Ever wonder what it's like to be a disposable Minion forced onto Quests by Summoners?
It was supposed to be another boring day at the insurance office for Rico Kline, but powerful forces had other plans for him.

Finding himself repeatedly summoned to other worlds as a disposable minion, Rico must face deadly foes, disarm insidious traps, become a test subject, and run the occasional errand for his various summoners.

At least when each summoning is over, he’s rewarded and sent back home. But being back home has its own set of problems, and he'll need to grow stronger to face it all.

Bestseller Dean Henegar returns with this unique spin on isekai LitRPG, about a MC turned into a summon minion who has to complete tasks for random summoners, allowing for a variety of adventures, foes, and missions as he progresses in power each time... But is any of it random?

Unique storyline but frustrating to read

The idea of the main character being a summoned minion seems totally counterintuitive to the idea of a protagonist. A very unique reading experience.

The book is frustrating to read in the beginning due to our hero (I have already forgotten his name) being thrown into situations deliberately getting him killed in seconds of being summoned and he is constantly being judged and weighed on his performance as terrible (pretty sure the SYSTEM is a judge panel of DRAG QUEENS). And the guide assigned to him answers basically nothing and won't go into any detail about anything.

There is some weird drama of an earth corporation wanting to kidnap the main character for experiments but nothing really moves forward on that plot line; maybe it will continue in the next book?

The last third, maybe half? - of the book is one summon that ends up being an adventure typical of fantasy books, so the structure of the book changes dramatically. I was skimming a lot of the last 50 pages as I really got bored of the fighting in the mech suit (reminded me of watching first person shooting games).

Anyway, it is absolutely a unique style book, unfortunately it just frustrated me too much to want to continue the series. I hope you enjoy the book more than I did.

Rinse and repete

At 60%, Its like reading the same thing over and over. I couldn't feel anything about the MC, he was just kind of blah. Like many stories that come from RR, the plot moves at a glacial pace.

Massive side-quest time sink

The story is well written, interesting and has good pacing and then it just goes sideways on a massive side quest that I did not find interesting at all.
I do like the main character's appreciation for loot.

That Was An Interesting One

Nice new take on the genre. Character growth is good, in ability and outlook. The “system summoning” was a neat and quirky intro to this system for us and the MC. Was entertaining throughout with interesting characters and world/universe building. I’m definitely looking forward to starting the next one.

An amusing take on the isikai genre. Rico gets pulled into adventures by summoners who have him do various things - mostly deadly dangerous. Then he comes back home, naked(!) and confused. As this progresses he learns more and more about what is happening and is able to act more independently. But in the end he’s still stuck as a person who can be pulled from nearly any activity by another summoner.

DNF 20%

Bored to tears by this book. It's the same all the time, though the title kind of gives that away. The MC is plain, which isn't an issue, but he's also just going along with everything it seems. He feels like a wet rag without any personality. This would have been more interesting if he'd actually DO something against the summoning itself.

The premise is interesting, but the execution is lacking.

1) The whole system just seems designed to deuce on the MC. Seems like every situation just craps on him either through some random chance, or by design, and it's off-putting. I don't want to read a story where the MC is worthless and never (comparatively) improves.

2) It is very boring. I made it a little over half way through and decided to find some reviews hoping someone would say "it gets better" only to find the opposite. I'm off to greener pastures.

Book one

I took my time reading this one. I think that this is probably one of the best thought out travel to another world style of books.
The editing was top notch as far as I could tell. I found only two mistakes and will list them on Goodreads.
If you have enjoyed this book, more is being published on Royalroad as of today.
I recommend this one if you want one that has some kind of good logic going for it.

9/10 Seriously check this one out.

Started a bit stronger than it ended, and bogged down in the middle. Reminded me a lot of the author's Limitless Lands series in that section and wandered off what I thought was the premise of the book. Seemed back on the main arc in the last couple of chapters, so we'll see what the author can do with book 2 when that arrives.

On my way to maybe die again…

Someone was pounding on the door and it was 3am. Who would be here that early? Danny checked the camera on the door and saw three people dressed in black business suits. Two of them were big body builder type guys and another was a woman. He had been kind of expecting this and was happy he had replaced the deadbolt screws with longer ones. Danny grabbed his go bag, pulled open his window and started climbing down the fire escape.

