Bow Street

So True a Love

Rate this book
Danger and passion collide when a plucky young woman becomes embroiled in a Bow Street investigation alongside a handsome officer.

London, 1803

As the daughter of a renowned actress, Verity Travers is a privileged lady of high society —and the last woman one would suspect of working as a private investigator. But after one case nearly costs her everything, she makes the hard decision to hang up her hat and live the uninspiring life of a gentlewoman. However, when she and her dearest friend become victims of a harrowing armed robbery, Verity finds herself swept back into the clandestine world of mystery and crime as she seeks to bring the thief to justice. There’s just one the persistent and dashingly handsome Bow Street Runner Nathaniel Denning, who always seems to cross her path.

Verity is confident she could accomplish her work quickly if only Nathaniel would stay out of her way. While she appreciates his keen mind and quick wit on a case, his interference is muddling her progress—and her heart. Focusing on the task at hand becomes more and more difficult as she constantly bumps into Nathaniel, who is determined to keep her out of danger.

When the two rival investigators learn they are both pursuing the same cunning criminal, they must figure out how to navigate the delicate dance of cooperation amid a backdrop of increasing peril and an irresistible passion that sets their hearts ablaze.

If you love historical romance but would love a little more mystery with a feminist stance...you need to pick So True A Love up as soon as possible!

Verity has sworn off private investigating, but when a friends desperation forces her back into sleuthing...she uncovers eye opening insights and gains a handsome partner in the process.

Nathaniel is a dashing bow street runner with a reputation for chivalry...will his wicked good looks and charm be what Verity needs to push herself to greater possibility within a man's realm?

Joanna Barker is an author who never misses for me in this genre and always produces solid romances and plotlines. So True A Love excels in so many things. I loved all the side plot elements and characters that pushed boundaries and expectations within this genre (spoilers redacted), and really always love when a women excels in a mans sphere of work...especially in a historical setting.

Verity is a woman before her time and Nathaniel is a man who raises her upon a pedestal and never diminishes her shine. I loved the parts where they worked together in tandem. Their sweet chemistry stole the show making this read an easy binge. There might be an inn scene that lives rent free in my mind.

ALL IN ALL SO LOVELY. The perfect mysterious read to segue into fall with. Don't miss it!

As a fan, I love getting everything I could ever want and more in a highly anticipated read. And so did this heroine.

Verity Travers clicked for me from the start in A Heart Worth Stealing. Our independent, impetuous girl with the competence to back it up, she more than deserved a capable, protective, dreamy Bow Street Runner to really see her. Can we please take a moment to realize just how much it means for a Regency heroine that, not only he does not minimize her ambitions, but he goes out of his way to support her aspirations? Now that’s when you really need that fainting couch.

Because Nathaniel Denning. Ugh, just his name conjures up strong, crossed arms and a discerning gaze. The reluctant Bow Street Teen Beat poster boy. So hard to be laser-focused when a worthy foe/worthier ally tests the limits of his self-restraint. It’s always “I love you” and never “You’ll be the death of me.” Also we’re talking a couple not of “the ton” so, reputation, shmeputation, let’s go crazy with the working class forced proximity, I’m so here for it.

Though mystery aspects are very secondary for me, I was even more invested in the twists in this one than in the first book. Getting a female/male investigative duo with blazing chemistry that actually sticks together soothed my Miss Scarlett dissatisfaction wounds. And seeing Verity’s brother, my darling, the inimitable Jack Travers both teasing and expounding wisdom as only he can, was such absolute fun.

From this beloved author I’ve come to expect effortless storytelling, great depth of character, solid historical context, a special brand of banter, swooning chest pangs, and and answer to the question “What’s the most random place for these two to have a scorching first kiss?” and all of the above was beyond delivered.

Thank you to the author and publisher for an ARC copy. This released yesterday September 3rd. Fully support some TBR neglect and treating yourself with this one!

Content notes: Kissing Only. Mention of pre-marital relations and illegitimacy. Mild suspense peril.

"I have no intention of letting you get away, Verity Travers."

Cue the swoon, friends!

Joanna Barker can do no wrong. Every book is lights out amazing and I'm happy to say that the streak of her genius writing continues with So True a Love publishing September 3, 2024.

Bow Street Runner + Private Investigator + forced proximity + swoon worthy sparks = one fantastic book.

Verity was a character I wanted to know more about after meeting her in book 1, A Heart Worth Stealing (highly recommend reading that book!). I was drawn to her because I loved the idea of a female private investigator that had her own way of finding things out and going undetected.

