Wow! Another great volume to the series. The games are so interesting and fun. I like being able to try and piece together how it’s going to play out (even though I’m always wrong) but it’s super fun.
We got some more development between Tang Mo and Wu Fu Wenduo too hehe 😜 Nothing major, but I just happen to think that treating each others wounds so closely and doing combat training together is a little… *wink* *wink*
They work so well together too. I loved seeing them interact more in this volume compared to the other ones. I’m very interested in some of the characters we saw in some of the games too. Some pretty creepy ones too at that. I’m sure we’ll see them again soon.
This series makes me laugh so hard sometimes at the most unexpected moments. Tang Mo has really rotten luck with the phrases he has to use in order to use his abilities. I laughed my fair share reading this.
I can’t wait to read the next one but I don’t wanna rush into it cause I have no idea when the next volumes are coming out ): but I’ll patiently wait.
“So… want to team up for the next floor challenge?”
The first thing I want to talk about is the book itself because Rosmei never disappoints when it comes to quality. The cover is simple, and I think it fits the story perfectly. I also love that there aren’t any character illustrations on the front cover. It has French flaps instead of a dust jacket. The pages are the usual smooth, cream colored paper Rosmei always uses, and they’re comfortable to read for hours. At this point, I still think Rosmei makes the best English printed danmei novels. Manhua is a different story, but for novels, they’re still my favorite. As for the story, I like that it wasn’t just another collection of spire games. It feels like the world is getting bigger, and little by little we’re learning there’s much more going on than what we’ve seen so far. I also appreciate the slower moments between challenges because they gave everyone a chance to just exist outside of the games. It made the characters feel more like actual people instead of players waiting for the next mission.
One thing I really like was the second challenge because it didn’t feel like everything revolved around Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo. For a while, it almost felt like they weren’t even the main characters, and I actually enjoyed that. It gave other characters a chance to stand out, and by the end of the volume, I got the feeling some of them are going to become much more important later on. I also loved how they kept running into new people throughout the book. Some only stick around for a short time, some become allies, and others end up on the opposite side. It makes the world feel alive because you never know who’s going to show up next or whether you’ll ever see them again. I also appreciate that the story doesn’t pretend everyone survives. Deaths aren’t quietly brushed aside. Some are confirmed, while others are only hinted at, and I like that uncertainty because it fits the world they’re living in. One thing I noticed is that some of the games have so many rules, exceptions, and conditions that I had to slow down and re-read parts just to make sure I understood everything. I still enjoy how creative the games are, but there were definitely moments where I had to pause and catch up.
I have to mention Tang Mo because I laughed when I found out he gets motion sickness. I relate to that so much. Mine is probably worse, though. Cars make me dizzy, so I usually just sleep during the ride, and first person shooter games leave me feeling nauseous for hours. I wasn’t expecting something so random to be one of my favorite little details, but it made him feel even more real to me. This volume also made me care about more than just getting through the next challenge. I found myself looking forward to seeing familiar faces again, meeting new characters, and learning more about the world instead of only wondering who would clear the next game. It wasn’t a perfect volume, but I had a really good time with it. It answered a few questions, raised even more, and made me excited to keep reading because it feels like the story is only getting started.
5- sao.
