Wow that was good 🤯
I had such high expectation for this book and it absolutely did not disappoint. I was expecting angst, pinning, spooky vibe, rivalry and it went beyond all of those!

I literally devoured this book in less than 24h
It’s perfect if you are looking for a fall read with an absolutely tortured but endlessly sweet MMC and a fierce and lovable FMC
While the romance is a big chunk of the book it’s also well balanced by a compelling plot, a dash of somewhat dark humour and incredible plot twists
I was also so happy to see ace representation as an ace myself! I particularly loved how their relationship was handled in regard to this.
This is a full standalone novel, and while it is the second book in the series, it can easily be enjoyed on its own. In fact I have not read the first book yet but I’m now running to do so

I loved this so much and feel so lucky that I was able to read an advanced copy! I couldn’t stop reading. I was SO curious to find out the backstory between Atticus and Maddox and what happened between them all those years ago that caused them to have a falling out with one another.
The tension was so good. The angst. The slow burn as the two main characters got to know one another all over again. I was so intrigued to know Atticus’s secret and why he couldn’t tell Maddox the reason for his withdrawal from their friendship.
I appreciated the ADHD representation in the story. Like Maddox, I’ve struggled with it to the point of forgetting important tasks , or forgetting to finish things, so it was nice to see the authenticity in Maddox’s struggle as others perceived her as flighty or day-dreamy.
I also appreciated that Atticus and Maddox took things slow, and that Maddox’s character identifies as demi. Seeing the character express that she is unable to feel attracted to someone unless she loves them was just another dose of welcomed realness among the fantasy elements of the story.
The world building is incredible, and I really hope to see more of these characters in future books!

Once I started I could not put this down. It's a haunting journey of secrets, unrequited love, rivalry and redemption.
The tension is so intense between Maddox and Atticus you can't help but be invested, and I loved the touches of humour and spice. As the story unveils you learn more about their history as childhood friends, academic rivals and family secrets, through the dual POV and flashbacks.
After years apart they are drawn back together and forced to work and live side by side to discover the secrets of a cursed book. The more they dig the more dangerous it becomes as they understand what they might unleash, even with their Necromancy powers and an exorcist on hand.
I loved the character development and the bond they shared, it had elements of obsession and infatuation powered by the darkness they shared, but overall i adored their chemistry, angst and devotion.
It had a great gothic vibe, haunting worldbuilding and devastating revelations. This is a dark and charming standalone you need to read.

I loved Maddox so much she stubborn one for sure and she truly cared and loved Atticus he definitely felt he didn't deserve her or her love but he had no choice cause no one decides for Maddox
There friendship then the love they have for eachother no one could ever compare they didn't want no one else
I didn't like Atticus grandmother ugh she evil woman I absolutely love Daphne she strong and stubborn woman as much as her sister but the love the whole family have ekth eachother is beautiful

DANG, Vermilion! You took that first book and turned things up to eleven with this one! Talk about cranking up the intensity! Maddox Abernathy, a necromancer with a family of druids, gets drawn back into the world of magical academia by her academic rival and former friend, Atticus Blackwell. What starts as a reluctant partnership quickly evolves into something much deeper, and honestly, I'm obsessed with these two.
Now this, THIS is how you do obsessive relationships that actually turn into something incredibly healthy. The chemistry between Maddox and Atticus is off the charts. Their early interactions are full of delicious tension as they circle each other, full of history and unspoken feelings. And then, when things start to escalate, the intensity is almost overwhelming—in the best way possible. The slow-burn romance is so well done, with a perfect balance. I also loved the demi representation, which added a deeper layer to their relationship. It felt organic, allowing them to take their time to rebuild their connection, making the payoff even more satisfying.
I was dying to know what secret Atticus was hiding and why he distanced himself from Maddox in the past. The tension between them was pitch-perfect, keeping me glued to the page as they slowly unpacked their history and reconnected. And once the truth comes out? Let’s just say the payoff is worth the wait.
Baine doesn’t just deliver on the romance, though. The world-building is immersive and charming. I love seeing it expand with each of these books. I love the characters, especially how Maddox struggles with identity and family; it is so amazing the pressures that we put on ourselves even without external pressures. The plot is compelling, too. It’s packed with twists, dark humor, and a healthy dose of mystery surrounding Atticus and his own family. I love the continued use of animal companions. I was especially happy to see cameos from characters in the first book.

