Mateo Martinez is many things. The starting pitcher of the New York Monarchs, a devoted single father, and most recently, my new boss.
When the opportunity to finally move out of my parent’s cramped apartment and into his swanky home to nanny for his daughter arose, I simply couldn’t pass it up.
Until I made the silly suggestion for him to keep me on a three strikes system, and I’m racking them up at lightning speed.
I should know better than to fantasize about silly things like love, but curiosity is getting the best of me, and our stolen touches don’t feel so innocent anymore.
When the three strikes are up, I wonder… will I step up to the plate, or conform to living life on the sidelines?
Isabella Morales is toying with my self control. She’s my daughter’s nanny, a fact I often have to remind myself of when I’m around her.
Because the second she stepped into my world, it’s been mayhem in my heart.
I’ve never had any interest in dating ever since my little girl came into my world. Never, not once. That is until Isabella came along and set my world on fire.
Because try as I might, I can’t ignore her lingering stares, or the way she taunts me when she defies me at every turn.
Little does she know that we’re playing the same game, by different rules. Because once I call three strikes, I’m claiming her as mine.

A cute single dad x nanny sports romance! Nothing special, the writing and dialogue was very cringe at parts but Mateo had me absolutely SAT!!! This man carried with that filthy mouth of his god I loved him! The ending was very boring I fear, also I felt like I was missing parts of their relationship, like they met in the past but we never got those scenes so it felt like they jumped right into liking eachother? Idk if that makes sense.
I will say, the side characters have me so intrigued and I will be reading the next book in the series when it comes out!
Tropes: - BIPOC representation - single dad x nanny - grumpy/sunshine - he falls first
dnf for now as much as i hate to say so.. i'm just not interested :(
˚ · • . ° .˚ · • . ° .˚ · • . ° .˚ · • . ° .
pre - read . after reading all of these trashy dark romances, my brain desperately needs something fun and light. and i love me a good baseball romance 🤞🏻💜 !
This was cute, funny, and a light read. I would've rounded up this to 4 stars because it had no BS separation, but then the ending was so lame, with them just being in a relationship. 🤦♀️
Obviously, it's a personal preference, but I don't read romance for HFN endings. I want something more, like years later involved, preferably married, can be with or without kids. Some proof that the MCs are going to last and that they're endgame. 🤷♀️
Anyway, this is my first book by this author, so I don't have any clue if the MCs here were already part of or introduced in her other series or books. But in the prologue, it was implied that Mateo (33) and Isabella (25) have already known each other because their parents have been friends for almost a decade now. I don't think they grew up together, though, or had been around each other. Also, it was said that Isa had already played the nanny gig months ago when Mateo and his daughter, Anna (5), vacationed to the Dominican Republic.
Present time and months later (unsure how long) after that vacation. Mateo's mom has been urging him to hire a new nanny for his kid. But he's not relenting because the two recommendations sent by the agency were utter failures with their jobs. So his mom suggested that since Isa is currently a freelancer and handles her own time, she can be Anna's nanny again. But Mateo has a problem with that idea cuz apparently he's attracted to her, and hiring a woman he can't stop thinking about is a freaking bad idea. However, his kid has taken a liking to Isa, and in the end he eventually hired her. 🤭
This was very much insta-something—attraction and lust for sure. It was also fast-paced, like within two weeks of forced proximity they were already developing feelings for one another. 🫣 But then I think maybe that has been already brewing for months, and the forced proximity just made them embrace the truth. 🤷♀️
The tension and chemistry were there, and although the MCs were both interested with one another, this was very much a slowburn, and nothing happened between them, not until the 70% mark. It was like the majority of the book was them having a long foreplay with the lingering question of should they give in or not to their attraction. And, tbh, I had fun with it because the MCs were adorable. 🤭
Isa was a likable, funny, and sunshine personification. Her quirks, witty remarks, and a bit of awkwardness made me laugh on most occasions. And I love it when she can't stop rambling when she's flustered or how she can be sassy the next minute. I love her relationship with Anna and how they bonded over the story. I also admired her for moving on with what happened to her five years ago and for seeing that Mateo isn't like her ex. 💖
As for Mateo, I love his dedication and relationship with his daughter. He always spends time with her and never makes her feel alone or less just because she only has one parent. I love his love language (gift giving) and the way he takes care of the people whom he values the most in the world. 🥹
It was funny seeing him being in denial with his feelings, and although his mouth says a lot of things, his actions betrays him and always do the contrary. He tried to pull away (for valid reasons), but thank God, it didn't last long. 😂
And when they finally gave in, let's just say it was haaawt. 🥵🤭 I guess the foreplay was worth the wait. I love seeing them as an official couple and the way they encourage one another. They were just adorable together, and I love that they have supportive friends, families, and teammates.
