Doctor Who: The Hallamshire Incident
A huge UFO has crashed in Hallamshire Forest. Are there survivors? Is the site safe? There are a lot of questions to answer. With UNIT and Torchwood gone, the police must step up, while keeping the incident under wraps. Fortunately, they have officers with extensive experience of otherworldly threats... Patricia Menzies is on her way. Yasmin Khan is being recalled. But Yaz's sister, Sonya, believes the world has the right to know the truth about aliens.

One moment you are climbing a tree to escape a hungry T-Rex and the next you are getting a call from Superintendant Menzies who needs the doctor"s assistance with a crashed spaceship in Sheffield.
So the 13th Doctor and PC Yasmin Khan are coming to solve the situation of a downed flying saucer. Enter Sonya Khan, big sister of a certain PC, who is totally into extraterrestrial stuff and finally sees her little sister at work.
The downed Ice-warrior vessel and its occupants are trouble that certainly warrants a timelords attention which leaves the Khan sisters time to re-aquaint.
A very enjoyable adventure with the 13th Doctor and Yaz. These small adventures hooked back into Doctor Who history are always fun. Menzies recalling her Male Doctor with Charlie Pollard, and with UNIT and Torchwood out of the way Menzies will be rebuilding a new organisation to handle Alien messes. And Yaz has been offered a job would she ever leave the TARDIS.

A really solid story that takes some of the weaknesses of the Jodie Whittaker era and turns them into great story elements.
One of these being the removal of UNIT to make a bad EU joke in Resolution which in this story means that the police have to handle alien invasions instead which changes the dynamic and allows for a Big Finish character to return in the form of Superintendent Menzies.
The story also fixes the lack of appearances of Yaz's family who only appeared in Arachnids and technically Demons but on the whole were completely forgotten on TV. Using Sonya to explore Yaz as a character more and her relationship with the Doctor.
Overall, a fun story that actually does something unlike this era on TV

Enjoyable addition to the series, felt like the bog standard ice warrior story but thankfully had a small twist too it
Jodie had some wonderful monologue in this.
Patricia Menzies was a wonderful touch, a great character and fun call backs to previous encounters

4 stars. Maybe 4.5. I really liked this one! Though I didn’t like the actor for Menzies - she was aura farming SO hard for the entire first half of the episode, when there was just no need. Like, you’re slowing down the pace of everything by slowly saying each line as if it’s all some big reveal. Just talk normally please. Thankfully, she got better as it went on.
But that was my only real issue with it. Normally I find ice warrior stories rather boring, so I wasn’t looking forward to this one. However, it was done in a way that kept me entertained, and felt clever– it did actually add something to the story that the villains were ice warriors, because (SPOILERS) the Doctor knew about their customs, and was able to find the behaviour slightly odd and work out that it was a prison ship.
I really did love that reveal, and Yaz and Sonya being clever enough to lie about doing as they were told and killing the ice warrior, just to hear how the other one reacted. It was great.
My favourite part of the episode was the ending– it genuinely made me shed a tear. An ice warrior willingly leaving his survival suit to protect the Doctor? It was so heartwarming. I thought at first that he was just sacrificing himself for her, and going to be the one to stay behind, which made me roll my eyes a little– but this was so much better. It was clever, and it meant everyone lived, and it was also just so sweet, because we know how much it means to an ice warrior to stay in their shell. So, for once, I am glad ice warriors were used in a story.
And then, I have to mention the bit everyone was going crazy for: Yaz confessing her love for the Doctor to her sister. Now, I would say this didn’t really add to the episode for me, it hasn’t played any part in my love of this episode, but I also don’t think it’s a bad thing. It was a cute moment between two sisters, where one teased the other, and they got to bond. For that reason, I liked it. I don’t think it took anything away continuity-wise, because Yaz says that she still isn’t sure exactly how she feels about the Doctor, and because when Sonya says “You’re in love with her”, Yaz responds with “Yes, I love her.” which is a different sentence. Yaz not saying IN love with her means that it’s not a massively romantic confession– she would have said she loved her right from the start of series 12 without putting too much thought into it. So I don’t think it ruins anything when in Eve of the Daleks she still isn’t sure what she feels, and hasn’t properly come to terms with it, because I doubt that she thinks about it again between this episode and then.

This has been one of the highlights of the Thirteenth Doctor Adventures for me so far. I'm not the biggest fan of the Ice Warriors, and I wasn't previously familiar with Patricia Menzes, but this felt like a nice combination of previous Whoniverse elements. Sonya Khan is always a character that's interested me, and it was nice to have a story that uses her, even though I'm shocked at the idea that she's actually the older sister!

Solid storytelling with an interesting premise for the Ice Warriors. Lost me a bit with Yaz’s love confession bits as I really like Eve of the Daleks so it felt a little like jumping the gun (ironically, as this is retroactive). Patricia Menzies also seemed a little like a comic book character— like girl, you don’t have to be aura farming when no one’s looking! Would rate 3.5 but this story just about slips to a 3 on the enjoyment scale.

I love it when the “monsters” are not the monsters, except when they are the monsters. This was a lot of fun. Very entertaining, very enjoyable, and very much filled with The (Thirteenth) Doctor’s particular type of approach to problem solving.

I don't have much patience for the Ice Warriors, but this story was so well written and had such tight pacing that I think I might just change my mind on that front! My mental rating trended high throughout... then went stratospheric at the end. Fans of 13th/Yaz will be delighted (I sure was).