Oh my god, I loved this book so much!!! The world! The characters! The dark magic! The TENSION!
I was so invested in this story, I literally couldn’t stop thinking about it. I desperately needed to know what was going to happen next and the history of the characters' connection! I truly couldn’t tell what was coming next and I was so shocked and enthralled by the reveals within this story!
I loved the dual POV and the back-and-forth between the present and moments in the past. This format made the story as amazing as it was - giving the reader glimpses of every important moment.
The world-building? *chefs kiss* I could read another book just with details of this world because it was so fascinating.
Maddox and Atticus are some of my favorite characters ever; they have incredible chemistry and the banter is so good. The absolute devotion and torture and angst between them is so perfect! Atticus is everything and I am obsessed with him.
Also, Lochlan? We love him! He was so much more dynamic and lovable than I originally expected and everything he did endeared me to him.
Honestly, Vermillion H. Blaine is an insanely talented author - beyond the characters and the world, her writing is just so good. I can’t say enough good things about it intelligently because I just loved this book so, so much.

Wow, wow, wow 🤯 what an amazing read. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. There was so much going on but none of it felt overwhelming or confusing or just too much. It was so beautifully written with such clear and conscise imagery of the characters and their surroundings. I absolutely loved the main characters and wish this was not a standalone 😆 but the ending was action packed and thrilling and perfection. The whole book was an emotional rollercoaster and you really do feel for the characters, my heart was ripped out of my chest a few times but also felt like it was going to burst with joy for the characters at certain points. The book is also filled with suspense and intrigue which really keeps you thinking and trying to guess what will happen. I hated having to put the book down apart from when I was getting towards the end as I didn't want it to end but knew it had to and I wasn't sure where it was going as the way the author has written the book 🙈😆

I absolutely loved this book! It gave me major Sirius Black and Hogwarts vibes, and I was here for it! The mix of Tim Burton’s whimsical creepiness, especially toward the end, made this an enchanting read, perfect for the spooky season.
What I loved most were the unexpected twists that genuinely surprised me. The heartache in their relationship felt so real; I found myself crying at times. Maddox’s chaotic yet loving family brought a vibrant energy to the story, while Atticus’s hidden secrets added depth and intrigue.

This book focuses on a trio (Atticus, Maddox, and Lochlan) as they try to decode a page from The Tome of the Undying and I loved seeing their dynamic. I came for the necromancers and fell in love with the exorcist, what can I say?

A spooky must read!! It had necromancer gore, great plot and I am absolutely smitten with the characters. I laughed so hard on the witty banter, some leg kicks were involved. Can we also get a honorable mention for the very vile-mouthed and very pregnant older sister? She was GOLD!
The story keeps you engaged and never a dull moment. Dark academia vibes with an older cast, an even darker secret and the darkest undead magic.

I loved every single page of this book! Perfect chemistry between Maddox & Atticus, a compelling storyline, dark magic, humour, and spice. What more could I POSSIBLY ask for?!
Seriously I couldn't put this down. I was DYING for the tension between our MC's it was @ perfect.
I also loved every character in this book, not only our MC's but I loved the side characters who had such great personality.
I don't even know what else to say, I just really loved this book it's hard to put into words. The pacing, the characters, the magic. Every part of it was great.
If I can leave you with one promise in reading this it will be this. You will LOVE Atticus Blackwell.

She’s done it again!!
A captivating story from start to finish. Our badass FMC always trying to do the right thing. Our sour patch kid MMC thinking he knows what’s best. & the family? Oh man, this story was incredible.
I cannot WAIT to see where Vermilion takes this world next!!

Baine is Quickly Becoming an Auto-Buy Author!
I absolutely loooved his book and am already so excited for a reread after the revelations at the end (no spoilers); now that I know what I know, it’s going to be a whole different, deeper love story!
Atticus and Maddox are two incredibly flawed individuals whose spiky edges fit perfectly together. The story is dark, and gothic, and the two treat each other spitefully in some instances, but at all times you know that they’re doing it for some twisted yet lovely reason. You never stop rooting for them!
And the end? Ah it brought such happy tears to my eyes - they both deserve exactly what they get. I cannot wait to hear if we’re going to get a third instalment of Haunted Creatures, Haunted Places but I’m petitioning for Lochlan to get his HEA!

