Presents the classic tale of two children who, while trying to make their way home after being deliberately left in the forest by their father, encounter a wicked witch who wants to eat them.
This is a timeless classic. It has never been a favorite of mine only because of the step mother sending the children off into the forest. Though the children did learn to find a way to help them find their way back home. It teaches a lesson but its still not a favorite. The illustrations are wonderful, bright, colorful, and cheery.
Scary! I remember being scared by the old lady being pushed into an oven and burning to death! Not a great visual for a child. And I'm still scared of ovens! And cremation!
This book is definitely a classic tale. The way kids are walking by themselves in a forest is common scene in many traditional tales like Red ridding hood and Goldilocks. The pictures are appropriate for the time frame of the story. I will not recommend this book to a pre-k group but it is a good classic for 6 year and up.
