That Last Secret: A Brothers Best Friend Romance

Rate this book
All secrets kept in the dark eventually come to light.

Being the youngest Ford sibling and the only girl out of the four of us, I feel like the bar is set high for me.

My brothers have built very successful lives for themselves and the pressure to live up to them is often too much for me to handle.

But I don't tell them that.
I keep my struggles to myself.
I can handle everything on my own.

Until I can't ... and the only person I can get a hold of is my brother’s best friend.

Logan Bennett shows up to the rescue like a knight in shining armor. Only he isn't on a horse. He's on a motorcycle, and because he's older than me, he's completely off limits.

The problem is, I've always had a crush on him.
And in one night, everything changes between us.

Adding to the long list of things I keep from my brothers won't hurt, right?
It might once they find out about that last secret .

** That Last Secret is a steamy, brothers best friend romance that is packed with emotions but will also make you blush. This book is intended for mature readers only. This is a stand-alone and can be read on it's own but the timeline does cross books 2 + 3. For a list of potential triggers, please see the authors note.

I did not like this book. I did not dnf it because it didn't have irritating factors but it did nothing to my reading palate.

The story starts in November and ends two and a half years later. For the first year and a half we have a recount of some (and I use the term some loosely) interactions every freaking month. They're so hot and cold with each other. The jumps in the timeline are irritating.
Example, he tells her he can't have her but still he wants her. Next thing we know, it's one month later! 🤔 wait what did I miss?
And it goes on and on.

Logan is Emiline's big brothers' best friend. There's an age gap of 8 years. When she's 21 he suddenly sees her differently, not as his bestfriends' little sister but as a beautiful young woman and he decides to hate her on the spot because she's making him feel something!

She had a massive crush on him when she was 18 but she finally shoved those feelings in a trunk because he never gave her the time of day. Except! As a baby sister.

They keep pining for each other for so long not wanting to make a move because he's traumatised that he might leave whoever he loves behind (since he's a cop and his dad died on the job leaving his wife and son broken) so he swore off relationships and ALSO her brothers would kill him because he has the reputation of a player.
She doesn't want a relationship because A) her brothers 🙄 B) she's too busy with school and work and dealing with anxiety.

After a long tennis-resembling match of back and forth they give in "secretly".

At this point, I just wanted to finish the book any way possible just so I can reach my reading quota of this year.

I did like the drama at the end, it stirred emotions in me 😁 but have to say the ending was lovely, ergo, 2 stars 🌟.

I was so happy to read the last book in Jen’s debut series. After allllll the breadcrumbs Jen had been dropping like she’s the old woman from Hansel and Gretel, Logan and Emiline’s story was SO perfect for them. It was fun, great banter, full of tender and sweet moments and lots of emotion that I was not expecting!

Emiline — a chronic over thinker, iced peppermint mocha lover and feeling the pressure to live up to the standards of her older brothers. Logan — married to his job and carrying around grippling guilt from his childhood which prevents him letting anyone get close. Both Emiline and Logan hide behind facets of their personalities to mask their trauma.

I absolutely adored the way that Emiline and Logan built a genuine friendship and trusting each other with their secrets. I loved the growth between them, how Logan continually showed up for Emiline and building her confidence. Both Logan and Emiline went through it together, they were such a perfect match and that secret 🥹🥹🥹🥹

I’ve really enjoyed this series, and so proud of Jen for such a fabulous debut series! Can’t wait to see what she does next!

GRAB YOUR TISSUES FOLKS BECAUSE THIS IS EMOTIONAL PERFECTION !!!!

Logan + Emiline’s forbidden relationship because she is 1000% off limits for being his best friend’s little sister !!!!! Throughout the first half of the book we are finally learning all the backstory of these two (that we have been seeing through the rest of the series) and why they have the most longing, epic, tension of all time . Which is followed by part two which is the most emotionally damaged, gut wrenching words but that lead to the most beautiful HEA !

Such a good book and a great way to wrap up the time we have spent in this city and with all of these wonderful characters ! I am so excited to see what Jenn is going to bring us next in the romance world because her writing is fan-freaking-tastic !!

This is book four in the Firsts in the City series and it can be read as a complete standalone .

