A Way With Darkness

Rate this book
A forbidden power. A fractured past. And a man she swore she’d never face again.

I had stolen a dark ancient power for the good of this magick world, its darkness and chaos now swirling within me. The Council had led me straight to it for their own gain and I had been too trusting and naive to see its danger. Now, I was alone and desolate, forced to pick up the pieces of my life.

There were strict rules laid out by The Council that all before me had followed to ensure their success, but he had led me astray my first year at the university.

I had sent him away to the worst prison in our world. I had ensured that my future and freedom would be secure. But now, he was back, throwing me into oblivion and the unknown all over again to face this darkness he imposed on me head on.

We had always been fated to find one another, but this time, I was sure he would finally destroy me for good.

Note to This story does include elements of non consensual touching, violence, and brief implied mention of self harm but focuses on deep connections, healing and setting right what is wrong.

This review, as well as the author's Spotify playlist, are available on my blog: Wine Cellar Library

First, I would like to thank the Reedsy Discovery and author for providing me with an advanced review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. (This review is slightly modified from the editorial review that I wrote for Reedsy.)

Before, Adelaide would do anything for Nathan–even steal ancient magic to save his sister. A mutual betrayal leaves Adelaide cursed with dark, uncontrolled magic and Nathan in prison. One year later, Nathan is back at the University of Mysteries while he awaits a formal trial, flanked by his cocky former cellmate, and Adelaide struggles with her conflicting feelings. The strict rules that the Council enforces on the pledges forbid unsanctioned relationships, but some loves are too powerful to deny. While Adelaide’s status and future career are on the line, Nathan faces being returned to the prison that broke him.

This book has me in its thrall. Adelaide starts her final year at university as a shell of herself. Emaciated and depressed, she has isolated herself from everyone who cares about her. As she repairs her friendships and becomes confident in her magic, she slowly grows in confidence. While she still has doubts, her journey in healing is glorious. Her growth to become unapologetically herself is inspiring. A Way With Darkness by Zoe T. Conley is written beautifully, from the prose to the strong bonds of friendship and love to the call for women's empowerment. As Adelaide begins to question the chokehold that the Council has on its pledges, she starts to rebel, and it awakens a drive within her to master her talents, explore her sexuality, make a statement with her appearance, and embrace her dark magic.

The friendships in the story are to be envied, being mutually forgiving, understanding, devoted, and supportive. While Adelaide and Nathan do stumble, they communicate in a healthy way and recognize and admit to their faults. It’s truly refreshing to read a book bursting with healthy relationships. I will definitely read anything Zoe T. Conley publishes in the future.

A Way With Darkness is a stellar addition to the romantasy genre. With dark academia and magical vibes, it is a cozy, slow-burn friends-to-enemies-to-lovers romance with moderate open-door sexual content, making it appropriate for new adult and adult audiences.

The opening prologue puts you smack dab in the middle of the events that lead to ultimate plot of the story. It was a bit difficult for me to pick up on exactly what was happening and how the characters related to each other. After getting into the first chapter, I was able to connect a few more of the dots.

I really enjoyed the dual point of view and LOVED getting to know Nathan! Adelaide and Nathan first met at The University of Mysteries. The Council had already decided that Adelaide had a prophecy to fulfill for them, and they sought her out and recruited her. During her time there, she became best friends with Nathan and Jensen (I adore Jensen, btw). On a mission directed by The Council, she takes on a dark magick, and things go awry. Nathan ends up in Kampe Prison - a torturous place that leaves him scarred, and Adie and Jensen helped put him there.

He is released and sent back to the University for his final Pledge year, and who does he run into first thing? Adelaide of course! They soon discover the bond that they share, and so begins their journey to deciding who they really are and how to stay together.

I honestly felt that the book was a bit long, but loved the relationships and dynamics of the characters. There could definitely be a prequel!

Thank you to Booksprout for giving me the opportunity to read this book for a review!