This was very much smooth sailing, and the only conflict happened when Mateo's team played against Isa's ex's team. I wish he didn't lose it on the game, but again, there's nothing that can stop a man in love from protecting his woman. So I'll try to be more understanding of his reaction; I know he did it out of love and with no malice.
Anyway, like I said, this was okay. I enjoyed it for the most part, but the ending ruined it for me. It was so unsatisfying, and I wish the readers were given more glimpses of the MCs lives years ahead. But overall impression it was an easy light read and definitely way better than my previous read that made my head ached.
Book info: - Single dad x nanny - Grumpy x Sunshine - Age gap (8) - Forced proximity - Online bullying - Revenge porn (against the h) - Loss of loved one (past) - Latin representation - Gal friendships - Sports romance (Baseball) - Insta-something - Slowburn - No cheating, OM/OW, separation - No V (no info on the MCs last) - HFN (in a relationship) 🥲
Notes: — The baby mama wasn't in the picture; she signed away her rights to Anna the day she was born. Mateo was casually dating her when she got pregnant. He offered to date her officially and see if they could become family. But the OW wasn't interested in being a mom. — Five years ago, Isa's ex proposed to her in front of a crowd, only for him to get photographed with two other women three days after his grand proposal. And when she dumped him, he circulated her sexy photos (not nude) on the internet, and that made people say a lot of nasty things to her. — OM. Not really; her ex did appear as they played against Mateo's team. He made snide remarks about Isa that made Mateo see red. Fortunately, he was put into place (I mean, broken nose would definitely do that) — Mateo was called America's sweetheart because of the way he treats their fans and all the people he works with.

Millie Perez at its FINEST!!! Fans of Liz Tomforde will DEVOURED this. Very heartwarming, sexy and an overall special story about two people who found each other when they needed it the most.
To be loved is to be seen🥹 Mateo and Isa were very cute tg and I really did enjoy reading their story. This was a drama free and easy read for me and has fortunately made me somewhat believe in single dad romances again after being burned last year lmao🫣 My only complaint is that we didn't get a solid ending for Mateo and Isa because I would have liked to see an extended epilogue with marriage/babies (sue me I love seeing that in romance books😭) Other than that, this book was great!
safety squad: - no OW drama - slight OM drama (h's cheating ex fiancé who leaked her sexy pics causes drama towards the end but the H handles him i.e. punches him, H gets jealous when the h is set up on a blind date and puts a stop to it immediately😏) - no cheating/sharing - single dad (baby mama is not in the picture since she never wanted to be a mother and signed away her rights when the H's daughter was born. H wanted to make it work for the daughter's sake but respected the birth mother's decision) - he falls first - sort of forbidden romance (h is his daughter's nanny) - POC rep (puerto rican + dominican) - HFN (epilogues are basically a sneak peek for the next couple)
At its heart, "Strikeout" is a story about unexpected connections. Isa, our plucky heroine, finds herself thrust into the glamorous yet chaotic world of professional baseball when she takes on a nanny position for a star player's child. Mateo, the brooding athlete and reluctant father, initially seems like the stereotypical arrogant sports star. However, Perez skillfully peels back the layers of both characters, revealing depth and vulnerability that had me invested in their journey.
What sets this book apart is Perez's witty dialogue and sharp humor. The banter between Isa and Mateo crackles with energy, and I found myself chuckling at their exchanges more often than not. Perez isn't afraid to lean into comedic moments, which provides a nice balance to the more emotional beats of the story.
The pacing is swift, with short chapters that make it easy to say, "Just one more" well into the night. While the attraction between Isa and Mateo is evident from the start, Perez takes her time developing their emotional connection, making their eventual coming together all the more satisfying.
