Il fatto che io di questo manga legga un volume all'anno non aiuta molto la mia memoria... ogni volta che mi approccio all'ultimo volume devo sempre rileggere i due precedenti BUT STILL!!! Dopo anni sono ancora interessata io devo sapere come va a finire tutta sta roba

This series has been reccomended to me many, many times, particularly after I finished (and loved) MADK. I have to admit I have been intrigued for a while, but the chibi art style put me off. I finally pushed through that initial disdain, and churned through the extant series in a weekend.

This series is so difficult to discuss. I honestly don't know if I will—or even can—continue with it when the next volume comes out in what, a year?

First, what I like:
*I love the contrast of the art style with the shocking violence and body-horror elements of the series. The abyss is fucking dangerous, and the author pulls no punches while keeping the art style both consistent and evocative. The contrast of content and style serves as powerful emphasis for hoe dire survival is, and how in over their heads the protagonists are.
*I love the scenery and creature design. The abyss feels alien yet grounded, and the designs are novel and interesting.
*I love that food, water, shelter, etc. are consistently a concern. Again, for all the fantastical setting, there's a lot that is grounded. Unclean water produces dysentary, food is lacking, etc.

Then for the dislike: Pedo Bait
I can understand that in a gritty survival story, characters may be naked. I can undedrstand that pre-pubescent characters, on the cusp of physical maturity, can have nudity as part of exposition for their changing bodies. (Yes, I too saw Blue Lagoon.)

However, there is so much nudity, and explicitly sexualized nudity, of explicitly child characters, that I am uncomfortable. Why is the punishment for misbehavior to be tied up and publicly displayed naked? Why does this have to be shown on-page? Why is the position a sexual one, with the bindings straight out of a shibari FetLife post? Why are child characters displayed completely naked, with careful attention to budding breasts and nipples, in chapter, title, and splash art, which isn't part of the story whatsoever? When you add the other psuedo-sexual elements (e.g., Mitty becoming a one-eyed monster with a head nearly identical to a penis head, the plethora of tentacles, the emphasis on a little's girls dream to be bred), it starts to feel like the author's fetish is slipping in more and more.

I'm no prude. I have a monsterfucking shelf for heaven's sake. But I draw the line at sexualizing children, real or imagined, because I refuse to normalize that shit. Ruined what could have been absolutely amazing.

P.S. Please check Akihito Tsukushi's hard drive. I'm begging you.

maybe it's been too long since I read the first twelve volumes, but this one hit differently. it was less engaging as the previous ones simply because it was mostly over the top fighting and I felt like nothing was gained or learned here.

OMFG.

Story aside, bit bummed out with the empty pages? Normally we get lots of bonus info like cooking and relic details but seems a bit lacking this time.

(sadly there is still the inevitable "questionable" art page....)

Best volume I’ve read since Volume 6. The cliffhanger is KILLING ME. I immediately went to go read the next chapter online for free. It’s five in the morning, SEND HELP.

I’m fully invested in this series because I need to know what awaits Riko and her friends at the bottom of the abyss. Will they get there? Is her mother still alive? Where did Reg come from? These are questions that have yet to be answered.

Most of this volume is the characters chatting as they walk but there’s a monster fight that’s truly epic. The art is exceptional as always, though there are a lot of darker panels that were hard to make out.

My reaction to the ending:
