It started with a curse. It will end with a promise.

The country of Ghoma is on the brink of war. For fifty years, it has been led by the tyrant witch-queen Madam Lema. Witches and demons have been at each other’s throats for over a century, ever since a curse was cast that transformed all men with magic into demons.

Meanwhile, humans like Freyah Kenpaw simply try to stay out of the way. That is, until she publicly offends a handsome but arrogant soldier of the queen's army and is snatched away under the cover of darkness to answer for her crime. But the mysterious and grumpy soldier is not who Freyah thought he was, and soon her animosity towards him turns into something else.

After arriving at Castle Larapuna, Freyah learns that her crime might not be the only reason she was brought there. Under the guise of serving her punishment, Freyah is forced to remain at the castle to help Madam Lema uncover secrets of the rebellion facing the country. Suddenly, after years of isolation in her small mountain town of Last Cove, Freyah is thrust into a dangerous world of magic, secrets, and deception.

Caught in the middle of a century-long battle between good and evil, and the battle taking place in her own heart, Freyah must figure out the truth from the lies.
But who can she trust?

After all, there are two sides to every story.

A debit novel full of interesting magic, characters and a twist at the end that I still don't quite understand. 3.5 stars rounded up.

I really liked Lyra and Oram's storyline. I would have loved to see more of them. And her sister the queen was the perfect villain. Evil, unhinged, and drunk on power.

I'm unsure how I feel about Freyah and Whit as a couple. I liked Whit and all his protective nature but I didn't feel the romantic connection with Freyah. We just got a hint of who Freyah is or is going to become in this book. Hopefully there will be more development and character growth for them in the next book.

Overall this was a pretty chill book. Witches, magic, human servants, cursed warlocks(demons) who are now part shifted animals /magicless creatures, considered less than. There's a rebellion rising up in their world. The people and demons are tired of the Queen and the direction she's taking them in. But.. what now?

Trigger warnings:
Attempted SA(on the fmc)
Torture
Death in childbirth
Kidnapping
Death of a parent

It kept me interested, just wasn’t captivating. Sometimes that’s the downside of having multiple perspectives in one book. I can never fully connect with one character and sometimes that prevents me from fully being pulled into a story.

I liked the romance between Lyra and Oran the best and they were sort of side characters. It’s a shame this book wasn’t about their story only.

Overall, it was an ok read. I felt there wasn’t enough romance to string me along. I had little interest in the “main” romance between Freyah and Whit.

I have conflicting feelings about this book. It’s my very first ARC so I was SO excited about it. I loved Lyra and Oram’s story and would have loved to have more of it and I hope to see more from them in the next book. I also love the “villain” Madam Lema. My favorite characters in the book were all side characters honestly.

However the main character, Freyah, was honestly kind of unbearable. I knew Freyah was going to be the most important character in the series and I kind of predicted a lot of what happened to her in her story. I really wanted to love her I just didn’t. I just could not connect to her in a way that made me like her which made me really sad. I also didn’t love the mmc, Whit, either but he grew on me a little bit towards the end.

Overall I liked this book, but I didn’t LOVE it. The plot twist at the end saved this from being a 2/2.5 star read for me. I think I’ll probably read the rest of the trilogy when they come out because I am curious about where the story will go from here and there are so many characters I hope to see more from in the next books.

YES! You know when you KNOW there’s a twist coming and yet STILL you were somehow unprepared for it?!? THAT is literally what just happened. I love how the story came full circle, yet at the same time…so much of story is still yet to be told!

The witchy fantasy vibe of this book is not like any of the fantasy worlds I’ve read about before. I loved everything about it. Not only the world building and magic system, but I also loved the characters too. I can’t wait to see how these characters grow in the next two books! With all the multiple POV’s there is still a lot to learn about each of them…but what I do know is that I want to know MORE! I’m so thankful for having the opportunity to read and ARC copy of Meg Alivien’s first published (soon) book! I’m also glad that halfway through I decided to pre-order a physical copy…this is one for the shelves! 🖤

Amazing high fantasy!! I love the witchy vibes, and all of the characters are so well-done and complex. The villain especially is super well done! The magic system is interesting and very original, and there’s also plenty of romance!!