Isa's relationship with Mateo's child is another highlight, avoiding the pitfalls of making the kid either too precocious or merely a plot device. Instead, these interactions feel genuine and add another layer to the developing family dynamic.
If I had one critique, it would be that occasionally Isa's quirkiness feels a tad overdone. However, this is a minor quibble in an otherwise enjoyable read.
"Strikeout" may follow a familiar path, but Perez's fresh voice and engaging characters make it stand out in the crowded field of romance novels. It's a promising debut that has me looking forward to what she'll write next.
I really loved this book , I just hated that it was an extreme slow burn , the smut didn’t come until about 70-75% into the book and the fact that we kept emphasizing how they previously knew each other because the moms are besties but we never really dive into their past it’s just straight jump into “I want her but can’t have her.”
I felt a little underwhelmed by the ending , but all in all it was a cute read .
Overall Rating: 4 💫 what can I say? okay..... that was actually was fun, it was hard for me to get into at first and some parts was kind of weird, but with time they actually had that built-up that I was hoping they have before they end up together, and the fact that they get together after almost 75% was actually so good 🤌 I am not Dominican or Puerto Rican by all means, but the representation was still so good and just makes want to learn Spanish right now, because it was so fun to read about🥹 the mental health representation was also kind of good, I liked the way that she represents herself and knows her worth, although the information damping at first makes me kind of uninterested, like I already know all about her from like the 11% in? 😶🌫️ this was just a cute fun little time with a single dad who is protective as fuck, I mean what do you need more?🥹🙏🏻
Some Quotes & Scenes I loved
And that’s what Isabella reminds me of. Home. Which makes her the most dangerous woman in my life
Valid points. But not in my favor, so I ignore and pivot
I respond with a look that clearly shows I know she got caught bullshitting me. Her cheeks turn a pretty shade of pink. I don’t think twice and turn up the brightness on my phone to get a better look
I swear, if you want to see the sweetest smile known to man, just mention his daughter to this guy. Doesn’t matter where or when. If Anna is near or mentioned, you are one of the lucky ones to get to experience the gentlest expressions that Mateo Martinez reserves for his daughter the single dad's vibe is hitting hard
God bless women Amen 🙏🏻
I’m an athlete who has trained and conditioned my body to do things that most people could never fathom. Yet I cease to hold any control over my legs when I’m in the same room as her. They inevitably lead me straight to her
"Ding, ding, ding. Yes, my therapist thinks I’m very funny too, thank you very much. And maybe I just need to get laid so I stop thinking about dicks, but regardless of where I was going with that, I would like to take my baggage back now and put it in a nicely contained compartment, away from the world to see, and specifically, your sad eyes,” she pleads. “What do you mean you need to get laid? Are you, uh, seeing someone?” Try as I might, I didn’t hear a word of what she said after she mentioned getting laid
Me: K. Mateo: Excuse me? Me: Oh I’m sorry. Maybe you are older than I realized, although your behavior tonight says otherwise. But “k” means OKAY
Me: You’re insufferable today. Now I know never to feed the gremlin pizza and wine. Or maybe it was the gelato that made you this way. Noted! Mateo: Friday night pizza, wine, and gelato. It’ll be our thing. Me: Our thingggg, is me currently trying not to end up in Rikers for fantasizing about ways to put my hands around your neck. Mateo: … Mateo: Jeez, Isa. Take a man out to dinner and movie first. But go on…
“Are you done?” “Excuse you?” she asks, her chest rising with each labored breath. “I said are you done? Because if you are, then this is the point where I tell you I’m sorry and beg for your forgiveness.” Her lips purse slightly as she gives me a skeptical once-over. “You don’t look very sorry to me.” I smile. “Because I’m not. Not even in the slightest. And if I could, I’d do it again, Isabella.”
“You still there, Isa?” Mateo asks tenderly. “Please don’t cry, tesoro.” I chuckle lightly, quickly wiping a rogue tear before it messes up my makeup. “Tesoro? You picking up some new words without me now?” “Yeah. Guess you can say I’ve been practicing. Got a teacher to impress.” “Oh yeah?” I taunt as I step farther away from the kitchen. “Then surely you can tell me what it means.” He pauses momentarily, and I think it’s because he’s trying to remember. That is, until he speaks, and his words come through like a caress. “Tesoro, it’s what you are to me.”