A Way With Darkness” by Zoe Conley is an emotional, gripping journey that completely immerses you in its dark and magical world. From the first chapter, I was drawn into the complexity of Adie’s life, a young woman struggling with a past that haunts her and a future that seems increasingly entangled with darkness. Zoe Conley weaves a story that is both heart-wrenching and captivating, pulling you deeper into a web of secrets, power, and betrayal.

A Heroine in the Shadows
Adie is a brilliantly crafted protagonist—flawed, resilient, and relatable. She isn’t just battling dark magic; she’s battling her own inner demons, and that emotional depth makes her journey even more compelling. Watching her navigate a world filled with dangerous alliances and treacherous choices had me on the edge of my seat. Each decision she makes feels weighty, loaded with consequences that ripple through the story.

World-Building That Thrills and Chills
The world-building in A Way With Darkness is nothing short of breathtaking. Zoe Conley masterfully paints a world where the lines between light and darkness are constantly blurred, and where every shadow hides a potential threat. The atmosphere is intense, brooding, and at times, downright eerie. It’s a world where power is as dangerous as it is alluring, and you can feel the tension rising with each chapter.

Twists That Will Leave You Reeling
One of the most remarkable aspects of this book is how it constantly surprises you. Just when you think you’ve figured out where the story is heading, Conley pulls the rug out from under you with plot twists that left my jaw on the floor. The pacing is perfect, with moments of quiet introspection balanced by shocking reveals and action-packed scenes that kept me turning pages late into the night.

Themes of Power, Betrayal, and Resilience
At its core, A Way With Darkness explores the seductive and destructive nature of power. The characters are all grappling with their own desires, fears, and ambitions, and it’s fascinating to see how their choices play out. The theme of betrayal runs deep throughout the story, making you question who Adie can truly trust—and the answer is never simple. But perhaps what resonated with me most was the theme of resilience. Adie’s strength, even in the face of overwhelming darkness, is truly inspiring.

Final Thoughts
Zoe Conley has delivered a masterpiece with A Way With Darkness. It’s a dark, enchanting fantasy that keeps you guessing until the very end. With its rich world-building, complex characters, and unpredictable twists, this book is a must-read for any fantasy lover. I’m already anxiously awaiting what comes next in this series—because there is no way this story is done unraveling. If you haven’t picked this up yet, do yourself a favor and dive in. You won’t regret it.

A great read!

Loved the Harry Potter/Hunger Games vibes with the Council & the friendship storylines throughout.

Definitely room for a prequel, would absolutely lap that up 🙌🏼

A bit of a slow burn as the beginning does throw you in at the deep end a little bit but it’s worth continuing with as the character development is brilliant & absolutely adore the FMC and the topics covered through her story 🖤

This was a 5 star read for me!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I didn't want it to end & wanted to stay in this world forever!

Witchy, autumnal, Halloween/Samhain vibes. 🍂

Think Sabrina the teenage witch, Harry Potter, practical magic, the craft & fourth wing 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

Utterly obsessed as I am such a witchy poo myself, I connected & resonated so much with the Adie the FMC. 🔮🧙🖤

MMC released from prison back to witchy university, rekindles with strong FMC just fumbling her way through life regaining her self-confidence & channeling her magick.

~Friends to enemies to lovers. 👌🏼🖤
~Bonding over trauma but focus on soft healing with magick & love! 🙏🏼
~F*ck the patriarchy vibes! 🖕🏼💋
~ Potions & perfumes, magical wands, travelling by crystal

TW: prison, murder (not written on page), sexual assault
The way the FMC is treated after the assault is beyond beautiful & this part is wrote so carefully & I could tell so much care was put into each word, i found this almost comforting rather than triggering so please bare this in mind if you did think you'd be triggered by this. 🖤🙏🏼

So beautifully written with amazing metaphors & character quotes! Here are some of my favourite quotes from the book 🖤📖💬-
Contains slight spoilers ...

📖 "yet it was the perfect reminder of the pain Nathan causes and a clear warning of the damage he deals, like a red caution label on highly flammable objects."

📖 "Each moment his mouth lingered against mine for another deep kiss, he single-handedly unknotted every twisted vine and root that had shackled my heart, some of which I had not even known were there."

