“There are many accounts of the story—how the Moon stole the Stars from the Desert Sands…“
Twin tales unfold: one of Neoma, the Moon Goddess, and her infamous heart of ice, and one of Staella, the Star Goddess, who must silence herself to survive.
When the Angelic Realm is all but destroyed by the Convergence of Planes, Neoma helms the fight for her people’s survival. But when another world is discovered, coexisting with the ruins of her own, she unlocks powers that would elevate her to godhood—yet all the while struggles with a secret that would shatter everything she has worked for, should the realms find out.
Orphaned in the Convergence, all Staella has ever wanted is family and love—and finds it, or so she believes, when Morathma sweeps her off her feet. He seeks power in this new realm, and Staella follows, becoming a goddess loved for her kindness and splendid songs—and all the while hides a breaking heart, as the man she loves favors power over fidelity.
In a convergence of fate, the Moon and Stars meet, shifting the very gravity of each other’s worlds. Will they find the happiness they’ve yearned for in each other? Or will they be crushed by the might of the Desert Sands?
SD Simper is a bestselling horror author, award-winner of fantasy romance, and understands that the true secret to writing great villains is living with cats. She and her wife share a home with four cats, a Great Dane, and innumerable bookshelves.
If you’re a fan of any Fallen Gods or Sea & Stars book, this is a perfect addition to the lush world Simper’s meticulously built.
This story details the absolutely complicated political and social history of the New Gods and their magical abilities, followers, territories, and relationships to each other. Getting to know these characters and what happens after the Convergence is a crazy ride; full of so much adventure, tragedy, betrayal, coming out, found family (and real family), and it all adds so much to Simper’s other books.
Most notably, unraveling the iconic love story between Neoma & Staella is beautiful and heartwarming and everything in between. How they help each other grow, move on from tragedy/trauma, and learn to love again is my favorite part of the novel, and I’ve reread it several times for them alone sometimes, still swooning and sobbing for them every. single. time.
MSDB is a true hidden gem and anyone who has the chance to read it can then attest to Simper’s talent for world-building.
The moon, the stars, and the desert outside my window because I’m in New Mexico and it is now three am because I could not stop reading this book all day.
I laughed, I cried, it moved me Bob. Stories that span this much time and have this much in them just absolutely do me in. Check back in 2-200 business days when I’ve finally thought about this on a loop enough that actual coherent opinions are done buffering. Until then just. 😭 women