Mix all of that with Nathaniel's determination and grit in seeing a job well done with an honorable outcome...allllllll while trying to keep an eye on Verity with her personality tending to jump in without looking first. This makes for some amazing forced proximity moments with great romantic tension!

Add in the swoon factor that Joanna always brings to her books. The banter, the tension all make this book a 10 in every way!!

If you love historical romance, can handle a dash of suspense and intrigue then I think you would absolutely adore this book!!

Joanna is a constant auto buy author and every book of hers that I read I remember why I'll never need convincing to read her books-they are so, so good!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Content: 2 mentions of intimacy before marriage resulting in pregnancy (all off page, no details), mild violence, romance-kisses only.

"A heart is a fragile thing without trust."

I want a 5-star read, I come to Joanna Barker. It's just science at this point. Her books work for me, and I couldn't be more excited about it.

I've been looking forward to Verity's story since meeting her in "A Heart Worth Stealing", and it did not disappoint! She's so fun to follow, capable and confident and irrepressibly kind. She gets herself into situations that I'd never have the guts to get myself into, and I respect that, lol! And Nathaniel? What a gem he is. It's the whole "I don't need protecting." "I know, but I'm still here for you." dynamic for me, it makes me melt every. time.

So yes, unsurprisingly, I loved this book. The mystery was intriguing, the characters were wonderful, the romance was perfect. 10/10 as always, Ms. Barker.

5 stars from me!

What a great story! I just loved it! This is book 2 in the series. It definitely works as a standalone but there is a little bit of spoilers for book 1 so keep that in mind. In book one we get Jack Travers, in book two it’s his sister Verity Travers. And of course Bow Street Runner Nathaniel Denning. I really loved the relationship between Verity and Nathaniel. They work together on the case well and then the chemistry is great! I also liked learning more about Jack and Verity’s mom. Verity’s friend Elizabeth, was also a great part of the story. I hope we get to see more of her. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and I definitely recommend!

What is it about Bow Street Runners that are so appealing? If Nathaniel represents the ideal, it's the sacrifice, work ethic, clever mind, and hunt for justice. He didn't have a chance at protecting his heart from Verity, falling for the same characteristics in her. They began as rivals of a sort, but there was always respect between them as they seemed to be solving clues in tandem. Once they began working together they were unstoppable, and so was their chemistry! I loved their banter and teasing, the way they challenged and accepted each other. So many great scenes between them!!! The multiple family dynamics we see at play brought depth and character growth, with secrets slowly revealing themselves and relationships healing and shifting into something better. The mystery and suspense held me captive and the pace was perfect for exploring our characters while also pursuing leads and resolving the case in a way I found surprising. Such a satisfying read!

"So True a Love" by Joanna Barker is an incredible Regency romantic suspense novel! This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it will certainly not be my last. This book hooked me from the first page and held me in suspense as I devoured and savored its contents. Ms. Barker’s writing is superb and keeps one invested in the story. I also love her use of humor throughout. The characters feel like real people, and I was so sad that I had to part with Verity and Nathaniel when I closed the last page. Readers will fall in love with Verity with her cleverness and stubborn streak. Her character reminds me of “Enola Holmes.” Nathaniel is just a sweetheart, and readers will fall for this Bow Street Runner nicknamed “Sir Chivalry.” This love story is one of rivals-to-lovers that is done so perfectly. The chemistry between the main characters sizzles off the page. I enjoyed their lively, witty banter. I must not forget their first swoony kiss! The side characters are all so well written and memorable as well. I am glad there is a story about Verity’s brother, Jack. Wily is another favorite. I appreciate that "So True a Love" highlights familial love, especially the love and sacrifices a mother makes for her daughter. I have been looking for more clean, well-written Regency books and I know I have found a winner!

I give this book a PG rating. Some examples of the content are: a character has tried whisky in the past; a character is said to have been born illegitimately and her parents aren’t married; characters drink alcohol; characters are at a tavern where people drink alcohol and are drunk; a man tries to assault a woman; it says someone curses, but the words aren’t actually written; someone else has a child out of wedlock.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

“He smiled crookedly, a slow spread of his lips that made my insides melt like butter in a hot pan. “And I have no intention of letting you get away, Verity Travers.”

Joanna has done it again! She has written another masterpiece that I love with my whole heart!!! Joanna caught the charm and feelings of falling in love perfectly! The romance had my heart doing happy flips!

The mystery, suspense, adventure, banter, chemistry, characters, setting, and scenes were all perfect! Everything was balanced so well and I adored every second of this story.

