It was supposed be a fun competition for bragging rights among the best Indie Horror authors today. And it was until the votes didn't go the way one reader wanted.
Follow this fan as he travels across America in this humerous story of murder and vengeance.
He will stop at nothing to right the wrongs, as he sees them.
If you’ve been reading the brawl books (or even if you haven't), don’t sleep on this unofficial companion. Blood Brawl by Derek Thomas actually takes place just after last year’s brawl and Derek is not happy that his favorite authors didn’t make it past the first round. He is so upset, in fact, he has decided to exact his revenge on the authors who eliminated his favorites.
But be warned. The names were not changed. The innocent were not protected, as he travels the country to take out the competition. This book is hilarious and brutal at the same time and if you’re familiar with the Books of Horror group on Facebook, then you will surely be familiar with many of the characters in this quick read.
I absolutely love that the Indie Community inspires people to write. Derek is one of my favourite people and I couldn't wait to dive into his debut novella. Based on the BoH Brawl, this was so much fun, the most fun I've had with a book for a while. This is like one giant roast aimed at the authors in the brawl,so if you've enjoyed their personal diss videos, you're gonna love this book! (Poor Carver though! 😲😂)
Also, if you know Derek, you'll know he loves his food, and his passion for delicious meals shines through brilliantly, I have never known a book to make me so hungry! 😂 The kills are inventive and very personal to each author and their brawl books. I like that this is written from the author’s POV and you can tell right from the off that it's going to be a fun time. Derek’s narration is easy going, fun and fluid and makes this an addictive, one-sitting read.
When the voting doesn't go as well as Derek would have liked in the BoH Indie Brawl, he downs a few whiskeys, and then determines to do everything he can to put things right, for HIS authors to get the recognition they deserve!
His meticulous planning and a rather special disguise kicks off his campaign and it seems to pay off. All too easily though? Along the way he gains an unexpected yet willing accomplice, who has a very familiar face, and it turns out they make a great team! Together they will get justice for their authors, whatever it takes….
When I saw the book in the Books of Horror group, I knew I needed to pick it up. This is a dark comedy horror that ends up being a fun read. It shows how close the indie community is. Every author in the book was good sports as they were killed off in the book. The roasts toward the different authors were comedy gold.
It's a light-hearted horror book that is all in good fun. With all the dark stories I've been reading, this was a welcomed change. I couldn't stop laughing at certain scenes. A great book for comedy horror fans and those who are active in the Books of Horror group. Give this a read, it's not too long and you'll be laughing soon enough. I can promise you that!
I struggled big time reading this. I don't know if it's the fact that I've met many of the people in this book or if I'm reading this at a bad time, but I just felt so awkward throughout the book.
The humour fell flat for me; this particular style just isn't in line with my style of humour. Reading about a guy in a bear suit hiding in the women's bathroom listening to someone I've met pee in the next stall over or a religious man being assaulted with silicone/rubber toys (among other things in the story) just didn't sit well with me.
While I can definitely see how a lot of people would enjoy this, I just didn't get on with it. I wasn't the right audience for this book.

In this book, a horror fan vows to get revenge for his favorite authors who lost a brawl competition by whatever means necessary.
This was a fun book with plenty of familiar faces in the indie horror community. Members of the Books of Horror facebook group will love this clever little adventure.
Blood Brawl is easy to read in one setting. If you’re in the mood for a lighthearted horror novella with some laughs, you won’t be disappointed!
Blood Brawl by Derek Thomas Author is a fun, yet horrifying love letter to the Books of Horror community. Our main character is guilt ridden after his favorite authors lose the 2023 brawl, and nothing but blood-soaked vengeance will assuage his soul. What follows is a well-written horror debut infused with bits of comedy and most importantly...tacos. Strap in, this novella is a wild ride! Great joh on the debut Derek!
This was a fun little look into a deranged BOH fan’s obsession with HIS authors being overlooked or beat in the horror brawl by other authors. I felt myself drawn into the adventure these two main characters take in setting wrongs right their own twisted way. If you’re a Books of Horror Facebook member, you’re going to enjoy this tale of retribution.
This novella is such a treat for anyone that is part of the indie horror community. Derek crafts a wonderfully vicious Bonnie and Clyde tale of cross-country revenge. It was gruesome and hilarious.
This book will hit you like the smell of a dumpster on a hot Texas summer day. And that’s a compliment! What an engrossing (and gross), surprising, and fantastically FUN story. And I’m not even a part of the BoH! Anyone can come along for this wild revenge ride.
This book had my kidneys hurting from laughing so hard. I absolutely loved it. This years Brawl is going to be stellar and bloody as heck. So many books are brilliant. It's a lot tougher. This year

Derek is mad. He ran 3 discussion groups for the 2023 Books of Horror Indie Brawl, and every single one of his authors got knocked out in the first round. He won't stand for this. He decides to go after the three authors who moved on in the competition, and he's out for blood. More than blood. He's out to end their lives.