This book was given to me for honest review by the author .

You know when you read an interconnect series and there are two people that keep showing up that make you question what's going on and you can't wait for them to get a book? Yeah, well That Last Secret is the book that I have been so patiently awaiting. We finally get Emiline and Logan's story and it was everything that I could have hoped for. I got butterflies, I giggled, I blushed and I even cried. I experienced every emotion.

Logan and Emiline's story will take you on a rollercoaster. You will definitely need to work for their happy ever after, but it is so worth it. This book takes you over a year long time period. Time will jump because that's when their relationship started. You will see their side of certain events that occurred in other books. Is this a slow burn? Yes, yes it is. But you guys it is so necessary for their story. I don't want to give too much away because it will give away when their relationship initially started but to see Emiline start off as Logan's best friends baby sister, then to see him actually SEE her, then turn into this person who he can't stop thinking about, then turn into a friend and then a lover... ugh it was everything. The progression of their relationship was everything I wanted and more.

I have absolutely loved Logan throughout this series so for him to finally get a book so we could get to know him more made me so happy. He is so much more than we thought he was. The same goes for Emiline as well. Both of them are dealing with their own demons silently and they become each other's support systems. They provide a sense of comfort for one another. And the friendship that buds from this is so beautiful and sets a strong foundation for a relationship.

Now I will say, this book gets slightly emotional. If you read the last book in the series, then you know that something happens to Logan in the epilogue and this books prologue starts where that ends. I started this book tearing up and I was anxiously awaiting for that moment to happen. I'm not going to lie, even with me knowing this moment was going, I still shed a tear. My heart broke for these two. But have no fear, Jenn will tear your heart to pieces but will put it back together.

This book is the best in the series for me. Personally I just resonated with these two the most. I was looking forward to their story and I am so happy to see them finally get their happy ever after. But it makes me sad that this series has come to an end.

You should most definitely read this book if you like:
- Brother's Best Friend
- Forbidden/Secret Relationship
- Police Officer x Nurse
- Age Gap
- Mental Health Rep
- Tad Bit Emotional
- She's Had a Crush on Him for YEARS

* I would like to say thank you to Jenn McMahon for allowing me the pleasure to read That Last Secret as an ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts, opinions and review.

I’m going to be crying while writing this review. I absolutely do not want this series to be over. I stumbled upon the audiobook for 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑵𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 and fell in love with this group fictional characters. Emiline and Logan’s story has been a long time coming but it was so worth the wait! Jenn delivered an absolute gem. I laughed, fell in love and cried, right along side these characters. 💞

Get your tissues ready, I started off this story by crying but the ending was literally perfection!

Logan’s entire world is his career as a police officer, following in his father’s footsteps. He never let himself be in a serious relationship because of how dangerous his job could be. Logan did not want to fall in love with his best friend’s little sister. He fought his feelings but the chemistry between them was just too good!

Emiline has always felt like she has to do something amazing with her life because of how successful her older brothers are. When she decided to go into nursing she devoted all of her time and energy into it. Her family is very protective of her so she’s kept her struggles with anxiety secret. Now she’s crushing hard on her brother’s best friend while trying desperately to pass all of her classes.

They both have secrets, but somehow they find themselves relying more and more on each other.

I can’t rave about this book enough. I have struggled with anxiety for my whole life and I feel like the way Jenn depicted Emiline’s anxiety was spot on. This book deals with a lot of emotional topics but they are each handled so well.

“𝘐𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘴𝘪𝘯, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘥𝘭𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯. 𝘐𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘐'𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘩𝘦𝘳.“

The spicy tension and chemistry between Logan and Emiline freaking melted me. This book shows us how their relationship developed over the course of the first 3 books so it’s a bit of a slow burn. The burn was so worth the wait! They literally couldn’t keep their hands off each other! 🤭❤️‍🔥

"𝘚𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘣𝘦𝘨."

If you love brother’s best friend romances full of heart and emotions, you HAVE to add 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭 𝐛𝐲 𝐉𝐞𝐧𝐧 𝐌𝐜𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐨𝐧, to your TBR! It can be read as a standalone but to fully appreciate all of the characters and how far Logan & Emiline have come, I highly recommend starting with 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑵𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕! (The audiobooks for this series are phenomenal!)

