The Beachouse Studios series continues with Book 2 as Dan and Ry's descent into darkness takes a bloody turn.
Nothing kills a party like a dead body.
The corpse on the boathouse floor is just the first problem for Beachouse Studios producer Dan Sebring and model Ry Thompson. Even after the party ends, the two need to deal with the consequences of their choices.
The truth can only stay hidden for so long. The vultures are circling, including a disgruntled ex-model, Dan’s powerful boss, and a new party - the mysterious and chilling Angela Harrow. From inside, two of the studio’s own embark on their own searches for answers. As Dan tries to manage the cover-up, Ry slips further and further into a downward spiral.
Ry must find his way back from the precipice. Dan must chart a new course. Whether they like it or not, their fates are intertwined now. If either fails, the other is doomed.
Charles W. Rogers (sometimes C. W. Rogers) is an LA-based writer and podcaster. He is a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in "Dramatic Writing," which is just a fancy way to say he spent too much money on coffee while writing scripts for four years. When not writing, he is a co-host of the Star Wars tv analysis podcast "Gold Squadron Gays" and a cast member of the TTRPG podcast "For Light And Dice".
When he is not writing or grumbling into a microphone about Star Wars, Charles spends his time bothering his cat Jonathan Harker with random history facts he read and replaying the Dragon Age games.
After the mean (in the best way possible) cliffhanger from Beachouse Studios book one, I have eagerly awaited book two, Second Shoot. The wait was worth it. I loved book one. I FREAKING ADORED the second entry into the series. The additions of two of my favorite characters from the first novel as point-of-view characters were wonderful in changing the lineup from the first go-around. Both have amazing arcs. In fact, that's where Second Shoot shines the most. If you love good character work, it's this book. It's much lighter on the plot, as a lot of the fall out of dealing with the events of book one. So, if you like plot-heavy books, this book might not be for you. This is a meticulous character study of various relationships between romantic relationships, mentor figures, friendships, and more. This book very much pandered to me because I am a very firm believer that character development is plot. Second Shoot is clearly the bridge to the back half of the series. However, it's very necessary to get all the characters where they need to be so that the story can go forward. And I just really dig that about C.W. Rogers' work.
Second Shoot, the sophomore outing in CW Roger's Beachouse Studios series is as electrifying - if not more so - than the first. Dealing with the aftermath of Ry's meltdown at the end of the first book, and Dan's quick-thinking cover up, Second Shoot begins with the promise of a high-profile arrest at a massive industry award ceremony. As we've come to expect from book 1, the characters are messy, the antics dramatic, and the stakes continuously growing. However, Roger's impressive hat trick is giving the ensemble cast dimension while maintaining a breakneck pace and an ever-surprising narrative. Despite the flash-forwards, I never knew where the plot was headed (in the best way). And Roger's does not pull any punches. I cannot wait to see where book 3 takes this cast of unruly characters.
