I never expected my first year of residency to be easy. However, returning home after eight years brings more trouble than I was prepared for.
When I’m captivated by a painting through a shop window, I discover the painter is none other than Logan Delaney.
She hates me, a fact she made perfectly clear before I left town.
The first time she touches me, it awakens a deep desire. To be touched again. By her. Can we both move on from the past? Or will she break my heart like she planned to do all along?
Logan Delaney
My brother’s death was the catalyst that brought this storm into my life, one that’s left a path of destruction in its wake. I’ve survived but just barely.
Then she returns to town. Elise Novak. She was there the night my brother died, the night that’s left me with more questions than answers. The night she claims not to remember.
I’d love nothing more than to show her just how vicious a storm can be.
When lightning strikes yet again, I don’t know if I’ll make it through. As the lines of hate begin to blur, could Elise be the sunshine I’ve always needed in my life?
When Lightning Strikes is a darkish contemporary sapphic romance featuring enemies to lovers, a bi-awakening, and chronic illness/disability rep.
River Hale is a pseudonym, created because her mother once told her that she'll read everything she ever writes. She's a writer with a tea addiction and a love for everything dark, twisted, haunted, and beautiful. She's written and published more appropriate books that her mother is allowed to read under her real name, but she'll always have a special place in her heart for dark romance.
"My eyes fell in love with the painting while my heart fell in love with the painter"
When Lightning Strikes by River Hale completely surprised me—in the best way. At first glance, I thought it might be just another sapphic dark romance, but wow, it proved me so wrong.
The chemistry between Elise and Logan was such a slow, beautiful burn. From little moments of closeness to full-on vulnerability, their shift from hate to love felt natural and powerful (even if it leaned one-sided at times). I really appreciated that the author didn’t rush anything—by the time they were truly together, you could feel the depth of their connection.
I also have to give credit to how thoughtfully the author handled heavy themes like abusive parents, internalized homophobia, and light, respectful BDSM. Every sensitive topic was approached with care, and it showed.
Elise was an absolute ray of sunshine, and I adored how Logan helped her discover and embrace her sexuality. She was the light in Logan’s storm, and that contrast was written so well. But Logan’s growth… that’s what really got me. She started off as the “bad girl” type, but there was so much more to her. Her backstory broke my heart, and beneath her tough exterior was a soft, vulnerable side that shone through whenever she was with Elise. I also loved how she found healing through painting and tattooing, and how Elise helped her see she was more than her chronic pain. That part nearly had me in tears.
And I can’t forget the writing—it was lyrical with just the right touch of wit, making the story flow perfectly.
My only complaint? River Hale hasn’t published another sapphic book yet. I’ll be first in line when she does.
"She’s still inside me, taking up space. She carved out her own spot in one of my hollow cavities, dusting off the cobwebs and planting her flowers. Even though her physical presence is gone, they’ve left behind her scent. Refusing to whither".
arc review if you’ve read any of rivers work before you will know how amazing it is, and this is book is no different.
one night changed logan’s life forever, and eight years later logan has lost almost her entire family, and now the girl she blames for it all is back in town.
logan wants to make elise hurt for what she’s done to her family, and that’s exactly what she plans to do. until the unexpected happens and elise ends up becoming the sun to her storm.
this is such a beautiful story, with amazing character development and chronic illness/disability rep done so so well WE LOVE TO SEE IT!!
their story tugged on my heartstrings way more than i expected it to, the plot was incredibleeeee.
This was a slightly darker romance but also kind of cute. Two people who are supposedly enemies (I use the term loosely because it's more of a one-sided enemy relationship). Logan has had a bit of a tough life, with one brother dying, the other going to jail for the accident that killed him, her father running off shortly after, and her mother drinking herself into an early grave. Elise lost her best friend and boyfriend in the incident and has quietly mourned but gone on with her life since then, not realising that Logan blames and hates her.
