Dawn breaks over the mountains. Not a single part of the girl’s once-beautiful body is free from pain. She prays she’ll slip into a blissful unconsciousness, but the sound of an engine rouses her. Her swollen eyes struggle to focus as she raises a bruised arm and waves from the long grass. A decision that will cost her much more than her innocent little life…

With her partner missing, Detective Madison Harper has her work cut out for her juggling the discovery of a body in the murky shallows of Lost Creek and a distraught mother searching for her missing baby boy. She barely has time to eat or sleep. But someone in this small town has lost a loved one, and a child’s life could be in danger. Madison’s sense of duty drives her on, poring over cold case files and interviewing inhabitants of the trailer park near where the headless body was found.

Without a face to identify, or teeth to match to dental records, the decapitated victim is almost impossible to name. Then the postmortem reveals a single red rose stem forced down his throat. What monster would do such a thing? What message were they trying to send? It feels like a dead end until Madison returns home to find the photo of a distressed-looking girl on her windshield. Written on the back is a message that grips her with ice-cold fear: Sofia. Day 1. It suddenly becomes clear that someone is holding young girls captive, and Madison can only imagine what for.

Now hunting for a missing child, a murderer and a missing girl, Madison is pushed to her limit. As terror chokes the close-knit community, she vows that no more innocent lives will be lost on her watch. But as these cases connect, and she comes face to face with the twisted individual at the heart of it all, will there be anyone left to save?

The Crying Girls is book 8 in the Detective Madison Harper series by Wendy Dranfield. This book is an outstanding crime thriller and keeps you on edge throughout. Madison is called to a horrific crime scene in which a body has been found, but it has no head. Identification is going to be very tough. Madison is dealing with a lot in her personal life as Nate has left saying he needs time away. Nate killed a man in the last book to protect Madison and it's not sitting well with him. He's never killed someone before and he can't get over it even though the man he killed was a serial killer. Does that mean the engagement between Madison and Nate is off? Will Nate be coming back? Nate left Brody, his dog behind with Madison. Nate and Brody have never been apart and this worries Madison greatly.

Madison is trying to focus on work with her home life a mess. She brings Brody to work with her as the dog is as sad as she is that Nate is gone. While working the case of the body found with no head, a woman comes in to report a missing baby. It's a cold case as it took place over a year and a half ago. She reported it before, but felt like the time was right to check on any progress. Gina, the woman, feels embarrassed because she was drunk and sleeping when her baby was taken. She knows people are going to judge her, but her life feels worthless without her son. Madison works with Gina to get as much information as possible. Madison relates to Gina as she missed Owen, her son, so much when she wasn't allowed to see him. Both cases are very difficult with little to go on.

Madison finds a photo under her car wiper of a girl tied to a bed. It says Sofia, day one. Has someone taken another girl? Who would leave this photo on Madison's car at her home? Is she in danger? As the investigation progresses, the cases might be connected. How does a missing child, missing girl, and decapitated body fit together? Will Madison find the baby that's been missing for 18 months? Will she be able to identify the body and get some answers? Will she find Sofia before it's too late? Will Nate get the answers he needs and come home? The Crying Girls is fantastic and I couldn't put it down. This series is fantastic and I can't wait for the next book in the series after the ending of this one! I rate The Crying Girls 5 stars with my very highest recommendation. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of The Crying Girls in exchange for a fair review! #TheCryingGirls

Detective Madison Harper is now engaged to PI Nate who disappears to try to come to terms with the fact that he killed a man in self defense. Madison doesn’t have a lot of time to dwell on his absence as a headless, handless body is found in Lost Creek and she has also taken on the cold case of an abducted baby. And then someone places a photo of a young girl on Madison’s windshield with the notation “Sofia, day 1”. Is there any connection among the cases or will Madison’s attention be spread thin trying to solve all of them?

There are mysteries to be solved here with some twists and unexpected revelations, along with family issues for both Madison and Nate. An engrossing read, there are some disturbing situations in this story with interwoven plot lines.

This is the eighth in the Detective Madison Harper series. It is the second I have read. Although it does work as a standalone, the main characters, who are damaged individuals striving to do their best, have back stories which are alluded to but not fully explained. While it doesn’t interfere with the enjoyment of this book, it does leave the reader wanting to know more about their histories.

Thanks to #NetGalley and @Bookouture for the DRC.

Once again I have enjoyed reading Wendy Dranfields new book. I love this series and I was delighted to be given a chance to review this book. The Crying Girls, book 8, is a well written story of a difficult subject. It was full of twists and Nates story added to the tension. The ending floored me and I felt emotional reading it. I can’t recommend this series enough and number eight is probably my favourite.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for the opportunity to read and review this book.

