I didn’t realize that overthinking and overwhelm go hand in hand. Make sense, just never really realized it, or that this is a whole phenomenon. This book offers a whole slew of tools to calm the mind, which is really the key to everything. Taking the primitive mind that focuses on the negative, staying pumped and ready just in case there may be a sudden need to run from a saber tooth tiger! Times have changed but our brains haven’t. Many, if not all, of these techniques I was already aware of. However they are explained simply, with the scientific background and reference to help motivate the already overwhelmed person to actually try them with some confidence that they will work. I’d also never connected these tools with overthinking, so I will definitely be revisiting them. So many useful insights and tools are provided here that you can choose the ones that resonate with you most, and quite honestly if you only do one, I am certain you will see benefits. Not just in your anxiety level, but in your relationships, career and overall quality of life. Calm mind, happy heart. :)
A friend recommended How to Stop Overthinking by Anthoni Moon, and I downloaded it. It provides a practical guide to overcoming overthinking by blending science with actionable techniques that help shift the mind from stress-driven habits to a more restful state. Anthoni clearly explains the causes and effects of overthinking and offers simple, practical tools—like mindfulness, meditation, and proper breathing techniques—that can be easily incorporated into daily life. While the book may not delve deeply into new concepts, it stands out for its straightforward approach to reducing anxiety.
The author covers a range of topics related to overthinking and how to stop the cycle. Recommendations including mindfulness, empathy, self-compassion, and journaling. Activities on practicing these recommendations are included throughout the book.
In this era of constant bombardment of information and instant connectedness, it can be very difficult to achieve space and time to calm one's thoughts and attend to mindfulness. We can find ourselves in a perpetual state of overthinking things whether about the challenges and uncertainty in our personal lives or those in our community or nation. The author does an excellent job of explaining what overthinking is, and the toll it can take on our mental and physical health. The author also provides many ways to address, manage, and eliminate the tendency and habit of overthinking. Many solutions require us to assess daily habits and make a conscious effort to be more mindful of what we are doing to undermine our mental and physical well-being. A good resource to bring about beneficial changes.
