Hey there boils and ghouls. Today I will be reviewing Gary Naiman's "The Response" and you can also find this review on my YouTube, Inmortuis Draco, so go check it out. This is book one out of two from his Kerry Chronicles series and this review may contain spoilers. So do not forget your bug spray as we step out to review this story.

"The Response" is described as being an alien horror book and it is about Earth's bug species teaming up to attack the humans that inhabit Earth. They are receiving signals from another planet that instructs them to destroy the human species and take over Earth. The attacks start out as being considered freak accidents but eventually the world starts to go into a panic. A team of scientists is gathered to try to solve this problem and save planet Earth and this team includes Devin Kerry.

This story does contain a few elements of horror but overall, it is pretty tame. The book lost some of my interest mostly because of the main character, Devin Kerry. He is suppose to be super intelligent and influential in his field but I just do not believe this. Aside from the incessant reminder that he has written a really great book for his area of study, I see little else to believe that this is the correct character. Either he has been mistaken for someone else or Devin Kerry just does not come across the way he is suppose to. He interrupts during very important discussions and displays a blaring contrast to what his persona is suppose to be during a pivotal moment. These character annoyances are hard to overlook especially as we approach the end of this book because they get cranked up. If you are looking for a story that is described as being alien horror then give it a try because it was a relatively quick read, but try not to be too upset if you find a beam of concentrated light burn away your enthusiasm.

Good Twist

The general concept is not new but the backstory is well presented. I enjoyed the character development and the fast pace of the story. Overall it was a worthwhile read if this type of story appeals to you. I look forward to the next book in the series.

I enjoyed this book for its imagination and good storytelling. This tale reminds me at times of the old 1950’s horror movies with a modern and believable twist.
I look forward to reading the next book.
