Rate this book
Adeus, meu amor. Tu foste o tal.

Andrea e Craig tinham a vida quase perfeita.

O caso, altamente mediatizado, alimenta a imprensa e as redes sociais.

BAM! Bam! Bam! Hit the bulls eye on every new reveal. What a great, exciting read. And even when the main character made some horrible choices that normally would be eye-rolling, this girl had my sympathy, so I understood why. She was naive and a fighter all packed into one complex character. Brilliant!

*sigh* how does this have so many good reviews? Maybe I didn’t read the same book. This book has SO MANY plot holes, was so fantastical, it was literally unbelievable and implausible. The female lead, Andi, was so weak and wimpy that I can hardly believe another woman wrote this character. The best way to describe my reading experience is like this: you ever put on a soap opera and you’re like, this is so absurd, but Then you just sit and all of a sudden you’ve watched 40 minutes of Days of Our Lives? This book is that.

Thriller writing at its best!

The Girl You Killed by bestselling author Leslie Wolfe is another fine example of thriller writing that will have you on the edge of your seat. The author again weaves another suspense filled crime thriller with plenty of twists and turns that easily draws the reader in from the opening chapter. It had every element a good story should have. A solid plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel you are right there in the story, and that’s something I look for in a good book.

The plot is intricately carved, as the synopsis suggests: ‘Andrea Brafford’s life is nearly perfect. A passionate marine biologist, happily married to Craig, the man she loves, recently moved into a home commensurate with their success to enjoy a life many others only dream about, in one of Houston’s most desirable suburbs. But only a few months later, a trial that dramatically polarizes their town names Craig Brafford as a defendant in the murder of his young wife, shattering the serenity of the peaceful community… Andi’s name is on everyone’s lips, her relationships exposed and torn to shreds in a highly publicized case that has everyone’s eyes glued to the internet. Andrea’s life remains a mystery that investigators and public opinion equally fail to solve. Was she the happy, devoted wife she'd made everyone believe she was?... Only she can answer that question.’

There’s no doubt that The Girl You Killed is an exceptionally well written book. The contrast between tone and content is a characteristic talent of only a few authors. Wolfe pays as much attention to her sentences as she does to her plots, shifting or consolidating meaning with the use of a single word. Her writing is impeccably honed, full of juxtapositions and qualifications that help to create a suspenseful atmosphere throughout. Very highly recommended and a well deserved five stars from me.

If you’re a fan of crime thrillers, mystery and suspense, I would highly recommend anything by this author.

I'll take Things That Never Happened for $800. There are plot holes, and then there are Plot Holes - actions and reactions so absurdly impossible, the author must think we're stupid (spoilers below):

- You cannot reverse the effects of severe rodenticide poisoning in a human at home with veterinary medicine.

- Bleeding after a miscarriage is heavy and lasts a couple weeks; it does not stop after a few hours.

- A large, well-known, public university would not take the word of a rando pretending to be the FBI at face value. Plus, the FBI doesn't call! They just show up. All these places where Andi applied were willing to believe a strange, out-of-nowhere caller that Andi was some kind of criminal, like no, the authorities aren't going to interfere with the hiring process; they'll just raid your house and arrest you.

- Craig contacts all these places and, even though Andi has his passcode, doesn't erase the numbers from his call history.

- The Department of Labor would not call until they've sent letters/emails, allowing the employer to state their case in writing first. It's all documented. You don't just get a random phone call out of the blue.

- Why would Andi's father keep evidence of murder to himself? That last chapter was there for "twist" value, but it made no sense that the pictures and notes wouldn't have already been turned over to the police. Wouldn't he have wanted his daughter's would-be-killer to get a life prison sentence vs. a mere 15 years?

There is more, but I have to stop somewhere.

To add to the above:

The narrative style was an odd mix of limited and omniscient POV, kind of like a fly jumping in and out of everyone's heads and pontificating about it.

Andi being so weak, pathetic, and obsessed with a man didn't fit the character profile the author had created. She had a passion for marine biology and was set to receive her doctorate in a matter of months. She had a strong support system, with a loving father and close friends, and had known Craig for only a year or so. She wasn't alienated socially and didn't need his financial support.

Andi wasn't a battered woman with no options, yet she continued to deny reality and make excuses for Craig
even after finding out A. he'd been sabotaging her job efforts and B. poisoning her so she'd miscarry.

And who the hell willingly eats a dinner knowing it's poisoned ffs?