I highly recommend this if you’re looking for a new fantasy romance with a dash of mystery. The twists were PERFECTLY executed and I’m still reeling. Astonishing fantasy debut! I can’t wait to see what happens next!

LISTEN GIRLIES!!!! if you want a witchy fantasy book this is for you! even though i couldn’t get into Throne of Glass, the one thing i really enjoyed about it was Manon and the witches so having a fantasy book full of witchiness like this one scratched that itch sooooo well. the romance was fun, the spice was great (not crazy but it’s more fantasy than romance so💁🏻‍♀️) and the villain was CRAZYYYYYYY!!! i love an unhinged villain! oh also — morally grey men… ya😏

I was gifted an advanced reading copy of this
novel in exchange for my honest review.
This was my first ever ARC! What a bar M.A has
set for me. Filled with amazing world building,
and a kick ass fmc, this book gripped me from the
first chapter. M.A has an amazing way with words
and an ability to describe things so well, that
I had everything unfolding clearly in my head
through the entire novel. I will say that the middle
dragged a bit for me, I wanted the action to come!
I also struggled with the emotional connection
between the fmc and mmc. All though Whit is a gentleman and a dream, I just was not always convinced of thier relationship. The cliffhanger ending left me SHOOK but looking back, it all makes sense. I cant wait for the next book! OMAM releases on Oct 10th 2023 at major retailers and Kindle Unlimited. Go Read it!

How do I even describe this book and do it justice?

It's the perfect fall read. Witches rule Ghoma, and there queen Madam Lema was the perfect villain. In a world divided by the witch coven, demons and humans. Ghoma is on the brink of war.

I liked the world building, it was pretty straightforward, I didn't find it confusing or hard to follow ( sometimes I find fantasy a bit intimidating but I would recommend this to someone who might want to give fantasy a try) freya our mfc did get on my nerves a few times but I don't think I would actually want anything changed about her character she just had me yelling through the book a few times. Our mmc whit gave me some golden retriever vibes sometimes but I liked him. But that ending 😍😍😍😍😍 those last few pages.... I can't. I need the second book I need to know where we go from here. I need more povs from Ryker, raven, willow, Fatima and kirra. And I need one of my book girlies to read this so I have someone to discuss this with because right now I've just been re going over it in my head.

I also need a physical copy of this book 1. If you read my last post this book now hold a special meaning to me and 2. I know I'll be reading the second one as soon as I can get my hands on it.

I received an arc of this book, in exchange for an honest review.

I struggled to stay engaged with this story. Like many others, the ending twist was a highlight for me but it was the only one. I really enjoyed finding out about that twist timeline ending and then thinking to myself, how did I not catch that Lyra never ran into Whit or Freyah during their storyline??

As for Freyah and Whit, I couldn’t connect with their stories as individuals or as a couple, nor did I find myself caring to root for them. The emotional connection felt forced the entire way, including their eruption of lust in the alley. I understand other readers felt differently but I didn’t feel that these two characters were fleshed out enough and the dialogue fell flat compared to how drastically their “relationship” kept pivoting.

The overall direction has me curious enough to pick up the second book but I hope to get more depth across the board. The magic and world-building was interesting but the characters left much to be desired.

✨ARC Review✨
“It started with a curse. It will end with a promise.”🔥

The way this ended!🤯 I wasn’t expecting that at all and now I need book 2. I had an assumption about one of the things that happened and I got that correct. I was still surprised at the other stuff. Plot twist after plot twist. So many twists and I loved it!

“You are always in control with me.”
Freyah has never really explored more of the world. She is raised by her town while her father is constantly working. He is the sole blacksmith for the town. It has always been together.