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this awesome book

oh man this one was a hard one to read.... its so dark and the subject matter was very hard to read about.... at times i had to put it down and read a light and fluffy book cos this one is difficult to read

when the girl finally comes around she can hardly move as she is in so much pain and she doesnt know where she is..... but help is at hand.... what she doesnt know is that her nightmare isnt over....

nate is also having a hard time but what he does next isnt what madison was expecting.... he just leaves..... and so begins madisons nightmare because hes also left the dog behind and with no way to track him she can only hope that he doesnt do anything

this book covers everything dark in peoples lives and there was a part of the book that had me in tears.... its not an easy one to read as this authors puts her characters through some hell.... but hopefully there are some fun times ahead in the next book which i am certainly looking forward to

Mind-blowingly good! Absolutely looove this book! I can honestly say it is one of my favourite reads of the year. I love following Madison's life, and that is one my favourite things about this book and the series in general; these books are so personal and honest. Usually series have a book or two that are very personal history related, and then the rest have small bits and pieces here and there, but the Madison Harper series is all about Madison and Nate, as well as their pasts, and with a reason.

In this book the one thing that is not allowed to happen, happens. Nate skedaddles. That is the worst thing he can do to himself, Madison, Owen, and Brody. Never underestimate a dog!

I simply could not let go of this book, not even for a second, so there I was, reading it from cover to cover. Pure love!

Oh Madison welcome back, you have been missed! Here we are with book 8 of what has become one of my favourite series. I love how Wendy Dranfield weaves multiple storylines, whilst building characters throughout and also leaving us with our hearts in our mouths.

Some difficult subjects were covered in this book but dealt with delicately, Madison ends up tied up in multiple cases whilst trying to balance her personal life, does this woman ever sleep? As usual we have all our regular characters too. I would love to have a novella of a crime and dine episode of the podcast with Vince. Once again the town of Lost Creek is upside down with murders, abduction and questionable newbies.

Many thanks for the chance to read this as an eARC to NetGalley, author and publisher.

OH MY DAYS OH MY DAYS OH MY DAYS

I mean seriously!! This book was dark, sinister, shocking and totally totally heartbreaking!!! I spent alternate chapters crying, and my heart just broke. This must have been one heck of a book to try and write. I don't even know if I can write anything coherent as I am just sitting here stunned at what I have just read. I bought the audiobook because I just love the narrator, and god it broke me.

You have the Gina storyline, Nate's sideline - where I was just crying, Steve's storyline - man I broke, Madison's trying to solve a case. The ending was explosive, and I need Book 9. I know there will be so much fallout on its way. The big reveal SHOCKED ME SO MUCH! I had to skip back in the audiobook and then read it on the Kindle, as I couldn't believe what I was hearing and then reading!!!!!! I couldn't believe how much the rug had been pulled away from me. I was gasping! I mean there is so much more that happens - which definitely caused tears, it was just senseless. Not sure a book will be able to top this one for a while.

I have to say, this one will stick with me for a while, and I have to say it's possibly the best one in the series. Wendy has written such a hard-hitting book, that blows your mind, and leaves you shocked at the end. I still can't believe it!!

Rounded up from 4.5

Lately I've been in a bit of a reading slump, so I thought I'd go back to a series I know and love which I'd been neglecting and I thought the Madison Harper series would be a good fit.

I love when you come back to a series you haven't read for a while and you feel you're visiting old friends you haven't in ages.

What a brilliant yet shocking read this was! Fair warning the subject matter of this book is very dark at times.

While Nate is off dealing with his demons and revisiting his past, Madison is tasked with the case of a headless body, the cold case of a missing child and if that wasn't enough her sister Angie, who she has an extremely complicated relationship with, is fresh out of prison.

My heart broke for both Madison and Nate in this book. Just when you thought they were in a good place, something comes along to test these two characters to the limit!

I honestly thought I'd figured out everything with this novel, but Wendy Dranfield added a shocking twist in there at the end that completely caught me off guard!

The crying girls was a gripping and gritty thriller that swept me into the story from the very beginning until the end.

Thank you to NetGalley and Wendy Dranfield for offering this ARC in exchange my review.

I’ve always been a sucker for a gripping psychological thriller, so when I stumbled upon “The Crying Girls” by Wendy Dranfield, I just knew it was going to be a good read. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The pacing of the story is spot-on. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, Dranfield tossed in a curveball that left me reeling. Each chapter unveiled new clues and twists that kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly flipping pages late into the night. It’s not just about the suspense or the mystery; there are moments that tug at your heartstrings and make you reflect on life, loss, and the importance of confronting our truths.
Overall, “The Crying Girls” is a compelling read that skillfully blends intrigue and emotion. If you're looking for a page-turner that is both thrilling and thought-provoking, I highly recommend diving into this one.