Wow. One of the most naive and vacuous female protagonists ever

It took me several tries to get into this book, because . . . reasons. For one, I prefer stronger female characters with a modicum of common sense. Still, I liked this clever story with several good twists, but as the story unfolds, one possible ending becomes predictable. The characters are mostly well-developed, but I had problems with the main (and the secondary) characters’ behaviors and reactions.

I couldn’t believe the female protagonist’s naïveté and . . . let’s face it, stupidity. She’s been married six months, but has stopped taking birth control “for a while.” Without discussing it with her husband. She’s pregnant. She’s overjoyed, but doesn’t tell hubby. She’s applied for but doesn’t have a job yet. She has no thoughts about how she’ll combine a new—and her first ever—job with her first ever pregnancy. She’ll just show up for work with fatigue, heartburn, cramps, nausea, vomiting, etc.

Later, she faces increasing evidence of her narcissistic husband’s deceit and treachery. Still, she does as he wishes and cries in secret. Girl, stop “brimming with tears!”

The girl you killed is a page turner that had me guessing right till the end. It’s cleverly written with police interviews and a breakdown of events.

Andrea has a bright future ahead of her. She’s smart, has high aspirations and a husband that wants the big house. As this story unravels it’s obvious somethings off but the mystery still has me guessing. I’ve read a few of Leslies books and this one was a little different because it has little snippets of the police interviews.

4 stars out of 5. A mystery to be passionate/screaming at.

Andrea is married to a man she adores, lives in a very nice home, dreams of being a marine biologist, and just recently became pregnant.

It's only a few months later that there is a trial which seems to be almost impossible for the people who knew them ... her husband, Craig, is on trial for murder .... the murder of his beautiful wife.

So what went wrong in their marriage? Was she ever the happy wife she portrayed? Was he ever the perfect man who would do anything for his wife?

The book starts with the newlyweds, examining the events leading up to murder.... with excerpts here and there from the trial. Family, friends, acquaintances are all questioned. Their relationship is minutely examined ... what possibly could have lead to this?

This is well-written with twists and turns around every corner. The characters are solidly developed. The stunning conclusion makes this one un-put-downable. It's hard to say a lot because of possible spoilers ... so all I will say is that this is an excellent read ... and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a good solid psychological thriller.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Grandes SPOILERS!!!

Então e ela vai coser a própria cabeça???

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Andrea Bradford is blissfully happy in her marriage. Her husband adores her, they have a beautiful home in a fantastic neighborhood and she just found out she is pregnant. The only thing she desires is a job, hopefully at her alma mater using her skills as a marine biologist.

Tragically, Andi’s life is cut short when she is murdered. Her husband Craig is the police’s prime suspect. The community quickly becomes invested in Andi’s life and death. Will the truth be revealed?

I have to start this review by saying I have to be careful because I don’t want to give anything away because WOW! This was a heck of a story.

The characters are solidly developed over the course of this story. It is impossible not to like Andi and become invested in her life. Craig on the other hand is the exact opposite. He starts out just fine but quickly turns into quite a scoundrel.

The author takes her time and knows how to build the tension slowly pulling the reader deeper and deeper into the intricate web of this psychological thriller. She manipulated the story and the characters in such an excellent way. Her detailed writing style lends well to a story like this. Craig was clearly driven. Andi seemed to be under his spell until it was too late. I liked that some chapters ended with some court testimony teasing us of what was to come. For me, that really ramped up the speed of my reading and one more chapter – itis. The book kept me up reading into the early morning hours because I just couldn’t put it down.

Ms. Wolfe has written a gripping, compelling, powerful story with surprising twists and turns. She took me on a wild wide and I enjoyed each and every page.

This is the first book I have read by this author but it won’t be the last. She appears to be a prolific writer so I have plenty of books to choose from.

An exciting thriller with solid character development I have to give The Girl You Killed my highest rating. Paradise.

Did I read the same book as everyone else?

Most reviews mention “twists and turns” which I kept waiting for. There is absolutely no twist. The bad guy on page one is the bad guy in the middle, and the same bad guy on the last page.

The protagonist was awful—weak and annoying. The whole book was unrealistic. The same whiny female lead that allows her husband to abuse her is the same character that sews her own forehead up with stitches at home in the bathroom? She’s a doctoral science student but doesn’t go to the hospital when she’s been poisoned, but instead treats herself at home with meds stolen from a veterinarian?! Come on!

What a complete waste of time. The premises were unrealistic, the main character was made out to be a complete dumb blonde, and the court scenes were a joke. Attorneys asking questions of witnesses that they, themselves, didn't know the answers to. The prosecuting attorney withdrawing charges in open court and then asking the judge to try the case based on reduce charges in open court....really? Just a complete waste of time. I'm embarrassed that I even bothered to finish reading the book. Don't waste your time.