Verity is adorable! She is unexpected and amazing! She felt like an old friend, and I really felt a part of her story! Nathaniel is a dream! He is chivalrous, intriguing, and he will have you swooning! I love him so soo much! These two are sooo dreamy together, and I loved the pull I could feel between them!

Oh my heart!!! Another fabulous read from author Joanna Barker. This one has characters who are connected to her previous book, A Heart Worth Stealing. You don't have to read that one to enjoy this one, but I will say that they're both fabulous books and well worth reading!!! And aren't the covers of both of them gorgeous?! I love them! The colors and the couples on the covers!

I love the mystery and intrigue throughout this story. I was right there alongside Verity and Nathaniel as they worked their way through all of the obstacles in their paths to solve this whodunnit crime. The book reminded me a lot of the BBC TV series, Miss Scarlet and The Duke. Which is one that my whole family loves! So if you're a fan of that, you're sure to love the dynamics between Verity and Nathaniel! They are charming and delightful and full of surprises!

The sweet romance and chemistry was a great addition woven throughout the mystery and crime aspects of the book. It all balanced out beautifully! And kept me turning the pages as quickly as I could! I had heard great things about this one from other reader friends and I was so excited when I was finally able to pick it up and dive right in. It did not disappoint. And now I have another favorite book from this author...although, they are honestly, all my favorites! She's fabulous!

Grab your own copy and get ready for an adventure throughout the streets and back alleys of London, in grand homes and theaters and police precincts. You'll meet some shady characters, some characters who don't want to be know and some characters who are trying to save their secrets. Don't miss it!

Content: Clean. I love this author's books because I know they will always be clean and ones I can easily recommend to friends and family and whoever I end up chatting books with! There are some moments of mild peril but nothing graphic. Some kisses but nothing further.

I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Y’all, incase you weren’t aware, let me make a very important PSA: @joannabarker can do no wrong. Her books are always (always!) five stars for me. I was lucky enough to win an ARC of So True a Love at @abookish, and a couple of nights ago I figured I’d read a couple of chapters before bed.

Well. A couple of chapters turned into nearly half the book, and a very late night. I flew through it. There’s tension and mystery and delightful banter, with the swooniest of swoony kisses to top it all off. Verity and Nathaniel captured my heart right from the start. Of course, I also loved the cameo by Jack and Ginny from A Heart Worth Stealing. Those two 🥰

This is definitely one to add to your TBR, it’s regency romance at its finest!

Oh how my heart needed this story! It was practically perfect in every possible way. The sweetness, the mystery, the struggle with opening up to love & trust. Verity is a stubbornly smart sweetheart, and Nathaniel Denning is one fine man. 🥰

Joanna Barker is just my favorite. I love her books so much and this newest release was a gem too. I love the combination of historical romance + romantic suspense. There is the perfect air of mystery throughout that leaves you guessing and flipping the pages. Add in a lovely swoony romance and this is the ultimate combination.

I loved Verity! I loved how unique and dynamic she was. How clever and filled with a lot of tenacity to do things on her own and learning to let others in and find that trusting piece she had been missing. And of course I was smitten with Nathaniel. He melted me into a puddle and was protective and brave and wanted to be Verity’s partner. Not once trying to overstep. I loved the way the came together and the tender quiet moments they found along the way.

I enjoyed the side story that worked back into the plot (do I spy maybe a future story???). I loved the close friendships and getting to see Jack and Ginny again too.

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Romance + Suspense
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: low
- Content Warnings: brief gun violence, kidnapping

I was so excited to hear we’d get another bow street book with Verity after how much I loved A Heart Worth Stealing. I adored this story & was hooked from the beginning.

Verity & Nathaniel are everything. The way they’re thrown together… their growth throughout the story… their vulnerability with each other… their chemistry!! Your honor I love them.

Other things I loved:
Witty banter.
Edge of your seat action & suspense.
Swoony kisses.
Travels all over London & the English countryside.
Heart warming family moments.
Amazing friendships.
Visits with favorite characters from book one.

Another gorgeous Joanna Barker book! Can’t wait for what she does next.

