During the middle of a storm, a local radio DJ is savagely murdered in his Essex mansion. When the clouds and rain clear the following morning, DS Tomek Bowen and his team discover a crime scene reminiscent of something from the history books.
The evidence suggests this was a random killing. But as Tomek peels back the layers of the victim's life, he realises there's more to the DJ than meets the eye.
Meanwhile, at home, Tomek is forced to battle a difficult teenager who, for some reason, is becoming more and more combative. All because she met Zeus, the man who's going to save the world. But only if she does everything he tells her, regardless of who she hurts along the way.
I’m Jack Probyn, and I write murder mysteries and crime thrillers set in England. I studied Creative Writing at the University of Surrey and have always been fascinated by storytelling, particularly the dark and twisty kind.
I’m the author of the DC Jake Tanner series and the DS Tomek Bowen series, both packed with suspense, mystery, and unexpected twists. When I’m not writing, I enjoy building LEGO, solving sudoku puzzles, and occasionally going snowboarding. I live in England with my partner and our British Shorthair cat, Tommy.
Well written, and compelling to read, but I didn't like the concept of the cult storyline. Chilling. It will be interesting to see how Jack repairs the relationship between father and daughter.
I just love this series and the dynamic between the various characters - both at home and at the station. This particular book concentrates more on Kasia and Tomek. Wow Kasia takes teenage girl angst to such a level (not a spoiler because premise of book but she gets involved with some really interesting people). It was scary how plausible this all sounded, my only niggle is I would have liked to know more about how her friend got involved to start with. As always it ends on a cliff hanger, I would recommend that these books are not read as standalones but as a series as each one builds on the previous. This ending has intrigued me.This is a series where you really have to start from the beginning as the relationships both at home and the office develop. This particular book concentrates on the home life and the impacts of the cult. There is the standard cliff hanger at the end which continues the story of Mikeal. As a parent it is quite scary about how young girls can get dragged into a cult so easily. The way it is written is believable. The other element is how parents can be blindsided on their children and what they are doing. I appreciate that I am guilty of it in small ways but not to this extent. The narration works really well and just brings the Polish immigrant speech to life and make you feel that you there.
DS Tomek Bowen and his thirteen-year-old daughter Kasia have been forging a bond until lately. Now under the spell of Zeus she has been admitted to his group of chosen young women, the Harpies, introduced by her slightly older friend Yasmin with whom she shares the history of that traumatic night when another girl was badly injured. Zeus is a charismatic wannabe musician with a flock of young female admirers. He’s also got a bit of a thing about barcodes and garden gnomes! Kasia’s behaviour has become extremely difficult and demanding and Tomek fears the worst, but even he cannot imagine just what she has got herself into. Meanwhile Tomek and the rest of the very likable Southend Major Investigation Team have a murder to investigate - the brutal slaying of a very popular local radio DJ with apparently no motive and very little by way of evidence. As they dig deeper, unaware other lives are in danger, Tomek battles to understand his daughter. A day of reckoning is coming - who will survive? The premise of this sisterhood sounds quite fantastical until you remember it really did happen once. The only thing I found a bit odd was how quickly Kasia seemed to become part of the group, especially as she has previously come across as quite clued up and mistrustful of strangers, but then again Zeus really is a nasty piece of work who knows how to play on people’s insecurities. A little different from previous books which have been more straightforward police procedurals, the story itself features Kasia’s situation heavily as the team of detectives struggle to gather enough evidence and suspects in their murder investigation and we don’t get to hear as much about the rest of the team’s actions, however the two strands are pulled together very well towards the end and, as usual, there’s a little teaser left for the reader at the end to lead onto the next book.
I was absolutely thrilled that Jack had offered me the next instalment in the series, and my goodness what a cracking book it is.
From the start you can see where the book is going and the trouble ahead. It was such a gripping read, and as it mostly centres around Kasia and Tomek, it was very well written. Having a daughter myself and girl grandchildren, you could feel his frustration and worry for his daughter. I think, had he not been a police officer he would have sorted it once and for all before it all got out of hand.
It’s strange how these odd bods get a grip on people and brainwash them, very subtley at first and before they know it they are trapped in something that they can’t get out of. At one stage I just couldn’t read it quick enough to see what happened and the ending, well, that was such a surprise.
I have to say, having followed this family since the beginning, I felt sorry for Tomek because he’s having to work long hours and provide for his daughter, who obviously doesn’t appreciate what he’s doing and causes mayhem.
Death Saviour by Jack Probyn is the seventh book in the fabulous Tomek Bowen series it is. His latest case is a man found dead in his home. Stabbed multiple times and his with his throat cut. Not only it is promising to be one of high-profile cases yet. But this time it becomes for personal. Tomek Bowen thought that he was doing a good job looking after Kasia but lately his thirteen-year-old daughter has been throwing tantrums and he doesn’t know why. He thinks that it something to do with her school and she is bullied. But he so wrong when he finds out that she is linked to a cult and the leader thinks he is a god called Zeus. Not only that, but there is also a link to him and the current case he is working on. This is another edge of the seat thriller, that I devoured nearly in one sitting. Tomek again in the thick of it trying to do his job and be there for Kasia. You can sense the stress he is under to do the right thing and protect his child who he is unawares of going off the rails. This is a gripping read I enjoyed it immensely. 5 stars from me.