📖 "His lips met my skin with the lightest, most gentle kisses. Each one meant to wash away the lingering memory of unwelcome hands."

Thank You SO SO SO much for allowing me to read this book prior to publishing Zoe! I loved it so much 🖤 highly recommend 🖤🔮🧙⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was lucky enough to find this author on book tok & this book had everything I loved & I love supporting authors as much as possible & ohhh it sure did impress me!!

Thank you Zoe for allowing me to read your new release as an ARC reader! I am so proud of you!

💜Magic, witches & potions, wands
🖤Enemies to lovers
💜Dark elements
🖤Slow burn
💜Prison
🖤Morally grey men
💜Character development
🖤Study session romance

I managed to note some lil bits down when first reading so I’ll add them before but I didn’t manage to jot anything down towards the second half of the book as I was so invested in it!

Chapter - Bleeding - oh my heart🥹

‘I’d let you punish me any day, Adie…’

‘I knew then that I would forever burn for this man.’

It does have some dark elements. The healing bond between the characters was so beautiful. They really did have to get through the dark & rough patch to see the beauty they have.

The character development throughout was amazing & I loved the friendship between our 3 main characters. My heart broke for Nathan & I would have loved to have more of his POV’s but that didn’t stop me giving this a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The cottage scene!! Oh my heart! Our FMC Ade smashed it & it was such a beautiful moment for them both.

The wands!!!! It was giving Harry Potter vibes!!🖤🖤

This was a beautiful book & I highly recommend you pick it up if you love the tropes🖤

This is Zoe first book of A Pledge Tale.
The beginning hooks you in and gives us a glimpse of what was at stake for everyone.

Our main character is Adelaide, she has endured so much in so little time. She became lost and closed off due to the traumatic events that transpired. You feel the emotions that she feels and see how she heals and overcomes so many things on her personal journey at the academy. I love seeing her grow into her own and take back her power!

I enjoyed the brief pov from Nathan our other main character. He did not always make the right decisions but he did so for his family. I am interested in Nathans point of view in which Zoe puts him as the main character in her second book called A Hold on Darkness.

I could feel a lot of what the main characters felt. I was on high alert with our villain (he is ick). Zoe T Conley described everything so beautifully and so descriptively like as if we were there with them. There was just the right amount spice which was long overdue for some of our mains!

It is only 4.5 because the pacing was a bit slow in some aspects but I understand that was the calm/peaceful moments before the storm which made the stakes were made even higher towards the end of the book.

I am glad I took my sweet time with her book and got to know Adelaide, Nathan, Jenson, Leighton (ick), Letty, and Natalie on their journey at the magic academy. I loved seeing each character think for themselves and make their own choices.

Overall I loved the world that Zoe portrayed!

This was such a good story! I absolutely LOVED these characters and how their friendships were forged, tested, and withstood throughout all of their tribulations. Being able to see how these characters worked through their traumas together, healed, and also healed each other was amazing.
I love a good enemies to lovers 👀 but a friends to enemies to lovers..? Phew. Absolutely yes without a doubt.
I also loved the fuck the government/council aspect. A corrupt patriarchal group of leaders… 🙃 fuck them indeed. We love a good rebellion 🫶🏻
The magic system was super fun too! It’s been a while since I’ve seen wand magic and it was such a good time. I do wish we could have seen a little bit more of the magic system/world just because I loved it so much. Maybe we’ll see a little bit more in Nathan’s story or the books to come. 👀
Thank you for a great time Zoe!

oh my god this book.

This book put me through so much, it is a story about healing after betrayal, finding love in healing, growth and repairing broken minds and bonds.

One of my favorite aspects in this book is how the friends interacted and worked together to help each other. There was genuine care and love for each main and side character. And the antagonist? I wanted to hit him over the head with a freaking chair.

There is such good healthy communication in this book. This book is the "what happened after' the big fight and biggest betrayal. The characters mind set was so refreshing and authentic to how a person in the real world would act and think if they struggled with similar things.

This book is dark but warm, comforting and heart wrenching. Truly a amazing book.

