"These Long Shadows is haunting, powerful, beautiful, and most of all, a true testament to the victory that faith and love brings us. This one won't be letting me go for a long while!" ~ Roseanna. M. White, bestselling, Christy Award winning author
How do they rebuild a marriage that wasn’t real in the first place? If you love epic wartime romance with a dash of intrigue, you’ll love this second-chance, marriage-of-convenience love story.
London, 1945: Two years ago, Jonty Ables married Katie Baines to save her and her unborn baby from shame. But now the war is all but over, the baby is gone and they must work out where their shaky marriage fits into lives irrevocably changed by war.
Clinging to the memory of a time before all happiness evaporated, Katie works hard during the day as a seamstress. At night she comes home to a tiny terrace on a bomb-scarred street, crammed with her extended family and their problems. Years of estrangement sit between her and her recently demobilised husband. She’s not even sure she loves him. So why is she so crushed that he calls out another woman’s name in his sleep?
Jonty is determined to honor the vows he made no matter how many ghosts plague him. But with such separate lives, his wife is more of a stranger than ever. When Katie’s friend goes missing, Jonty seizes the opportunity to help her find him just so they have reason to talk. But the war casts long shadows over their efforts, and fighting for their future might just be the hardest battle of them all.
Book 3 of the On Victory's Wings series, These Long Shadows, is easily read as a standalone novel.
Praise for Heart in the Clouds by Jennifer “A sweet and compelling romance that doesn’t shy away from the difficulties of war. Heart in the Clouds is beautifully researched. Perfect for both World War II buffs and for those who simply enjoy a lovely story and characters who feel like friends. Don’t miss this one!” ~ Sarah Sundin, bestselling and Christy Award-winning author of The Sound of Light and Until Leaves Fall in Paris
"Jennifer Mistmorgan soars into the World War fiction scene with a debut that will steal your heart. Characters that are flawed but compelling, a plot that keeps you turning the pages, and writing that will have you coming back for more makes Heart in the Clouds a must-read for historical romance fans!" ~ Roseanna M. White, bestselling and Christy-Award winning author
“An enthralling historical romance set against the backdrop of WWII Britain when the heroic men of RAF Bomber Command took to the skies night after night and courageous women did their part for the cause of victory. From their witty banter to the heartache and hope of their unfolding love in a perilous time, Alec and Maggie's journey is one readers will long remember. Jennifer Mistmorgan's expert research infuses every page in this compelling and inspiring novel. Highly recommended for fans of Sarah Sundin and Kate Breslin.” ~ Amanda Barratt, Christy Award-winning author of The Warsaw Sisters and Within These Walls of Sorrow
Australian author Jennifer Mistmorgan sometimes feels like she was born in the wrong era. So she writes romantic historical fiction set in the 1940s, against the backdrop of WWII and its aftermath. Her romances are always sweet but sometimes gritty, infused with hard-core historical research, gentle faith and foodish flair. She lives in Canberra with her family and a wonky-eared West Highland terrier.
Finally sweet Jonty gets his own story! If you have read the first books in Jennifer Mistmorgan’s WWII series, On Victory’s Wings (and I recommend you do!), you will already like Jonty. And you may be, as I was, predisposed to disliking Katie! But as you read These Long Shadows, you will come to care about Katie, too. But Jonty is truly one of the most kindest, loveable MMC’s I have ever met in a book.
This is a marriage-of-convenience story and as such, can be a little spicy at times, or blunt when referring to Katie’s past. It is, however, always closed door.
The beginning of the book left me a little unclear as to how Jonty and Katie came to know each other, as I didn’t recall them interacting in the previous books, and what had happened between the prologue and Chapter 1, but as the story unfolds you come to understand more of what has happened in their past.
I will admit it took me all the way ’til Chapter 26 before I warmed up to Katie. But there are a couple beautifully-written lines in that chapter that really show her forgiving, loving heart. I would share those quotes but don’t want to give away any spoilers!
