REVIEW :

Ekaki by Harssh A. Singh is a historical suspense thriller with a mind blowing narrative by a 14yr old Rewa which helps us to dive into the plot which covers historical , cultural , political scenarios of Chittagong in pre Independence era of India in between 1925 up to 1932 . This book is a captivaging exploration of solitude and introspection which delves into themes of self discovery, personal conflict , complexities of personal relationships , cruelity , murder , revolutionary acts and many more . The central theme of the book centers around a 14yr old Rewa who has an abnormal ability which is to predict future or to be precise to predict death . Throughout the first half of the book a hate relationship between Rewa and her mother is found which makes her father her only ally who made her aware of every of every means of education possible. The narrative is highly reflective offering insights into conditions of human , cities through the eye of the protagonist who navigates isolation while searching for a someone to lean into amidst every negativity present in her life .

CHARACTER PROTRAYAL :

REWA : The character of Rewa is developed in such a way where you sympathize with her , feel isolated and live every emotion she faces throughout the book . The emotion she felt for her family amidst every isolation she faced is something you will feel a deep sense of regret . The diary enteries of Rewa gives us insights of the death she predicted throughout the book but after sometime when she truly controls her abilities and don't expose it to the public as instructed by her father Dabir . The protagonists evolution throughout the story makes the reader question their relationship with solitude.
The author's writing style is very fascinating, accessible, poetic capturing the beauty of solitude where people will find that being alone sometimes brings the greatest pleasure. Throughout the story the pace is deliberate allowing readers to dive into the characters and the thoughts going through the protagonist's mind.

However some of the readers might find the plotline to be slowing down or heavy emotions but it's just that Author focuses more on psychological aspects of the characters rather than the other aspects of the story which makes it a thought-provoking read for those who are interested in psychological suspense thriller as well as books that are about historical phenomenon.

I personally loved this book and it's been a while where I truly loved the historical elements along with suspense and thriller. The unnatural talent portrayed by Rewa which serves as the central theme is a cherry on top . People who are keen about historical thrillers and suspenses should absolutely read this book .

I finished reading this book, now that I'm writing a review for you , I think I can pen down what I felt for all of you, so let me tell you beforehand, this book isn't just a story it was an experience and for you it will be too I promise, the elements are very hooky to keep u glued to this book.

Imagine this: It’s 1932, and the smell of rebellion is wafting through pre-independent India and through the noisy chaos of Chittagong’s crowded bazaars and the whispered murmur of rural hideaways, a girl named Rewa carries a gift or is it a curse? That no child should bear. This book drops your headfirst into her world, mixing wrenching historical fiction with strands of mysticism as palpable and unpredictable as a monsoon storm.

From the first Rewa’s talent for seeing death made her feel scared even she hated herself for it, as she was unaware of her truth yet to be told, floating her in a sea of terror and awe. The whispers of her family-(there's more to this) that glances from fellow villagers and her family that raw isolation will make you ache for her right along with the confusion she feels.

With the revolution started to take its place, a truth about her unfolded in front of Her truths that she didn't know she needed, her life crumble down in a blink well I won't spoil it for you but it wasss so good to read, family truths that hit like hidden daggers and a shadowy foe whose chill presence loomed larger with every turn. Guided by echoes from beyond, her powers evolved into something fierce and fateful. Singh weaved real revolutionary sparks with supernatural suspense so seamlessly, you'll learn the pulse of India's freedom fight while your pulse races alongside hers. Themes of destiny, unyielding courage, and the wild resilience of the spirit soo good.

Characters who made impact on me: @Dabir mostly hate, @Rewa Obviously felt everything for her, @Eleanor @Peelo @Ajoy @Eleanor wife of a birtisher a mother who made an impact on me Atlast made me feel sad .

lastly

it's a haunting echo that begs What shadows would you chase to rewrite tomorrow? Grab the book now and let Rewa's fire ignite yours 4/5 utterly unmissable!

Set in 1932 near Chittagong, the novel introduces us to Rewa, a fourteen-year-old girl burdened with the extraordinary and isolating ability to foresee deaths. This gift, rather than empowering her, alienates her from her family and community, except for her steadfast father, Dabir. Singh intertwines these historical realities with the mystical elements of Rewa's powers, creating a narrative that is both gripping and thought-provoking. The tension escalates when Rewa predicts the death of Peelo, a young revolutionary teacher. This prophecy pulls her into the dangerous world of anti-colonial resistance, forcing her to confront not only the British but also the dark secrets within her own family. This is its exploration of destiny and free will. Rewa’s struggle with her powers reflects the larger struggle of a nation fighting for its freedom. Singh raises profound questions about fate, choice, and the burden of knowledge. Ekaki