Lucky enough to receive an e-arc copy.
This was my first darker fantasy and boy was I in for a ride!
Aspects I enjoyed were the world building and the themes throughout the book such as betrayal and redemptions.
The main character was great, she wasn’t perfect and that’s why I liked her.
I wasn’t ready for the twists and turns reading this book as I had no idea what I was getting myself into with a darker fantasy!
My only flaw was I’ve read so many cozy, sunshine and daisy fantasy’s that this one threw me off but that is 100% a personal preference and I still very much enjoyed it!
Congratulations to the author on writing an amazing book.

"Only the best for you of course." He teased back, a hint of amusement playing at his lips. "I have every intention of setting you free of this place if its the last thing I do."

OH MY GOODNESS. This was the perfect slow burn I have been looking for. In this story we have magic, witches, and a morally grey MMC! There is also a good amount of F the patriarchy. I really loved the sense of found family between the main characters Jensen, Adelaide and Nathan. I really could not put this book down!

The way Adelaide was able to find herself and stand her ground even in her darkest moments were *chefs kiss*. These characters were so believable and flawed. I think that would have to be my favorite part. Everyone makes mistakes but it's what you make of those mistakes that matter.

Review: a way with darkness by Zoe T. Conley.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved it. it was a little confusing at first, but soon it was all gone because the story really ropes you in. the characters have a lot of depth to them, together and on their own. the story was powerful and even inspiring at times. I truly can't wait for the next book.

After a hard battle, Adelaide , Nathan and Jensen fall out of touch. (the why you can read for yourself, I don't want to spoil anything) they used to be best friends, and the story starts like it seems they are more like strangers now. the story is mainly about Adelaide and Nathan, but Jensen plays a strong part as well in the story.

It's about finding yourself, reconnecting with the world and dealing with trauma. The author really created an emotional, fun, suspenseful and sexy romantasy that I will definitely be re-reading in the future.

it's a Romantasy with some TW, so please read those before you start.

Definitely a 5 star read.

🖤 a way with darkness 🖤
Zoe Conley
Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The start of this book had beautiful, intricately described characters, world development, and emotion that was more than just mere words on a page. Zoe Conley did something really amazing with not just giving you characters with emotions, but PUT you into their shoes, their thoughts, and it was like walking beside them! The plot of this book is set in a magick school, and I was ✨VIBING✨ the entire way! The twists and turns, were WILD! 🫣 The magick elements are so awesome and I love the concept! I loved how immersive this entire book was, and all of the side characters didn't seem flat and forgotten about. 🤗 the main characters, Adelaide and Nathan- SO BEAUTIFUL! I loved their story so so so much! I think there's something so special in the message of finding your special one in darkness, and lighting a way for each other in dark hard times. 🥹🖤 this is not a story I'll ever be forgetting and I can't wait to see what book 2 brings!!! This indie author really made something amazing with this creation, I will recommend this book to anybody and everybody!!! 🫶

A Way With Darkness is a haunting, atmospheric journey that lingers long after the last page. Zoe T. Conley plunges readers into a world where magic is beautiful, dangerous, and morally complex, and where every choice carries shadows. Adelaide is a compelling, flawed protagonist whose inner struggle feels raw and real—her ambition, guilt, and desire for power make her both relatable and riveting.

The book excels at crafting a tense, almost oppressive mood that keeps you turning pages. Conley’s writing is sharp and immersive, perfectly capturing the push and pull of desire, fear, and loyalty. I particularly appreciated how the darkness in the story isn’t just external; it threads through the characters’ hearts and minds, making the stakes feel intimate and urgent.

That said, a few moments dragged under the weight of the brooding atmosphere, and certain secondary characters could have been more fleshed out. Despite these minor flaws, the story’s intensity, emotional depth, and intricate magical world more than compensate.

Review: A Way with Darkness

Rating: 4 stars

The book starts strong and feels a bit like Harry Potter but set in a university for adults. The story is most interesting when it shows characters using dark magic, though the origins and rules of that magic aren’t explained clearly.

The characters are a highlight. Jensen is the most enjoyable—quirky, flashy, and funny—and provides a nice contrast to the darker parts. The two leads handle the forbidden magic well, but I wanted more detail about how the magic works.