As he landed below, he heard the door to his apartment give way. When Danny was starting to turn, a man stepped out from behind the dumpster and said “Stop where you are, we are here to help you”. This man was dressed like the others but he had on a bowler hat. He started to run out of the alley, but three more of the thugs in black suits cut off his escape. Danny had little time, the three from the door were headed down the fire escape. He needed to get past the man by the dumpster and then try to bull rush the ones at the end of the alley to make his break.

He kicked the bowler man in the gut and kneed him in the chin and broke for the end of the alley. Danny saw now that two of the men had pistols and one was on his phone. This wasn’t going to be easy to escape this time. Danny had a bit of an advantage, he reached into his core to the mana (magic) that rested there. He cast a protection spell around himself and he glowed red momentarily. He cast a summons and a man in chainmail came through. Danny ordered him to attack the three. One went down before the man in chainmail was gunned down. He opened another portal, this time a pair of goblins came through with spears. Danny didn’t even need to ask them to attack, they just did out of their own blood-lust. Danny started to run to end of the alley, when he felt two bullets rip through him. He was dying with not enough mana left to heal himself. The woman from the front door came up to him and told him, she wouldn’t let him suffer.

The system had to choose another candidate, and it found Rico. He works at an insurance company. After his boss talked to him about making sure he meets his monthly quota, he needs an aspirin. As his neighbor is grabbing him one, Rico starts to see spots and he wonders if he is having a stroke. A big burst of pain slammed into him and he hears “link established and you are summoned”. Since it is a first summons, Rico hears that since it is his first summons, he is allowed to ask one question. He asks a bunch of questions and is forced into silence. The voice tells him that he is a level zero summons, it is related to combat related and that he didn’t have any weapons. He would be clothed in his work clothes. A blue oval appeared and he was forced to walk through. Rico appeared in a clearing in the forest. A young mage tells him to stop the orc. Here Rico was in his company polo and khakis against a large armor wearing orc with a giant axe. He was forced to stand in place as the orc attacked. With no weapons, and forced compliance, he punched the orc. The orc sliced him in two. He appeared back in a vast darkness with the voice. The voice said that his performance was abysmal and his rewards would reflect a level zero summons at the abysmal level. Rico was then returned to his world. His neighbor found some ibuprofen. He then asked Rico why he was naked. Rico suddenly snapped out of his daze and quickly started getting dressed. He realized that he had a small leather pouch in his hand and threw it in his pocket. His boss came by as he was buttoning his pants. She called HR. HR and security came to his desk told him he was fired and asked him to leave. And so it begins…

I love this book so much!!! Totally worth getting the audiobook too 'cause the narrators top notch. And the book is absodamnlutely one of my favorites... But really picking up this one was a no-brainer since it's written by the man who wrote Cat Core, and I know you loved that trilogy, didn't cha'. Also as a side-note I really enjoy deck-building litRPG's and I feel like this is kinda sorta like the reverse of that, as Rico is kinda like what a card (the entity) in the deck might feel, to be Summoned only as a tool and then discarded when the summons was over... Only sometimes a bond is created between the summoner and his tool and they can form a pact... and yes that's the best way for Rico to level getting experience points! And wow the Gnomes names are soooooooo funny, like these for starters Lumpleniz, Fazzlemore, and Fitzfazzle... Glumbleflump, Nobbleyzip... I ask you, how can you not laugh out loud when you hear the narrator pronounce those?!? Huh!?!
And well life on earth has been rather rocky for Rico since this all started. To find out how grab this action-driven litRPG adventure.

Rico is an ordinary guy, living an ordinary life - until he is summoned to a magical world to battle!

I was drawn to read this book by the basic concept: in fantasy books, where do summoned creatures come from? Are they simple magical constructs, or are they something else? The author took that idea and ran with it.

The first few summons are brief, and give a good variety of worlds and creatures to fight. About halfway through, there is a longer summons, so if you get impatient with the shorter ones, you might like that better. It didn't bother me, and I liked the pace of learning about being a summoned being, and what direction Rico will take.

I also enjoyed all the glimpses of different worlds, and the attitudes of the different summoners. Rico got into some good battles, though he didn't always have to fight.

