Incomparable. The dragon teams up with Sir Zachary and they follow Samantha through the magic portal. But when they arrive on the other side of the portal, she is nowhere to be seen. Unbeknownst to any of them, they are all being pursued by a murderous dark knight.

This fairytale is full of humor and adventure and a delightful romance! It reminds me of the Princess Bride with lots of swashbuckling adventure and sword fights and daring heroes. They have to fight off ogres, escape from a dungeon, and free innocent creatures from the evil rule of a despotic baron. They encounter magical unicorns, kind giants, annoying gnomes, and one very slippery enchantress. And best of all, it is hilarious from start to finish! I was literally giggling like a madwoman through most of the story.

I loved the sweet slow-burn romance, especially because it's very clean and their romance is based on more than just physical attraction. It was really lovely to see these two characters gradually beginning to respect and care for each other in deeply meaningful ways. Every romantic moment between them is just so adorable and sweet, but you also get the sense that their relationship is built on something lasting.

Princess Samantha and Sir Zachary both have really excellent character development as they go through their adventures and it teaches them humility and gives them a perspective beyond their own previously narrow experiences. I completely fell in love with Sir Zachary, and I really related to Princess Samantha. They both have very complex personalities, and it was wonderful going on this inward journey of self-discovery with them.

I love all the funny references to other fairy tales, movies, and famous quotes. Princess Samantha complains that Snow already found her Prince Charming, and that other princess was asleep for years and found someone, so why can't Samantha find her true love? During their quest, the group visit a town that they describe as a "hive of scum and villainy". There are tons of witty quips in the dialogue that made me laugh.

I cried at the beautiful ending, because there is this heartwarming family reunion, and it was just so touching to see the parents and children all reunited. I love stories about family togetherness and this poor family had been through such difficult struggles to find each other again. Beautiful!

The best part of this book is the Christian themes that are woven through the story. The characters explore the meaning of self-sacrifice, gratitude, and personal joy. They discover that true love encompasses much more than just romantic love, but that it also includes family love. There are many instances throughout the story of different father figures who sacrifice for their children, just as God sacrificed his Son for us.

Since it is a fairy tale, the knight is obsessed with honor and chivalry, and the other characters sort of roll their eyes at this in the beginning. However, as they begin to see how Sir Zachary actually lives out his moral code and makes honorable decisions no matter the cost to himself, they begin to respect the beliefs and values that he lives to uphold. It's a very powerful and inspiring message!

I love this book so much! I enjoyed it just as much rereading it for the second time.

2025 Update: I also listened to the audiobook and enjoyed it very much! The narrator does a lot of different accents that sounded hilariously bad, but fit in with the comedy of the story. Lots of fun!

This is the fantasy book that I wish they could all be like! The writing was funny, the plot was exciting, the characters were honorable and good (except for the villains of course!) The romance was sweet. Moral lessons were taught and a quest was undertaken. Everything I could want!

3.75 stars | a clean YA fantasy with witty narrating and a harrowing quest | 0/3 spice, 2/3 violence, no trigger warnings that I could think of | nice pacing, semi-engaging plot, and interesting premise

*:・゚✧♡ 𝕝𝕚𝕜𝕖𝕤 *:・゚✧♡

I don't know what I expected from this book, but it was... different from whatever that was.
I'm a fan of the narration style, and the premise that this is just another fairy-tale to add to the shelves, along with Snow White, Cinderella, and the likes of them. Various pop culture references, including to the aforementioned fairytales and, which I found very funny whilst reading, some slightly altered lyrics to "I Will Survive" snuck in and uttered by a character.
The general set up of the book was nice, with Samantha going on a quest for true love and such, but my thoughts on Samantha are mixed, which I'll talk about below.

‧₊˚❀༉‧₊˚. 𝕕𝕚𝕤𝕝𝕚𝕜𝕖𝕤 ‧₊˚❀༉‧₊˚.