The worldbuilding is light; the book focuses more on characters and mood than on explaining the setting. That choice works in places but leaves some questions. The simple, clear writing makes the book easy to read and quick to finish.

Overall, it’s well written and engaging, with strong characters and a compelling tone, even if the magical lore could be deeper. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

What I loved about this book is that you are immediately thrown into an intense scene with the prologue. The story unfolds as we're given snippets of the main characters lives & their inner thoughts as we see them fight with themselves over the events of the past & how they want to handle their tutures.

Love, mystery, anger & tensions roll in waves back and forth from one to another as chapters peel back the layers to our
characters

While I read I found myself wondering who can be trusted? Who will fall in love? Who is holding all of the power & can these characters actually forgive one another & join forces????

If you're a fan the witchy vibes, the friends to enemies to lovers trope, spice & strength gained through healing... I definitely recommend this book!!

I definitely look forward to Zoe Conley’s future works!!

A Way with Darkness is a romantasy, enemy-to-lovers, paranormal romance that will appeal to fans of Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, offering a mix of magic, excellent world-building, dissension between magical practitioners and their leaders, and outstanding character development for both main and supporting characters. The story delves into complex emotions and relationships, including magic pairing, forgiveness, angst, heartbreak, and uncertainty. I'm pleased to have read this now, as the next installment is imminent. I look forward to reading more from this author, whose writing style I genuinely enjoyed.

I found "A Way with Darkness" by Zoe Conley a gripping and emotionally charged tale that successfully merges elements of dark fantasy with a deeply personal story of healing and self-discovery. The protagonist's journey, after stealing an ancient power, explores themes of chaos, betrayal and redemption. The slow-burn romance, with its enemies-to-lovers dynamic, kept me engaged as the characters navigated their complex bond. Conley's world-building and her portrayal of inner turmoil are both vivid and immersive, making it a satisfying read for fans of dark romance and magick. I absolutely adored this book.

This book reminded me of Harry Potter, but for adults, giving me something to love and cherish as I read through it.

Adelaide has sacrificed so much for Nathan and the council. But when Nathan comes back from prison and starts attending school again.

Adelaides' feelings make her want to be near Nathan all the time. These feelings are supposed to be forbidden the council wanting to keep love separate from school.

But how can you separate two who just seem to be destined to be together? How do you separate two people who seem to have a bond?

This book gave off Harry Potter for adults vibes, it was very well written. Adi has been trying to deal with the after effects of the council manipulating her to take an ancient power and fight there battle. She's gaining control over her magic, or so she thinks but since not much is known about it she's kinda just guessing. She has her two best friends at her side and one of them she's gaining feelings for even though it's forbidden. I think this would have been better had it been faster paced, I am hoping that the second book will be better in that department

This book totally hooked me with its characters. The found family dynamic was so sweet and made me wish I could hang out with them IRL. Adelaide’s journey—from self-doubt to confidence—was empowering and had some really inspiring feminist vibes sprinkled in.

My one gripe? We only got a few chapters from Nathan's POV, and I would’ve loved a fuller picture of what he was thinking. That said, I am excited to see that book two is from his perspective.

If you’re into dark magical vibes, deep friendships, and a little seemingly fated romance with some spice, give this one a go.

Adeline and Nathan were such beautiful characters in this book. The world building was amazing. I can honestly say I’ve never really read anything with this style before but I really entire it. It pulls you in emotionally and holds in to you gently, wanting to you feel every part of it as you read. As you get to know the characters and their past, and the traumas. This book weaves everything together so beautifully. I’m in awe of how wonderful this was. I’m glad I got out of my comfort zone and decided to give this a try.

I read the prologue and the first chapter, it just wasn't enough for me personally to keep reading. It does sound interesting, just not enough for my preference. Just because my interest wasn't peeked enough doesn't mean it isn't a book you shouldn't read.

I only made it through to 17% of the story before deciding it just isn't for me. I feel that it was well written and the characters do seem to be well developed, but it's a bit too slow and character driven for me to stay engaged. Maybe some day I'll try and finish it...