This is detailed review of book- "Ekaki - The Girl Who Saw Fate". story revolves around our 14-year-old protagonist girl named Rewa who is prone to fits and can see the future, but only the deaths of people. She can see deaths and thats why people hate her and fear her.
Now, I really have to say, this book is crazy because in starting, i was not able to find if Rewa was an animal or girl. Also people yell at her by saying
Chagulla Baccha Pagal ( goat's child is crazy). So at one moment i thought if rewa was a goat.
It's not a typical coming-of-age story. Instead, it's a dark and mysterious story that will keep you us onnthe edge till the last page. We will be feeling bad for Rewa as she was not given food by her own family members but at the same time, you'll be wondering if she's really believing what she thinks she's seeing.
The author does a great job of bringing Rewa's character to life. You really feel bad for her and her struggles. She's not like other girls her age - she's dealing with something much bigger than herself.
One thing I really appreciated about this book is that it doesn't sugarcoat anything. It's raw and real, and it doesn't shy away from the tough questions. How would you deal with knowing when someone is going to die? Would you try to save them, or would you let fate run its course?
Overall, "Ekaki - The Girl Who Saw Fate" is a great read for anyone who loves a good mystery or thriller. It's not for the beginners, but if you're looking for something that will keep you guessing until the very end, this is definitely worth reading out.

"Ekaki" by Harssh Singh is a captivating novel that intertwines elements of mysticism, history, and political intrigue, set against the backdrop of pre-independence India.

About the Book:

The story follows Rewa, a fourteen-year-old girl from Chittagong with the extraordinary and isolating ability to foresee people's deaths. This unique power, seen as both a curse and a gift, places her at the center of a narrative filled with suspense, emotion, and historical significance.

Rewa's journey is marked by her struggle to understand and control her powers, which alienate her from her family and community. Her father, Dabir, stands as her only ally, protecting her from the suspicion and fear of those around them. The narrative takes a dramatic turn when Rewa predicts the death of Peelo, a young revolutionary and teacher, thrusting her into a web of conspiracy against British rule. As the plot unfolds, Rewa discovers unsettling secrets about her family's involvement in the rebellion, adding layers of complexity to the story.

Harssh Singh masterfully blends historical events with fictional elements, creating a vivid portrayal of India's struggle for independence. The presence of Davon, a cunning British spy, heightens the tension and stakes, challenging Rewa to navigate a dangerous world of espionage and revolution.

My Thoughts:

The prose flows smoothly and is easy to understand.
The characters are intricately crafted, each with their own motivations and depth, which makes the story even more intriguing.
The blurb was fascinating but it was the cover that instantly caught my attention. From the first page I got hooked and once I started, I couldn't put it down. The pacing was well-balanced, the story didn't feel dull to me even for a moment.

Highly recommended for those who are interested in Historical Fiction and/or Mystery and Suspense.

"Ekaki" is a poignant exploration of isolation and self-discovery set against the backdrop of India's struggle for independence. The novel revolves around Rewa, a young girl burdened with the ability to predict death. Her unique gift, while granting her a glimpse into the future, also isolates her from her family and community, making her a figure of fear and suspicion.

Rewa's isolation is compounded by the societal expectations placed upon her as a young woman in pre-independence India. She is expected to conform to traditional gender roles and remain silent, but her extraordinary ability challenges these norms. As she grows older, Rewa begins to question her place in the world and the meaning of her life.

The novel's exploration of isolation is particularly poignant in the context of India's struggle for independence. The revolutionaries, like Rewa, are also outsiders, fighting against a foreign power for a better future. However, unlike Rewa, they have a sense of belonging and a shared purpose. This contrast highlights the complexity of Rewa's situation and the challenges she faces in finding her place in the world.

As Rewa becomes involved in the revolutionary movement, she finds a sense of belonging and purpose. However, her gift continues to haunt her, reminding her of the fragility of life and the inevitability of death. Singh's portrayal of Rewa's journey is both heartbreaking and inspiring, making "Ekaki" a powerful and thought-provoking novel. The novel is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of finding one's own path, even in the face of adversity.

What a heart-pounding ride this has been. Filled with chilling images of the revolutionary movement in the 1930’s and the caged life of a cursed young girl, this book took me to places I didn’t know existed.

The book begins with Rewa’s journal entries who is confined and not allowed to interact with anyone. She sees death when she touches someone, and everyone thinks she is bad luck, a witch—everyone, except one person, her father.

Parallelly, we peer into the life of the British Mayor of Chittagong, who has a tragic tale of his own. His wife is engulfed in misery due to their kidnapped toddler. Neil, an Indian, is his henchman.

As the story progresses, we experience the world through the eyes of the young girl, Rewa. She attends a clandestine revolutionary meeting that changes her life, and the story then unfolds in a different, engrossing, and supernatural vein.

