Megan's world has shattered. The love of her life is gone, leaving her hollow and consumed by grief. In the midst of this despair, one venomous remark from Merlin—yes, that Merlin—sends her over the edge, pushing her into a reckless new purpose: bounty hunting across the Splinters of reality with her red dragon, Goch.
One target fuels her obsession: Mordred and his dragon. It's the only thing keeping her from drowning in sorrow. But the hunter’s guild has left Mordred’s bounty up for grabs, and it’s already claimed lives. Worse, as a realm walker, Mordred’s impossible to track across the splinters, driving Megan mad with frustration and leaving her too much time to think.
Out of options, she grudgingly teams up with Merlin. Powerful, legendary, and hard to ignore, he should be the perfect ally—except she loathes him with the fire of a million burning suns. Then Mordred makes a move, reaching out to both of them.
The hunt is back on, but Merlin’s shadowy past is catching up, turning an already dangerous mission into a deadly gamble. Can Megan capture Mordred, survive Merlin’s demons, and make it out alive? Or will her pursuit lead to her ultimate downfall?
Enjoy this urban fantasy adventure with an older heroine, a slow burn enemies to lovers romance, dragon riding, and tons of action!
Jilleen Dolbeare is the author of the Shadow Winged Chronicles, an urban fantasy series about a shape-shifting bush pilot in Alaska.
She loves riding horses, warm ocean beaches, and long walks in the mountains, none of which she can do in the Arctic, so she writes.
Her activities are riding her four-wheeler on cold ocean beaches (often frozen or covered with ice), and long walks to and from work when it’s 40 below—in the dark. She does keep her stakes sharp for those vamps that show up during the 67 days of night.
Jilleen lives with her husband and two hungry cats in Barrow, Alaska where she also discovered her love and admiration of the Inupiaq people and their folklore.
I’ve recently started reading this author’s solo works after reading the series she writes with another author. I read the prequel to this new series, and I was eager to read this. As this is a spinoff of another series, I think there are things I don’t know about but that didn’t keep me from enjoying this book. I feel so much for poor Megan having lost her husband, and she’s still grieving so much. I think the escapades she goes on help her cope. And what action-filled fun for us. I hope that she and Merlin can work out their differences, as I’m getting tired of their antagonistic attitudes towards each other. LOL! This is a well-written, interesting world, and I can’t wait to read more. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Borrowed Amulet is an urban fantasy with an older main character.
Recently widowed dragon rider Megan is a bounty hunter. Using fighting skills, magical weapons and her dragon, she travels across different worlds in search of wanted creatures and characters. In this tale she has reluctantly agreed to work with the wizard Merlin to find Mordred and his dragon who both have a high reward for their capture.
The scenes cross back and forth between the human world and many other lands called Splinter Realms that are reached by magical travel.
This story is interspersed with many names and characters from Arthurian legend; Megan’s own sword is the famous Excalibur. For those who particularly enjoy the myths surrounding Arthur, then this modern take might appeal.
Although this is the first book in the series, there are two other prequels which I believe might add vital details. On several occasions I felt that I was missing information, particularly with background detail that would have been useful to fill in some of the gaps.
Overall, I enjoyed the tale, but felt it was a little short on some of the background worldbuilding.
Holy Info dump, Batman. The information didn't trickle in, it drop kicked me WWE style. That first chapter really should have been split throughout the book, teasing the readers and encouraging us to continue forward to the get answers we desired. Instead we got a whole lot of telling without an inkling of showing.
Then the second chapter starts with:
"I was supposed to work the evening shift at the Splintered Haven Inn, my best friend's supernatural bed and breakfast. Luckily, after a few months of bounty hunting, I’d developed a pretty decent internal clock. It came in handy since time varied so greatly between the various splinters of reality. I knew I had a couple of hours, so Goch and I headed towards Brigid’s Faerie castle. Brigid, my bestie, was part Fae. Her great-grandfather was Lugh, the high king’s Pendragon or ultimate general. When Brigid married Gabe, Lugh had gifted them a castle near his own. It wasn’t a large castle, but it was impressive, nonetheless."
And on and on it goes. I don't even know where to start. We could have learned about the best friend when she showed up. Instead of telling us about her internal clock she could have noted about a specific feeling indicating it was close to a specific time. We could have gathered her friend was half fae by physical description, why do we need to know her lineage right now? It doesn't contribute much other than a poor way to tell us why she's important, I guess? There's so much more to say and that's just the first two paragraph of chapter 2. And it really doesn't get much better as we continue.