Okay, I really only have one thing here: I'm not a huge fan of the gender roles portrayed in this book.
Maybe this is because I've, of the late, been coddled with badass non-princess female-written female main characters, but Samantha feels... over-feminine, if that makes sense?
It's just that, in this very modern book, with it's modern ideals and modern prose, Samantha is still your run-of-the-mill fairytale princess. And while you might be saying, "Well, Abby, isn't that the point?" I think there was a chance to change the narrative of "helpless love-sick damsel in distress princess" from all of those 1950s+ era fairy tales (I'm talking about those cute animated Disney movies, not the actual tales which are much older.)
Samantha is a princess, and I understand that. Samantha wants to find true love; I understand that. But Samantha shouldn't have been a helpless sideline character during fight scenes either.
Again, this is more of a me-thing, and I definitely think I've been spoiled with my FMCs of the late, but this is just something to be taken into account.
Oh, and also the characters are sort of flat; they don't really seem to change much, including Samantha (although she goes from "must complete quest and find true love" to "must complete quest but also help others and not be so self centered" so she does change in that aspect). The characters' drives and morals just don't seem to change, which is annoying and probably a bigger deal for other readers, but it's a minor annoyance for me.
Oh, and finally? The plot got sort of boring at times; not extremely so, but when I got into a reading slump this book was harder to pick back up than others. But I did it, and I definitely enjoyed the second half of this book more than the first!

* ੈ✩‧₊˚ 𝕨𝕣𝕒𝕡-𝕦𝕡 * ੈ✩‧₊˚

All-in-all, I think this book was pretty entertaining and a fun adventure! (and I definitely recommend listening to some instrumental fantasy or something whilst reading, because I did that for the second half of reading this book and it just made the whole thing that much more epic, you know?)
I recommend for those looking for a nice, chill fantasy quest, with fun narration included as well.

Fun, romance and humor! I really enjoyed this story. It had everything I like in a fantasy. Dragons, knight in shining armor and fun side characters.

The giants and the dragons were my favorite parts of the story! I also loved the nod to well-known stories and some movies as well. The quest that the princess started out on turned to much more than she or the reader realized. There were some fun surprises along the way.

Faith and true love were woven throughout the tale. As well as sacrificial love, which is one of my favorite things to read about.

*I will say that some of the violence isn't for the faint of heart. But no language and nothing beyond a kiss for the romance.

Thank you to the author for a complimentary copy. All thoughts are my own.

Quest of the Dragon’s Princess is a thrilling tale of dragons, a princess, a prince, knights, giants, bravery, adventure, and of course true love.
It was hilarious and sweet, and I couldn’t put it down. It was quite sad when the beautiful tale came to an end.
I would definitely recommend to anyone who’s looking for a clean, fairytale with new twists, and a couple laughs here and there.

What a fantastic story! It is full of wit, creativity, adventure, battles, and romance! I loved all the references to other fairy tale stories (including The Princess Bride) as well as veiled references to modern times! They are well placed and add to the narrators telling of the tale. I especially enjoyed the explanation of the word “fine.” :P If you are looking for something engaging, light hearted and funny, look no further than this fairy tale full of dragons, knights, princesses, magic, witches, giants, gnomes, ogres, and more! I definitely recommend for adults and kids alike.

This book was so much fun! And so funny.
I would say the one flaw is that the twists were either predictable or random. It kinda fits with the story but also there were times when I felt like things came out of left field.
All in all though so much fun and I very highly recommend.

I laughed, I cried, I rooted for the good guy to win his honor and the fair maiden. A fun story, written with many plot twists and turns.
A great beginning, a great ending, and a great in between.
I loved reading as a princess, knight, and her dragon went on a quest to find true love.

I enjoyed this fairytale-esque parody of sorts. It has funny banter, and narrator asides (breaking the fourth wall) had me chuckling as well. There was adventure throughout the entire story that kept me engaged but also life lessons; the most important one being the meaning of true love. There were also a few plot twists I didn’t see coming. So overall a good read that resembled an old fashion fairytale with modern day humor (think Robin hood men in tights).

