She carries the fate of a world on her shoulders.

Shandiin walks the margins of humanity in a world teetering on the edge of ruin. The regime in power points fingers at science and sinners, casting genetically enhanced individuals as "abominations" to be hunted down. Yet amidst the chaos, Shandiin encounters a clandestine network led by a brilliant genetic engineer racing to preserve what remains of humanity. Their plan? To escape to a new world, bringing with them a bloodline of leaders designed to succeed where Earth's civilizations have failed.

Shandiin is skeptical, but as the world around her crumbles, she has no choice but to join them as the group launches their expedition. However, the planet they find to colonize has its own intentions. As survival becomes the paramount challenge in this strange new world, Shandiin uncovers astonishing abilities within herself-and, delving deeper into her newfound powers, she unearths truths about the planet and its enigmatic inhabitants that could spell either salvation or doom for them all.

About the author

Susan Alandar

Susan L. Alandar has written fantasy since she was a child. She grew up on Robert Heinlein and Ray Bradbury and Madeline L’Engle, discovering epic fantasy (Tolkien, of course) about the time Heinlein broke into adult work with Glory Road. But she gave up the fragile hope of a writing career when she became an abandoned mother of two and needed a stable income. In retrospect Susan would say she needed the raw experience of the real world to bring her writing to life. Now, years later, she has returned to her fantasy world of Hiraeth, ready to share The Daughter of Prophecy series with the world.

Oh, my goodness, I loved this book!

I found this book to be an absolutely fascinating blend of science fiction and fantasy, with some action adventure, and just a little bit of romance thrown in the mix. This author has created an intriguing new world, this book is a combination of advanced technology, and the determination of the refugees from a dying world to survive on a world where they must live without the convenances of the world they abandoned. There are many appealing characters in this book, as well as some with utterly detestable personalities. They are all fascinating though, and their various personalities are very well portrayed and kept me engaged throughout this glimpse into their lives. But to me the most unique character is Shadiin, a woman raised by the Navajo in the American southwest for part of her youth and has no intention of fleeing the dying planet Earth. Circumstances change though and she finds herself a reluctant passenger traveling through space to a destination where the very planet has its own conditions for the humans who want to populate it.
Genetic engineering, political upheaval, mass exodus, murder, modern warfare and technology, a world where technology will never be allowed, and enough twists and turns in the plot to keep a reader's head spinning. Fantastic, must-read book that I recommend highly to other readers.