I give the author props for giving a shout-out to Patricia Briggs so at least I know MC has good tastes in books. But I can't get past that we're just given loads of information repeatedly without any background, investment or a reason to care.
Continuing forward with chapter 2, we learn that the MC’s best friend is being hunted by witches and her husband was kidnapped—but why? Why go through the effort? Why does the MC care so much? Why haven’t the witches just wiped them out instead of cutting off business? And, most importantly, why should I care? None of these questions get answered. Instead, the story rushes straight into the death of a loved one and the MC’s sudden hatred of Merlin.
But here’s the problem: I don’t care who Merlin is or what his role was in a battle I know nothing about. I barely know the main character herself. So why am I supposed to care about her enemy? The book skips over so much context, leaving me with more confusion than investment.
On top of that, I only found out after finishing the book that there are two prequels. But prequels are not a substitute for crucial information in the main story. A novel still needs to stand on its own and give the reader the essential details.
The worldbuilding is thin, the characters feel flat and uninteresting, and relying on major cliffhangers at the end comes across as lazy writing. A reader should feel compelled to continue because the story itself—or at the very least the main character—captures their interest and sustains their investment, not simply because of an artificial cliffhanger.
Overall I was not impressed with this book. I may give the author another try at some point but this one gets a 1 star.
What a fab book this is! What a buzz! A spinoff from the Splintered Magic series, Jill Dolbeare did herself justice in bringing us another fabulous read! This time, we get to see Megan in action, like yay! I loved Megan since meeting her in the previous series, her exuberance and excitement permeated throughout me, and seeing how devastated she was, how raw she was after losing Luke, tore me apart. Her struggles to keep herself compus mentus, to function, were so beautifully described by the author, so realistic. Sure, she has the support of her best friend Brigid and her very cool dragon friend, Goch but her pain is almost all encompassing, the depth almost insurmountable. The only thing keeping her sane is being active, being a full on Hunter, which she embraces wholeheartedly. And she's good at it too.... what she's not so good at, is keeping her loathing for Merlin under wraps, her disdain for him palpable. Heck, he DID say some awful things to her, he DOES act all superior, he DOES come across as a know it all.
However, not all one sees is as it is...and it couldn't be more true of Merlin. Ok, he IS rather arrogant but he's British after all! 🤣 I loved how Jill portrays his character, he's faliable, he errs. All the characters carry this touch of realism, they're illustrated like a painting, outlined and then filled in perfectly. So easy to understand their thoughts and feelings, so easy to feel for them and with them. I love that they're not perfect, hells bells, Megan knows she's unreasonable in her dislike of Merlin but she just can't help herself. The relationship, if one can call it that, between Megan and Merlin is volatile and complex but they have a bigger threat looming and need to rally together, work together, to apprehend Mordred. I love how distinct the characters are, Sorcha, Dana, Lugh, and the coolest dragons ever! Goch has really come into his own, he's no longer the teen dragon who's talent was to cause mayhem, he's grown into a fierce fighter. And gosh is Enfys delightful, her youthful enthusiasm brought a smile to my face.
Jill captured the myth and legend of Avalon and Arthur, making it her own, twisting and shaking it up, while at the same time keeping them true to the legend, just more personable and so so interesting! Loved it! So, character representation excellent, fabulous world building, where everything is crisp and vivid and the banter is awesome, fantastic humour that filtered throughout, awesome pacing, combined with the perfect amount of suspense, action and fun, all equates to great read ! Loved it! This book was a fantabulous read, off charts action that had my head spinning, especially the last few chapters, I felt as though I'd been thrust into a lightning bolt, good golly did it jolt me! Like NOOO! THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING! But it does and it did and my heart stopped pumping for a few seconds.. and I even adopted a new word! Ungaglinga, and this book IS gaglinga, it feels like home, comfortable, warm, fuzzy.
Welcome to the world of the “Splintered Realms”, part mundane, part Fae, and ALL adventure! Megan and her BFF Brigid live and work in Brigid’s magical B&B, the Secret Haven Inn, where guests from *every* walk of life can find a safe place to enjoy a relaxing vacation. Also, ix-nay on the eer-day unting-hay while certain shifters are in residence! Megan’s got a good thing going, she’s part of the magical community, she’s able to use her “borrowed magic” to kick butt and take names, and then, of course, there’s her dragon, Goch.
See, Megan’s a dragon rider, bounty hunter, AND front desk attendant. A girl can have hobbies, no? Much to Megan’s chagrin, Merlin (yes, THE Merlin) regularly shows up at the Inn, driving Megan absolutely bananas.