Death's Saviour: A Chilling Essex Murder Mystery Novel (DS Tomek Bowen Crime Thriller Book 7), my eighth read from author Jack Probyn. Well-written with well-developed main characters that continue to grow in depth and a 332-page noir crime thriller that continually develops throughout the length of the book, maybe Probyn's best book in the series to date! After reading Death's Angel: A Chilling Essex Murder Mystery Novel (DS Tomek Bowen Crime Thriller Book 6) I decided to go back and read the books in the series I'd not yet read. I look forward to Probyn’s next book, in fact Death's Breath: A Chilling Essex Murder Mystery Novel (DS Tomek Bowen Crime Thriller Book 8) is already on my TBR list. “I received a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Wow! Tomek really has his work cut out for him in this latest addition to this spine tingling thriller series! Grabbing you from the get go, Tomek not only has a murder to solve but also has to navigate the dangerous waters of bringing up a teenage girl whose becoming more prone to outbursts and more aggressive. Twists and turns, have you totally hooked and gripping the edge of your seat as the author reels us in with a intriguing and terrifying storyline and we see our favourite characters bust a gut trying to solve this case and Tomek take on a cult who is trying to take his daughter away. Chilling, thrilling and absolutely gripping, this latest addition had me hooked from start to finish.
I have read all of Jack's books, including this series with DS Tomek Bowen. I find myself saying, yet again, this is the best one yet. This is mind-blowing, gripping, on the edge of your seat, and at times, a frightening storyline and plot. There are strong characters, revelations, and many a twist, leading to that final one, I just didn't see coming. It's a brilliant, intruging read, which kept me guessing all the way through. One of those books once started, and you don't want to put down. I have no hesitation in recommending this book. My thanks to the author for the advanced copy. This is my honest and unbiased review.
Death's Saviour.....wow this is a fabulous book!! I love the whole series but this storyline was terrifying to say the least! Poor Tomek really needs a break. All the regular characters are great, a wide range of personalties and quirks. I was definitely on the edge of my seat more than once and barely stopped reading, absolutely a one sitting read. The end was crushing, I'm so hurt and angry for Tomek and can hardly wait for the next book to make sure he is going to be ok!!! Keep them coming Jack!!!
A local radio presenter is found dead in his own home. Nothing appears to have been taken and there’s no sign of a break in. With his murder being overkill it’s up to Tomek and team to identify the perpetrators! The area is also suffering strange break ins with nothing being taken just items moved. Kasias behaviour has suddenly become cause for concern. Can Tomek get to the bottom of why she’s changed as well as solving the crimes.
This book has taken the series to another level and my heart was in my mouth most of the way through it. A must read.
The seventh book in the DS Tomek Bowen series and it certainly hits hard and keeps you interested. It makes for uncomfortable reading when you realise there is a cult involved, which involves vulnerable girls lead by a man who believes he is god. Tomek’s daughter Kasia is caught up with this and will it irreversibly damage their relationship? Lucky to read this series as an ARC and definitely recommend them.
Book 7 and the series continues to get better and better. In this instalment the focus is more on Tomek and his teenage daughter Kasia. Her behaviour is leaving a lot to be desired. Just teenage tantrums or something more sinister? Added to this is the murder of a local DJ and house break-ins with no apparent motives other than to cause upset, which gives Tomek and the team a new set of problems. With the final page giving a taster of what’s to come I’m already looking forward to book 8
The seventh instalment from Jack Probyn and his Tomek Bowen series. What can I say they just keep getting better and better. I love Jack’s style of writing and find myself hooked from the start. I would say this storyline was a little grittier than usual, but in a good way, I think it’s because it involved Tomek’s teenage daughter much closer to home than comfortable and didn’t necessarily show her in a good light.
This 7th book in the series seemed darker to me than earlier ones. The book starts with a brutal murder. Tomek has to cope with trying to solve the crime and deal with his daughter who has become involved with a group led by a somewhat extreme character Zeus. The plot focuses more on Tomek and his daughter’s relationship than the crimes.
The 7th book in DS Tomek Bowen series. The team investigate the brutal murder of a DJ. As they delve deeper into the life of the deceased they discover his life was anything but normal. Meanwhile Tomek fights fire with his daughter on the home front. Are the new friends she’s hanging round with all they seem? Tomek is about to find out…..
Book 7 in DS Tomek Series by Jack Proby. Another dark and gritty murder mystery. This time it involves Kasia, Tomek’s 13 year old daughter. The book is too long in my opinion but it grabs the reader’s attention until the very end. I recommend starting with the first book so you understand the group dynamics among the characters.
Took Bowen returns and this time his daughter gets caught up in a dangerous cult. The story of how this affected the relationship we have seen grow up between the two was extremely well told, it will be interesting to see how they recover from this in future books.
Jack Probyn does it again! Death's Saviour is a gripping thriller, fast paced and enthralling. Brilliantly written; you simply don't want to put the book down. Highly recommended, but suggest to get the full benefit you read the other books in the series first. You won't be disappointed.
This is a great read. It feels quite different to the earlier books in the series as it focuses mainly on Tomek and Kasia. I love the way these characters are developing and the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger to leave on
This is the best Tomek book in the series. It is well researched, as I could believe it really happens and not just fiction. I enjoyed it so much that I have read the last of it today so that I could finish it. An exceedingly good read. Highly recommended.
A brutal murder of a popular DJ gets DS Tomek Bowen on the case. Another brutal murder has him trying to find a connection. His teenage daughter Kasia is giving him problems. Kasia gets conned by Zeus leader of a cult. A page turning thriller.
Riveting storyline. It became believable the more you read. How the author can write such a fascinating story. Well done now onto another chapter in the story. Thank you.
I am totally hooked on this book series. The characters, plots, woven together so well. There's a bit of everything, darkness, humour, just makes this series unputdownable. This last book doesn't disappoint, just like the others in the series.
DS Tomek is involved with solving a supposedly ordinary death. Once he investigates, it becomes apparent that more is going on. Amazing story as always, don’t miss out.
