Hobson’s Point stands independent and is safe from the machinations of the Sects for now.
An unexpected call for aid takes Verdan into the territory of the Kranjir, a land steeped in the mysteries he seeks to unravel and the birthplace of his apprentice, Dirk.
Betrayal, foul monsters and ancient secrets might yet spell doom for not just Verdan’s allies but the entirety of the north.
When suspicion abounds, the honour of the Clans will be pushed to its breaking point.
A really fun third book that does a good job of jumpstarting a new overarching plot arc.
Verdan has largely stabilized his new home and he wants to get down to magical research and discovery. However, the arrival of northern traders (the ancestral people of Verdan’s apprentice), sends Verdan north to a new culture besieged by dark forces. I have really enjoyed all three books. It’s great classic fantasy with elements of progression fantasy in the background (Wizards cumulatively form energy gathering spirals in their core, something Verdan is trying to rebuild for himself).
The story is great, I love the world building and the history we are seeing, though wizard Blacke bugs me sometimes. The real weakness of the story is the writing. Wrong words used, or just plain weird words, or sentance or paragraph throughout, incorrect euphemisms, paragraphs that have missing sentences, or the wrong sentence pasted in. It's all very poorly edited. I'm thinking maybe AI was used for part of it, because some bits just come out weird. All that aside, it's s great story!!!
I like the story and the world. The MC is way too accommodating. He risks his life and more or less does whatever anyone asks without extracting any concessions. He just goes with the flow. This story would become excellent if he had a bit more backbone and there was more contention.
Also the bad guys escape in three different instances. That’s really annoying and feels contrived.
A nice stroll through a land of limited means and true limits
Verdan is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. His limited ability and knowledge are a massive bonus in this series. I wasn't so sure in the beginning of the series, but I'm thrilled I kept reading this story. It feels like every character is fleshed out and capable of having their own respective stories. I can't wait for the next book in this series.
Better than book two, still not as good as book one!
This was alot of expose with the characters moving robotically through the story. The book lacked any real suspense, and the plot and world building was stale and rather predictable. I enjoy this series because the character is interesting in the world itself is okay but there's just no excitement to the read. It's a very forgettable story.
Another interesting book in this series, however I don’t particularly like the way the author constructs the big battles. They start off quite well, but he seems to get carried away resulting in too many last second, last vestiges of power moments. I don’t mind the occasional surviving by the ‘skin of your teeth’ moments, but not every battle. If possible I would have given 3.5 stars.
This story is not a typical progression fantasy novel, but rather it focuses on the group progression and the MC’s return to power and understanding of the new world around his new crew. I thought it started out a bit slow, but the action picked up enough to capture my attention! Please give this book a shot!
After abandoning this series when book 2 failed to improve on book 1's awful layout, prose, structure, and characters, I picked up book 3 after running out of other material and thought I'd see if anything had improved. I shouldn't have bothered.
Paragraph breaks are seemingly randomly distributed. Dialogue repeats what a character has already thought. Characters have thoughts that are emotions. Verdan continually -- for no reason other than plot -- puts off making decisions, and the reader is told each time like being bashed in the face with an enormous "this will be important" stick. We're continually told how people feel rather than them showing through their actions.
I’m really enjoying this series. The main character in interesting as well as the struggles he deals with on how best to share his knowledge. The pacing is good and I enjoyed the mixture of politics and action.
This is a great little series. If you are wondering if this book is as good as the first two, I would unequivocally say yes. We get a lot more teasers into the overarching plot, and good solid and very fun story just within this book.
I had a bit harder of a time staying interested in this installment of the story. But, I still enjoyed it enough to read the next one, even if I’m not super excited about it. 😁
I liked this one because the action was better and more interesting than politics and economics in a city. Liked the magic uses. Turns out he isn’t the last of his kind after all! There are bad wizards too.
This book has plenty of action.it has at times to much in-depth description of the action. I think the author should stop the series here. My two cents worth.
A bloody brilliant series! Great magic system and character development Can’t wait for the next book in the series! Fingers crossed it comes out soon as I can’t wait!
This series has been great. I love the characters and the story pulls you through and doesn't leave you hanging. I haven't read this much or this fast in a long time.
