BOOK 1: RESISTANCE 1940. France is on the brink of Nazi occupation. Meanwhile, the de Gruchy family are planning a lavish wedding in Chartres. Captain James Barron, a British intelligence officer, is invited by the beautiful Madeleine de Gruchy, the middle sister. He can’t pass up seeing her again after their fleeting rendezvous in Paris. But when the German army breach the border, Barron flees to England. This could be the last time he sees the de Gruchys . . . and Madeleine. Then he’s put in charge of resistance fighters in France, giving him the chance to see Madeleine again. But it’s an opportunity that could tear the de Gruchys apart and put his career at risk.
BOOK 2: THE GAME OF TREACHERY Captain Barron is trying to set up an escape route for fallen pilots through occupied France. His only hope rests with the de Gruchy family. But one of the de Gruchy sisters, Liane, is wanted by the Germans. She is a ruthless assassin with a track record of murder. The Germans are eager to capture her, so they arrest her parents to draw her out. With the sisters in the wind and their parents taken, Barron’s vital operation hangs in the balance . . .
BOOK 3: LEGACY OF HATE In Nazi-occupied France the assassination of a German commander by Amalie de Gruchy sparks a crisis. Captain Barron is determined to find her before the German police. Her sister Liane, thought to have been killed months before, comes out of hiding to help in the search. But soon the French Resistance finds itself with a much bigger problem. The Germans have uncovered British plans which, in the wrong hands, could change the course of the war . . .
BOOK 4: THE BRIGHTEST DAY 1943. As the Nazi forces tighten their grip on France, Major Barron leads a desperate fight from London. His agent and lover, Liane de Gruchy, is the face of the Resistance and while she’s alive there is still hope. She has managed to evade capture so far and now the two must work together to drive the Nazis out. As D-Day approaches, they must risk everything to hold off the Gestapo.

Yes, the formatting of this box set definitely has issues, but the story is a good solid historical fiction adventure and the characters are wonderful, especially Liane and Joanna. Loved how the women outwitted their Gestapo opponents. Plenty of tension and action in a story land-marked with major historical events. The French Resistance comes alive in these books. An enjoyable read.
Overall, I enjoyed all the books. As many have commented, there are lots of formatting issues on the Kindle version, but I got used to it. All and all, great historical fiction and kept me interested the entire time.
I could well have given this book a four or five star rating as the stories were good and kept one reading. However I do not know how it ever got released in this kindle format. The formatting of the book was atrocious, words run together, split between two lines, sentences split into pieces and then mixed up like a puzzle. One book, the first one was repeated after the second one! If someone who doesn't read a lot had got this on their kindle as holiday reading, they would not have been able to follow the stories, which is pity as they are good. Get someone to edit it and you will get something worth buying. I'm glad I got it for nothing, but if it had been well formatted, I would have been happy to pay for it for a good read.
I don't do book reviews like those you keep seeing. I find that some reviews are too biased towards the reviewers personal taste, they can give too much of the plot away, and I personally hate that, as it can make me feel that the book is not worth me reading. I have read and continue to read a large number of books, mainly ebooks, of varied genres and subjects. I much prefer to take the back cover preview or a publishers printed synopsis as a starting point, as it can either intrigue you enough to read the book or provide you with enough information to make you decide that the book is simply, not one for you! My review rules are: The more I liked it then the more stars I give it. If there are too many typos or grammatical errors the less stars I will give. If the storyline or plot is poor or contains too many errors, that the characters are too weak, or the ending is lacking something, even if the ending just don't feel like the end, then the less stars I will give. If however, I feel that the synopsis means that I don't think it's a book for me to read and review then I will inform either the author or publisher of this fact rather issue it with a low star rating, thus negatively effecting its ratings. Simple, uncomplicated and to the point without giving anything about the storyline away. Some of the books I read have been given to me by the author or the authors publishers as a pre-release copy and this does not bias my reviews in any way. I am occasionally asked to review audio books, which I do so in the same way.
This is a marathon to read so take your time. To begin with like other readers comments so serious editing is required here eg no defined chapters or paragraphs. Sentences merging into each other. Rebooting of kindle as blank pages kept freezing. At this I am halfway through the story and will be having a break as all of the above is doing my head in! The plot is brilliant. So far both sides of WW11 have merged quite well and is fascinating to read. Still don’t like the Nazi’s- horrible people! The Resistance itself very empowering. Their strength in trying to defeat the Nazi’s amazes me always. The leadership of women at that time is outstanding and forever will be acknowledged. Will continue reading this series until the end but a break is required. Plowed through to the finish and it is a good story. The thing that bugs me that the author gave the Nazi’s an aura of being gentlemen, they were far from it in reality.