The faith aspect in this book is not overt or strong, but it is there as part of the story, and I was grateful for that. I also appreciated the accurate historical details (such as Jonty being short, which tail gunners were). Also, although it was at times hard to read and I’m sure even harder to write, I am thankful to Jennifer Mistmorgan for including the true-to-real-life circumstances of infant loss and infertility.
I would highly recommend reading the first two books in the On Victory’s Wings series first. I enjoyed These Long Shadows more and more as the story unfolded, and was so glad for its sweet, happy ending.

Jonty Ables Wasn’t Supposed to Survive. But He Did. And now what?
The war is over. The baby is gone. The marriage that was never supposed to be real is somehow still standing. But barely. Jonty and Katie don’t know how to be married, let alone how to rebuild something that was never whole to begin with.
Jennifer Mistmorgan writes about people whose hearts are torn up and bruised, people who carry burdens and other who get in their own way—people who look an awful lot like us. These Long Shadows isn’t about love that comes easy; it’s about love that fights to stay. Love that lingers in the quiet spaces, in the broken places, in the shadows of war and loss.
Jonty. I could write a whole review on him alone. He should have died in the war—by all odds, he would have. But God had other plans. And now, standing in the wreckage of everything that was supposed to be, he has to figure out what to do with the life he never expected to have. “Jonty had no idea why God had chosen to allocate him more than his fair share of fortunate escapes and near misses, when plenty of chaps didn’t get any. But the Almighty must have a reason for wanting Jonty to grace the face of this earth. Now … he had to figure out what that reason was.” This is the kind of question that keeps people up at night. It’s not a pretty, polished faith journey—it’s the raw kind, the kind built in the dark when answers don’t come easy.
And Katie? She’s not the warm, soft heroine who instantly melts at the sight of a good man. She is distant. Walled-off. Hurting in ways even she doesn’t fully understand. And she is so real. She’s the kind of character who makes you feel frustrated—until you realize you’re just seeing pieces of yourself in her. When Jonty calls out another woman’s name in his sleep, it shouldn’t matter. She shouldn’t care. Their marriage was never real, after all. And yet, her heart shatters. That moment says more about her than pages of dialogue ever could.
And then there’s Jonty’s simple, unwavering faith: “When God makes a promise, He keeps it, Katie.” He says it because he believes it. Jonty knows beyond any doubt that when everything else crumbles, what else is there to hold onto?
This story is about survival—surviving war, surviving grief, surviving the wreckage of a life that doesn’t look anything like you thought it would. And then, somehow, learning to live in it. Mistmorgan doesn’t give us perfect people. She gives us broken ones who don’t always get it right. But she also gives us hope. The kind that takes its time. The kind that stays. The kind that proves, even in the longest shadows, victory is still possible.
I received a digital ARC of this book from the author and JustRead Publicity Tour. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased review. This is another great read from the On Victory's Wings series set in England during the war. The story is filled with twists I didn't see coming, secrets, betrayal, and death, driving me to continue turning the pages. I couldn't put it down.
The story is well-researched and fits the era depicted. The characters had lots of layers that unfolded as I read. The main characters, Katie and Jonty, endure much during their relationship as husband and wife. I felt the sadness along with them. Jonty had faith, but Katie had lost hers. The spiritual aspect of the story was woven throughout the pages perfectly.
The ending was wonderful. I smiled to see how far Katie and Jonty had come. It was uplifting and inspirational, and I highly recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.
I received an advanced copy of the book from the author, but this is my honest, voluntary review. The war may be over for some people but the aftermath for others will involve some deep healing. This exciting conclusion to a great Trilogy will explore one couple's healing not only from the war but from also another tragedy as well.
A beautifully written, heartfelt story of finding the way through love and loss. Jonty and Katie marry to make the best of a tough situation, never realizing what the future would hold for them. Now a few years later, as WWII is coming to an end, they are trying to find a new path forward. With fascinating historical context and fabulous intrigue, this story captivates as well as entertains. Vivid characters with haunting secrets will keep the reader engaged to the last page. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and heartily recommend it to fans of faith-filled romance.
I received an early copy of this story. A positive review was not required.