Megan’s been taking as many bounties as she can get, all while balancing the demands of her work and social life. But something’s off. Something needs to be dealt with. Mordred and his dragon are still in the wind. THE Mordred of Authurian fame. Not to mention that word’s come in that he may have teamed up with Morgan LeFae. Immortal sorcerer and sorceress hell-bent on dominating the Splinters. Easy-peasy, right? Now if only Merlin would lay off the shenanigans before Megan has to break his neck as a mercy to the world in general…
“Borrowed Amulet” is the first novel in the “Splintered Realms” series by Jilleen Dolbeare; as Realms is a spinoff series to her widely popular “Splintered Magic” series starring Brigid Donovan and is set shortly after the conclusion of Magic. It’s fun, imaginative, funny, and a thoroughly good read. The MC is a full-grown, middle-aged rockstar of a woman (not some wispy 19-something who’s been wielding the forces of nature since birth) who’s finding her way after losing her forever love. She’s snarky, grumpy, and WILL decapitate you with Excalibur! Enjoy this read, I definitely did! Absolutely 10/10
I received a free copy of this e-book set and am voluntarily leaving a review.
📚 Book Review 📚 Borrowed Amulet By Jilleen Dorbeard ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Borrowed Amulet is Book One in the Splintered Realms paranormal urban fantasy series. In this first book, we are introduced to Megan, a bounty hunter, and her red dragon, Goch—the duo hunt for the Bounty Hunter’s Guild, collecting bounty for wanted criminals. Megan’s ultimate goal is to capture her elusive nemesis, Mordred, and his evil dragon Dewi, and bring them to justice. To accomplish her goal, she must enlist the help of her allies, including one which Megan despised, the powerful magician Merlin, yes that Merlin. The two have a history, one in which during a battle with vampires. Luke, the love of Megan’s life, was killed in the battle and Megan was devastated. Merlin had told her that she was never good enough for Luke and it was her fault that Luke was killed, the hatred began to grow. Despite her feelings against Merlin, Megan knew he was a powerful ally and she would need him, along with others, to capture Mordred and Dewi, bring them to justice, and collect the hefty bounty. Jilleen Dorbeard crafted an amazing urban fantasy that was rich in fantasy, action, and emotion. The inter-character relationships between creature species exceeded expectations and brought the story to a new level of reading enjoyment. The plot was well-developed and flowed effortlessly throughout the chapters. I found the story full of suspense, high tension, abundant emotions, and thrilling action to keep the reader turning pages willingly. The mixture of dark, ominous moments and fun, clever, and unpredictable juncture enhanced the enjoyment of this book. This was an easy, enjoyable, thrilling read for me and I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Readers Copy
This is a spin off the Splintered Magic series. I have not read that series (even though ithas been on my TBR forever), and while there are some things that may be better understood if you have read that series, I would say it is not necessary. Megan is a human who lives aware of the magical world. She works for and lives with her best friend Brigid who runs a magical inn. She also just so happens to be a dragon-riding bounty hunter in her 40's. And she must team up with the Merlin (yes that Merlin!) on this bounty. They are hunting an enemy of Merlin's from long ago - over 1000 years long ago - who has already tried to kidnap a dragon mage in his quest for more power. Mordred and Dewi prove to be more difficult to catch than she anticipated. So now she must work with Merlin and his dragon to bring in Mordred and Dewi to save the dragons and collect the bounty. Megan is such a fun character! She is in her 40's but still has the attitude of a younger person sometimes! She is also a strong woman who knows when she needs help. And she is definitely a risk taker! She has such a wonderful relationship with her dragon that she is able to come up with the most terrifying to me ideas of maneuvers to do in the air. And Merlin is a character! I love the development of his character in this book! I don't want to give anything away, but he definitely has a reason for his attitude. I enjoyed meeting Brigid and Mr. Mittens as well! (Aside from the prequel!) I REALLY need to start the Splinter Cat series because they are such wonderful supporting characters in this book. Who wouldn't love a boss with a castle in Faerie and who lets you leave to hunt down the bad guys! And a cat that can realm walk and change shapes?! Hard to tell what is cooler - Mr. Mittens or Goch the dragon! And there is also Sorcha, Megan's bounty hunting apprentice. She is going to be a force to reckon with as well! I enjoyed the writing style and definitely the character development. The way this book ended was such a surprise! I definitely look forward to seeing what happens in the next book! I'm rooting for Megan and Merlin to collect their bounty and save the worlds!