“Well, you don’t have to hide from me, Oram Foster.”
“I find you fascinating”
Lyra is the princess of Ghoma. Instead of being stuck in the castle like all the other witches. She enjoys adventure, traveling outside of the castle, and doing things other witches did not do.

I really enjoyed how this book was broken up between Freyah and Lyra’s story. One being a human and the other being a witch and a princess. Seeing how both their lives were different yet at the same time intertwined. I was so interested and invested that I could not put the book down.

Having all the different POVs was amazing! It made it so easy to follow along and see the different parts of the story to see how everything plays together. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!

Thank you so much Meg Alivien for allowing me to be part of your ARC team. As always, my review is my opinion and thoughts.

This book was absolutely fantastic! I don’t even know where to begin! The storytelling and writing of Meg Alivien is phenomenal. I love the witch/demon fantasy vibe of this book and it makes for the perfect fall read.

The world building is so well done and the magic system unique to this story. However, the character development really stands out! Complex, emotional, and tortured, these characters are magnificently constructed. The relationships are intricate and complicated and I devoured all of it!

I love our FMC Freya. She loves fiercely and her courage always rises to the surface! The MMC Whit is full golden retriever vibe… even faced with impossible choices he’s always striving to do what’s best for those he loves. The supporting characters add so much depth and intrigue and I cannot wait to learn more about them (Raven, Ryker, Kirra, Fatima)! I have to say Queen Lema is the ultimate villainess and I’m here for it!

I really enjoyed that this story followed two parallel POVs between Freyah and the Queen’s sister, Princess Lyra, while also incorporating a few other characters to provide more insight. I had my suspensions about where the story was going and the plot twists don’t disappoint! Full of magic, betrayal, political intrigue, complex relationships, and a great cliffhanger I highly recommend picking up Of Magic and Men for the perfect Fall Fantasy Read ✨

Thank you to Meg for this ARC and allowing me to be a member of the street team.
We get to read numerous POV throughout which IMO really helps break things up, as well as making it easier to follow. There are witches, humans, demons/shifters and more. The plot twist at the end had me shook TBH, my mind was blown at how it changed the whole story!
I truly loved the romantic relationships that formed in this book (don’t want to spoil with names)
The witch queen Lema was truly evil and got so much joy out of punishing people that I hated her the whole time, but we get a little insight as to WHY she turned out that way later on. I know I already mentioned it but I’m still shook from the implications of what’s revealed at the end and I can’t wait to get to dive deeper into certain things and people in book two ❤️

I am without a word after this end that I didn’t see coming. My jaw dropped and little hints that were written throughout the book made total sense!!!! I can’t believe I didn’t figure it out earlier, I mean it makes SO much sense now.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The world-building was very well written. I had clear pictures in my head of every description that was there. It was so fun to get into this new fantasy story. There were very interesting two kinds of two parallel stories within this book. I enjoyed it even more at the end 🤭

The characters were very lovable, except Madam Lema, we are clear on that! When I met Whit, I told myself he would be the morally grey asshole of this story but no he’s totally a golden retriever and I loved it.
Freyah is a badass! Love her! Those two had a little love story that did not last very long but I do have high hopes for book 2 😉

The parallel story is about the queen's sister and a demon. It was short but so so important for the plot!!!!

I won’t lie, I found the middle part a bit slow but it was still enjoyable. Meg did a wonderful job with this story. I will definitely be reading the rest of the trilogy!!!

There is a lot going on in this book so it may take you a while to get hooked, but stick with it because it all comes together beautifully and I love how it sets us up so well for book 2. Last 10% of this book was fire.🔥 I really need book 2 to be announced quickly.

The fantasy was well developed. I loved the witchy vibes, the demons and all the twists took me my surprise completely.

