I have been eagerly awaiting this sequel to Into the Shadows. Dealing with mass hysteria and emulating the atrocities that happened to innocents during the Red Scare, the Holocaust, and the Japanese Internment camps, Kirkpatrick’s Into the Shadows Series quickly captivates the reader. Likewise, the message she expounds about prejudice is loud and clear, and I think both of these novels are must reads for our youth.
Paivi is still on the run with her brother and Christian, but as her powers increase, her determination to fight back becomes overpowering, and our beloved characters begin making plans to take on the government. I wasn’t expecting this development in the novel, but am glad that Kirkpatrick added it as the evil needs to be stopped, and in a way, it reminded me of the hit TV series Heroes, which I really enjoyed. With their superpowers marking them an enemy of the state, and her parent nearly dead in a concentration camp, there really isn’t anything Paivi and her friends can do but fight back.
Though a bit slower in terms of action than the first novel, I still found this a very good, enticing read, and I am hoping the final installment will come out sooner rather than later as this novel once again ends on a cliffhanger, and the suspense is killing me.
The only problem is: It´s too short! It should have been thrice as long! The characters and the story are so great but there is not enough time for them to live!
Paivi is an awesome and strong heroine without the usual "problems" some heroines encounter. She does not get out of character when confronted with certain situations (especially romantic ones). Maybe she is a BIT overpowered but okay...she at least can kick ass!
The romance in this series is very real and not too cheesy as in many many many other YA books. It just feels right and not overdone and does not take a huge part of the story.
A bit more background knowledge would have been great. Can every EOS learn what Paivi has learned? Where does the power come from and how does it differ?
I loved the development of Torsten! He became one of my favorites! I do not like his name though (and I´m german ;) )
I know the story is based on the Holocaust but the scenes at the camp were just TOO similar...like...100%. it could have been set apart a little bit. Also, I think the protagonists are displayed a little too young. (How old is Torsten anyway? 13?12? It is never mentioned!)
But i´m just picky. As you can see at the stars, I really liked this book! It is definitely worth a read! But read the prequel first! ;)
I really really really liked this book. The characters developed so nicely, the story unwound in an interesting way. But...IT DOESNT HAVE ENOUGH PAGES D: It was over too quick, way too quick. It was like..let's do this, and now this and then this and then we are done reading this. I would have loved more detail. More detail about training, more detail about those cool monks =D More detail about the Resistance group Jason is in, more detail about the camp. Just...more!
I like Paivi. She is a stand-up heroine. She doesn't bother herself with girlish minority crap, because there is no time for that now in this chaos. I think that is very authentic. Also that she does her decisions even though she doesn't like them and they might destroy her - this sounds clichée, but with Paivi this seems real. She uses her brain before making up her mind about something (or her visions).
I am curious about the other characters. Torsten already got a bigger role during this book. What about the rest? I am really curious about Christian. I wonder what his part will be in all this. Only the supporting good friend or is he going to go badass as well at some point and kick the shit out of the ATC?
4 stars, even though I loved it. But it was smply too short.
This series is essentially a teenage version of the TV show Heroes (of which I was a fan). I liked the second book better because pacing was smoother, and there was less high school silliness. (This is also good since I had to pay for book 2, while book 1 is a Kindle freebie.) Paivi is a likable heroine, but I wish there were another female in her crew. And she and her brother talk and behave as if they're older than 14 and 13; the romance might be more enjoyable, too, if she and her love interest were a couple years older.
Finished this last night just a little before midnight. I'll go with another 3.5 stars. I see some people have stated that they thought this one was slow and that nothing happens. I don't think that at all. This book is about about Paivi going on a journey to prepare to fight the bad guy. You still get a little of the bad guys point of view as well. WARNING ABOUT THIS BOOK: It literally ends on a cliffhanger right when she is about to put her plan into action to fight the bad guy. IF YOU READ THIS BOOK, YOU MIGHT WANT TO HAVE #3 HANDY TO IMMEDIATELY START IT AFTER FINISHING THIS ONE.
This book was not as good as the first, in my opinion, but still worth reading. I do think the story takes a turn that is very 'drastic' and almost merges into a bit of sci-fi that doesn't go as well with the feel of the first book. However, the story held my attention and I look forward to the third book.
I loved this second book in the Into the Shadows Trilogy. I could not put it down. I loved how the characters grew and cannot wait until the next one comes out. Hopefully very soon!