Emiline and Logan are the perfect final couple to the series. The tension, banter, sweet moments and chemistry between them is wonderful.
Emiline, one and only,y sister of Overprotective Ford brothers and Logan their best friend. With all the crumbs and pieces from the previous book they finally come together. It was fun to read all the simultaneous events taking place from different books and reliving those moments. From the first book till now this series is like a found family.

They both went through much yet overcame their demons to be together. I am sad to part ways with this one.

Final Rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️

This book was such a beautiful exploration of mental health and finding your person, despite everything working against you. I loved the way that Logan supported Emiline throughout the novel and the amount of growth the two characters went through was so heartwarming to read. The mental health representation was so well written and I found myself repeating the things Logan said to Em in reassurance to myself throughout the novel, and I will likely come back to when I am anxious and doubting myself. This is a very fast paced novel and was the perfect palate cleanser between heftier fantasy novels. This had a slight forbidden romance element to it, which lead to dating in secret, but was full of really cute moments between the MC's. The vulnerability the two MC's were willing to share with each other was perfect 😭 This is technically the last in the series but can most definitely be read as a standalone (which I did)! I am super excited to go back and read the rest of the series!

Em and Logan's story was perfect for them. I think what made it better was the long span over which it takes place - the slow burn made the tension so swoon worthy that their first kiss had me squealing!!!!!

I loved their vulnerable sides more, NGL. I am angst girlie and being in Logan and Em's head in their most vulnerable moments and letting them be the shoulder for each other - being each other's person - was the most beautiful thing. It served me so well.

It could have a little more exploring of their characters - their friendships and relationships with the family especially. A lot of it felt like all tell and I just wanted more. Except Silas and Brooke, every other relationship felt a little superficial, like I know they all loved each other but I didn't feel the impact really.

For a debut series Jenn has done splendid work and I can't wait to go back and read Peyton and Avery's book as well.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to ARC read ♥️

I loved this book for so many reasons! One being that I related to our main character. Emiline suffers with really bad panic attacks, and from someone who's also suffers from them, I can say it was done really well. There were so many times I felt for her and just wanted to give her a hug.😭

Another reason is our characters' relationship. They were honestly perfect for each other. Logan was so patient with her and willing to try and understand how and why her panic attacks start while also trying to calm her. He made sure she wasn't being so hard on herself while she made sure he was living in the present and not the future.

I NEED to go and read the other books in this series immediately! Jeans writing was so easy to read, I literally flew through this book.

How am I supposed to function? Why would you do this to me Jenn 😭😭😭 I'm not fine at all! I want more of this! This couple! This series! This world! This was something beyond beautiful and heartbreaking and wholesome! 😭😍
Emmy and Logan were the perfect ones for each other and they felt so right together! They've been to hell and back and I JUST AM SO OBSESSED WITH THEM! *happy tears*

I can't believe this series is over and I won't be eagerly waiting for the little snippets to drop off anymore!
But it was such a beautiful experience reading this and I am in love with the writing, the representation of anxiety and mental health and just the sweet romance in the book. It tugged at each of my heartstrings.

We learn about Logan and Emiline’s story in bits and pieces from previous books. Although it is not necessary to read them, this reader recommends that you do. The characters have been present, but now we get their thoughts and feelings.

Be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions and a delicious slow burn as the story spans a chunk of time. Trust the author's process; the story needs to be told this way. The progression of the relationship from best friend's little sister to more.

I loved this series, and I am excited to see what comes next.

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

God this book was beautiful but also tough.
I'm still unsure if that ending was the right choice but in overall this book was amazing to portray the daily struggles and how scary it may feel to be vulnerable with someone else and show them the dark parts of you. It's healing and I really like that it's definitely was different from the other books of this series. I literally read it in just a couple of hours. Their chemistry also was incredible and even though I was tired at one point of the hot and cold and the stubbornness to just go with it I felt like I could understand it later on as each character shared more of each other. So yeah this one is a major slow burn so be ready for patience 🙏

My biggest issue with the book was the character trait of Emy.