“Isa, someway, somehow, you will come to learn that there isn’t a place on earth where you wouldn’t be able to reach me. Sky and sea included. Talk to you soon, tesoro.”
“No. I want to drop to my damn knees. I want to keep you in that special place that you’ve so delicately carved into my heart. I want to be so pathetic around you and hope that you somehow mistake it for romanticism. Because no, Isabella. I don’t want to date. I want you, wholly. Forever mine. Forever ours.”
“So, is this the part where you ask me to be your girlfriend or something?” “No, this is the part where I beg.”
“Nope, that’s all, kiddo. Just means she has a place in my heart, like you and Abuela do.” Anna looks down at her hands as she worries her lip. “Can I ask a question?” she asks warily. “Of course, mija.” She looks up at Isabella with glassy eyes. “Does that mean I get to have a place in your heart, too?”
"I love you, Isabella. Eres mi luna y mi sol. Mi principio y mi final. I once thought I was a wealthy man. Little did I know that one of life’s biggest treasures—you—was yet to come.”
"I feel like I’m constantly waiting on the sidelines to swoop her up and save her. Yet at every turn, she ends up saving herself, and it makes me love her a little more each day"
“Careful, Martinez. You don’t want to go around making a girl think you’re proposing to her or something.” He hums. “I wouldn’t dare. Although, tell me. If this were your favorite romance book, how would I propose to a woman like you?”
and the little glimpse of the next two couples is killing me 😭😭
3.5 ⭐️ Nice palette cleansing book Would have liked to of had a little bit better of an epilogue for the couple the book was written about instead of the epilogue leading into the next book in the series.
★★★★★. This book reminded me why I love single dad romances. THANK YOU MILLIE FOR ACTUALLY WRITING A YEARNING MAN. Also, I absolutely love the POC (fmc is Dominican and the mmc is Puerto Rican) representation in this book and how it was done so well!! This man’s love language was literally gift giving to the point of getting his girl a Louis Vuitton bag for her drawing supplies. HE WORSHIPPED THIS WOMAN.
Isabella, my GIRL. I LOVED this fmc so much. She was so funny and unapologetically herself. Her confidence and everything was amazing. I loved how she loved her family and friends. How she did everything to make sure Matteo’s daughter would smile. Her banter back to Matteo was perfect. Her teaching Matteo his Spanish again and getting him to be more confident. HER FINDING HERSELF IN HERSELF AND NOT SOME MAN WAS EVERYTHING!!!!!! Her past broke my heart and I loved how the author didn’t write her healing by being with someone else but instead how that was just a catalyst for her to help herself!
Matteo, UGH A REAL MAN! He loved one thing more than his daughter and that is Isa. His Tesoro!!!!!! He was a man on the mission once he stopped fighting for his feelings (after chapter 2 no joke). He yearned for this woman. He made sure he was perfect for her. He saw what she wanted in love and gave it all. He declared his love for her in front of a whole stadium of fans. His backstory and how he wanted to give his daughter a family with the birth mom but knew it wasn’t right was interesting. I liked how the author didn’t play it like he was heartbroken and instead had all the legal work done. He’s the best man ever. His daughter is his number one priority and him saying how now Isabella is apart of that was perfect.
I really want Denise and Matteo’s best friends story. I’m so so interested in Daisy and the Coach. I love already Nick and Luisa.
such a fun & bingeable read! For my sports romance besties who love a single dad who’s down bad for the nanny!! Forever love the Hispanic representation in Millie’s books! 💜
Love the groundwork Millie did for future potential books, and that she brought in Amelia & Nikki from her previous books into this series 🥹
P.S. I’m not a lover of age gap, but this one was done perfectly! Not in an icky way at all. She’s 25 & he’s 33!
this is my first book by Millie Perez and it was good, a hot single dad/baseball player with an adorable little girl Anna and her nanny Isabella.