There are some hair raising scenes in the dark forest. The Indian struggle in the 1930s, fighting the atrocities inflicted by the British, is distinctly narrated, providing an overview of the cruelties at Kaala Paani and the confiscation of property by the British.

The book masterfully blends mysticism with history, culminating in an army of children who can hear the thoughts of “The Ones”—a twist that kept me hooked until the last page. I devoured it in a day, a testament to its gripping nature.

The author, Harssh, is an actor currently performing in the play *Rajadhiraj* at the NMACC, which I hope to catch soon. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the book launch, and I have high hopes that this story will see the light of day as a movie!

"Nothing is as it seems!"

This mesmerizing historical fiction skillfully blends supernatural elements to deliver a unique and unforgettable story.

At the heart of the narrative is Rewa, a 14-year-old girl from Chittagong, whose rare boon of foresight—the ability to see mortality—forces her into exile from society. Rewa’s haunting journey from being an outcast to becoming Jhara, or Ekaki, is both thought-provoking and emotionally charged as she grapples with her powers and tries to understand their purpose.

In her quest for solace, Rewa seeks the protection of her father, Dabir. However, as she becomes entangled in the revolutions against the British Raj, her existence is questioned, leading to shocking revelations that leave a lasting impact. The inclusion of Davon, an Indian spy working for the British, adds a layer of complexity to the challenges Rewa faces, deepening the intrigue of the story.

The author masterfully intertwines historical fiction, mystery, and supernatural elements to craft a narrative that is gripping from the very start. The pace is just right, maintaining tension and suspense throughout. Additionally, the vivid depiction of the colonial period, the struggles of freedom fighters, and their conflicts of interest create a rich and immersive backdrop.

As I turned the final page, it felt less like I had read a book and more like I had witnessed a cinematic masterpiece. Ekaki is a true page-turner that captivates readers with its intricate plot and engaging storytelling.

This is a must-read for anyone who loves stepping into the realms of historical fiction or supernatural themes. For those exploring Indian authors, Ekaki is a definite yes!

Harssh Singh’s Ekaki is a masterful blend of Historical and supernatural elements, set against the vibrant yet tumultuous backdrop of 1930s India. At the heart of this remarkable debut lies Rewa, a 14-year-old girl whose extraordinary ability to foresee mortality isolates her, rendering her both feared and misunderstood. Through her journey, Singh crafts a poignant tale of self-discovery, resilience, and the complexities of human connection.

Rewa’s personal struggles are intricately intertwined with India’s broader fight for independence, creating a narrative that is both intimate and epic. Singh’s deft storytelling seamlessly weaves themes of destiny, free will, and sacrifice into a richly textured portrayal of a nation on the brink of revolution. Rewa’s relationship with her father, Dabir, serves as an emotional anchor, highlighting themes of unconditional love and courage amidst chaos.

The novel’s antagonist, Davon, a cunning British operative, provides a gripping counterpoint, elevating the stakes and immersing readers in a web of poIitical intrigue and moral dilemmas. Singh’s evocative prose captures both the grandeur and grit of the era, transporting readers into a world fraught with uncertainty yet brimming with hope.

More than a supernatural thriller, Ekaki is a profound exploration of the human spirit, questioning the burden of knowledge and the meaning of choice. Singh's debut is an enthralling, genre-defying triumph, leaving readers reflective and inspired. For fans of historical fiction, supernatural suspense, or stories of personal transformation, Ekaki is an unmissable literary gem.

Ekaki is a story of a 14-year-old girl with an otherworldly power of witnessing people’s deaths.

The story begins with a painful picture of a cage and desolate life of the teenager in a family that has refused to accept her. Readers would appreciate the storyline flowing through the Indian struggle for freedom, making it relatable and culturally comprehensible. However, readers may find it difficult to transition easily from the timeline of diary entries, through which the story is narrated in the beginning, as the author has occasionally glided over an entire year of these entries, leaving the reader in a lurch, especially when the story is just beginning. Nonetheless, the clever use of history, imbibing fantasy-fiction, is gripping for the most part and makes it a compelling read.

Readers, especially a litterateur, may find understanding the text difficult for its grammatical and syntactical errors and the author’s hagiography towards the protagonist, which renders the text melodramatic, exaggerated, and amusing at times.

The story builds the reader to reach a passionate climax, however, disappoints when that passion turns out to be a consequence of a mere personal vendetta, thus making the climax anti-climactic.

In a gist, while the book is marred by errors of syntax, smooth transitioning between events, and implausibility in places even for a fantasy novel, it makes for a one-time read for its creativity, relatability to a revolution, and beautiful presentation of emotions.