Finally finished the ARC for this *amazing* book several days ago and now finally getting a moment to write out my review:

Of Magic And Men starts with a bang and ends with a f***ing explosion that you will not see coming (unless you cheat and read the ending first). I sat staring at the wall with my mouth open for about 5mins, followed by more staring and shaking my head saying, “What?!”

I’d seen other ARC readers’ posts with similar reactions so I knew that some twist was coming, but definitely did NOT see THAT coming. My only regret with reading Of Magic And Men is that I now have to wait until next year to find out what happens next! Thank you so much to Meg and her team for providing me with an advanced copy to review - I will definitely be getting a physical copy for my collection!

If you’re into romantic fantasy, I highly, highly recommend picking up Of Magic And Men. This first book does an excellent job of introducing the world of Ghoma, and the history leading up to current events. You get to know the characters through multiple points of view that are clearly separated - some don’t like multi-POV but I feel like it adds a lot of dimension to this story! Peep Meg Alivien’s Instagram page for sneak peeks - I don’t want to give away anything more than she already has because I really want y’all to go preorder and read this book!

Meg has special preorders up in her Etsy shop for a limited time that come signed and also include a special print and bookmark featuring the two main characters - go to the link tree in her Instagram bio or search for her shop on Etsy!

Fun, witchy fall read! I enjoyed the story lines and the multiple POVs although having the two simultaneous love stories I felt it left you longing for a little more connection to the characters.
Overall really enjoyed the twist at the end, and I usually I can spot the outcome this one had me totally surprised and I really loved the revelation, my only wish was that there was one or two more chapters after the reveal that delved in the backstory as to HOW the twist actually went down.
Overall, it was a good read and I will look for more from M. Alivien in the future!

Witches, demons, curses... this fantasy book had such an intriguing storyline and filled with adventure. I'm on tenterhooks for the next book.

Tropes:
Witches/demons
Prisoner/Guard romance
Malificent villian
Magical system
Forced proximity
Multiple POV
Cliffhanger

I had to process my thoughts on this one because holy cannoli that cliffhanger/plot twist. So... yes, there is a cliffhanger, but honestly, even though I knew it was coming, I still wasn't prepared for it. I won't spoil anything here, but just know that it's a good one.

With all the multiple POVs, you really get a sense that something is building... something is going to happen that links all these people together. Even though the queen, Madame Lema, is the villain, you actually understand why she got that way. I love complex villains, and Madame Lema has her layers. I felt bad for the princess Lyra. She was stuck in a world that she couldn't easily escape from and just wanted to live peacefully. I was glad she found Oram to be herself with. As far as Freyah and Whit... I am hoping they can find some kind of happiness because damn... so many obstacles keep hitting them, and I just want them to be happy! 😭

So much can happen in the next book, and I'm really excited to see where everyone ends up. I highly recommend this book to fantasy lovers but also first-time fantasy readers. The world building was easy to understand and follow throughout the entire book. I seriously can't wait for the next book!

Thank you to the author for giving me an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own and offered voluntarily.

I feel hoodwinked by the ending 😂 It took me a minute to get on board with the MCs, but I was curious about Oram from the start - I hope there's more of him in book 2. This book is perfect if you're looking for something with witchy autumn vibes; I enjoyed the descriptions of the castle getting ready for Samhain 🎃 (3.5 ⭐️).

Meg Alivien's debut book is a fun ride. She delivers a world full of rising heroines, devious villains, those struggling to find their place, and so much more.

The characters:
These characters were fun. I am excited to see what challenges they face in book two. Freyah, Whit, and the others will take you on a ride, but be careful -- not everything is what it seems. And not everyone is who they pretend to be. I loved watching the characters make choices that effected so many different people as events played out. Watching Freyah fall for a certain characters also put a smile on my face.

The plot:
The multiple narrators on this one slowly pull back the curtain on a much larger plot filled with political intrigue and subterfuge. I do not want to spoil anything but trust no one and nothing. This world is full of twists.