I feel that the author could have focused more on anxiety, self-worth, and feeling inferior to her siblings achievements, rather than solely on her panic attacks. The reasons for her panic attacks felt unrealistic, and it was concerning that no one in her environment seemed to notice as they where so recurrent .While anxiety can be hidden, panic attacks are harder to conceal; it’s hard to believe that no one knew about them.

Additionally, there’s a point where Logan suggests she go to therapy, and she responds, "Oh, would you really go for me?" He says yes, but then the topic is never revisited, and she never goes to therapy. For someone experiencing such severe panic attacks, this lack of action feels unhealthy and unrealistic.

I think the story would have been stronger if the author had shifted focus from panic attacks to the protagonist’s exploring her journey toward self-acceptance and love. It's not just about what Logan tells her whats right and wrong; she needs to grow on her own. Their relationship is very codependent, which can be toxic. If circumstances change and that person leaves your life, you shouldn’t be entirely dependent on them. Each person should cultivate their own growth and put in the effort individually for true healing to take place.

Nevertheless i still liked it so ...

I recommend you this one

First I want to say thank you to Jenn McMahon for the opportunity to read this early🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

oh my goodness😩 Jenn really said if I'm ending this series I'm ENDING you with it bc the prologue itself was enough to have me stressed out. this book had me actually laughing out loud and kicking my feet and then had the audacity to destroy me. I mean I was UGLY SOBBING but it's okay I swear. I usually am not a fan of stories having the "then and now" timeline but I absolutely LOVED this book the whole way through 🥹 Jenn did such a great job and this was such a perfect way to end the series even though I'm devastated it's finally over.

Logan and Em were there for each other while they both dealt with their mental struggles in the exact way the other needed. They could not be more perfect for each other. They were soooooo close to being my favorite couple in the series but Oliver and Macey will forever hold that title 🫶🏽

I've said it before and I'm saying it again if you haven't read this series you need to do it now, I don't make the rules!!!

⚠️This book touched on some sensitive topics so make sure to check TW before reading

BUCKLE UP BUTTERCUP AND GRAB THE TISSUES!!! 😭🩷

We have been SO so excited for Logan and Emiline’s story from the get go because hello? Brother’s best friend? Forbidden romance? She’s totally off limits?! Yeah, right up my freaking alley. And let me tell you, Jenn delivered and wrapped up the series BEAUTIFULLY.

I loved how the first part of the book is bringing us up to speed with everything that has transpired between them throughout the previous books so we have a clear understanding of how they get to where they get. The tension was tensionin’. The sexual chemistry was off the charts. The way that Logan was there for Emiline and the way that she was there for him on an emotional level?!!!!! Stop it. They’re so cute.

But part two?!? Emotional damage. It was gut wrenching. Heartbreaking. Just truly gets you in your feels and ugh. But don’t worry, Jenn makes sure we end it on the best HEA note and I was crying happy tears after my sad traumatic tears lmao

Jenn, you did an amazing job wrapping up the series and making us fall even more in love with them. But thank you so much for how you spoke about anxiety and the experience of an anxiety/panic attack, the pressures that you can put on yourself, and how beautiful it is when you have the right people around you that you can lean on for support. Truly a beautiful book and I loved it all so much!!

That Last Secret is the fourth and final book of the Firsts In The City series. And boy did she save the best for last-WOW!!

Tropes:
🩵 brothers best friend

🩵 age gap (by almost 8 years)
🩵 she’s supposed to be off limits
🩵 mental health rep

I fell I love with these characters when they were introduced in the first book. Throughout the series Jenn gave us little sneaky tidbits that lead up to the beautiful relationship of Logan and Emiline. It was definitely a slow burn that had me yelling, “JUST FREAKING KISS HER!” But once they finally gave in they couldn’t get enough of one another.

Emiline has been keeping secrets from her brothers. She is severely struggling and doing it all alone- until one night she calls for help from Logan, her brother’s best friend. Not only is there an insane attraction between Logan and Em, he has become a comfort for her that she so desperately needed. But there’s a problem-her brothers would kill Logan for messing with their little sister. So what do they do- they sneak around. What’s one more secret, right?