"Ekaki" by Harssh Singh is a haunting and poignant tale that takes readers deep into the enigmatic Jatinga Valley, where birds mysteriously plummet to their deaths, mirroring the tragic life of the protagonist, Rewa. The story is set in the early 20th century and is narrated through Rewa's diary entries, which are filled with sorrow, fear, and an eerie connection to death.

Rewa, a young girl, is forced to live in a cage by her family, who believe she possesses a cursed power—she can foresee the deaths of those she touches. Her isolation is profound, as her own mother fears and despises her, and her father, though somewhat protective, is ultimately powerless to change her fate. The narrative is rich with symbolism, with the cage representing not only Rewa's physical confinement but also the emotional and psychological imprisonment she endures.

Singh's writing is lyrical, blending the natural mystique of the Jatinga Valley with the grim reality of Rewa's life. The author's portrayal of Rewa's visions is particularly harrowing, as she is plagued by the deaths she predicts but is unable to prevent. These visions are described with vivid, unsettling detail, making the reader feel Rewa's agony and helplessness.

"Ekaki" is a deeply moving story that explores themes of isolation, fear, and the burden of unwanted power. Singh masterfully captures the despair of a young girl cursed with a gift that only brings her pain, making this a compelling and unforgettable read.

By far my best read of 2024 so far. From the very first page with the diary entry from Rewa stating that she lives in a cage, I knew I was going to be hooked to this story through and through. The concept is fresh and very intriguing. The pacing of the story is amazing as there was not even a single dull moment throughout the story.

Being a very lazy and moody reader, even though I like the idea of highlighting and annotating a book, it seems like a tedious task to me. But as soon as I was done with the first page, I knew I HAD TO highlight this one.

The plot delivers the complexity of the layers of social construct, and the impact of superstitions on the mentality of people. I loved how many parts of the book were in the form of diary entries. Rewa being treated as an abomination and an outcast, there are instances where I felt so sorry for her that I was gasping. It's not an easy thing to make me react while reading, but Ekaki did the job.

To summarise it, I had very high expectations from this book and it would be insulting to say the book didn't disappoint, because it delivered much more than I expected. I highly recommend this to everyone looking for a paranormal and spooky read.

"Ekaki" is a remarkable debut that combines elements of history, fantasy, and thriller. It's a gripping and emotionally resonant tale that will appeal to readers who enjoy stories of personal and political struggle, supernatural abilities, and historical drama.

Rewa is a relatable and sympathetic protagonist, grappling with the immense burden of her abilities and the isolation they bring. Her father, Dabir, is portrayed as a loving and supportive figure, adding depth to the story with his unwavering loyalty to his daughter. Peelo and Davon serve as strong supporting characters, representing the conflicting forces of rebellion and oppression.

The book is also rich in historical detail, capturing the atmosphere of pre-independence India with vivid descriptions and well-researched context. The backdrop of the revolutionary movement against British rule adds a layer of urgency and realism to the narrative. Singh does an excellent job of highlighting the complexities and sacrifices involved in the struggle for freedom.

The novel is entertaining and thought-provoking, leaving readers eagerly anticipating his next work.

Her prediction of Peelo's death propels her into a dangerous revolutionary plot, adding layers of intrigue and suspense.
The revelation of her family's dark secrets and the formidable antagonist, Davon, heighten the stakes, making it impossible to put down. Rewa's journey of self-discovery and her race against time to decipher her powers is both thrilling and emotionally resonant. This story occurs in and around Chittagong during the pre-independence era. It’s about a simple poor family of five—a father, a mother, and their three children. Every family has a secret, and so does this family: the father is a part of a revolutionary army, the mother, who looks like a stable, simple homemaker, was a part of a crime group, but their biggest secret is their first child, Reva. Parallelly, we find a tribal group who are in search of Jhara, and a British officer is in search of his son Daniel. On the other side, there is Suraj Roy with his group fighting for independence. Grab the book to know the connection between these different tracks and their knot with Reva. Grab the book to know the Ekaki.

This story is a perfect blend of history and mystery, with every emotion like pain, struggle, innocence, greed, rightfulness, wrongdoing, and magic. Every character is scripted precisely, but the author’s work with Dabri is the best. On the whole, this book is a brilliant page-turner.

'Ekaki' by Harssh Singh is an enthralling read that revolves around Rewa. I picked this up for two reasons : One, the ability of the program to forsee deaths, and two, the book cover. With such a quality, everyone would definitely go away from the person. However, her father was a savior.

This is set in the pre independence era, and the author has masterfully crafted out how this unique quality of Ekaki helped her to overthrow the British rule. I could totally appreciate the way Ekaki's character is portrayed, and the story keeps you hooked from beginning to end.

There are various expressions and themes that come and go. I am gifting this to a person in my bookclub during the book exchange for sure.