If you like he falls first, forced proximity, forbidden love, political intrigue, multiple POVs, and unreliable narrators, then add this one to your TBR.

Special thanks to Meg for an ARC of her debut book!

In a world full of magic, witches use their power of Future Sight to defeat shape-shifting warlocks to gain the throne of Ghoma. A curse is cast on the remaining warlocks (any man with power) that they should be stuck permanently in their demon form as long as a descendent of Ruella sits on the throne.

From the first page, I was pulled into this fascinating world of magic, of witches and demons, and the humans who are trying to live through the chaos around them. Freya fascinated me, because even though she didn't believe she was strong, her courage would always rise when it was most needed. After everything that happened to her, she could still have compassion and understanding for the people around her that had betrayed her. She could forgive, but she was still building up strength for whatever happened next, and to do what she needed to protect herself and the people she loves.

And Whit - swoon! Even though I wanted to hate him at the beginning, he quickly proves himself to be an excellent man. He is just trying his best to keep his moral compass straight when all of his circumstances would give him an excuse to be evil. I loved reading chapters in his perspective and the love he has for his sisters.

I loved how all the POV's were handled throughout the book. With so much going on, it was great to read the inner workings of all the characters and what made them tick. Even with this insight, a lot of their plans were still concealed so well. The ending! OMG! I had a slight inkling of what was going on, but I was not prepared for how it all came together or what some of the characters ended up doing. The secrets! I need answers, lol!

I can't recommend this book enough and I am anxiously awaiting book two....which is only a year away (cries).

If you’re looking to add a witchy book to your Fall tbr, put this one on your list!

You’ll get -
Witches
Maleficent vibes
Shifters
Demons
Slow burn
Cinnamon roll MMC
Fierce FMC

This was a great book to kick off the Fall season with.

I’m going to start with the villain, Madam Lema, first, because I actually found her to be one of my favorite characters. She’s complex, and while she is evil, you find her motives can be somewhat understandable. You get drawn in and almost want to sympathize, even if she isn’t a loveable character, which all works towards making her an excellently written villain. There’s a parallel story involving Lema, which adds to the intrigue of the story.

The world building was done well. I didn’t have any troubles picturing it all as I read the book. It unfolded easily, wasn’t overly detailed, but well described.

Whit is a total cinnamon roll, even if he is Freya’s captor and guard. We find there’s so much more too him. They have a nice, slow burn relationship, although it doesn’t seem to last, and I’m curious to see what happens in the next book.

Great side characters, and the multiple POVs were done well.
Things did hit a pretty heavy lull for me, which made it easy to put the book down for a bit, but also just as easy to pick it up again.

There’s a bit of a cliffhanger at the end, but if you’re paying attention throughout the book it’s not quite a huge surprise, but also leaves you excited for the next book - which I am!!!

Well done, Meg!!

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review. Thank you!
This is Meg’s debut novel, and I’m excited to see her writing career blossom. I think we can expect an exciting continuation of her series.

Took a chance on this one for fantasy stuff your kindle day and BOY AM I SO GLAD I DID. the fact this is meg alivien’s debut???? I am so freaking excited to see where she takes this next. 4.5⭐️ but rounded up for the sheer fact that this is such an impressive debut and it sets up the world so well, I absolutely cannot wait for the next one!!

I went into this thinking it was a standalone and screeched in giddiness when I got to the MAJOR reveal/cliffhanger at the end and realized it was going to be a series. Soooo well done - it takes very impactful writing and character development for me to get invested in characters when there’s multiple POVs but this got me hooked. I’ve read single POV books with less character development than this one that had 7 or 8.

Fantasy world building is so difficult, finding the right balance between explaining everything without leaving your readers with glossy eyes or feeling like you’re talking down to them. This hit the sweet spot - not overly complex or too simplistic. The writing is crisp and concise, albeit a little over the top sometimes in terms of synonym usage (but that’s just a personal pet peeve of mine - you don’t need 156 synonyms for big, you can just say big!!!)