“He’d arrived home to a sham marriage and to a family that wasn’t his own.”
Wow! When I was looking at the author of These Long Shadows, Jennifer Mistmorgan, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever read a novel by her before or not. After breathlessly finishing this WWII marriage of convenience novel, I will never forget Mistmorgan’s writing!
I would definitely recommend this book for a mature audience, due to the subject matter. During WWII, as part of the Women’ Auxiliary Air Force, Katie forms enduring friendships with Grace and Maggie that will support her during the hardest times of her life. She also is a victim of a cruel bet that will forever change her life in so many ways. Finding herself pregnant without spousal support, a good male friend, Jonty, proposes marriage to rescue her from scandal. When the baby doesn’t survive, Katie rejects Jonty. Is it even possible for them to pick up now, 2 years later, and rekindle their dying marriage?
Fear, jealousy, divided loyalties, shame, PTSD, and secrets all are a part of the world that Jonty and Katie must personally navigate if they want to save their marriage. I liked seeing how God uses even bad events, or unfair events, in their lives to propel them into different paths than they might otherwise take. I liked seeing how God is willing to use imperfect people, such as Katie’s mother, to give good advice. When Katie’s mom urges her and Jonty to find their own place, Katie is loathe to leave the security her family of origin provides. “But this is my home.” “No, Katie. He is your home.”
I love that Katie and Jonty have some good mutual friends who aren’t afraid to pull them aside individually and encourage them very strongly to keep working on their marriage. As Jonty admits, “I tried once. It didn’t work”… Maggie had something to say! “Did you just say ‘once’?” “…Once won’t cut it! If the nurses in the hospital changed your bandages once, would you have healed? They did it every day for months, and look at you now. Your skin has grown over and around. And yes, you have scars, and sometimes they hurt, but you can move on. Just because the wound is in her heart doesn’t mean she doesn’t need the same loving care.”
A few very surprising twists give the story extra interest. I sure did not see them coming!
I especially found this novel of interest as our own extended family has sent an unborn child to live with Jesus, and the novel highlights just how hard losing a child can be, how life-shattering, for the mother especially.
I received a copy of this book from JustRead Tours. I also bought my own copy. No positive review is required, and all opinions are my own.
Be sure to read the prologue. Also, historical notes are online.
Notable Quotables:
“Just like she couldn’t bear the thought of another child, he couldn’t bear the thought of admitting his failure.”
“When God makes a promise, he keeps it, Katie.”
“You shouldn’t have to pretend. You are perfect the way you are.”
“Happily ever afters are actually a lot of hard work, aren’t they?”
“That man is pure gold. He is good at his heart, you hear me. Good. And being married to a good man can see you through a lot in this life.”
“You don’t need to stay stuck in the sadness of death when you know there’s life beyond it.”
I really enjoyed this marriage of convenience story set during WWII. I loved the characters of Jonty and Katie. I liked how they had to work through their individual grief over losing their baby and learn how to love each other. I loved how Jonty was there for Katie through everything and showed her that good men do exist. I also liked that he was willing to help her search for her friend. I also liked seeing their relationship grow and seeing them open up to each other and be honest with each other. I thought the author was a great storyteller and would love to read her other books. I thought she did a great job of capturing what London would have been like at the end of the war and showed us how people were trying to move on with life. I would recommend this book.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
I think this may be the best book that I’ve read of Jennifer Mistmorgan’s. She absolutely shines in this book! I love the mystery and suspense. Though the book is connected to others written by the author, it can be read as a standalone. This book deals with WWII, pregnancy out of wedlock, loss, grief, a growing love, relearning to trust each other and God. Katie has made a mistake. She believes because of this mistake, God has cursed her. She’s afraid to allow healing and trust. She’s also afraid to abandon the grave. Jonty is scarred both physically and mentally. His nightmares could cost him his marriage. He’s afraid to let go of guilt from his time in the war. Together they must wake up and live for today, not for the past.
“No.” He grinned. “Not even a bucket of cold water can stop me from wanting to kiss you silly on this beach, Katie-my-love.”