I wish this weren't as fast-paced because we went from the hate-fuelled sex to feelings fairly quickly, but it was an enjoyable read and an engaging mystery about that fateful night.
I was lucky to get an advanced reader copy and I GOBBLED THIS UP. It’s spicy, it’s sweet, it’s real. There are a few moments that felt cheesy and a small amount of grammatical errors, but their story and the imagery/word choice and just everything else kept me interested. There are so many pieces of their story that are relatable, and the story feels sweetly complete for our main characters. <3
SPOILERS START HERE Everything aside from Tate feels settled by the end of this book, which is satisfying. And I feel like we could’ve almost had another book to drag out the Declan plot more! If we had another book it could be from Tate and Declan’s POV? Fun, maybe alternate concept, to explore!

It was incredibly well-written, and I absolutely loved it. I only wish it were a bit less dramatic—it feels like it tries to pack too many ideas into a single book.
When Lightning Strikes was my first read by River Hale. I wasn't sure what to expect, and I was pleasantly surprised. This book was fantastic. It immediately grabbed my attention with the opening scene. It wasn't pretty, but it was realistic and moving. When we are introduced to Logan, she is dealing with her addict mother after the death of her brother tore her family apart. Be sure to check trigger warnings for this one. Elise was her brother's girlfriend and was with him at the time of his death. She doesn't remember what happened and Logan cannot accept an incomplete account of the tragedy. They cross paths again years later in their small town and Logan scapegoats Elise as the easiest target for her loss, pain, and grief. She was looking to place blame and make sense of it all. Initially, she wanted to hurt Elise, but it is clear that she wasn't truly a vindictive person. They have a very interesting and volatile relationship and show a lot of growth throughout. There are heavy topics, some entertaining twists, and a happily ever after. Supporting characters are few but significant. The writing style was engaging, and the pace was spot-on. This was high spice for me with some tropes I haven't read much of yet. They include hate sex, bullying, light S&M, and revenge. The plot was solid for balance, and the character development was strong. Kudos for bi-awakening and disability/chronic illness rep. I am absolutely looking forward to reading more by this author. #Colorado #smalltown #artist #tattooartist #painter #doctorinresidence #drug/alcoholaddiction #dysfunctionalfamily #homophobia #internalizedhomophobia #deathofalovedone #biawakening #toasteroven #revengesex #hatesex #oppositesattracte #grumpy/sunshine #bully #lightS&M #enemiestolovers #HEA #spicy #disability/chronicillnessrep #3rdactbreakup #touchheranddie #kissintherain #grief I received this ARC free from the author. This is my honest opinion.
This reads too much like a dark romance and that's not my thing. I thought this was a normal romance, maybe I should have looked into that more, but especially Logans Pov just gives dark romance. Her thoughts, feelings and actions already make me extremely uncomfortable. And the first spice scene...yeah no thank you.
Sunshine arrives in all forms and I’m so happy Elise and Logan found that. What a wild change of events but I should say I wasn’t surprised with the ending. Such a great read, can’t wait to read more from this author!

FAVORITE QUOTE/QUOTES
My eyes fell in love with the painting. My heart fell in love with the painter.
Because she is the sun, and I'm the storm.
A LITTLE ABOUT THE BOOK/HOW DID IT MAKE ME FEEL This book was a mix of different things and I loved it so much. Mystery, revenge, hurt comfort, who hurt you, I'd kill for you. Every single thing that makes a story amazing. Just one or two of these would have made it great. All of them off the charts.
WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE CHARACTERS I loved all the hurting. Logan had been through so much loss. She was hurting so much. And she wanted to hurt Elise but truly she is a beautiful soul and not someone who could cause harm. I loved that Elise sees past that. And that Elise wanted to be there to help her. And even when Logan wasn't the best it didn't put her off.
WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE BOOK The characters, the storyline, the writing, the twists and turns and the spice. EVERYTHING.