This book was such a wild and fun ride! It was hilarious and filled with authors, members, and inside jokes from the group. I read it in pretty much one sitting due to a power outage (and thankfully a fully charged kindle), but I would have read it in one day even with electricity available.
I'm not sure how many discussion groups he's in charge of this year, but depending on how things go, some authors might need to watch out next year. You might be next. 🤣
Man did I giggle throughout this little gem. I loved how the author took the Mickie out of everyone but in a positive way ( well maybe not Gage). I'm so glad Carver didn't get it the way I thought he was gunna. If anything I now want to read the books mentioned in this story.
Bravo Derek Thomas, this story is awesome fun! I’d miss these guys that’s for sure. Revenge can be sweet, you’re brutal. Thinking I need a physical signed copy now!
“Take me with you.” Well, friends, those words were quite literally uttered by your friendly little reviewer, Shannon Marie (aka, ReadingIsBetterThanPeopling). When Derek asked me if he could put both me and my son in his debut novel, I was beyond honored; I had no idea I was about to embark on a bloody cross-country road trip as his sidekick.
I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face when I read this one… As an active member of Books of Horror, a fan of the Brawl and a huge supporter of Indie Authors in our little community, this was a twisted homage to some of our greats. A twisted Bonnie & Clyde revenge trip for the ages, that highlights fantastic kills intertwined with a horror-filled, darkly comedic thrill ride.
For his first novel, our dear author impressively delivers a tight and fast-moving narrative that hooked me in from the first page. He captured the essence of every character, me included, with a deft-hand and with the utmost respect for the real-life humans that inspired this story. Oh, and my outfit, that one outfit... that’s all I will say.
“I had a blast. Let’s do it again sometime” Derek was prophetic when he wrote that I said that… I am still thinking that. I cannot wait to see what he comes up with next!
Check out his debut novel and buckle up for the trip of a lifetime.
Blood Brawl by Derek Thomas should be required reading for members of the Books of Horror group on Facebook. It's the perfect example of the way this group doesn't take itself too seriously, while simultaneously being very serious about horror! Derek's debut is a well written, hilariously gory tale all about my favorite part of the BOH group, the Indie Horror Brawl.
The MC is a huge part of the Indie Horror community. When three of his favorite author buddies get eliminated in the first round of the Brawl, he feels he has no choice but to enact revenge. Comically gruesome deaths are in store for the authors that had the audacity to get more votes than his friends Candace Nola, Jay Bower and Megan Stockton. I understand the problem, these are three of my favorites too!
Derek held nothing back in creating some of the most inventive kill scenes ever. Curbing the depraved nature of the kills is a lighthearted nod to the books that the offending authors wrote, and the books they took down. Brialliantly done!
I highly recommend this fun tale, especially for fans of the Books of Horror Indie Brawl!
A fun and gruesome read. I loved it! Highly recommended for members of the Books of Horror Facebook group and fans of the Indie Horror Brawl that it conducts. While I expected and enjoyed the horror and humour I was surprised by the saddness I felt for the murdered authors. Although it is obviously fiction the use of actual authors names made it feel surprisingly "real".
If you belong to BoH and know anything about the Indie Horror Brawl, you’ve got to check this story out! Take an insane and bloody trip through the mind of a pissed off fan of some of the losers in the brawl as he exacts his often hilarious revenge on those who beat HIS authors. And bring snacks… this book will make you hungry!
This meta horror comedy gem is a lot of fun! I don't think you HAVE to be a member of the Books of Horror Facebook group to enjoy the crazy ride, but knowing what the Indie Brawl is all about, who all of the real life authors who appear in the book are, and getting all of the inside jokes certainly enhances the experience. I love the fact that Derek doesn't take himself (or anybody else) too seriously, and that there are no sacred cows - everybody's fair game! The authors are all such good sports to agree to go down in such inventive, depraved, and blood soaked scenarios!
To set the stage, the story starts at the conclusion of the maiden Indie Brawl in 2023. The Brawl pitted 32 indie horror books (nominated and voted in by the Books of Horror Facebook members) against each other in bracket style combat until there was only one left standing, The Exorcist's House by Nick Roberts. Our MC Derek ran discussion groups for three authors knocked out in the first round. He feels guilty. He feels like he let them down. He thinks they deserve better. This slight to his favorites will not stand! He comes up with a devious plan to avenge this wrong!
Told in an engaging conversational style, it had lots of unexpected, comically demented, and ill-advised shenanigans along the way. Derek has an excellent grasp of the indie horror community and puts it to great use. He's like the Easter Bunny with all the eggs he drops into super inventive kill methods.
And if you know Derek at all, you know that there were tacos along the way. Plus a bunch his other foodie favorites - I probably would have put on ten pounds from how hungry he made me if the gory bits didn't simultaneously make me want to heave.
Bottom line, if you love a good crazed-fan's-righteous-outrage-evolving-into-revenge story, you'll have fun with this one.