This is a beautiful marriage of convenience turned second chance love story!
What a fantastic conclusion to the “On Victory’s Wings” series! It isn’t necessary to read the first two books to appreciate this story. (Although, it does give more meaning to many of the relationships if you have read them. And you won’t regret it. 😉)
I am so happy that Jonty got his own story! He is such a happy, kind, loving man. He is deeply scared by things he endured in the war and when he finally opens up to Katie it is beautiful. Katie is emotional scarred and struggling. Her friends and Jonty really help her work through all of her pain. She finds healing and learns to trust not only Jonty but God too.
The mystery surrounding her missing friend was very intriguing.
The faith aspects are very light.
NOTE: This book has multiple characters that have faced infant loss and even infertility.
This ARC was provided by the author and JustReadTours. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.
Katie was not likeable when we first met her in Jennifer’s debut novel, but her return in this allows character development that captures the reader into her life story as she shares regret for past actions, and works to reconcile who she was with who she has become.
Honest, raw writing about grief, relationships and other deep themes is done sensitively but expertly woven into the characters, without any glimpse of being preached.
Mistmorgan continues to produce mature stories, with depth and richness rare in easy to read romance. She ensures investment in her characters as well as suspense in plot.
The third of Jennifer’s ‘On Victory’s Wings’ trilogy - each being able to be read by themselves - and the third book where you forget there is an author because you are lost in her expert storytelling.
When Katie finds herself pregnant and a young man she knows from work offers marriage, it seems like the answer to everything. But grief at the death of her daughter only weeks after birth leads to separation, war at once the cause and an excuse. As a result, when the end of the war finds them both still alive, it brings with it lots of questions. Can two near-strangers make their 'fake' marriage real, amidst the turmoil of demobilisation, an over-crowded house shared with her family, his post-war struggles, her grief and more?
A touching and inspiring read, though it does deal with some difficult stuff - pregnancy out of wedlock, domestic violence, PTSD, and murder, to mention a few. Despite that, though, the overall tone is hopeful, even if it takes most of the book for that hope to be realised. The ups and downs of Katie and Jonty's growing relationship are alternately beautiful and sad to watch, fortunately tending more towards the former, and the background of post-war Britain among the working class is fascinating. Throw in the mystery of a missing person to solve, not to mention the question as to what Katie's dad is doing when he's not home, and this was an enjoyable read that kept me turning pages. If you're looking for a light read to escape 'real life', this is probably not for you, but if you want something with more depth and feeling true to life, this is great. 4.5 stars.
Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
This is the third book in the “On Victory’s Wings” series. And oh how I wish I had read the first two books before reading this one. These Long Shadows can be read as a standalone, but I believe it would have been much better read in order. That said, I did enjoy this story. There was so much depth and dimension that pulled you in and held you captive. It takes place at the end of World War II. Katie finds herself pregnant without a husband when her friend Jonty proposes to marry her and give her baby a father. The story travels through the ups and downs of a marriage of convenience, dysfunctional families, alcoholic father figures, loss of a child, betrayal… all of these sound quite disheartening, but the story shows how we deal with trials and tribulations, and how we can grow stronger and love more healthy. There are some trigger points throughout this book but I believe they are handled with grace and dignity. There is a beautiful happily ever after ending and a great epilogue. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
As expected, I struggled to put down this book until it was finished! Loved being swept up in this world again with familiar and endearing characters, and it was such a poignant love story as Jonty and Katie struggled to navigate grief and learn to trust one another. It was really touching to see Katie's character growth, and I thought the ending echoed and emphasized that really well. Love this series!
These Long Shadows is the first book I have read by Jennifer Mistmorgan and I am so excited to read more. This is the third book in the series though it can be read as a stand-alone, I am going to go back and read the other two. The stories have overlapping characters. This story was so engaging, and I enjoyed it so much.
The character development was great. Katie had a lot to work through; having gotten pregnant and chosen a marriage of conveniece during WWII, and losing the baby, she has a lot to unpack. I loved going through the process with Katie. She had a lot she was dealing with. Jonty is so loving and caring. He also goes through a lot with the war. I was rooting for him.