MY FAVORITE PART- IF IT IS NOT TOO SPOILERY My favorite part would be a spoiler-is so I shall hide it
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE Nothing I didn't like...I am curious what the end result was for the person who actually was responsible for Liam's death.

This was the third FF novel I've read, and to my great pleasure it far surpassed the previous two in terms of both writing style and complexity. First of all, the title is spot on. The storm/lightning/sunshine trio was integrated so well into the whole story that it was a pleasure to read. From Logan's tattoo, to her paintings and Elise's nickname, to the climax... It was seriously awesome! In most cases, my problem with female protagonists is that they whine and if they don't have any problems, they make some for themselves. Well, that was not the case here. Logan is a strong, independent woman, thoroughly battered by fate, and Elsie Elise is intelligent, purposeful, and saw right through Logan from the start.
Liam, one of Logan's older brothers, died nine years ago. Landon (the other brother) (funny parents naming their children) is in prison because of it, thanks to the testimony of Declan (Elsie's brother). Elise was also there when the incident happened, but she claims she doesn't remember anything. Logan's family fell apart in no time. The girl is angry with her mother, angry with Elise, angry with the whole world, and constantly searching for answers. I really liked this thread,
I loved watching Logan's hatred for Elise gradually subside. The spicy scenes were also absolutely enjoyable for me - I wasn't sure how I will feel about it, but I didn't feel uncomfortable while reading, so I don't have a single bad word to say.
Tate (Logan's colleague and friend) was a likable supporting character, I would love to read more about him.
This novel provided me an absolutely positive experience, even though I didn't bite my nails to the bone while reading it and the ending wasn't exactly unpredictable, I was still able to immerse myself in the story. This is a very strong four-star-read for me.
I've spent the last week or so thinking about how I wanted to approach this review.
River Hale has written an absolutely wonderful story. The prose is on point, the character development is there and the story has bones. Good ones.
However, there were elements that gave me pause.
The premise of Logan deciding to sleep with Elise as revenge didn't sit well - even if you understand Logan's motivation. Logan and Elise have a history and it's not all sunshine and roses. Logan's brother died and Elise was there. This event is the starting point of their conflict, understandably. However from the get go, Logan's anger and hurt is misdirected. At eighteen, she didn't understand the nuances of the situation and carried her grudge against Elise for years. The loss of her brother changed the trajectory of her life, the lives of her family. Still, this doesn't quite justify to me the almost arrogant and antagonistic attitude Logan has.
Elise was the antithesis of Logan in many ways. Elise's own brother was there that fateful night and it is his character I feel was the most under-utilised here. By the third act, you've pieced together why this oversight means the climax isn't as impactful as it could have been.
I also wasn't particularly impressed with Logan's aggressive attitude towards sex with Elise. Wrapping her hand around Elise's throat paired with her bitterness towards Elise in the beginning just did not sit well with me.
Yet there is sunshine to be found in this story. River writes beautifully and when Logan faces the biggest challenge of her young life, this is where River shines. I did not know when I began this story that River writes about MS from personal experience. These were the times when I loved Logan - not for the fact that she was suffering but for the way she was humbled and by the way she approached her diagnosis. I anticipated Logan becoming even more chip-on-her-shoulder, even more belligerent towards the world. Instead, we finally saw Logan's true self. And when she let Elise in? Nothing could stop those two and that was the heart of the story.
This book is powerful in its honesty and beauty. I love River Hale's writing. I've loved every book. I absolutely loved this book. It's beautiful. It's has integrity, passion, and fire. I loved reading about chronic illness/disability representation. More books need to be written about chronic illness/disability representation. It's important. Check your cw. This may not be the book for you.
Logan and Elise's story wasn't easy , but it was fulfilling to read about. These two women were explosive from the start; exploring every emotion between them. Logans life was full of tragedy. After the death of her younger brother Liam, her family fell apart. Elise was Liam's girlfriend. Logan blamed Elise and her brother for his death and everything that happened afterward.