This episode of the series is a real thriller. First of all, we discover that Nate has gone missing. That is a real shock and one that causes Madison to take stock of their relationship. This could be the end of life as far as the series is concerned, how can we cope with them not being together? What’s worse is that he’s left poor Brody behind and that’s unforgivable. Then we are introduced to one of the most horrific scenarios a female can imagine, being abducted and abused. As the story goes on, all sorts of horrific events come to light – gory and terrifying murders, missing toddlers and to cap it all, Madison’s sister is back. Meanwhile, Nate is chasing his demons and punishing himself for things that are beyond his control. Everything gets really horrible when things go wrong during a simple peace keeping exercise and towards the end, we experience a really heartbreaking moment when I find myself in floods of tears, followed closely by a heart stopping situation. This is definitely one of the best of this series so far and is truly an emotional rollercoaster. The authors notes at the end are most certainly a good read, where she explains her reasons for this brilliant plot, and issues an enticing invitation to join her for much better news in the next book. I can’t wait.

3.75 stars - The main plot of this book about missing persons was disturbing to me, and not one of my favorites of this series. However, I've been following this series from the beginning, so I'm glad I read it because there are very important developments for Madison, her son Owen, and for Nate. You don't necessarily have to read all of the prior books to enjoy this one, but reading book 7, the one right before this one, will better explain Nate's actions in this one. To know more about Madison and Nate's history, reading at least the first book would be helpful. Nate didn’t play a big role in this book and he was missed, but I loved the ending and I can’t wait for book 9!!

I absolutely love this series and this was just one action packed thriller read.

I was engrossed in the storyline from the very first page with great characters as always

I really missed Nate but I could understand why he had to do what he did.

The ending was sad and it was written beautifully and everything brought to a satisfactory conclusion.

I can thoroughly recommend this book, well done Wendy and look forward to the next one in this series.

Book name: The Crying Girls (Madison Harper Book 8)
Author name: Wendy Dranfield
Pub date : October 07 /2024
My rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you, @netgalley and Wendy Dranfield, for the ARC copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

My thoughts: Wow! The Crying Girls is a gripping, unputdownable page-turner that had my heart racing from start to finish! I’m so lucky to have come across this book because I love crime thrillers, especially detective stories, and this one hit every mark. It's packed full of twists and suspense that will leave your head spinning—just when you think you know what's going on, Wendy Dranfield pulls the rug out from under you.The storyline is intense and brilliantly executed. It's the perfect blend of gripping murders, heartbreaking kidnappings, and shocking twists, all told simultaneously with such finesse. Madison Harper is a fantastic lead character, strong and driven, and I especially loved Brody—he was my personal favorite. The backstories of Nate and Steve were gut-wrenching, adding a deep emotional layer to the high-stakes drama.

Wendy Dranfield's writing is fast-paced, thrilling, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. This is the kind of book where you hold your breath, eagerly waiting to see what happens next, and then—bam!—you’re hit with an emotional family drama that shifts the tone momentarily. While those shifts can be a bit jarring when you’re caught in a suspenseful moment, the overall pacing is still brilliant, and the ending is extremely satisfying.

I loved the twists and turns, the suspense, and how masterfully the author connected all the plotlines. Now that I’ve discovered this is part of a series, I’m excited to read more, but it works perfectly as a standalone as well.If you’re a fan of crime thrillers, mysteries, or detective novels with plenty of suspense and unforgettable characters, you have to read The Crying Girls. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves a heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat story. This book is an absolute 5-star read!

Detective Madison Harper is investigating a gruesome crime – a victim found in the creek missing its head and hands. Clearly, the killer is hoping to keep the victim’s identity a secret, but Madison and the team are hoping that DNA will lead to a name. At the same time, Madison is looking into a cold case of a baby boy who went missing…18 months ago. However is it a cold case if the police were never contacted at the time? Madison struggles to understand how the boy’s mother is only now reaching out for assistance in locating the child. And with the boy’s mother having no friends, family, or even acquaintances to speak of, it’s going to be tough to find any kind of lead to go on. But Madison has never been one to back down from a challenge.

As if this isn’t enough to deal with, Nate has gone AWOL. He left Madison a note that he needed space and time alone, but what scares her is that he also left his phone and his beloved dog, Brody. And that is one dog that doesn’t appreciate his owner going rogue. She could really use Nate’s assistance with these investigations, and she’s torn between worry and anger when reflecting on his absence.