The storyline and setting were great. I am always up for a WWII story. I loved getting to dig deeper into the effects of the war. I was completely caught off guard by the ending. Not to give anything away.
The relationship between Jonty and Katie was low spice. As the worked to try and salvage the marriage of convince and see if they could make a real love bloom. This is a great closed-door romance. With some mention of passion and closed-door inneundo.
Jennifer Mistmorgan did a great job intertwining faith throughout. A reminder that God is there, even in the valleys, even in the hard times.
*I received a complimentary copy from the author and voluntarily chose to review it. All opinions are my own.
While I didn’t read the previous books in this series, I’m thinking I may need to go back and read them now, since I found Katie and Jonty’s story to be well written and a powerful one.
When Katie finds herself pregnant and alone, her friend, Jonty, proposes marriage to help her out in her difficult situation. When he comes home from the war, they must figure out how they are going to move forward.
This story was an incredible one that deals with some hard themes, but I thought that the author handled them with grace and had a wonderful message woven throughout the story. While marriage of convenience is a trope I have read several stories in, this book was like any other I’ve read! I highly recommended picking it up.
I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.
Wonderful story of second chances, steadfast love and how God is there and is able to redeem anything. Loved the book and didn’t want to put it down! Loved the mystery and suspense, and how everything came together in the end. Both the main characters have been hurt, and must move forward. They must begin to trust God and allow healing into their lives or they will stay in their lonely broken world of doubts and fears.
Well, I completely lost all my manners today, lol! I was so utterly immersed in this story that I completely lost track of time and reality. It’s truly a remarkable read, filled with themes of faith, forgiveness, redemption, and the profound patience required to trust in God’s timing. If Jonty and Katie's journey doesn’t touch your heart, I’m not sure what will. This story is deeply moving. Jonty is the epitome of patience, kindness, and selflessness. His heart remains pure and full of hope, even when life has been anything but kind to him. At first, I found it difficult to connect with Katie, she seemed cold and distant, unable to fully appreciate the incredible man she had married. But I realize some of that was due to what had happened to her in the past. But as the story unfolds, she gradually comes to realize the true blessing that Jonty is in her life.
When Katie finds herself unexpectedly pregnant and unmarried, her friend Jonty steps in to marry her. He doesn’t expect to live long (his role as a gunner has a short life expectancy) and he believes that a marriage of convenience will help Katie avoid gossip and provide financial support in his absence. What they didn’t foresee, however, was the tragic loss of the baby they married for, which creates a painful rift between them. What began as a marriage of convenience becomes something more complicated when Jonty unexpectedly survives and returns home. He suddenly finds himself in a marriage to a wife he barely knows, who remains cold toward him, and a family that isn’t even his! Despite the tension, Jonty clings to hope that, over time, his wife will open up to him. Deep down, he wants more than just a practical marriage, he dreams of something real, but he’s too afraid to dare hope for it.
As they face the challenges of life together, they must rely on one another in ways they never imagined. With their troubled pasts lingering between them, can they let go of their fears, heal their wounds, and possibly find something deeper than they ever expected?
It's interesting because while Katie is the main character featured on the book, I found myself completely captivated by Jonty and his story. He’s a true hero, with a heart of gold.
This is a closed-door romance with some innuendo related to Katie's past, the relationships of those around her, and discussions of her own marriage.
I'd give this story 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5!
I received a complimentary copy of this book, and this review reflects my honest opinion.
