Look no further if you're after a gripping psychological horror filled with disturbingly vivid imagery!
Maria is helplessly in love with Dominic, who appears quite detached from her attempts to resolve their issues. Dominic has been consistently cheating on Maria since the start of their relationship, but she cannot see past how perfect things used to seem.
A glimmer of hope flickers in Maria's heart as they embark on a weekend getaway to the countryside, where they first professed their undying love for each other. But instead of rekindling their once passionate connection, what unfolds is a chilling descent into a world of darkness, despair, and unbridled chaos.
Sins of the Wronged is a nasty, twisted and unsettling psychological horror novella with scenes of sexual violence... You have been warned!
Daniel has been obsessed with horror since childhood and is particularly interested in the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Charles L Grant, H.P. Lovecraft, and M.R. James.
With his spine-chilling debut, Obsession, in 2022, Daniel marked his entry into the world of horror literature. The resounding acclaim for his unique brand of horror quickly fuelled his creative drive, leading to the release of PACT, See You Later, RED, and Sins of the Wronged.
Daniel has been commended on his ability to transform the ordinary into the monstrous. While he has primarily delved into psychological horror with Obsession, PACT, and RED, his true passion lies in the world of supernatural horror, as seen in See You Later. This genre will be the key focus of his future works, and Daniel promises many more spine-tingling tales to come.
The Sins of the Wronged... Could Lead Straight to Hell
SINS OF THE WRONGED by Daniel Lorn
No spoilers. 5 stars. I wavered between 4 and 5 stars on this story because most of the time, I had no idea what was going on until...
As a storm raged...
Carmilla and Maria sat hand-in-hand in the rain. Carmilla was Maria's first lover. Maria enabled Carmilla to forget her demons while they were together...
Until the storm passed...
This would be their final night together. Tomorrow, they would go their separate ways. Everyone always left Carmilla...
Carmilla almost told Maria her secret on that stormy night, but she didn't want to destroy her with the truth...
Eventually...
The two women met again over a self-serving, hedonistic man at a secluded lakeside cabin...
The sins of the wronged could lead straight to hell...
That is about all I can say without giving away spoilers. I've read all of this author's books and loved every one of them. This story was very different from his previous novellas.
I rated it 5 stars instead of 4 because it was filled with imagery, sometimes beautiful and sometimes ugly, which made this story work. It was like reading a story while on hallucinogenic drugs, and that's not easy to do effectively on paper.
This author's novellas would make a great collection. His novellas OBSESSION, RED, and SEE YOU LATER are also excellent stories.
Thanks to the author for sending through an advance copy. Hopefully, I am the first to say that Sins of the Wronged is just ridiculously good psychological horror. I have read a few other stories by Mr Lorn, and I am becoming quite a fan. I have told many of my friends about his work, but this one takes things to a whole new level. Mind melting, essential reading.
Thank you to Daniel for sending me an ARC of Sins of the Wronged!
After reading the author's books Obsession and Red, I knew I just had to get my hands on an ARC copy of this! And I'm glad I did!
Once again, I have to applaud Daniel for his amazing talent at creating such compelling and sinister books that never fail to terrify me in more ways than one, and his skill for conjuring up characters with such darkness lurking inside them. Their evil desires, horrifying actions that you would never have thought of, and the terrifying consequences after, stay with you for days.
I’m not going to give you any details about what’s going on in this gem of a book- because you really need to experience the whole storyline head on.
What I will tell you is that this novel is beautifully written, there’s not one plot hole and although it’s a 5 star read - you’ll be left saying ‘HOLY FUCK’! It has a Hellbound Heart (Clive Barker) feel to it as well, which I just love. Very dark and cerebral.
Do yourself a favor and read this book! It’s currently available on Kindle Unlimited.
Since reading Red last year, I have been looking forward to this one and thank you to the author for my very first ARC!
Sins is another high quality written horror story which I couldnt put down. The web the author weaved had me thinking supernatural horror one minute, and psychological horror the next.
The plot's ambiguities in this psychological horror story are intense right to the very last line. Daniel Lorn provides a novella of revenge, abuse, toxic masculinity, and female self-determination. This is a deep dive into a woman's traumatized mind, a woman who has been, yes you guessed it... she's been wronged. In several major ways. This is not an extreme horror story though: yes, there's a scene of gore and carnage; sure, there's some sex-fueled mischief (not to mention the abuse); and there's the issue of revenge against predators; but all these cases are structurally woven into what makes the story work, and that's not the display of extremely horrifying situations - it's the fictional articulation of a woman's reaction to her manipulation (manipulation of all kinds, physical, sexual, mental, psychological) by her male partner, as perceived by the woman herself. Why talk of ambiguities, then? Well, this woman's not just wronged; she's also damaged, confused, depressed, lost. Her reactions are hardly typical of what you'd expect in real life, and that's what makes this a Daniel Lorn story. I think it's wise to avoid calling her by name, since ultimately it's up to the reader to decide whom I mean. Riddling out whose voice should narrate this story, who is the tale's real star, was part of the fun for me. Recommended!
This is the first time reading work by this author. I liked the storyline, I can admit I was lost. I hate that about some stories. I was too busy solving the case and not paying attention. I do know Dominic had me PO'd. This is a story that will have you questioning everything.
As always, you never know what to expect from a Daniel Lorn book. Horrors? Sure. But the thing is he writes about them with an eye towards the unknowing and leaves you breathlessly wondering the actual meaning behind the terror.