I don’t know what it is with her books, but Jilleen Dolbeare really grabs me from the very start and won’t let me go. I hate when her stories end because I’m that into her world. I’ve been in a book slump for months, not even able to get into series I usually love. But I started Borrowed Amulet, and was RIVETED. I don’t know why – yes, the characters, especially Megan’s courage and revenge-fueled drive. Yes, the darling Goch, little red dragon. Yes, the fact that Merlin (that Merlin) is starting to slowly try not to be an AH, with variable success. The emotions are real, the bounty hunts are exciting, and there is a lot of suspense.
I can’t wait for the next book in the series, to see where this goes. Megan has a huge, difficult rescue job ahead of her and I’m anxious to see how she pulls it off. If you haven’t tried Jilleen Dolbeare’s books, they are must-reads. But start with the Splintered Magic books if you can, so you know the background. I highly recommend these.
I'm totally enamored with Megan and Goch in this magical world. A fearless midlife woman who keeps her inner turmoil and losses controlled by bounty hunting with her dragon. The relationship between her and Merlin is absolutely hilarious with his pompous attitude and her needling him, the twat who said hurtful things plus referring to her constantly as the human. This time around the two have to kind of put their differences aside to team up and get Mordred, Merlin's arch nemesis and his dragon, but as usual Merlin has to mend fences before they can actively hunt. Is there someone he hasn't antagonized in his past? This book was packed with numerous adventures, a brutal dragon fight, new intriguing characters, a magic nulling amulet, Sorcha getting her own dragon, etc, etc, just too much to mention. Dana, Brigid's grandmother, is only too happy to supply and design destructive, explosive magical balls in her lab for Megan to test, eg Hell Fire ballsCan wait to see what Jilleen has in store in the next book.
I read I pretty sure all of her series but this one is the best. Each one is better. Love the reference to Anne McCaffrey stories books of Pern and Dragon riders like Meagan , she is living the dream .then you have the dragons , Mr mittens is one bad ass kitty lol. Merlin yes that Merlin and reference and characters from king Arthur stories and legends . soscha kick ass warrior who joined the quest and is new bounded hunter , Megan became one to work on her grief after losing Luke her love of her life. Then got the different worlds or realms . great story with wonderfully characters and they are evolving and growing in each book. It great fun read lot of action adventure with strong female lead charcter who dealing with grief and she only human in thus group on quest to save the world.
New book in a new series in an already established world.....lost yet? Don't be! While it is perfect as the start of a series, if you read the previous Splintered Magic series, it will make a lot more sense. Our MC is a boring human without Magic, who just happens to be besties with a dragon and his rider, at least according to Merlin. Yes, that Merlin. Who is a mage. I won't go into specifics, you need to read, but it's a great lore filled realm. Our MC has 2 jobs. A hotel clerk( to the Magic peoples, it's great) and a bounty hunter for the Magic realms. She has a student who wants to ride as well and that's covered too. There is a prequel novella and it's worth the read to get caught up for this series. Seriously though, all of these are worth reading and well worth waiting for more. I highly recommend all of Jill's books.
Megan is a dragon riding bounty hunter and also works at her best friend’s supernatural inn. After the previous book where they recovered a magical necklace from Mordred, she’s interested in getting the bounty on him. Teaming up with Merlin, her friend Sorcha and the dragons, they set out to capture Mordred. With help from friends and enemies, it turns into quite the adventure. There is action, surprises, and humour. The characters are interesting and work well together. I love the fact that Megan is a fan of the Pern books by McCaffrey and Mercy Thompson books by Briggs, two of my favourite series. There are a lot of dragon similarities to the Pern books. This is a fun, easy read that is worth every minute of it. I am going to reread the Splintered Magic books again, this reminded my of how much I liked them.
I’m sorry to say that sadly I did not connect with this book. I just felt like everything was moving way too fast and too quickly, without having enough character development or world building. The story itself was ok, but I found myself struggling to finish this book. At the end I gave up and didn’t finish it (DNF). I know that Jilleen Dolbeare is a very talented author, as one of my all-time favourite series “The Portlock Paranormal Detective” is written by Jilleen Dolbeare in collaboration with author Heather G. Harris. I’m just bummed that I couldn’t get into this book. I am still looking forward to continuing reading the Portlock Series (which is truly amazing) and hope that I get to read future books from this author.