One thing l will say is, I noticed this was marketed for ages 12 and up. While there are some great lessons to be learned and funny action-packed adventures filled with dragons, knights, ogres and giants, there are also some adult themes. There was quite a bit of violence, some detailed whippings, and on page death scenes. Magic was used throughout as well, which seemed fairy tale level at first then it was a little more intense towards the ends. Lastly, mentions of men eyeing a female up and down, mentions of a revealing dress, insinuating inappropriate thoughts when it comes to a female, and the overall idea of a man lusting after said female. Nothing is detailed so I would say it’s a clean read, however they are there nonetheless. So just a heads up should you decide to give to a younger reader.

Loved this book! Recommend for anyone who likes lighthearted tales of dragons, knights, orges, princesses and true love. In a small way this book reminded me of a princess bride. (Note this review not written by Crystal, but by her husband who's on the same account)

I personally loved this book for many reasons.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED that there was no cussing. Thank you for that!!! With the exception of two uses of "wench", which is fitting for the time period, but personally it makes me cringe.
I REALLY enjoyed the quirky narrator style of writing, and especially with all of the "Easter egg" references to other works. I even enjoyed how each chapter ended, as odd as that may seem. Seeing how the story developed, and the relationships among all the characters was so much fun and at times had me beaming with surprise, joy and a lot of "awwww's".
I didn't care for how many times the author referenced the lady's "form" , nor the detailed description of characters' bodies. I don't think I would enjoy having my daughter read certain descriptions as a teen. I would simply use paper to cover those parts up for the time being.
I especially did not care for one character and his treatment/view of women. It made me very uncomfortable, although I understand it was a part of his character building to make the readers hate him.... and oh how I despised this man.
***small spoiler****
At one point near the last quarter of the book, I feel the author took away from Sir Zachary when he commented how he liked seeing Samantha in "that" dress. I feel Sir Zachary would not have said that, because he had such respect for Samantha and cared so much about her virtue and honor. Even though many men would be thinking that, including him, I don't think he would have said it. For me, that one line did not fit properly and took a little something special away from Sir Zachary.
*** end spoiler***

My daughter (hasn't read it yet) told me she absolutely hates the cover (appears to be AI art), and is willing to design a good cover for this book lol!!!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book.... its one that I will reread, which says a LOT because I NEVER reread a book. It is truly one that pulls you into the story, easy to paint in your mind and thoroughly enjoyable .
Please.... make a movie :)

Fun book!

Quest of the Dragon's Princess was a fun book. The author included lots of references to other famous movies and books, and I enjoyed seeing how he incorporated them into his story. Sir Zachary was brave, kind, and chivalrous, and everything a knight should be, while Princess Samantha was courageous and adventurous... if not way too naive concerning Prince WhatsHisBucket--who doesn't deserve me remembering his name.
I had to dock a star because of Samantha's interactions with the prince. It didn't make any sense for her to not even question the prince on how he acted while with her verses what came across in "his" letters--as they were night and day difference--but just brushed it off as him being shy. Or for her to never once thank him for or talk about the daily flowers she received for months. Samantha's "blindness" toward the prince was not appealing. But, overall, it was a fun book.

I believe the best word to describe this book is ‘unexpected’ and not always in a good way. It is such a weird mix of medieval and modern, all thrown together with an omniscient narrator with a penchant for overly-long asides. Seriously, the first few asides were funny, but I was tired of them by the end of the prologue and wondered if I’d be able to make it through the rest of the book! While it started out as a typical fairytale retelling, there were twists I didn’t see coming; not because they were unexpected, but rather because they felt so cringy and forced. I did enjoy the modern references (Gloria Gaynor made me laugh); however, much like the narrator’s snarky asides, they were distracting and did not flow with the rest of the story. Maybe I should amend my first sentence to add ‘excessive’ to the description. There are excessive asides (in both quantity and length), excessive wordiness, moderately excessive descriptions of violence, and definitely excessive plot twists in the second half of the book. Overall, I felt the author was trying too hard and needed an editor who willing to cut the word count in half! The positives are that it is clean and (very mildly) Christian. Content considerations: bloodshed descriptions of the more dramatic variety (slit throats, beatings, etc), multiple instances of men leering, a character is forced to wear a skimpy dress to a banquet, a witch/shapeshifter. 15+

