The Cat's Fancy - Protector

Rate this book
A charming fairy tale romance from NYT and USA Today bestselling author Julie Kenner aka J.

There are people in this world who believe in magic, who search for the possibility in their daily lives . . .

Focused attorney Nicholas Goodman is not one of those people. A rising star in a major law firm, Nick has all the pieces of his life in a great career, financial success, and a girlfriend whose father is one of his major clients. Everything in his life is neat and orderly—until the day Nick opens his door and finds a green-eyed, dark-haired beauty standing there. And she happens to be totally naked.

To these people, love is just as magical as a unicorn in your driveway . . .

Maggie is one-hundred percent, head-over-heels in love with Nicholas. He’s kind and smart and sexy, and she’s certain he’s the man for her. There’s just one Maggie’s not exactly human. But through the power of magic, she’s given a chance. She has one week to make Nick fall in love with her.
One week to make “happily ever after” a reality.

A Fun Read

J. Kenner writes a fun, witty fairytale that even feature's a wicked witch. Or an evil Ice Queen. With an enchanted cat, lawyer Nicholas is on the fast track to making partner. He's engaged to the daughter of his most important client and if he can close this latest deal, then he'll be set for life. So why do the most important people in his life dislike his fiancé so?

Very cute story. Interesting premise. I thought it was going to be a short story. So many, many typos. There were also a bunch of random letters that popped up everywhere. Very annoying and took me out of the story. The line spacing was off as well. It was hard to tell when the story changed from person to person or chapter to chapter. The sentences kinda ran together. I would like to know what happens with Deena and Hoop.

I'm going through my stacks of books and re-reading them because I have to thin down my library. I'm keeping the really good ones but getting rid of the rest.

I had a rough time with this one. On the one hand, I liked virtually everyone in the book. On the other hand, I was rather offended by the taint of beastiality. I have a black cat. I don't like thinking of her being sexy in anyone's eyes.

If it hadn't been for the beastiality, I'd have given this five stars.

A prequel to the Superhero Central paranormal romance series (and part of the Time of Your Life series) with the focus on Maggie and Nicholas Goodman.

My Take
Not what I was expecting. Cute romance though. A cat has fallen in love with her human and , in true fairy tale fashion, is granted a week in which to get her human to tell her he loves her. Between twilight and dawn she transforms into a sexy woman working her feline wiles on her love, and during the day, this kitten tortures his fiancée.

Sweet and endearing and without the punch of Kenner's usual style.

The Story
Straight-laced Nicholas Goodman's life was going just fine. All the aspects of his life were tucked neatly into nice little corners, just the way Nick liked it. Until he opened his door and found a completely naked, slightly befuddled, green-eyed beauty on his doorstep.

Maggie had found the man of her dreams — Nick Goodman. He was smart, sexy, and she knew he loved her. Maggie's only problem was ... well, she wasn't entirely human. But Maggie was determined, and through the power of love she was given a chance — and a lithe woman's body. She had one week to convince Nicholas to admit that he loved her. One week to prove that a guy like Nick could fall for "a girl like Maggie". One week to prove that a cat's fancy could be the love of a lifetime.

The Characters
Maggie isn't entirely human. In fact, she's a cat. Nick's cat.

Nicholas Goodman is a straight-laced hotshot attorney who is engaged to a client's cold-blooded daughter, Angela. Deena is Nick's artist sister. Hoop is his best friend and Angela hates him.

Charming story. Maggie, a cat, makes a wish to become human because she's in love with Nicholas, her owner. She has a week to make him say he loves her. After her transformation, she shows up on his doorstep naked and does her best to seduce him, but Nicholas has a fiance and is a workaholic. His best friend and sister end up helping Maggie win him over.

I've encountered this formula a few times before and sometimes it totally turns me off. Guru Guru Ponchan (manga with the same theme, only a dog rather than cat) totally grossed me out. In this book though, cats are portrayed as being sort of magical creatures themselves, so it didn't seem quite so wrong. I really liked how freaked out and off balance Nicholas was when Maggie showed up on his doorstep naked, and then again when she crashed his party wearing a cat suit.

One thing I didn't quite like was his fiance, Angela. She was just too hateful a character and it was kind of immature--sort of like Cinderella having such evil stepsisters. It would have been just as good if she'd been a decent person who just was a bad match for him. It was hard for me to respect or like a hero who would be engaged to a woman for whom he had so little liking and respect. I also disliked his sister and his best friend's attitude toward her, and how he put up with it. They called her names behind her back and made fun of her to her face. She gave as good as she got, but the situation was very distasteful.

The Cat’s Fancy by Julie Kenner
Prequel to Protectors/Superhero Series
Maggie is a cat. Literally. And she has fallen in love with her owner. He’s engaged to marry a female but Maggie’s cat senses tell her it’s all wrong. Old Tom gives her one week to get her man to fall in love with her and tell her so. And she only has the nights to convince him….as a woman that is. The daytime she’s still his beloved pet, Maggie the cat.

Nick Goodman has taken care of his sister Deena since their parents died. Sometime in the past eight years he’d become someone different. He worked for a law firm that did what could to get what they wanted. He no longer had fun and he was marrying for a partnership, not love. When a beautiful naked woman shows up on his doorstep it changes all the plans he had and has him rethinking his life.

The Protectors/Superhero Series begins with Aphrodite’s Kiss. In the first book Nick and Maggie are mentioned often as Deena Goodman is friends with the main character, Zoe. If you enjoy reading series I think you’ll enjoy the next book more after knowing Maggie’s story.