The one thing that I didn't like was how Rico didn't react to the trauma of his experiences. He had few strong emotions. This was explained by the summoning system numbing his emotions so he doesn't become traumatized, and can continue doing the job.

I hope the author addresses this in the next book, and lets Rico have more emotions.

TL;DR: Good story, read if fan of isekai or system/game-like elements in fantasy. Story is tedious in beginning, first few chapters have to be powered through.

This book was surprisingly good. Well written and entertaining concept. Initially it is kind of a slog as the author wanted it to be realistic, so the MC goes to a hospital, thinks he is going crazy etc. Once the story is done establishing rhe setting, it gets much better. I like that the MC makes good decisions, and the world building is great. My one conplaint is the stuff that happens on Earth. As is typical of stories where the MC can travel between fantasy realms and modern Earth, I find myself entirely focused on the fantasy part and glossing over the Earth stuff. It would have been better if the Earth stuff was slice of life style, with MC popping back for junk food and flushing toilets or something. But all the cult and shadowy government stuff is tedious. I really hope that going forward the Earth plot line gets resolved or minimized quickly - maybe the MC can move out of Earth, going back only when summoned or for shopping? Unlikely but fingers crossed.

As someone who thinks RPG elements take away from a story, when I first started reading this book I thought it was going to be more of the same, but Dean Henegar managed to write one of the best stories I've found so far in the LitRPG genre. This isn't stat-spread-sheet like some of the oddly popular books out there. This doesn't drag on. It gets to the point and keeps moving forward. There are moments of seriousness that are well timed. Rico is a protagonist who clearly learns from his mistakes, and doesn't start with some lazy overpowered ability or equipment that makes him mop the floor like every other lame LitRPG story out there. He's just a man working his way up slowly but surely in a new world with interesting elements that he can use to his advantage. By the end of the book I feel like a solid foundation is formed for future books, and I really look forward to the rest of the story. Perhaps the biggest take-away for me is also the fact that the conversations between characters don't feel forced. This is a well written book by a man who knows how to tell a story.

Very creative concept of life as a summoned creature

The MC was randomly chosen to be a summoned minion without warning or consent. Such is life. He is added to a queue and assigned to random summons of worlds relatively similar to ours, but with much more mana, though not always. A major issue however is wardrobe failure upon his return, as his clothes dont get summoned with him so they fall to the ground. This causes quite a few issues, as well as getting low pay for his summoned contracts since he's untrained. Then he's gotta figure out how to do a currency exchange from extraterrestrial copper and silver coins to spendable dollars. In addition he needs to find local martial training so he can do better and earn higher comissions on his contracts.

There was even a rich young master that challenged him to a duel for easily wounded pride, or maybe just to take advantage of a new guy. All told, this was actually quite an intruiging story.

You are Summoned is the first book in this series, and it puts a rather unique spin on being a character in a LitRPG story. The main character is from earth, but he's not truly a main character in as far as being the main character in his own story goes, yes, sure, but he's only the summoned minnion to deal with whatever issue needs solved for those who summon him to other realms/places/worlds, although apparently, he isn't the only one on earth, which certainly adds an extra layer of instering aspects to the story. It's very well done, and I've already borrowed the second book in the series from KU so I can read it as soon as possible. It's a refreshing change from most of the LitRPG stories out there, and one I'd recommend to LitRPG fans everywhere.

fun

Guy gets forcibly recruited by an uncaring System to be a Summoned Being. He gets an unhelpful advisor. And is thrust into various summonings where he is used as a disposable mana construct. Eventually he meets up with some gnomes who learn he’s real and get him an extended summon to fight undead in a war. They win. Meanwhile on Earth clandestine organizations are tracking him and trying to forcefully recruit him. So he escapes and goes into hiding.

It is an interesting premise. The system uses summons to force mana into manaless worlds so it can move in. It hides real summoned beings among mana constructs so most don’t realize they are real. It feels like a short story anthology due to the story’s nature. The pacing is pretty good. The narrator is great. It was a good listen. I’ve gone on to the second book. Please enjoy

I love it

It is a great take on a litrpg style. I really like it. Dean Henegar is been in my top 5 authors to read since if first read a book of his. I love the characters how he crafted them. Just like anyone I hope for someone to get overpowered abilities but it seems to be very structured growth and is one that I am excited to see how the multi worlds collide in the next book. If your look for a good book to read I feel this is a good choice. On the litrpg note it is not over done with stats you get the information quick and move on. So read if your into litrpg. Can't wait for the next book.