I loved These Long Shadows by Jennifer Mistmorgan, the third book in the On Victory's Wings series. This book focuses on Katie and Jonty, a couple who married for convenience after Katie finds herself pregnant out of wedlock. This book takes place toward the end of WW2, after the Germans have been defeated, but Japan has not. The book begins with a short prologue where Jonty offers to marry Katie, but then skips two years into the future where Jonty is being demobilized and coming back home to Katie, even though at sometime in the past she had had wanted nothing more to do with him. We learn more about the time between his proposal and his homecoming though flashbacks in the story. Along with what happened to him to cause nightmares that have him calling out the name of another woman in his sleep. Katie and Jonty's relationship was definitely on rocky ground and they had a lot to work though, but the reader can tell that Jonty truly loves Katie even though she would prefer to keep him at arms length, or further. Making the relationship even more tricky is Katie's friendship with Jan, a man who has been there for her because he is related to her family's next door neighbor. However, after some suspicious actions, Jan suddenly ends up missing. There's intrigue and mystery, though not really any suspense (not that I was expecting there to be). The book focuses mostly on the relationships between Katie and Jonty, between Katie and her family and friends, between Jonty and his uncle. It's also a book about lives getting back to normal after the war and struggles they faced. I love these relationships and getting to see characters from the previous books with updates on their lives now. And the author added in some interesting twists I didn't see coming. The author did a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life and making me care about them. There were definitely some tears shed and I was rooting for Katie and Jonty to work through their problems and make their marriage work. In case it is a concern to some there are mentions of baby loss, infertility, affairs, and mentions of an attack on a family by the Nazis. I received an e-copy of this book as a member of the launch team and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.
I enjoyed reading These Long Shadows, the third book in Jennifer Mistmorgan’s On Victory’s Wings WW2 historical romance series set in England. Katie is living with her parents and younger siblings in London while her husband, Jonty, is away fighting the war. Their marriage is in trouble. Jonty leaves the military and goes to London to save their marriage.
Jonty is originally from Edinburgh, Scotland. He’s self conscious about the prominent scars on his face and body from his near death war experience. He’s also dealing with past trauma that haunts his dreams.
Katie and Jonty’s marriage, two years earlier, took place when she was pregnant with another man’s child. She was only nineteen and working for RAF on an English airforce base when an unscrupulous airman took advantage of her naivety and left her to deal with the consequences. Jonty was her honourable friend who stepped up and offered her a marriage of convenience. Sadly, their baby girl passed away, and a grief-stricken Katie rejected Jonty.
I loved seeing Jonty and Katie’s sweet and heartwarming romance develop as they were forced to deal with many challenges and obstacles, including living with her family. Katie and Jonty both have complicated family relationships to negotiate, including family members struggling with alcoholism. Katie works for a French seamstress in Mayfair. She finds solace in sewing and recycling scarce fabric into beautiful items of clothing.
I wanted to see Jonty and Katie deal with their emotional baggage and work through various issues on their journey to happily-ever-after. Grief is hard, and that aspect of the story is handled with sensitivity and care.
I appreciated how the intriguing mystery story threads played out and kept me guessing until the satisfying story ending. I recommend These Long Shadows to historical romance readers who like marriage of convenience and second chances WW2 romances with unrequited love and relevant faith elements in the story.
There is so much emphasis that is put on the horrors of World War II that oftentimes the aftermath is an afterthought while it was just as tragic. Lives that have been upended try to come back together in fragmented pieces, and those bits have been reshaped due to what they’ve endured during the war. Not a single person came out of that war unscathed, and These Long Shadows shows the hard road to recovery as the war is winding down with its own unique complications.
Though it had a slower start for me, once I was hooked, I was transfixed. There is a lot of unspoken pain within these pages, almost like everyone is mindlessly going through the motions of life until they figure out where they fit or what they need to do. I can only imagine how lost you’d feel after years of fighting an all-consuming war.
I enjoyed the little mysteries that are nestled in the middle of the book, which adds more layers of intrigue to an already compelling story. I loved how organic it all felt. This world and these characters felt alive to me. The descriptive writing and world building are impeccable. When I read that the author experienced the loss of a child herself, that is when it became clear to me as to why it felt so real…because in a manner of speaking, it was.
The time after the war ends had one of my favorite moments, showing a glimpse of the euphoria that must’ve been felt when the war was finally over. That feeling must’ve been palpable, like the world could breathe after years of holding it in, and this moment at the beach highlighted this beautifully.
