Mario Carli was an Italian poet, novelist, essayist, diplomat, and journalist.
He spent his formative years in Florence, where he met Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in the 1910s, and adhered to Futurism as a member of the so-called pattuglia azzurra trying to create a political extension of Futurism. After fighting in World War I, he engaged in favor of the Arditi, and reached Gabriele D'Annunzio during the latter's political experiment in occupied Fiume in 1919. Carli then supported the militant anti-fascist Arditi del Popolo, created in 1920. He always promoted a radical and more revolutionary version of Fascism, often in conflict with Mussolini's ideas and politics.
Renew or Die! I don’t plot, I dare! I disobey!! I don't give a damn!!!
As slogans go I like them more than those of Paris 68 but they’re terribly lightweight. Youth.. International brotherhood..
Carli condemns the dull ordinary soldier who can't work up enough passion, or who has something to lose. But surely it was such people who, when their loss-aversion got triggered, made the bulk of his movement: an anti-bourgeois movement propped up by the aspiring bourgeois. You can't eat ideas!
It was I suppose a choice to plunge the reader of this book into the middle of the action, with no contextual editing or timeline of events. You just have flashes of observation, criticism, frustration, exhortation. Was it a timeless situation, Fiume 1919? I had to look at Wikipedia to find out. I don't say it was a bad choice at that, but the devil's in the detail.
First hand account of the invasion of Fiume by a member of the Arditi. Very relatable to Veterans as they were treated with contempt by civilians for possessing a courage unimaginable to cowards. Much of this book is highlighting the dedication of the Arditi.