This savage novella is about the worst of men and the women they have wronged. It's about the toxicity of these men as it is about the lengths women will go to get a measure of revenge while suffering the psychological damage caused by their abusers.
And, like his other works, you'll be left at the end with your own thoughts on what exactly took place. And this pondering is just as good as the narrative itself, a clawing hook which refuses to unlatch itself from your mind.
The kills in this novella are gruesome and horrifying but the WHY is equally disturbing. And the psychological aspects are the kind you'll have an opinion about. This is the kind of book which engages the reader's imagination without the need to come to a definitive conclusion.
It's brutal and compelling and I highly recommend it.
Thank you to the author for the ARC. This review is voluntary and is my own personal opinion.
This book kept my attention until the last page. I loved the introduction and evolution of the characters, especially since it’s a shorter novel. Be warned that there is content regarding sexual assault and sexual violence.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
3.5 rounded up because just damn does this have some intensity to it, even for those already familiar with the authors other works. This is an unrelenting and harrowing experience that in some ways reminded me of the film Talk To Me with its flashes of imagery in an otherwise real world setting.
Daniel Lorn has a gift for the uncomfortable that makes his work like the horror equivalent of The Office, and it's a talent that serves him well here. I think See You Later and Red are perhaps easier to recommend, but for fans hungry for more this is certainly worth checking out and once again leaves me nervous and excited to see what this author comes up with next!
The imagery is what always sells me when this author communicates the scene or emotion the characters feel.
This book in particular might be my favourite of this author. The information flowed in a way that kept my eyes on the paper to reveal more about the story. Each character introduced always threw me for a whim and I was constantly on my toes trying to detect what would happen or what will. Always getting shocked or stunned with the twists and turns.
Definitely deserves more recognition than they have. 👏👏👏👏
Maria wanted to save what was left of her broken relationship with Dominic, despite his cruelty. Their trip to the cabins was supposed to be a chance to heal. Instead, she discovers betrayal, manipulation, and a truth that shatters everything. What starts as heartbreak quickly turns into horror as Dominic’s mask slips and the storm outside mirrors the storm inside.
When Carmilla steps back into Maria’s life, the past collides violently with the present. Carmilla, seductive yet scarred, carries wounds from an assault that still haunt her. She reveals herself as Scarlett, Dominic’s supposed lover, and claims she’s killed for them both. In her eyes, it’s fate. In Maria’s, it’s darker. The two women are bound by desire, jealousy, and rage, unable to escape their histories.
As the night spirals into blood and betrayal, Maria begins to change. She doesn’t tremble at the violence anymore, but leans into it, shaping her grief into power. Dominic becomes nothing more than a twisted shadow in her mind. Carmilla’s love curdles into obsession, but Maria sees her not as a savior but as a reflection to be silenced. By dawn, only one will remain, reborn into something unstoppable.
Maria evolves from vulnerable to someone who embraces the darkness, transforming into Scarlett by the end. Carmilla starts broken but grows into a manipulative force who thinks she can master her demons. Dominic shifts from indifferent partner to cruel manipulator, ending as a prisoner in Maria’s mind. Their bond begins as fragile comfort, then collapses into jealousy, obsession, and betrayal.
A dark story of toxic love and betrayal, exploring trauma, manipulation, identity, obsession, revenge, isolation, madness, and transformation. It’s about how trauma twists love into obsession, how betrayal fuels revenge, how loneliness breeds monsters, and how transformation rises from destruction.
I had already read Formulation when I read this book. It is equally disturbing, in its own way.
Now, since the book is written by Daniel, and we have read the back, we have been warned. If you are looking for Halloween reads, I think that Daniel might be your guy because I am more scared of humans than ever.
We meet Maria and Dom on their way to a weekend away together. Maria is desperate to keep Dom and Dom.. weeeell, he has his own plans.
Still, I was not quite prepared for what would happen.
As the evening progresses, the more terrifying the storyline gets.
🔹️ “Just what the fu***** fu** was that dream?” 🔹️
My mind has just not thought in those ways, ever. I think I need to read this again to make sure that I caught what I thought I was reading.🫣
I will never be alone in a cabin again. It is just too far away from people.
I had to read this story twice to get my head around things. As much as I love this authors previous work, this seemed different from his other stories, which threw me a little at first, as I wanted more of the same....... Looking back at what I have just read (for the second time), this is probably going to be my favourite of Daniel Lorns work thus far. The pace of this story just drew me completely in, and I felt like i was in some kind of lucid dream. As always, my mind is all over the place after once again, being blown away by this author. Unreal talent!
Five stars because Daniel Lorn clearly wrote this book specifically for readers who love watching terrible people get the karmic smackdown they’ve been begging for. I actually read this without an audiobook, which means it must be witchcraft or something. The ending left me spinning — Carmilla/Maria/Scarlett’s existence felt like a riddle I’m still trying to solve — but even that confusion added to the haunting atmosphere. But honestly, the chaos made it even more fun. If you love dark, psychological horror with revenge that HITS — read it immediately.
Grateful that I was able to read this as an ARC. I recently finished Red and was excited to read something else by Daniel Lorn. His writing is exceptional and I couldn't put this down! Mr. Lorn has a way of bringing you directly into the character's mind. This had many twists I wasn't expecting and once again left me wanting to read more of his writings!
Wow! An amazing read that almost feels like a warped dream I had! I’m not sure what was real, fantasy or demented thoughts. But I honestly don’t care. Give this a chance. It’s a great read.
