Broken Skies: Horizon's End Book 1:

Rate this book
A cataclysmic disaster. A family separated by a thousand miles. One chance to make it home. Failure is not an option.

Brought to you by the #1 best-selling - and most prolific - post-apocalyptic author Mike Kraus, writing with acclaimed author Justin Bell, Horizon's End is a gripping tale of survival, camaraderie and good versus evil in the shadow of a devastating natural disaster.

Across the country, a mysterious plague sweeps through both salt and fresh water, killing anyone - animals and humans alike - unfortunate enough to be in its vicinity. Relentless as it multiplies, all natural and man-made offenses and defenses against it are useless, and millions die in the first twenty-four hours alone.

Fishing off the coast of Massachusetts when disaster strikes, Mason Becker barely manages to get his boat ashore, and discovers to his horror that he and his family are some of the only survivors in his small town.

A thousand miles away in Seattle, Shannon Becker's business conference turns to chaos when thousands begin dropping dead in the city. As pandemonium breaks out, her ability to make snap decisions will be put to the test, and her ability to return to her husband and children is not guaranteed.

Great apocalyptic thriller!

Broken Skies is jam-packed with action, danger and drama. The main characters are mainly likable and relatable (there always has to be bad guys in an apocalypse). There was a little too many details for my personal preference but I enjoyed the story very much.

With stories about algae-bloom being of concern in the news, this is interesting. However, what is the explanation as to why this deadly algae/cyano-bacteria suddenly starts killing everywhere? Most of these stories end up with a vengeful gang leader or a vengeful cop and this had the latter. Did not make a lot of sense to me as there was enough suspense without that. I will likely continue because I'm hoping for a rational explanation about what (and, perhaps, who) caused all of this.

I did really enjoy this story! Something a little different for a post apocalyptic series, which is great! Good idea, great levels of tension, energy & pace, I like the main characters & found it a really good read to escape into for a while! I do recommend & will look forward to seeing where this will go!

Broken Skies - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

Justin Bell and Mike Kraus open a brand-new series, Horizon's End, with the riveting, post-Apocalyptic-survival thriller Broken Skies.

A global chain of catastrophic destruction is caused by a poisonous water-borne algae and the divided Becker family -
businesswoman/Mom Shannon in Seattle, trawler-boat captain/Dad, Mason, at sea near Massachusetts and his sister, Jodie, home-schooling their two daughters Dorey and Lilah at the nearby family home at Harbor's End - undergo life-changing events en route to hoped-for reunion.

Read Broken Skies today to find out what nemesis dogs Mason's trail, and whether Shannon and her injured friend Louise can survive, to join their loved ones ...and tell all your friends!

You'll be glad you live inland!

Bell and Kraus have come up with another extinction level event, this time virulent cyanobacteria killing people who come in contact with it, or even breathe the fumes. The Becker family is separated on opposite ends of the nation when the mayhem ensues, and with communication nearly nonexistent, are unaware of the well-being of the others. Add in an incompetent government response and a demented exe cop to keep the reader on their toes, and you have the outline of the insanity that is Broken Skies. Saying more will give spoilers, so ilk lace it at Read This Book, an extremely promising opening chapter to a new series!

Ocean revolts with an algae attack on & in water

FASCINATING! What a roller coaster ride as an Algae attack from the ocean multiplies, hits every shore, invading all water sources it comes into contact with, content & fumes deadly. The storyline focuses on one family, separated by business travel by the mom, the dad out on a fishing boat, the adult sister taking care of the brother’s kids. All the people they encounter, their overlapping stories, the danger, some evil, some unfortunate circumstances, are suspenseful, thrilling encounters.

Good start

I like the trend this Book 1 has taken. A whole new trend, away from EMPs but still devastating events. Parents faced with this unfortunate situation, while they were in different places, having to make their own way home to their family, and facing dangerous scenarios. I'm anxious to read Book 2.

Great start to this series, it had me hooked from the beginning. A really interesting storyline of a green algae killing millions of people. Starting in the ocean and spreading to all waterways. Has you wondering how survivors are going to battle this deadly threat. Really looking forward to more of this story and love our main characters.

good post apocalyptic

I read a lot. I read a fair amount of post apocalyptic books and when I first picked up the book I tried to figure out how this author would make it just different enough to keep my attention. Well they did. It was definitely a roller coaster ride. I will definitely be looking for the next book in this series.

2.5 stars. I had flown through another Mike Kraus series, but this one fell flat for me. The mysterious algae instantly spread all over the world, which kills on contact did not seem plausible. I also found the addition of the demented police officer somewhat ridiculous. I will not read further in this series.

What an amazing story full of danger, how will anyone survive this new disaster. Finding out that you and your family are possibly the only survivors in that area is totally scary. Will the waters be able to be saved as well. Absolutely devastating. Can’t wait for the next book.

Algae and death

This series starts off with action and it never stops. The major characters are well developed and the story off to a great start. Only what is expected of these authors.

Very invigorating

Two ordinary people put in an impossible situation. Its their reactions that make the book so interesting. Too bad you have to read the next books for an outcome. Interesting premise. A much different apocalypse than what we are used to reading.

WOW!

Interesting plot. Most Post-apocalyptic novels center on EMPs. This one is on dangerous algae. An interesting change of thought. A bit slow to start, but picked up speed.

Horizon's End series is proving to be a non-stop page turner. I finished Broken Skies and well into book 2 End of Dawn. The character development has made this family's struggle real in the face of a plausible world changing menace. I read this genre in between non-fiction, biographies and military history as an exercise of "what would I do" in the given scenario. This series I fall right in with this family's reckoning with changes that in reality I hope will never happen.

I really enjoyed this book. One member of the family fighting to get home while the rest of the family are fighting to survive at home.