this was definitely an interesting book. it was the first time i read something by this author and though i did end up enjoying it, i do have some mixed feelings towards the overall tone of the story.
i think the plotline was fine, quite simple, but still engaging. i would like to know a little more about the academy of the dead itself though, as i think the concept is compelling. i really like dark academia and despite this book not exactly giving this vibe (so don’t get excited), i do think it’s promising and could potentially be developed into something much more fascinating and complex.
i also liked the characters, although at the same time, i didn’t really feel a deep connection to either of them. i found them sympethetic, i enjoyed reading from their perspectives and i wished them well. i did not love them though, i also don’t think they were the most multi-dimensional and intriguing, but they were likeable enough for me to not have any issues with reading experience as a whole.
romance was also fine, the chemistry was there, although it wasn’t really that intense of fierce. i think a good part of me enjoying it was the fact that the mmc was the one who was more open about his feelings. i just like my men to be a little pathetic. like the rest of the story, the romance wasn’t the best one i’ve read, but it was still fun and entertaining, and i rooted for the characters to get together.
i cannot exactly pinpoint the issue why i overall didn’t love this story. one thing is that i genuinely think it’s just not the most original or absorbing, but my bigger issue was with the writing. the style of this author is just very strange. i don’t necessary mean it in a bad way, it was just very specific and sometimes made me a little confused. it’s also very difficult to explain what exactly i mean by describing it as strange, as there is no particular element i can distinguish, but the overall style was just unlike everything i’ve read before. it didn’t feel smooth and sometimes it was a little shallow.
with that said, i still enjoyed this book quite a bit. i do think it’s precisely what i imagine a three star story is.
also, a quick disclaimer for those who love rivals to lovers trope - it’s not exactly that. the element of rivalry is there, but it is VERY small. it’s mostly mentions of them competing with each other when they were in the academy.

Baine has become a must-read author for me. I begged her for an advanced copy and stayed up until 3am to read it. OBSESSED! The writing is succinct but lush - perfection. It was all dark academia, angst, and gothic vibes. The story is unique and I didn't see the plot twists coming!

Maddox (Maddie) - I didn't expect the heroine to be ADHD and demi, so that was a pleasant surprise. Growing up, she never felt like she fit in, and that's such a common experience for us neuro-spicy girls, it was therapeutic to read her journey.
Both characters had a lot of depth and growth, and they made sense. Their dynamic felt different from the average enemies/rivals-to-lovers. There was push and pull, and lots of overthinking, which fits these two nerds.
Favorite quote... "If I thought distance could end this horrible longing, then I would gladly reside in hell to save you my unwanted infatuation."

The storyline really does suck you in because I had a hard time putting this book down!
MFC Maddox Abernathy is a necromancer💀 and her family is all green witches. She attends a college for necromancers “The Academy of the Dead”
She returns home because of burnout. But her nemesis/secret crush “Atticus Blackwell “ invites her back to help him find a missing page of “The Book of the Dead ”
MMC “Atticus Blackwell “ also a necromancer 💀is smitten with Maddie but he keeps pushing her away because he’s hiding a deep dark secret about himself . Loved how the author wrote Atticus! He was this grumpy ,dark mysterious character who I had a love/ hate relationship at first, but in the end his dark past/ secrets are revealed. Which then made me fall in love with his character!
Loved the magic system and the “swords/weapons” that communicate with their owners telepathically.
Also loved Maddox’s large family of witches, especially her grandfather Colter Abernathy! There were so many great characters in this book!
Overall I really enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it!!
It would make a great read for spooky season and you should definitely add to your TBR! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

The Academy of the Dead is part of an interconnected series. It is a standalone, so you don't need to read the first book, The Fey Hotel, but I highly recommend it because it is so good. The Fey Hotel is Baine’s debut and is available on Kindle Unlimited! The Academy of the Dead is a paranormal romance (with some spice) with roughly 480 pages on Kindle.
I love how the book takes place in a world where humans, witches, and other paranormal creatures live and work together. This dual POV follows Maddox and Atticus who attend the Academy of the Dead because they are necromancers. I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of this storyline. Why did Atticus betray Maddox while they were attending school? What daily medicine does Atticus take and why? Baine uses flashbacks throughout the book to tell something that happened earlier in both MC’s lives. I would describe the romance between the MCs as push and pull rather than slow burn but when they finally connect, it is so darn good. They are the sweetest. I was screaming “finally!!” 🤣
I loved so many of the side characters. I really enjoyed Giles, Daphne and Lochlan. Lochlan is going to be featured in Baine’s next dark urban fantasy. And can I just say how much I loved the Abernathy family! ❤️ I liked the cat familiar, but I really wanted to know where it came from and why it was loyal off the bat. 🐈
This book gave total fall vibes 🍂!

This was such a cute friends to rivals to lovers story. I was afraid that this story wouldn't be romantic enough for me (it sounded like a paranormal story with a romantic side plot) but it was definitely a romance first. From the very beginning! I was sucked into it and couldn't stop!
The story reminded me of "Nocticadia" but with less smut. And less dark. It had necromancers, fey, witches, lichs and two amazing main characters. I always dig a MMC who's so in love with the FMC that it borders on "pathetic". Not in a negative way, he's just that in love with Maddox. 🤭
I only have two complaints:
1. the ending wasn't very good, the solution to the problem felt cheap and I disliked that Atticus wasn't really present in the last quarter of the book and it felt rushed and boring at the same time. The last chapter was very cute though!
2. Of course Maddox was a virgin (she never felt a sexual attraction to anyone but Atticus, she never even kissed anyone else!) and Atticus had plenty of experience even though that didn't even make sense for his character. He hates touch, he's self conscious, he never loved anyone else but hey, he always thought of Maddox even when he was with other woman. 🙄 Did he go to prostitutes? He doesn't have any friends, I doubt he had a relationship. How did he find someone to have sex with!? Why not make him a virgin too? He can be dirty talker while being a virgin.
But overall this was a very cute and sweet story! It wasn't as dark as expected, the love story wasn't dark at all, and even the backstory wasn't that dark.