An exceptional story with the happiest of endings, These Long Shadows is another viewpoint that shows another facet of a tumultuous time in history exquisitely.
*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.
Historical Romance is a genre that always interest me. These Long Shadows by Jennifer Mistmorgan is the latest book in this genre that I have read. It is Book 3 in the On Victory Wings series. I haven't read the first 2 books in the series yet, but I wasn't lost while reading this book.
I started reading and could not put the book down. The storyline was very intriguing from the first few pages. The setting is London, England in 1945. World War II has ended and lives have been changed. The 2 main characters in this book are Katie Baines and Jonty Ables. They have been married for 2 years now and they realize their marriage doesn't have a much love in it. Jonty and Katie married as he didn't want her to be "shamed" for having a baby before marriage, as Katie was pregnant without being married. The baby tragically passed away and Katie has been grieving for the 2 yrs they have been married. Jonty survived serving during Wartime and really has hopes for a wonderful marriage with Katie and wants to work things out. Katie is a seamstress and is very tired when the day is done and doesn't have time to invest in her marriage. Jonty is an outstanding man who has a heart for everyone and his faithfulness to Katie through all her struggles show this in him. Katie really struggles with grief and wants to LOVE Jonty. I LOVE how they both lean onto God and ask for his guidance in making this marriage be how he designed marriage to be. Katie and Jonty went from a Marriage of Convenience to growing and thriving in God's plan for their lives. There were many twists and turns in this storyline, but the ending was so very sweet. The book is one of Marriage of Convenience, Second Chances, Faith and Family. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Romance. WONDERFUL BOOK!
I loved this book so much!!!!! Seriously, once I started this book I did not want to put it down. Even when I wasn't reading it I was thinking about that characters, which is always a sign of a really good book. This was my first time reading a book by Jennifer Mistmorgan, though she's long been on my TBR list. I can't believe what I've been missing out on not reading her books soon! Even though this is book number 3 in the series you can easily read it as a standalone without feeling lost at all. That being said, after reading it I'm totally adding the preceding books into my reading rotation. I really loved the romance between Jonty and Katie, especially the marriage of convenience trope and how well the author handled it. Jonty is such a sweet hero, loving Katie so well even as he faces his own struggles. I empathized with Katie and her grief throughout the book. I appreciate how the author portrayed both characters and their struggles without having it veer into either character being a victim or unlikable in their actions towards the other. The setting of this book was perfectly done. I felt like I was in England just after victory had been declared over Germany. The descriptions of the places and clothes were done so well you couldn't help but feel like you were stepping into that time period while reading it. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's one that will stay with me long after turning the last page. If you enjoy historical romance in the vein of Sarah Sundin do yourself a favor and check out this author! *I read an early ARC copy of the book from the author/publisher. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Sobbed at multiple points, but I really enjoyed this, despite what that statement might indicate!
The only problem? The ending felt a little rushed. I feel like after all that emotional separation and all the big things that were revealed right at the end, we needed more time to just ... breathe. And enjoy a bit of the relationship.
I'm going to have to go back and read the first two books, too. I read this because the plot appealed to me most of the three books in this series, and it did totally read as a standalone, but I got attached to the minor characters (who are already married/getting married by this point, of course).
Note: this is a more mature Christian romance, which is 100% what I want, but if you are looking for something more fluffy, with no longing or grief or hard topics, this is not for you. Child loss is a big part of this storyline, as well as some tough war topics and a terrible home life situation for the heroine, as well as a woman whose view of sex has been greatly effected by sin (nonconsensual sex, in that she lacked information to make an intelligent decision/was lied to about the consequences, meaning safety and sex are not compatible in her mind) - meaning marital intimacy does not come naturally! This kind of book is so needed, and I ADORED it, but just know what you're getting into. (Basically, this is the perfect story in my books, but I acknowledge it's not everyone's cuppa!)
These Long Shadows On Victory's Wings #3 By Jennifer Mistmorgan
Katie Baines made a mistake, but her friend Jonty Ables offered to rescue her with an offer of marriage. For Katie, it hid her pregnancy and offered her baby legitimacy. For Jonty, Katie wasn't sure what it offered him. But war was gripping the world, and she accepted the help he offered.