A Great Surprise

When I first heard of this story, I thought it was an interesting premise. I also thought that it might get old and repetitive fast. I was wrong. This turned out to be a good read. I'll admit that some of it felt a little slowed down at times, but it didn't detract from the story at all. The premise of being a summon for anyone to summon at any time is wild and really well executed. It's a unique take on litrpg that I haven't seen before, and it kept me turning pages at the expense of other activities, like sleep. Well done, I look forward to reading further adventures of Rico Kline.

Started as a story about a guy randomly summoned to different worlds and the first section of book was interesting. Then the story switches to a pure mech story and I totally lost interest when it did. 4 stars for the first section and DNR after he gets to the gnomes. Not sure how long he stays there but it's dozens of chapters so I dropped it. Also, undead and zombies are vastly overused in today's literature so it gets really hard to read another. Grammar is good enough. People who like mech stories will love this story probably. The cover should show a mech since that's the focus of the story.

Mostly enjoyable

First the not good: There were some typos, not many but a few. The system 'guide' was kind of meh. Not a huge fan of the class choice, honestly the other options seemed more interesting.
Positives: A well written book with a good plotline. An MC that is not a superman or a prodigy so he needs to learn and advance with experience. There are teasers for RW conspiracy and a possible long term enemy.
Generally a good book in the genre. I highly recommend if you are getting tired of all the OP characters. Tom out

I've read this series, and I'm of 2 minds-- and unlikely to continue.

The Good
- Fresh take on a very cookie-cutter genre. The idea of being a summoned is new and creates reuse potential.

The Bad
- The backdrop either leads to a choice of Quantum Leap redux or Groundhogs Day. Author goes with the former, and too much focus on story vignettes and not enough on a character/progression arc of how to escape the system.
- I feel nothing for the MC, who's far less interesting than the backdrop created.

I thought the book had a bit more of an interesting premise. I do wish the main character wasn't so dull. You had a great opportunity to make someone who was very upset and angry about his circumstances. Imagine you were summoned and forced to do someone else's bidding, I think there was a lot more room for emotion here. I felt like the characters really missed the mark; I found it hard to really get attached or interested in any of the characters including the MC. It was a nice try though.

you get a silver

As a fighter the summoner stuff isn’t my favorite but I enjoyed the book. Having actually bought and sold silver and precious metals the whole pawn shop mess was hard to read. I would encourage the author to study or actually do the earthly things before writing about them when they are an integral part of the story. Still wondering why the mc needs a cell phone.

Very Unique!

This was a great twist on what you would normally encounter with the LitRPG genre! The MC is a regular guy who can be summoned by people to do jobs for them in other worlds. We had a few quick summons and one long till completion summon. I enjoy the mix of the two and learning about the some of the summoners and their world! A great start and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here!

Interesting concept, boring main character.
The character is a dullard and seems slow. Asks dumb questions when he has the opportunity and makes impulsive decisions, ignorant of his situation, which lands him into avoidable problems. Also, he seems too be a simp. No one likes a weak willed character.

Good Premise. Well Executed.

The protagonist has an interesting adventure where you learn about the world with him. He doesn’t have any over the top quirks that make you want to strangle him. He doesn’t have any word renaissance fair hobby that makes him competent from the very beginning. There is no love interest. This is just a good idea executed well.

The Cover Made Me Buy It

Ever see a cover that makes you laugh so loud you just have to buy it. Not just kindle Unlimited I mean buy it as an ebook and paperback. 79 chapters and such value to enjoy getting into this world. I am going to read book 2 very soon and I am glad to see its a trilogy to remember.

Interesting premise, and I enjoyed the first half of the book. Then it took a left turn and went from an Isekai summoned story to a military steam punk tech story that lasted way too long. Nothing from the first half of the book gets continued in the second half, its like an entirely different story in an entirely different genre. Just didn't work for me.