The villain is so intriguing to me, I’m excited to see how she develops. I loved that she was one of the POVS we got! And the backstory given near the end had me in a chokehold, I hope the author expands on it in the next book!

1.5/5🌶️ for anyone curious (with a slow burn romance that I am excited to see develop!!)

Let’s just get to it. I genuinely liked this book.

Cons: At times it was a little slow. Not terrible, but a tad bit slow. The relationship between the MMC and FMC happened incredibly quick, no build up really so none of the fun tension that comes with enemies to lovers. It was more like strangers to lovers-ish in 3 days time.

Pros: The book was pretty well written. I only found one typo (I don’t look for them, they jump out at me lol) but the word itself wasn’t misspelled. It was misused. There was enough world building that you got the gist of it, and just enough character building to get you through. All in all, it was enough that you understood what you needed to but more of both would have been nice, though! There was romance and a couple of “spicy” scenes, but not super graphic, which I am fine with. Not all sex scenes need to be over the top. The spice was light though, so I would rate the spice level a 1.5/5 probably.

Although I suspected a plot twist with some of the hints given in the book, I was most definitely not expecting the twist we got. I was very surprised. And that’s a good thing!

I will definitely read the next book in the series when it is released this year.

I am not a professional book reviewer. Just a woman, who doesn’t look at trigger warnings because that is not important to me, who loves reading and more specifically reading well written and captivating books, where spice adds to the plot but is not the whole plot. I am also not a literary critic. The reviews I post are from the emotions the books evoke from me. Take that as you will!

A thrilling, romantic, and witchy tale that is fantasy at its finest. Of Magic and Men by Meg Alivien is a mesmerizing and romantic fantasy that weaves together elements of magic, complex characters, and a world on the brink of chaos. 5/5 stars.

The world-building in this novel is outstanding, immersing readers in a world of magic, witches, demons, and human struggles. The narrative skillfully explores the consequences of a curse that transforms warlocks into demons as long as a descendent of Ruella holds the throne of Ghoma. I was captivated from the first page.

The two main characters (though there are several noteworthy others you'll meet), Freya and Whit, are complex and compelling. Freya's unwavering courage adds depth to her character, and Whit, initially questionable, evolves into a man of integrity and a strong moral compass. And their romance was swoon-worthy. I also loved the multiple POVs. Sometimes it can be difficult for me to become immersed in a multi-POV story, but it absolutely works for this book. I loved it.

And I'm not going to spoil anything, but that ENDING (!!!). Still stunned. The ending truly is a whirlwind of unexpected twists and revelations, leaving readers eager for answers and anticipating the next book.

Of Magic and Men truly is a captivating fall fantasy read that will leave romantic and fantasy enthusiasts craving more. It is a must-read!

Highlights: Witches, Demons, Humans, struggle of power, enemies to lovers, coming of age, sacrifice
Favorite Character: Freyah
Honorable Mentions: So many.. all of the characters were amazing
Character that grew on me: Kirra
Favorite Scene: When Freyah makes it to the cottage at the end of the book. Mind = Blown
Overall thoughts: Holy Frick. At the start of the book I was kinda up in the air… wasn’t entirely loving the two story lines. It grew on me throughout the book and then the end was a literal slap in the face. My mouth literally dropped, I looked around the room as if to say “did anyone else just see that.”
Star Rating: 5 out of 5
Why: The stories were beautifully written, the characters brilliantly crafted. The multiple point of views, tying in small details in the story. The subtle hints left throughout the book, making you think “if I can see the twist coming.” Yeah I’m sure you were part right but the fricking mic drop at the end of the book. I will be talking about the book until I die.
Predictions: About 75% through the book I predicted Freyah was a witch, didn’t see the other part though, HA. OMFG Koa is her brother - I just realized this. I think Wendi is going to be alive.
