Rate this book
For years the head of the KGB forces based in the post-apocalyptic United States, Colonel Killov, has taken a submissive role to President Zhabnov and his leadership over North America. Now, having survived several assassination attempts ordered by Zhabnov, Colonel Killov finally pushes his own evil gambit into action. Colonel Killov decides to put his massive attack plan against the American-based Red Army in motion and unseat Zhabnov from power. Thus controlling North America and eyeing control of the Soviet Empire and subsequently the entire world. While this Soviet coup will pit the occupation forces against one another, it does not bring cheers to Ted Rockson and the rebel forces. For the President of the Re-United States has been captured and sits in the hands of Zhabnov and at the mercy of his Mindbreaker torture machine. A machine that will extract every rebel secret and base location and thus mean the end of the American rebellion and freedom.

The Ultimate American, Ted Rockson learns that his woman, and her father, the President of the new America have been captured by the Reds and are being held in Washinton D.C., the Communist capital. There they will subject them to the mindbenders. Machines that make you talk and then go brain-dead. Rockson assembles a crack team and sets out to free the two from the red menace.

This book has some of the best characters I have read in a post apocalypse book. When Rockson and his team are on the way to free the President, they see dozens of people and things parachuting to earth. Those things are a group of commandos from Australia with their camels. Their dialogue is funny as hell, and they were a nice change from your "Road Warrior" types that populate these books.

Also, the free-fighters ride the rails in the Siler Bullet train across country. They first had to take it over from the commies, but that was just the beginning of their ordeal. I hope at some point they bring back the Aussies. Really good read.

i got the entire series via graphic audio and have been listening through this summer. i've absolutely loved it, it's exactly what i want from this kind of thing. the whole series (so far) has been just a great pulpy b-movie-esque apocalypse ride and that's my favorite thing ever.

with that said...i'm not sure i've ever been this annoyed by a book.

after all this time, after everything that's happened, after everything killov has done...rock just leaves it up to CHANCE that he dies? it was entirely out of character and made no sense at all. if you don't want killov to die, don't put him in a situation where rock is standing over him with a loaded gun. nothing in the course of this series says rock would do anything except shoot him on the spot. it made absolutely no sense and it's going to bug me for a long time.

This would have been the worst of the series but was redeemed by the delightful destruction of a one-shot character by the critter of the day. Rock continues his undying love for Kim while nailing everything remotely human across the apocalyptic landscape of post-nuke America. Good, nostalgic trash.