I loved the prequel and was so excited to read this and it did not disappoint! Megan is still at odds with losing Luke and once again begrudgingly teams up with Merlin to go on a dangerous and reckless mission to hunt Mordred and his evil dragon. The author does a great job weaving their magic and has us flying alongside Megan and Goch as they travel the skies on this exciting and thrilling adventure. Captivating, intense, emotional and full of magic, Megan is a terrific character, strong, fun and has an incredible relationship with her dragon and I cannot wait to be back with them in book two!
This is based on Brigid's best friend, Megan, but she is so hung up on Luke's death that she makes a lot of annoying mistakes. It makes her very irritating and not in the least a strong woman, just a mess whose basically whining endlessly. It features the whole gang, although Brigid is mentioned in passing this all about Megan whose gone in to being a bounty hunter with her dragon Goch. She is careless, a bit annoying and very cavalier with the gifts given to her. I hope that as this series progresses she becomes a bit more with it and less selfish.
Megan has decided to go after Mordred and his dragon to get the bounty and stop them from spreading their evil, however, she is going to need the help of her dragon Gosh and all the allies they can find. Another good book in the series that is filled with great characters, especially the dragons, lots of magic and action, and I can't wait for the next book to see how everything turns out.
It’s like Megan and the rest forgot about Brigid’s powers and a simple fix to the final battle. Also I think the name of Brigid’s great grandmother was changed in this short series. A series about the human best friend of a part fae woman could still include both friends as the other series did. Instead this series has Megan with little help from Brigid where in the Splintered series Brigid always had help from Megan.
I got to know the main character in a previous series and couldn't wait to read more! The author develops the characters really well. I love the storyline, the mixing of new worlds and cultures . The mention of Star Trek and The Dragon Riders of Pern, excellent! These books are fun to read, there's no f bombs, no explicit sex scenes. There's fun , action ( not a lot of gore), happiness, and loss.
I probably could have got into this book, but dnf because the heroine is 45. There should have been some warning in the blurb. Was there? If there was it wasn't clear. For a reader of romantasy, the "norm" is: straight, between the ages of 18 to 30 for the h and 18 to 35 for the H, both slim good looking people. Anything outside of this "norm" should be highlighted in the blurb.
And there are dragons... A Quest, bounty hunters, splintered Realms and dragon riders. With humor, drama, and grief. Adventure, fighting evil, making new friends. It's a delightful fabulous tale, and I can't wait for more!!! Did I mention Excalibur? Yep, that Excalibur!!! Dive in, you'll love it!!!
What a great read these books are it also has your characters from Splintercat popping in , the cast of characters are brilliant and the storylines are strong I held my breath a few times I also laughed and smiled a lot , this cat and mouse playing with Merlin and Megan is really entertaining a very well deserved 5 stars
First in a new series which I took my time with as I anticipate that it will be a while before the next one comes out as the author has recently spent time in hospital due to a serious illness. In addition to wishing Jilleen a speedy recovery I look forward to the next episode which I will get as soon as it is available.
This seemed like it might be a good series. I felt like I was playing catch-up quite a bit with parts of the plot. I'd like to get a better understanding of Megan than what was presented here. I felt like I was missing some important parts such as how did she get her sword, and dragon, and what happened to Luke - there was more. Maybe I'll go back to read the Splintered Magic series first.
After reading this book, I wasn’t really sure if I liked it or not. There were some places that were pretty childish and other places that I thought were pretty ok writing. I thought Merlin was annoying and the FMC was interesting. I liked the dragons though. I’m not sure if I’m going to read the next book in the series or not.
I’m sorry (not sorry), but I’m shipping Megan and Merlin. They would make a great couple. And since we kind of ended with cliffhanger I believe we shall see in the next book. The only thing I require is for Megan to become immortal. That is all.
I really enjoyed reading this book! A definite page turner!! You will be gripped from the first page!! I enjoyed the twists along the way and can't wait to see the future challenges that this pair are going to face!
It is a good story! This is another very readable and entertaining book. Although it shares some elements from the "Splintered Magic" series, it is a stand-alone book in its' own right. Well done. I received an ARC copy of this novel and am under no obligation to review it.
Magical Bounty Hunt! Go on a fast paced adventure with our friends Meagan and the wizard Merlin with their magnificent dragons and friends to hunt down Mordred. Wonderful characters and descriptions bring this easy to read, enjoyable story to life. Looking forward to the next book.
This story is more than the cover and the description reveal. There are numerous exciting and scary moments, but there is a lot that's heartwarming, including the ending. Start reading!
Another great adventure with all the dragon riding crowd. Love the suspense and action. But I really dislike stories that leave you hanging at the end to be continued in the next book. The series is good though.