Eight years later. Logan is an artist, as well as a tattoo artist. Elise comes back after graduating from grad school and buys one of Logan's paintings. Events that transpire after cause them to venture into the unknown. They are attracted to eaxhother, begin a " situantionship", but accidently develop feelings. The spice between these two women is electric, and they are so hot. I haven't read many Sapphic. (ff) and I need to correct that immediately. I loved reading spice between two fmcs that was unbelievably hot, domineering, and passionate; but also has an intensely deep connection.
Logan finding out her illness is powerfully written and one of the greatest parts of the book. Logan goes through so much through this book, and her character arc shows a woman who has come full circle in her character. Elise has also grown as a character. These two fmcs are passionately written, and we are given everything. The storm and the sun, as they are often referred to. I recommend this book.

Oh my Storms and Sunshine! This book?!?! Oh this book. From the very beginning to the bitter end, it played my heartstrings Masterfully. The feels this book makes you feel is just a journey across the whole spectrum of a feels-trip. Not exactly the same situation as Logan, but having a chronic disability myself the emotions and thoughts and ALL THE DARN FEELS are so accurate and depicted so expertly that they are immensely impactful! Add to that the wording and description throughout just paints a vividly painted picture. Every character was crafted so uniquely there was something to latch onto on each one. And their personalities and presence.. chefs kiss. I sobbed, screamed, swooned and smiled throughout this journey and I truly feel this is a book that will leave its mark on my soul and will not be forgotten.
This is more than just a storm in a teacup and you’ll be needing something stronger too!
River Hale, takes us on a new tale of self discovery, finding love when everything is crashing down around you and an emotional rollercoaster. This is a FF following Logan and Ellie and straight away you’re pulled into this story as it starts in the past giving you a full understanding of the characters and the current situation.
The detail is amazing, just the first paragraph you are in that scene and feeling the emotions that pour through the pages. There is an undercurrent of a dark past that as the story continues you can put the pieces together as everything starts to unfold.
I’ve found myself full of hope a lot more lately. It probably has something to do with my ray of sunshine sitting beside me.
Huge thank you to River for the opportunity to read and review!
This was such a wonderful read, truly. The characters, the plot, literally everything. I couldn't stop reading it when I started it. This was sitting outside and seeing the storm blow in. This was watching the lightning. This was feeling the thunder give the little shake to your shelter. This was the calm, the eye, the sunshine after and everything between.
This story follows our characters Logan and Elise. A tragedy occurs and completely dismantles Logan's life and family, and though years have passed, the storm still brews inside of her... and Elise is in the eye of it. Logan is still trying to piece together the details of the night her life changed forever, and through this journey and new ones, she finds the lines blurred between her and the one she has trained herself to hate all this time.
Logan and Elise were phenomenal characters. Honestly, all of the characters were so unique. But Logan and Elise? The way this story unfolded... ugh. Loved it. Logan's growth. Her strength. Her fight. Elise's love and compassion. There are so many details of it that I could just go on and on about. These two took me on an emotional rollercoaster. I give it all the stars and love.
I never write.reviews but this book ended up having a few lessons in it. It started off as a slow read to pass the time . I say that because I usually fly through books , I can finish multiple books in a day. I put it down a coup!e of times before I really got into it. I thought it was a romance book and it was but it also focused on forgiveness and letting yourself accept help from others . The internalized homophobia didn't seem like a huge part of the book until you understand why everything happened the way that it did. I don't want to spoil the book so I'll just say give it a chance and it might surprise you .
