The Doctor and Yaz must infiltrate the Aegis Protectorate interplanetary defence expo in search of someone who has been dogging their travels. As the Doctor digs into the company’s main export - the sinister Trojan Program, Yaz faces a battle of her own. Will they finally uncover the truth about the Tourist?
We are already on the sixth episode of the first season of the 13th Doctor, Jody & Mandip both seem to have a blast so far. This time the Doctor and Yasmin are looking for a person being called "the tourist". And so they end up at a conference organised by Aegis, a specialist in modern warfare systems,.with as subject advanced weaponary.
This time Yasmin gets confronted with "the Tourist" and like Yasmin is she takes action and her humanity is her strength. The Doctor not being a fan with the weapon industry is uncomfortable with all this weaponery and the victims of intergallactic warfare. The baddie this time is of the female persuasion and she proves to be a vile character.
Another strong story with the thirteenth Doctor & Yasmin. This series will last another 6 installments.
An interesting conclusion to the arc and moderately satisfying as well, though I can't help but feel that it could have been stronger somehow. But I'm here for a good time with 13th and Yaz. And a good time it was.
One of the most clever ideas utilised for the monthly new series adventures with the Ninth and Thirteenth Doctors is the use of story arcs. It's a great idea as it helps to mimic one of the most popular aspects of the 2005 revival. The story arcs have always generated considerable debate during broadcast in the Doctor Who community, so applying it to Big Finish only makes sense. Aegis concludes the story arc concerning the Tourist, and is a wholly satisfying conclusion to the first six audios.
Aegis sees the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and Yaz (Mandip Gill) infiltrate Aegis Protectorate interplanetary defence expo whilst searching for the mysterious Tourist (Maddison Bulleyment). What follows is one of the most action-packed Big Finish audios, which means a particularly noisy soundscape, as the Doctor and Yaz uncover the sinister Trojan program.
This audio is probably the one that most feels like a Chibnall era story thus far. It has callbacks to Yaz's childhood friend and fellow companion, Ryan, which helps it feel like a missing Whittaker episode. Its central espionage plot inside the expo also recalls the enjoyable spy antics of Spyfall. As someone who is a big fan of Chibnall's time as show runner, its authenticity brought a huge smile to my face, as though returning to those Sundays gone by, where Jodie Whittaker would pop up on the screen.
It's also nice to see some connectivity to the other Thirteenth Doctor audios. For instance, Aegis sees Prospero (Jason Forbes) return from the previous story. The way the stories connect gives the Thirteenth Doctor Adventures an essential feel. Every audio seems important, as one hole jigsaw rather than a load of separate pieces that don't connect.
The reveal of the Trojan programme being false humans with fake memories is also rather neat. It brings to mind the kind of facsimile creations that can come from AI, as these sentient copies of humanity that are actually quite hollow. It's also realistically cruel for an arms dealer. These fake human beings are seen as disposable, because they're not real even though they believe that they have lived real lives, and it's beneficial for war because they don't have to pay real human soldiers or worry about shelter and food for them.
Yaz gets a fascinating subplot here. She's placed inside a Mindscape, where the Tourist tries to take over her body. Her story offers some strong character development for Yaz, exploring her police background, and her insecurities regards why the Doctor chose her as a companion. The writer, Noga Flaishon, really digs in deep into Yaz's character and her psychology.
Overall, Aegis is a thrilling conclusion to the Tourist arc. It delivers an authentic Chibnall era adventure, with some of the best action as well as character development that you can hear in a Big Finish audio adventure. With its creative Mindscape and impressive interconnectivity with the other audios, Aegis is one not to miss if you have heard the other Thirteenth Doctor audios.
this one didn't quite hold together completely for me, maybe the pressure of being a sort of finale. there's a big finish group i sometimes rubberneck on facebook and someone said this was the final straw for them quitting the 13th dr audios bc they're too different from the show (i agree they're different from the show in that they're actually good lol). their reasoning was there were no references to aspects of the show specifically from jodie's run, including the timeless child. if i wasn't already on board that would be the best possible sell to me.
Some aspects of this one were a bit off, but otherwise a solid and entertaining episode. There is also a lot of call back or Easter eggs for longtime listeners.