Oh my gosh, this story!!! I felt the heat, the tension, the longing between these characters. I absolutely loved their relationship and the bond that they built. This is a beautiful love story that will shatter your heart at times. There were many tears shed but also lots of laughs. This is by far my favorite of the series. Logan and Emiline have my heart!!

Just perfect!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Side note- As someone that suffers from anxiety, I believe Jenn did a wonderful job at portraying mental illness and how it affects our everyday lives.

First of all, I love a good dedication.

Finally getting Emeline and Logan’s story was everything I thought it would be. I don’t know what i was expecting from either one of them but they were just about perfect. Em was both strong and fragile and Logan was loyal and protective and everything a girl could want in a book boyfriend. I loved how the two of them “happened” was like going back in time to the three other books in the series. Part two broke me briefly - I knew it wouldn’t last long and ended the read smiling.

Loved everything about this book! The forbidden -secret love relationship. The banter between Emiline and Logan! So much pining, wishing, wanting and hoping for one of them then to make a move! Like we could see how perfect there two would be for each other- they should see it!! The desire and build up in this slow burn relationship was perfect and once they finally did give into feelings I felt all the feels!

“I never thought I would ever experience being consumed by another person to the point where everything around me would fade out, but that’s how it feels standing in front of Logan.”

Can you say freaking emotional?!!

The last book in the Firsts in the City series and certainly my favorite 😭😭

Emiline and Logan were EVERYTHING. I’ve been waiting for this book for years it feels like but it was so so worth the wait. I love these two and their journey so much. Well most of it. That bit at the end was rude AF ma’am.

Getting to see the behind the scenes of so many moments from the first three books and how these two built such a beautiful friendship/relationship was amazing.

I can not even behind to describe what my favorite parts were. It was all so beautiful.

I never wanted this book to end. 😫

Can we please have a bonus epilogue of the gang many many years down the line?! 😭😭

I love them all so much.

I don’t cry reading many books. But I did for this one. It was so beautiful from beginning to end. I definitely recommend the First In The City Series.

So underwhelming. Had higher expectations. It was just not good the way the other books were in the series.

Just WOW. This book is brother’s best friend perfection. We have been begging for this book from the beginning and Jenn absolutely delivered.

That Last Secret is the story of Emiline and Logan. Their story is filled with longing, secrets, heartbreak and so much love. They go from friends, to enemies, back to friends and finally to lovers. This story had me smiling at the banter between the two mcs and then ugly crying and cursing Jenn for breaking my heart.

Emiline is the youngest of the Ford siblings and is working on her nursing degree. Her character is full of heart and dedication. But sweet Emiline carries a secret that no one knows about. Until her brother’s best friend Logan shows her that it’s ok to open up and lean on someone.

Logan is a police officer that is on track to be chief soon. His soul focus in life has been his job. Logan has been firm on his decision to never allow himself to love or be loved by a woman. Logan’s character is crippled by guilt from his childhood and he is terrified to allow anyone close in fear of losing them.

Logan really tried to fight his attraction to her obviously because she’s the sister of his best friend and she’s totally off limits. He knows that Emiline is a relationship type girl and he can’t give her that.

Logan soon becomes the person Emiline calls on when things get to be too much. Their friendship turns into more no matter how hard they tried to fight it.

Thank you Jenn for the opportunity to read and review this advanced copy. It was truly an honor.

I have been so excited for this book after how That First Flight ended. But unfortunately it fell flat for me. Hit a little too close to home for me. I have read a couple LEO and Nurse MCs and didn't think it would be an issue for me. I LOVE brother's best friend and I know how "forbidden" it feels but for what seems like almost half of the book it goes back and forth between "no we can't do this but I really want to," it felt too repetitive for me. I also have come to realize that I'm not a fan of when something big happens in the prologue and you know its coming and the whole book is leading up to that moment again.

I wish the last part after the "accident" would've been a little longer. I really did enjoy that part of the book! I loved seeing the POVs from Emiline's brothers and how they were truly happy for her and Logan. Logan was attentive to Emiline and truly would do just about anything for the woman he loves.

Read if you love:
- brother's best friend
- forbidden love
- emotional damage
- nursing student to nurse x police officer

Thank you Jenn for the opportunity to read this arc in exchange for my honest opinion and review.