I got a little bored, skipping paragraphs.. especially when they where talking about storms and sunshine. It's okay to mention it once but then it got really annoying for me. The sex moments was okay but then they would say something like "bad girl" or dirty girl" and I would have cringe goosebumps. Also I don't know why but I never really liked Logan. The whole book was kinda flat for me. Too much drama, too much seriousness, zero humour, depth kind of forced. It feels like when they are together they only talk about sex and drama. I never found one moment of laughter and deep conversation between them. That was disappointing for me because I really think that real connection starts from that. I think about my personal experiences when I read a book and I consider humour and communication the key to an interesting relationship. I love drama too, don't get me wrong. It feels flat though, when this is the only thing that defines a relationship. I got in big trouble to find this book. I had to contact the author to get it because I had a problem with my Kindle. I thank her very much for the help. She seems to be an amazing person. I'm here to say my honest opinion though. This book was a 2,8 star read for me. I understand and respect the idea and when I read the synopsis I was convinced that I was about to read my favourite book ever. I spotted a lot of things that I would like to be different but I acknowledge that maybe I just have a different taste in books. The writing style is really catchy though. I finished it in one afternoon. So it was well written but a little too dramatic for me.
Great story that I can tell the author has put her heart and soul into. I highly recommend this story of Logan and Elise. Logan's family implodes after a son is pushed off a bridge and another brother go to jail for murder. Elise was there but every memory of the event is lost in a drunken haze. The enemy to lover trope is one of my favorites and this one is excellent. Logan has a hard life and just maybe Elise is the one to show her sunshine in an otherwise stormy life. This is also an informative look on living with MS. I salute River Hale and her bravery writing this book.
When I tell you, I cried multiple times during this book… For heartbreaking things, for beautiful things, for things I needed to hear. As someone with multiple chronic illnesses and disabilities, I always feel like a I am a burden on my loved ones. But I’m not. And Logan in this book isn’t either. I loved the story between Logan and Elise and how the dynamics changed over time and how everything came full circle for them. And it was also really sexy too!! This is a must read!
Y’all! I was not ready for the emotions that came with this story! It as beautifully dark but sucked me in just the same as all River’s story’s do! I couldn’t put it down until I got to the ending and it was definitely the ending Elise and Logan needed!
What you can expect: ⚡ Darkish Sapphic Romance ⚡ Enemies to Lovers ⚡ Masc Lesbian/Bi Femme ⚡ Bi-Awakening ⚡ Grumpy/Sunshine ⚡ Possessive MC ⚡ Light K!nk/Toys ⚡ Chronic Illness/Disability Rep
This book was definitely a journey, hard fought but it overall beautifully made. Logan had a hard life and I felt her anger so much…at her parents, at her brother, at Declan, at Elise…at life. I saw her way to forgiveness with it all and her falling in love with Elise as the sun after the storm. Wonderful story!
This book had it all and it was done expertly. I loved the spice, the bi rep was so well done, and I really liked how she included Logan's disability in a way that was informative while also showing the impact it had in her life. Both emotionally and physically. I will be keeping an eye out for anything else River Hale has to offer because this was brilliant.
If you're looking for a sapphic enemies to lovers with a decent plot this is a great choice! It has murder, revenge, acceptance of self, and realistic examples of dealing with a disability. There was a lot of spice, but had an equal amount of plot and storyline. Read through it quickly and recommend it!
ohhh mannn…this story was a great revenge story but even THE PLOT?? it was a heartwrenching journey! & that little plot twist was ROUGH!! but i loved these girls & how they learned to let the other love themselves!!
I picked this book up without really knowing what to expect—it was my first time reading anything by River Hale—and wow, I was not ready for how much I loved it. One thing I really appreciate is how much personal experience River put into crafting Logan. This won't be the last River Hale novel I read.
When lightning strikes is the perfect mixture of dark, spicy, warm and sweet. I adore a great sapphic story with just a sprinkle of darkness to keep me on my toes! Especially when I start off by really not liking one of the MCs and then end up adoring them by the end of it! Great read!
"The break of day has brought my sunshine back to me." HAA GAY.
This was a solid read! I am convinced it is set in my tiny mountain town for sure. The MC's were believed and the romance was steammmmyyyy. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