This book felt sloppy. Juvenile writing, unbelievable plot points, awful pacing, repetitive conversations, and flat characters. The snippets of the court case at the end of the majority of the chapters was jarring. I also had a hard time establishing what was going on when new chapters would begin as the story would drastically jump somewhere/to other characters that didn’t feel natural.

Bookclub pick.
Will update my review after club meeting.
This book felt unrealistic and interesting. I didn't believe the ending could be worse than the lead up, but it was. A man on trial for killing his wife, oh wait just kidding shes a witness. Then she stated her husband killed her... ummmm no miss you are alive. Attempted, yes absolutely. Of course the judge allows a surprise witness, the murdered individual to take thw atand last minute.

A bunch of other things too, but no. This book was so bad. Just no.

THE GIRL YOU KILLED [2021] By Leslie Wolfe
My Review Five Stars*****

First the genre designation(s) for this standalone novel in the book description were IMO inaccurate (it’s a Psychological Thriller). Interestingly, you know those annoying come-on phrases that follow a novel’s title? (Like in this case “An addictive, heart-stopping psychological thriller”). The funny thing is, more often than not these exclamatory accolades following book titles are (to be kind) “misleading”. The worst book I’ve read to date in 2021 had such high praise tacked on to the title of the novel. Which brings me to my point. Leslie Wolfe should not need these flowery embellishments to entice readers to purchase her works, and in my mind they diminish the presentation the promotional announcements that are invariably splashed all over the page. She is (again, IMO) one of the most underrated truly talented authors writing crime fiction today.

This recent offering which has been designated as in the “Leslie Wolfe Collection” is only the second standalone novel I have read of hers. The other one was a departure from her usual fare called STORIES UNTOLD. It absolutely knocked my socks off and made me keep a box of tissues at the bedside. This was only one example of demonstrating this author’s expertise and flexibility in dominating more than one genre of fiction. I have read her entire Tess Winnett series (well, except for the latest Novella THE GIRL THEY TOOK released earlier this year). The Winnett serial killer thrillers are outstanding to include the full-length novels and the series of novellas which have been released. I have also read her Baxter & Holt Series which was different in overall tone and focused more on action than the Tess Winnett books/novellas. The former is dark, gutsy, visceral, and as much realism from FBI Profiling and serial killers to satisfy even veteran fans. Baxter & Holt were entertaining to the extreme and I laughed out loud at times and found all three of them to be exceptionally well written and executed.

You might have figured out by now that I am a BIG fan of Wolfe’s. She’s just plain (doggone) good!!! She didn’t let off the gas pedal with THE GIRL YOU KILLED and it was truly “unputdownable”, a term I see maligned about as much as “awesome” or “surreal”. In this case however it was most assuredly apropos. The writing style was perfect for this nerve-wracking narrative which tells the story of a young woman who finds herself in the deadly spider’s web of a malignant narcissist. The protagonist is particularly sympathetic, and there is strong character development from the main players down to the supporting cast. The pace is perfect and the suspense palpable. Wolfe brings her “A” game once again, but then she has never failed to meet my expectations.

TOP SHELF PSYCHOLOGICAL SUSPENSE THRILLER FROM THE AMAZING LESLIE WOLFE!!!

Things didn’t add up

I think I have reached a saturation point with authors making the women in their stories complete and helpless victims. You have this bright, intelligent, independent woman in Andi who somehow falls under this spell of utter devotion and lust for this man which leaves her powerless and under his control.
All the evidence leads to him, yet she stays because she loves him so much. Maybe this reader (thankfully) hasn’t found love like that that leaves her with no mind of her own and a complete fool. I’m just tired of this dialogue and the woman made out to be complete victims with no mind of their own.
Without any spoilers being said, so much inconsistency with how things went down, that it made parts of the story so unbelievable. Then the author throws in a possibility of Craig being gay a couple of times in the book, but that never went anywhere nor did it add anything to the storyline. Along with the Jude connection from his childhood and now in the present. Completely unnecessary.
The book kept me reading as I was trying to uncover what the hell was going on so yes it was a psychological thriller as it is described, but there wasn’t much plausibility in how it went down at all. Ended up being disappointing.

DNF. When I start skimming a book at only 2 chapters in, I know I should just stop. I made it to 26% and couldn't take the stupidness anymore. it gets a lot of 4/5 stars, so maybe I should have stuck with it.. but there are other books out there waiting for me!