Two years later, the war in Europe was over, but Katie and Jonty are now facing a marriage that Katie views as being built on a lie. With her baby dead, Katie has not yet healed from loss, and Jonty is left unsure how to help her.
These Long Shadows finds Katie and Jonty trying to understand who they are now that the war has ended. But shadows from the past have scarred them both. How do you determine who you are, not only as a person, but as the other half of a married couple. Amid a country rebuilding, Jonty and Katie must do the same - rebuild their lives and their marriage starting with the foundation. Some things are worth fighting for. This is a story of the heart and well worth reading. Though part of a series, this book can easily be read and enjoyed as a standalone title. Perfect for fans of WW2 fiction, second chances, romance, and intrigue.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own
There is so much emotion and intrigue. What's going on and what went on before-those pesky secrets no one wants to share? What's happening with her family, his family? Will these two ever learn how to love each other?
It's clear that he loves her, but he doesn't really know how to love her. Doesn't know what she needs. She doesn't even know what she needs because grief has a strangle hold on her.
There are plenty of questions, and the books slowly unfolds their world until you've got a solid grasp of what life was not only like for this couple but for many people trying to put their lives back together after the war.
I loved the development of this book, and the hard issues covered with grace and love.
Content warning: talks about infant loss, parental abuse, and while technically clean, it is sometimes a bit too blunt for my tastes. This book quite rightly and naturally discusses the issues arising between a couple when one of them is afraid to get pregnant again. So, while Jennifer writes a closed-door book, I would suggest the reader be either married or at least comfortable with the topic.
Love, love, love. A beautiful end to this brilliant trilogy. Katie appeared in the first story as a difficulty in Maggie's romance with Alec, and her difficult situation of unwanted pregnancy started in book one. So too, Jonty's story of his dreadful injuries in an aircraft crash, and his selfless and loving offer to marry Katie, though not the father of her baby. We open in book three, and number of years later. Katie's baby died after a few weeks, her grief has driven Jonty away. But Jonty has returned, tentative and hopeful that Katie will allow him back. Jennifer Mistmorgan has cleverly woven a story of trust and new beginnings from the literal ashes of World War 2. Her research and description of London following VE day brings you there, and there are many little bits of information which were an education. For example, the making of underwear from parachutes and silk maps, left over from the war. I have really appreciated this trilogy and highly recommend it. I received an ARC copy of this novel from the author, but the opinions are my own.
Last year, when I read Heart in the Clouds, the first book in Jennifer’s On Victory’s Wing series; I fell in love with the series and the characters. These Long Shadows takes place as WWII comes to an end and follows on the story of Jonty and Katie. It’s a tender story of second chance/marriage-of-convenience, wonderfully and sensitively written. There’s plenty of intrigue and drama to keep the story going at a great pace, whilst also creating beautiful character arcs of growth and depth. I love Katie and Jonty’s story and I’m sure you will, too.
A wonderful 3rd book to On Victory's Wings series. I had the joy of being an advanced copy reader and it was a delight being back with the characters of the first two books. This is a gentle story of hearts hurt by mistakes, loss, betrayal, forgiveness, and the sometimes tricky road to love. Set against the backdrop of Victory in Europe These Long Shadows is a story that will draw you in and keep you wondering until the last page.
This is a book I could not put down! Many faceted, unforgettable characters, painful pasts and present turmoil, but throughout the entire story, hope was felt, bright futures peeked over the horizon and God’s faithfulness reigned supreme. Everyone who opens these pages will be enthralled as Katie, Jonty, Maggie, Lucy and so many others stir deeply held emotions, eliciting that same hope for a future of promise and fulfillment!
This series of the books follows the lives of several who served during WWII. This third book in the series brings them all together again and updates is on their lives. I love this type of series where you already know all the characters, you just learn more about them in each book. The author did a great job with each detail and description. She brought out their personality and history so you could understand their actions. Excellent book!