The reader sees from both points of view and it’s hard knowing that Madison has no idea what he’s up to. It seemed a bit of a stretch that he would just up and leave like that because of what happened in the previous case. Sure, it would affect him, but to that extent? That he would just up and leave without even talking to Madison about it? Especially when his actions were to protect her against someone truly evil. I mean, what if she was in danger now (she kind of always is!) and he was nowhere to be found – he would never be able to live with himself.

I know they’re just characters, but I’m so invested in Madison and Nate and I want them to work so bad! No more drama with these two! And Brody deserves to have them both by his side, no flaking out. Does it work out for the three of them? You’ll have to read the story to find out..

Oh wow. Detective Maddison Harper book 8 and it's the best so far! My heart was breaking before I was even halfway through. The plot is dark and sometimes harrowing. There's plenty of twists to keep you hooked. I read this in one day as I was enjoying it so much. Easy 5⭐from me and I won't hesitate to recommend it.

Madison’s sense of duty drives her on, poring over cold case files and interviewing inhabitants of the trailer park near where the headless body was found.

A mutilated body is found lacking head and hands to prevent identification. A mother begs Detective Madison Harper to find her missing baby. But Madison has her own worries as her fiance vanishes in the middle of the night...
The Crying Girls is the 8th book in the Detective Madison Harper series. There are a few plot threads that follow on from the last book (which I have somehow missed :( ) so I would advise reading the books in order.
Madison is deluged with crime cases to investigate but her focus is affected by Nate's disappearance. Events in the last book have taken their toll on his mental health and he needs space so steals away in the middle of the night, not even taking his beloved dog Brody with him. Madison's son Owen also has something major to announce which also takes her by surprise and adds to her emotional turmoil.
Most of the book is written in the present day to show Madsion and her investigation. However, there are some chapters from the perspective of a teenager held captive. It soon becomes clear from that timeline that this plot thread goes back many years. I guessed the connection between the two timelines around the halfway point and then enjoyed seeing how Madison worked it out. However there were other twists that I had no clue in advance!
The style of writing is easy to read and the chapters are quite short meaning that the plot develops quickly. There are some gruesome passages about the forensic details of the bodies: these are presented objectively but the characters have a natural reaction against their findings.
The Crying Girls is a tense and enjoyable crime thriller with some great twists.

The Crying Girls by Wendy Dranfield is the 8th book in the excellent Detective Madison Harper series. This has been an excellent series from the very first book. All these books have been written well, they always draw you in with all the twists and turns throughout and excellent characters. I love the main character Detective Madison Harper who is now engaged to PI Nate. Things have become complicated between them, when Nate disappears to try to come to terms with the fact that he killed a man in self defence.
Sadly Detective Madison Harper can not spend time to dwell on his absence as she is called to a horrific crime scene OF headless, handless body that is found in Lost Creek.........Plus, with any spare time she may have left she has taken on a cold case of an abducted baby........Does this character ever sleep?

Someone places a photo of a young girl tied to a bed,.on Madison’s windshield with the notation “Sofia, day 1”.

Is there any connection among these cases or will Madison’s attention be spread thin trying to solve all of them?

Who would leave this photo on Madison's car at her home?

Who is she and Is she in danger?

Will she find Sofia before it's too late?

Will Nate get all the answers he needs and come home and start to live again with Madison who he loves so much?

WoW this book is So good I ended up being stuck in my comfy chair and finished reading this excellent book.

I highly recommend it. Another 5 star read.

Big Thank you to NetGalley and especially Bookouture for my ARC.

The Crying Girls (Detective Madison Harper Book 8) by Wendy Dranfield is a fast-paced and thrilling book.

I love this series and these characters. Although this book had some really sad moments and some disturbing scenes, the author weaved a gripping and intense thriller.

The story starts with a headless body being found in a trailer park creek. And a distraught mother is searching for her missing baby boy. Madison’s sense of duty drives her on, poring over cold case files and interviewing inhabitants of the trailer park near where the headless body was found. Madison is hunting for a missing child, a murderer, and a missing girl.

In addition to Madison pushing herself to the limits, Nate leaves as he is at a breaking point. I was a bit miffed with Nate leaving and also leaving Brody behind, but the more I read, the more it made sense for him to find some space and determine his next steps in healing. But poor Brody didn't understand why his owner was gone.

This story had some really good red herrings, twists and turns, and some shocking moments. The writing is solid, and the storyline is intense.

I'm looking forward to what's next for Madison and Nate and learning about Owen and his decision to leave college.