Edit: Audio is fantastic! I fell in love with the characters all over again!
Well, Joanna has written another winner again, this time in So True a Love, Nathaniel's and Verity's story. Another seriously amazing, nail-bitingly, edge-of-your-seat regency era mystery with plenty of sizzling romance. Gah! so good!
If you liked Miss Eliza and the Duke tv show, this was way better.
I definitely did not predict any of what was going to happen. The mystery was so well-done and kept me wondering and trying to figure it out (but to no avail) right until the end. So many good plot twists. The banter and tension and relationship between Verity and Nathaniel at the beginning was soo good and also throughout, I loved their teasing and the way they fell so hard for each other. I don't want to give anything away.
Nathaniel is just such a fun character. I adored him in every way. So protective, so sweet!
Verity isn't sure about love, but oh man, does she change her mind when Nathaniel shows her what So True a Love can be!
I keep wondering if your books can get any better, and then guess what? They most certainly do! I am loving these Regency mysteries!
Another favorite for me! I wish I had amnesia so that I could forget it all, and read it and experience it all again for the first time, because it was just soo good. Perfection personified!
My Favorite Parts:
Suspense
Hiding
Nathaniel
Meeting parents
Secrets and mystery
Sketches
One blanket
Small gestures
Forced proximity
Jack and Ginny’s cameo
Everything!

I was so happy when I realized this story was going to be about Verity Travers. I loved her character in A Heart Worth Stealing and was excited to get more!

I loved Verity’s determination and bravery in pursuing her dream in a man’s world. As a private investigator and a woman, she was underestimated time and again, but that didn’t stop her. I loved that Nathaniel saw her passion and loved her for it.

I was hooked immediately by this story and there were so many twists and turns that made it hard to put down. The intense action scenes, fun banter, sweet romance, and appearances from my favorite characters in A Heart Worth Stealing all made for a great read!

“A young lady passed him, eyeing him with unmistakable interest. I could hardly blame her — the man certainly knew how to lean on a wall — but I still glared at her back.”

“My heart is yours, Verity Travers, to do with as you wish… But if you trust me with yours, I will cherish it until the day I die.”

* I am already loving Verity and Nathanial Denning
* So much mystery and intrigue
* Ahh! Having to pretend to be married! It gets me every time
* Oh my gosh please give me a man who knows his feelings. With extra romance on the side

Ahh I am in love with so much about this book! There was just so much delightful giggling, snickering, and swooning to be had.

Verity is so fun! I love how full of life she is and how she speaks her mind. She is kindhearted and determined and funny!

Nathaniel Denning. *swoon* I am simply in love with him. I love how open and honest he is about his feelings and what he wants. Plus the whole scene with his family? Ahh my heart! Love love love.

The teasing and flirting and mystery solving was all just delightful! Plus a little glimpse at Ginny and Jack? What’s not to love!

Something I love about Joanna’s books is lots of things actually 😂 But I especially love that there are serious themes/elements but her characters are always just filled with so much goodness and light and laughter!

Verity Travers learned a few things about investigating from her brother (Jack Travers from A Heart Worth Stealing) so when she and her friend are robbed on the way home from the theater, Verity is ON THE CASE. She runs into (quite literally) Nathaniel Denning, a Bow Street Runner who gets assigned to also be ON THE CASE. And as the kids say: teamwork makes the dream work!

1. (What is the blurb for this thing? "Verity is a privileged lady of high society"? WHAT? She's the natural born daughter of an Earl and an actress who moonlights as a private detective??? The heck?)

2. Another just-kissing first person romance. To contract nicely with the straight erotica. It's like a chaser!

3. I do think I liked this one slightly better than A Heart Worth Stealing if only because Verity is slightly less confined by the world she lives in, and therefore the consideration of her feelings is slightly less reserved-to-the-point-of-boring.

(The whole thing about not wanting to marry was....kind of dumb though, especially since it dissolves like sugar the moment she actually gets into a relationship. Like, the point is that it's not a real point, so....)

4. The mystery was perhaps slightly less flares-in-the-air obvious, but not by much. There are a few flourishes to the thing that at least make it feel slightly less mustache-twirly, but still clearly a prop for the romance.

5. I did like the romance between the leads: Nathaniel is clearly GONE for Verity and his continued support and awareness of her was pretty delightful.

3.5 stars, rounding up since my palette is now cleansed, or something.

OVERALL STAR RATING: 5/5

CLEAN RATING: 5/5

@authorjoannabarker is truly the queen of female characters! Verity Travers is a confident and courageous woman. Quite honestly the star of this novel if you ask me. I just adored her personality. Criminal investigations as a plot for regency romance is so much fun, but when a woman is out there with the men, running after thieves, it’s even more exciting.

When Verity and her closest friends become victims of a robbery, Verity is determined to find the thief. Her friend Elizabeth is beside herself knowing that a secretive letter had been stolen. She explains to Verity that someone finding and reading this letter could absolutely destroy her. Being the good friend that she is, Verity doesn’t question Elizabeth and vows to find and recover the letter for her. I loved the bit of intrigue this left us with as a reader. What on earth could Elizabeth be hiding?