The plot is pretty simple. So is the storytelling. A cat, Maggie, falls in love with her own, Nick, and is enchanted to be human, only at night, for one week. He has to admit he loves her in that one week or else she goes back to being a cat. Easy story that you know how it will end, no real surprised during the storytelling, but it’s cute and heartwarming, and Nick has good friends who help make up a subplot of the story. Unfortunately I would have liked to have seen that plot a bit more fleshed out, and Maggie is obviously a bit child-like which borders on creepy at times as Nick salivates over her. Nick’s fiancée is stereotypical queen bitch with no real depth to her character. In fact, there isn’t any real depth to this novel.

So why would I still give it 4 stars? Great writing to tell a predictable story and sometimes a person just wants to read a heartwarming tale as opposed something overly dramatic that fails in execution. Maybe I was just in the right mood for it. Either way, I recommend it for a cute, simple love story.

Maggie, a black cat, has fallen in love with her owner Nicholas. She goes to the head cat (wth?) and asks to be made human. He grants her the wish under the condition that she has until Halloween (just over a week away) to make him say "I love You". This book was so cheesy! The romance parts were pretty bad. The only redeeming part of this book was the awesome side characters, Deenie and Hoop. Some parts of Maggie finding 'her feet' in the real world were cute. This plot could have made for a fun, lighthearted paranormal story but it just doesn't work here. I apologize to Julie Kenner because everything else I've read by her has been golden.

The Cat's Meow

The Cat's Fancy is a wacky, fun filled story about a cat who's in love with her master and is granted the ability to change into a human woman during night time hours and transforms back into a cat during the day. If she can make her master says the words "I love you" to her by the deadline, she can remain a woman, but if not, she must remain a cat for the rest of her 9 lives. Can Maggie the cat fulfil her dreams in time? Take this funny trip through her crazy experiences and enjoy the trip.

Awesome story. Maggie is Nick's cat, has been for 3 years, and she has fallen in love with him. She's given about a week to get Nick to fall in love with her but she's only human during the night and she can't tell him that she's his cat.

The characters were great, I loved Nick's sister Deena and his best friend Hoop who are helping Maggie get Nick even though they think she lost her memory and only knows that she loves Nick.

It was cute and funny. Great read!

This is such a cute story that I find myself thinking back on it at times. That doesn't happen very often. I adore Maggie, both the cat and the human, as does everyone in the book. I LOVE her reaction to the human side of things and though I'm not a cat owner, I've been around them enough to believe Ms. Kenner did a great job of catching that inherent attitude. I recommend this to any lover of cats and/or romance.

I randomly picked on of my free kindle books to read while waiting for my pizza and started this one. It was good enough that I finished it later that night.

This is the cat lover's version of The Little Mermaid. It's fun, light, and firmly in the "sweet romance" sub-genre. The author does a good job of handling the transition from cat to human and in a funny and not overbearing way.

There are no real surprises in the plot, but it's a fun journey getting there anyway.

"The Cat's Fancy" by Julie Kenner is the prequel novel to the Superhero Series. Maggie is a cat that wants to be human because she is in love with her owner, Nicolas. Nicolas is about to get married to an awful woman. Can Maggie convince Nicolas that he loves her? Or will she be forced to live out nine lives as a cat? Overall, this is a cute romance. Kenner's characters are very likable. I really enjoyed reading it and hope that you love it too!

This is a cute story if you like cats. The heroine is a cat during the day in fact she is Nicholas' cat. But she wants to be more so she begs Old Tom to be something else and he allows her to be human during the night. The catch Nicholas has to declare his love to her within a month. Cute, sweet nothing major. Just a sweet simple romance!

Maggie the cat has fallen in love with her owner Nicholas. She is given the opportunity to become a human at night for one week with the caveat that must get Nicholas to say he loves her by the end of the week or stay a cat forever.

Absolutely charming. Maggie is so innocent and fresh-faced, a real joy to read about. Nick is a little more resistant, but still is a great guy.

This book was to die for! I loved it and couldn't quit reading it from start to finish. It's about a cat who falls for her owner and would do anything to have him for herself. She is a cat during the day and a human during the night..what an oddity right... Nick does fall for the girl, there is something familiar about her but she doesn't know who she is..or so she says.

Not my favorite of this series. I may never be able to change clothes in front of my dog again. :) But it was cute. The best part was seeing the characters from the other books before they were in the other books. In retrospect I am glad I read this one last.

How did this get four stars? I picked it up for .99 thinking it would be at least amusing, but it was barely that. I at least can say it was easy enough to read (despite grammatical errors and typos), but I barely finished it. It was THAT bad. Not even a so bad it's good. Just bad.

This book sounded hilarious when I first heard about it. A cat falls in love with her owner and pulls a "Little Mermaid"? But it's actually charming and adorable and I loved it. Seriously, I was smiling for the entire last half of the book. SO CUTE. Read it if you can find it!

I read this quite a few years ago, so a lot of details are lost to me at the moment, including character names, and the actual date I read it. (I even had to enlist help to find the title, sadly...) I did once have a copy of my own, but it was lost to a flood, and the sands of time.

However - I have never forgotten this book, and I've always wanted to obtain a new (or used!) copy of it again.

In short, it's a very cute story with a happy ending, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes cute, fluffy romance, or likes romance in general, and needs a break from more serious things.