This book needs an editor who knows the English language. Almost every page had 5 - 10 words run together. Hard to determine what was said.
Many sentences had a line feed in the middle of the sentence. Most paragraphs were not seperarted from the previous paragraph, causing problems in the flow of the book.
An entire section of the first 'book' was repeated for the second 'book'.
The hundreds of formatting errors and rum together words seriously detracted from the story
If the author were to have run a spellchecker and allowed the word processor to format the sentences, it would have been a much better book!
This is a review of the four books comprising the complete French Resistance series. This series begins the day before the beginning of World War 2 & revolves around a wealthy wine producing family, British intelligence officers, an American-Swedish spy, French resistance fighters, & various Nazi villains. There is suspense, drama, romance, & some Nazi brutality. This is a good read with typos. These 4 books are available individually or together as a set. Recommend these books set in France, England, & Germany from Sept 1939-Aug 1944 with the liberation of Paris.
The proofreader should be shot ,,,,if there ever was a proofreader!
This is the worst book I have had thesis.easure torea This is easily the worst book I have ever read. Not that I was sufficiently masochistic to finish it. The typos were on every other line with words run together, broken lines etc. Has anybody even glanced at the script to check it? And when the first chapter was repeated in its entirety half way through the book I gave up! Absolutely shocking andaslovenlyandidle presentation...see what I mean about running words together!
This author is assume. The story keeps you on the edge of you seat till the very end. It main chapter James Burton is on occasion unbelievably horrific but the rest of the characters are believable. The interweaving of the characters are very fascinating and realistic. All in all anyone who likes spy stories will love this. Should be considered for a tv series.
I've never complained about the lack of editing in a review before now. Between the typos, punctuation and formatting issues plus the awful sentence structure I've given up on trying to read this. I'm not a grammar nazi, but the issues actually interfere and interrupt the flow to the point of not being able to follow the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and unfolding drama. It was a chore dissecting the overwhelming number of editing errors as well as what must have been digital glitches to deliver the ebook. Very distracting and disappointing. I had a difficult time determining not to give only 2 stars but decided to review the author’s creation and dialogue rather than the editing or print mess.
I loved the series as it Covered a great span of time. I would have given the series a 5 but after tp plus typos I lost count. More words than icouldcount was a real stump.ing block. What ever happendtospell check? Also, one of the book’s repeated insert. What’s with that??
Enjoying WWII novels since I read Jack Higgins, this one centered mostly on the French Resistance which I thought was great. My only complaint was the editing. Either it was because of the kindle version or the editor did a less than perfect job. The author, however is not to blame for that faux pas.
Another great book series from Christopher Nicole. A bit hard to read at times due to incorrect spelling and words merged together, whomever proof read this book needs to refund their fee.
The important part is that the story was very interesting, a bit historically incorrect at times, but definitely worth spending the time to read it.
I really enjoyed these books. Great characterisation and the storyline followed the whole of WW11. I found it irritating though to see spelling mistakes eg ‘here’ when it should be ‘hear’ and also to find no paragraphing for change of location .
The poor formatting of the book made it extremely difficult to read and possibly enjoy. I actually had to read one section twice! A great read but any pleasure was eliminated by the terrible formatting.
Good thought provoking series but could do with some serious proof reading. My Kindle version had many words running together so had to read over to get the understanding. Lack of Chapters meant lack of clarity when swapping locations and characters.
Standard Nicole, beautiful rich people, sex affairs, death, all set against a rich historical tapestry. Also if you read the Anna Fehrbach novels before this you will see a lot of straight duplication here in the person of Joanna
What an Odyssey- a glorious read of wartime France - written with an with entertaining flair - like serious history meets Hogan’s Heroes with some Harlequin Romance mixed in - thank you Christopher Nicole!
Great story. Weaves French resistance and the British assistance though a very complex narrative of the history of the resistance starting in 1939, including liberation of Paris. Highly recommended
The twists and turn with characters who take you on a rollercoaster of suspense treachery and romance. The fight for freedom at the centre of these books.
It was interesting. It was a love story and about an entire family involved in WWIi. It was historical fiction, but you still learned a little about how the war was like.
Would have been better if been proof read. No paragraphs of proper lay out. Also better if all in one book. Could have been easier to read with these done
The series covers the whole of the 2nd World war, a family torn apart by love and hate, how survival meant annoying the enemy,4books that are difficult to put down.
I really enjoyed this book .The author had research where the resistance were and how they lived.I found myself wanting to know what was happening on the next page .The author knows how to capture the readers attention