Soon Verity finds that handsome Bow Street Runner, Nathaniel Denning, is working on the same case. They continually cross paths, and their chemistry is simply off the charts. Although they started off with a bit of a rivalry, it doesn’t take long for them to realize they truly do make a great team, both personally and on the case. This was a very exciting page turner with a romance that’ll have you cheering. Full of beautifully descriptive words such as these…

“I did not think I could ever tire of his laugh. It was a kite lifting through the clouds, a glimpse of brighter and better days.”

This can be read as a stand-alone, but I think you’d really enjoy reading A Heart Worth Stealing first.

I loved this book!!!!

The first book I read by Joanna Barker was the first in this series. It was so amazing I went back and read all her books. They are all great, but these are my favorites.

There was suspense, mystery, action and romance. Verify was smart, resourceful, and brave. Nathaniel was kind, supportive, and also brave. I really don't want to give any of the plot away. I just want to say that I enjoyed the characters. They were well developed. The story wouldn't let me put the book down. I highly recommend. This may be read as a standalone, but I also recommend the first in the series.

Oh Verity! I am so glad that Verity got her own book. She is brave, smart, and determined. I found a female private investigator to be very interesting. I loved how at ease and even peaceful Verity felt in Nicholas’ presence from the very beginning.
Nicholas is determined and protective but also willing to work the case with Verity. He is perfectly swoony. Nicholas saw Verity for who she was and totally believed in her. It was very refreshing how easily he shared his thoughts and feelings with Verity, his parents, and even Jack. I loved his sweet parents too.
I loved the action, witty banter, and the sweet romance.
How fun to spend time with Jack and Ginny (from “A Heart Worth Stealing”) as well as Mrs Travers, Grandmama, and even Wiley.

Favorite quote “Every minute I spend with you tests my self-control. It only takes one look, and I’m consumed by my need to kiss you.”

My heart is happy — 🤍Thank you @shadowmountainpub for the arc of So True a Love and the fantastic goodies🤍

Joanna’s books never fail to make me smile and this book had me grinning and swooning over the absolutely wonderful love story.

Nathaniel and Verity had the most amazing chemistry and I was squealing over them from page one. I mean, their banter was top notch, not to mention the kissing 🔥

I loved that Verity was such a strong heroine, but that we also saw her vulnerable side. It made her an even lovelier character.

London, England 1803

Verity Travers has a knack for solving crime, and it’s not an occupation that a young woman such as herself advertises publicly. Verity is a privileged lady of high society, the daughter of a renowned actress. After one case costs her nearly everything, she decides to hang up her investigating life and live the life of a gentlewoman though it is uninteresting to her.

Those of you who have read Joanna Barker’s, A Heart Worth Stealing will probably realize that Verity is Jack Travers' sister. And it seems to solve crime runs in the family!

After she and her friend Elizabeth and her parents are part of a harrowing armed robbery, she finds herself swept back into the world she swore she wouldn’t enter again. Nathaniel Denning, the Bow Street Runner is assigned to the case and they keep bumping into each other despite not wanting to.

I really liked the easy banter between Nathaniel and Verity, even though she has sworn not to marry, she can’t but notice all the good things about, his family, his protective nature towards her, and his willingness to work his case with her. He has this smoldering vibe, but it worked well for me! Nathaniel early on seems to understand who Verity is, and that she is not one to stay still.

To be honest, I like Verity’s story so much more than her brothers, and I wanted to stay in this fictional world of London longer than this story entailed. Recommended!

My gratitude to Netgalley and Shadow Mountain. All opinions expressed are honest and mine.

The love, the mystery, the suspense! I loved this book. I love the way Verity's voice shined through in So True a Love. I felt like I was in her head the entire time, which is a testament to how well Joanna Barker can write.

Nathaniel Denning - such a swoony MMC. Loved how he entered Verity's circle and wanted to solve the mystery before she did. That forced proxmity and continual crossing of paths made the romance piece a delight!
"I think," he said, voice low, "that I am already keeping too many of your secrets to consider sharing any of my own."

Also, learning the back story of the Travers' family and on Jack and Verity's mom was icing on the cake for me. I loved seeing more of the story revealed.

Overall this is a fantastic read. I would categorize this as a sweet and suspenseful romance, with kissing only. Thank you to the author and the publisher for the advance copy of this book. A review was not required.

Oh my gosh, it's so good! The chemistry, the mystery, the romance, the excitement, this story had it all. Nathaniel and Verity are so good together. I loved the relationship between Verity and her mother, and with Elizabeth. I was so enthralled by this book, it was perfect in every way.