I'm not sure if these MCs were in a book before as it was said that Isabella had been Anna's nanny before when they went on holiday or not but it was a light hearted read.
ok it started pretty well, i was hooked and enjoying the hell out of it but idk some little things bugged me throughout the book just personally weren't my favourite still good!! i loved isabella's bond with anna, also obviously the development and how close she gets with mateo too, how mateo tries so hard to forget her but impossible and even worse, she's living with him and he seems how much she cares and loves for his daughter so, the feelings he starts to have are so impossible to forget! it was such a cute book, the puerto rican and dominican representation was on point, loved it a lot too and ugh spanish definitely is one of my fave languages!! also the guys in the team were so fun too and luisa she's interesting and can't wait for her book!! tho the friendship between the women happened fast and a little bit out of nowhere kinda, i felt so happy fro isa that she finally found true friends and people who truly deeply care for her and will be there for her no matter what and obviously finding the man of her dreams who i know will give her the world ehehe that man was down bad and as he should gotta love the single dad nanny trope with baseball sports romance 🤭
This book really had it all. Dogshit dialogue, “jiggly tits”, zero understanding of the rules of baseball, comparing the mmc’s meat to a bat, sex scenes that made me wanna peel my skin off, a serial killer plot line that went nowhere, and—most unrealistically—the Padres going to the World Series.
i really enjoyed this book! i have never read anything from this author before, so I didn’t know really what to expect, but wow, it really did exceed my expectations! this book was such an amazing read, and it had all my favourite tropes in it, single dad and nanny, sports romances, and he falls first, it’s such a perfect bingeable sports romances! i mean he quite literally sees her in his jersey and says “my last name looks good on you” like what more could you need?!? i only just really enjoyed the story and reading about these two characters who have gone through a lot in the past, be able to be so open with one another and find love with each other. i also really enjoyed the dynamic between anna and isabella, it was so cute to read each scene with them! overall a really enjoyable read!
I absolutely loved this book! Mainly because of Mateo! Mateo, Mateo, Mateo. Mateo is HOT. He is a gentleman in the streets and a freak in the sheets! He don't play about his woman. Or the women in his life period. That includes his mother and his sweet little girl that he is raising on his own. He's such a good daddy. I also loved Isa. I loved this whole story. Even the baseball parts and I am notoriously critical of baseball romance because the sport stuff is usually so wrong. But eventhough there were a couple of niggles about the baseball, they weren't bad enough to bother me. And Mateo made up for it in the boyfriend and daddy areas. Happy reading!
this was okay. it was short and progressed like super quickly which i kinda appreciate but it also made me appreciate the longer books with a bit more of a slow burn because now i realise it does actually make a difference. this one was nowhere nearly as satisfying…
also while it’s cool that her job is creating book covers it just feels weird reading about it because i know it’s like “relevant” in the book world and i think it’s really cool but it doesn’t necessarily mean i wanna read about it 😭 it’s kinda like the whole talking about tiktok in books or using tiktok slang. it’s weird.
a very generous 3 stars lmao. i hate to say it but i didn’t love this. i wasn’t invested in the characters or the romance. the dialogue was so cringey, the romance was insta lust with little to no emotional attachment, and i had to push through to finish.
my favorite thing about the book was mateo’s relationship to his culture. since he can’t speak spanish he feels disconnected to a piece of himself and feels shame. i really related to that part of the book and i appreciated being able to see myself in this. i loved how he worked on himself to learn spanish and become more connected to his roots. isabella was so thoughtful to help him practice his spanish and i thought that was so sweet!
besides that this book was a snoozefest. the characters met before the book started and when they’re reintroduced they’re already lusting after each other. i felt like their relationship was only based on physically attraction. the author tried to give them some emotional connection but it lacked depth. i didn’t care if they were together or apart and i didn’t care about them as people.
we’re told isabella’s passion is to create book covers. we see her working on this passion like 2 times. she had like no personality or hobbies. i wish we could’ve seen more of both.
isabella and mateo’s dialogue was so cringey at times i was upset reading it 😂 the writing felt so choppy and immature. i felt like mateo’s daughter was just there bc he was a single dad. she didn’t do anything and i feel like she didn’t add anything to the plot.
i was so underwhelmed and would’ve dnf’ed if i could. i loved the representation so so much i just wish i would’ve liked this more!
i think if you like nanny x single dad and want something that feels low stakes you could like this!