It is dual POV with some flashbacks to the past. It follows Atticus a necromancer from a well-known necromancer family and Maddox the only necromaner in her green witch family full of healers. Maddox has always feel like an outcast in her family. Because all other bring things to life, while she does the opposite.
Through flashbacks we learn that necromancers go to the Academy of the Dead for 5 years and that's where Maddox and Atticus meet. They end up having an uncommon friendship, but Atticus breaks her trust and they have a fall out.
The story is written 5 years after graduation. Atticus finds Maddox again to convince her to work on a dangerous project together and while under a spell confesses his love to her. Eventually she agrees and they start working together at the Academy of the dead.

I’d like to extend a huge thank you to the author for allowing me to read this before release! What an absolute pleasure it was!!!
After tearing through this interconnected series’ first standalone, The Fey Hotel, I couldn’t wait to dive into The Academy of the Dead. I went in with extremely high expectations and they were not disappointed in the least. In fact, they were exceeded. I cannot overstate how much I have enjoyed Baine’s knack for writing strong, independent, sassy FMCs and broody, mysterious MMCs. I loved the unfolding timeline of Atticus and Maddox’s past relationship and secrets as they came together again after years apart. I craved each twist and mystery solved as they worked to uncover any secrets contained on a recently discovered page of the missing Tome of the Undying and every bit of mayhem that ensued as a result. (Not to mention the tension and spice!) It was amazing to see more of the Abernathy family and the dedication of their close-knit family when they gathered to support and defend Maddox in her time of need and triumph. Bonus: The adorable epilogue was one of my favorite endings I’ve read. Absolute *chef’s kiss* and I can’t wait for the next standalone!

As a fellow Shelley fan, I fell in love with Maddox and Atticus. From the jump you know there’s more to their story and the tension is palpable. There’s no waffling back and forth with these two, their intent is clear from the beginning. They grow so much as characters against this perfectly gothic backdrop, what more could I ask for honestly?
Fans of gothic romance, Lisa Frankenstein, and all things magic: this one is for you. I can’t wait to read this again. Definitely one of my top books of the year.

New obsession alert!! This gothic dark academia romance is PERFECT for spooky season. The world building is beautifully haunting with the creepy mansion, a cursed tome, possessions, UNDEAD CAT and SENTIENT SWORD. And a sword that turns into a snake?! Seriously add this to your TBR.
The I-am-so-disgustingly-in-love-with-you vibes are so freaking delicious. Atticus fell first and harder for Maddox and I love their slow burn push and pull romance with second chance. I adored the Abernathy family and their unconditional love for not just Maddox but Atticus too. There was so much healing love.

A stand-alone romantasy set around an academy for all students born with the power of necromancy, this novel follows Maddox and Atticus as they try to translate a piece of the lost book of the dead. Maddox has not been back to the school since graduating at the top of her class, partly due to burnout, and partly due to bullying and the loss of her friendship with Atticus. Atticus, on the other hand, wants her to come back but is still hiding his secrets. There is lots of pining, "he fell first", enemies to lovers, and forbidden love vibes as they work on this project together.
I thought the world in this book was really fun, and felt for Maddox as the only one in her family with her type of magic. Atticus has all the tragic back story and brooding, self-sacrificing moments that make him a perfect dark hero. I thought the world in this book was really fun, and felt for Maddox as the only one in her family with her type of magic. Atticus has all the tragic back story and brooding, self-sacrificing moments that make him a perfect dark hero. Do you ever wish a standalone wasn’t a standalone? That is how I feel about The Academy of the Dead. This book was a highly anticipated read for me. I started it as soon as I was able to and had a hard time putting it down. This book made me feel so good. The main characters feel like friends that you just want to kiss already. I loved the little details in the book like that Maddox has a sword made by the Fae that of course Atticus hates. And that Atticus calls her Maddie sometimes because her family does. And some other spoiler-y ones. You will enjoy this book if you enjoy friends to rivals to lovers, magical world building, and dark, but cozy settings. I would highly recommend adding this to your spooky reads for this spooky season!!