I would highly recommend starting this series from book 1. I would also recommend this author. A great series, The Crying Girls is an excellent addition to the Detective Madison Harper series.

Another one of the great series I love to read. The story is once again great but I’ll admit to feeling a little sad since Nate played such a small role in this one. I understand why he was absent for much of the book, but that doesn’t make me sad for his absence. But even with Madison’s son Owen being away at school, I’ll forgive the author for finding a way to bring him into the plot.

I love the unique premise of this series. Both Madison and Nate were wrongfully imprisoned, exonerated and working to set their life back on the right track with all the extra backage that brings. Madison being a detective and Nate a private eye. And I shouldn’t forget my favorite character, Brody, Nate’s dog. Who also mourns Nate not being around in this one. I just love when an animal serves a purpose in a book.

Madison has her work cut out for her. A body missing its head and hands is hard to identify and a women claiming her child went missing. All while she is wondering where Nate is and how is his mental status.

The story, while dark, was gripping and kept me glued to the book. The mix of both Madison’s personal life with her work life is always well balanced. And that ending. WOW. I’m always afraid of spoiling something with too many details, but trust me when I say the multiple POVs, cases and Madison’s focus had me reading this as quickly as I could.

Is it too soon to wonder what will happen next?

Still reeling from his actions during the closing events of the last book, Grave Mountain, Madison’s fiancé, Nate, is nowhere to be found. A note telling her he needs time away sends her reeling and makes her determined to get used to life without him.
Three cases come to Madison’s attention, and she struggles to prioritise them efficiently. Aware that all eyes are on her and wanting to ensure she delivers on each of them, she sets about trying to get answers. The synopsis explains the three cases and I don’t want to rehash that, so I will focus on a spoiler-free review.
If this is your first book in this series, you will need to know that Madison’s place in the Lost Creek police department was hard won, and she continues to fight daily for the support that is naturally afforded to her colleagues. Her personal life has figured in the previous books and has been laid open to scrutiny. The one constant has been her relationship with Nate, and without him, she has lost her confidante and sanity checker.
Madison’s grit and determination drive her forward. Although some of her decisions seem questionable, she keeps getting the results that she strives for. I make no apologies for the fact that she’s one of my favourite detectives, and I admit that one of the attractions is the Lost Creek setting. For personal reasons, Colorado holds a special place in my heart.
The story is delivered with mastery, and this reader desperately turned the pages as the plot unfolded, revealing twists and turns that kept me off the scent. Wendy Dranfield has created a complex collection of characters. Each one is perfectly developed to the degree that I was shocked by a few of the events unfolding on the pages.
This thriller will remain in my thoughts for some time, and I cannot recommend it enough.

This remains one of my all time favorite crime thrillers. Another brilliant addition to the series, though quite dark due to the themes. Nonetheless, I was hooked from the 1st page. Madison continues to be a strong, compelling lead. In this book, her personal struggles with her past add an emotional depth to her character, making her not only a determined detective but also a relatable figure grappling with complex emotions. Her growth over the course of the series is evident, and this installment allows her to confront her inner demons while chasing down a chilling killer. In addition, there was a personal angle to the investigation as she was looking for a missing person in her own life.

The Crying Girls is another gripping entry in the Detective Madison Harper series, cementing Wendy Dranfield's reputation as a master of psychological thrillers. With a fast-paced plot, a complex and relatable protagonist, and a chilling mystery, this book will appeal to fans of dark crime fiction. Though some elements may feel familiar to thriller fans, the emotional depth and intense suspense will keep readers turning the pages until the very end. If you're a fan of intricate mysteries with strong, evolving characters, The Crying Girls is a must-read

Lock your doors, turn on all the lights, and pull the blinds

Before you start reading this book. This is one of the most realistic and chilling crime thrillers ever.

Girls are missing from all around the region of Lost Creek, Colorado. Some creep likes them young and since no bodies ever show up, where have they gone?

Gina was abducted late at night, raped and beaten then rescued by someone else who told her lies, fed on her insecurities and raped her repeatedly. Days turned to years and eventually the hatred turned to acceptance and what she told herself was love. How could it be she loved a man who kept her imprisoned for years?

Meanwhile, Detective Madison Harper was tangled in her own web of problems, murders and suicides when suddenly her sister, who was supposed to be in prison shows up begging for
Madison's forgiveness. And to make matters worse Nate left in the middle of the night, leaving a note suggesting he needs space and since he also deserted his beloved K9 dog, Madison believes he may be gone for good this time.

Wendy Francisco is one of my favorite mystery writers. Her characters are true to life and realistic. The plots are interesting and the mystery intriguing. This entire series is fantastic. Don't miss a single book!