This is a marvelous spoof on fairytales, treasured cultural sayings and raising daughters to believe they are princesses. There isn’t much the author holds sacred, yet his jibes are so accurate, one has to pause and laugh.

The princess, the knight, the dragon are all delightful characters, at once flat and predictable yet quirky and somewhat real in ways that keep one reading. The story has fun twists that teach the characters about the true nature of love and honor, and reveal the real message Lee Watts wants to give.

Status? Beauty? Power? How can these match the sterling love a father has for his children?
What’s funny is how the characters themselves make jokes about fairytales, all while seeking to fulfill their role in such a story. I enjoyed the setting, the frequent comments to the reader, and the progressive unveiling of the true nature of love.

Charming

This is the most charming story I’ve read in years! I don’t know if my favorite character is one of the leads or the narrator. When the narrator breaks the fourth wall to talk to the reader is some of the funniest parts and I found myself anxious for the next time the narrator would rant about something.

The story itself has everything you could want in a fantasy: adventure, true love, and about every fairytale creature there is. I loved the many references to other books, movies and songs and will be doing a re-read to see if I can catch more of them. There are some battles, but nothing gruesome at all. I’d say this is appropriate for 12 and up.

Quest of the Dragon’s Princess is a modern-day classic fairytale combining romance, adventure and humor. I kept seeing it recommended in some of my book review feeds suggested for all kinds of different reasons. I thought, “there’s no way,” but sure enough, this book has so many facets that it really does fit all those suggestions.

What seems like at first glance to be a shallow re-telling of a traditional story, turned out to be far more than what I was expecting. It has real depth.

If you were blessed enough to have a good father (as I did) then this book will make you want to call him and tell him you love him.

Heartwarming and Hilarious

This book is the perfect blend of humor, romance, and action. It repeatedly warmed my heart, tickled my funny bone, and broke my heart but it always put it back together again.

I was only a few chapters in when I told my two besties how much I was enjoying it, so they got it, and we did a buddy read. We loved talking about all the hidden references we found, and it’s packed full of them. I’m guessing there’s more that we didn’t find.

This is one I definitely recommend for all ages!

New Favorite

I read this based on a friend’s recommendation. This is the sweetest, funniest rom-com I think I’ve ever read. I found myself laughing out loud several times and crying my eyes out in three different parts (twice for breaking my heart and the third time out of such joy.) Whenever I need an escape, this is my new “comfort read” like re-watching a favorite movie over and over again.

Great for parents & kids

I chose this book to do as a readaloud for my kids (ages: 8, 11, 13). They loved it so much that we finished it in four days (it usually takes us 2 weeks for a book this size.) We laughed a LOT, and in two parts it was so sad and had us crying so much that we all just held each other in consolation. LOVE THIS BOOK! As an adult I think I enjoyed it more than my kids, as I understood more of the Easter eggs. HIGHLY recommend for all ages!

Perfect for all ages

I originally got this for my teenager. She gobbled it up in two days and insisted I read it. It took me three days and is one of the most delightful books I’ve read in a long time. There’s a wonderfully sweet romance, and several laugh-out-loud moments. The messages about family, forgiveness and what true love really costs are beautiful. This definitely exceeded my expectations.

Absolute Delight!!
This book gave me all the feels. I laughed, cheered, cried, then did it all again and again. It's a perfect blend of adventure, romance, and comedy. Best of all, it's very clean. I kept telling my husband about so many parts that he's started reading it, which is a huge rarity for him. He's about halfway through and is loving it.
