She’s stuck working a dead-end job in an isolated paranormal community. When they come under attack, can this snarky teen defend those she loves?

Kricket Jones is bored. Trapped with her family in a heavily warded enclave because of their dormant dragon DNA, the nineteen-year-old’s biggest adrenaline rush comes from crafting forbidden charms on the sly. But her mundane life takes a breakneck turn into danger when strange explosions rock the community and everyone in town falls under a mind-controlled spell.

Frustrated when the local gargoyle guards are more worried about her use of ancient magic than the mysterious invasion, Kricket dodges their handcuffs and sets out to reverse the curse. And as the determined young woman fights to rescue her vulnerable friends, her dramatic show of skill makes her a target for the unknown assailants and the supernatural council.

Can she unfurl her true talents without burning her home to a crisp?

Cursed Dragon is the suspenseful sixth standalone book in the Creatures of the Otherworld urban fantasy series. If you like resourceful heroines, dark humor, and edge-of-your-seat tension, then you’ll adore Brogan Thomas’s chaotic struggle for survival.

Brogan lives in Ireland with her husband and their eleven furry children: five furry minions of darkness (aka the cats), four hellhounds (the dogs), and two traditional unicorns (fat, hairy Irish cobs).

In 2019 she embraced her craziness by writing about the imaginary people that live in her head. Her first love is her husband followed by her number-one favourite furry child Bob the cob, then reading. When not reading or writing, she can be found knee-deep in horse poo and fur while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

289 pages isn't nearly enough

This book is fantastic but honestly not nearly long enough. Kricket is a smart, funny, awesome FMC. Soren has potential but we never get to see his full MMC ability. Forrest once again solidifies herself as the bestie badass friend we all want to have. Brogan manages a fantastic overlap with Pepper's storyline and we get to revisit multiple old characters. Honestly I could read another 200 pages and would probably still want more

Tldr: Love the premise and enjoyed the plot, but the male lead’s personality changed too suddenly and he seemed rather one dimensional. Some small spoilers ahead.

Fun book - I loved the idea of a dragon FMC, she had a likeable personality, and the entire premise of a magic charm maker was a breath of fresh air.

However, the male lead didnt seem well fleshed out. He was mean at first, then suddenly really nice to her, cares for her deeply and likes her? I get that he’s the romantic interest, but his behaviour change is all very unexplained and unexpected. In real life I wouldn’t trust him one bit given his original behaviour. Because of this, the MC’s trust in him (and willingness to share secret info about her abilities) is honestly hard to believe.

Throughout the entire book we don’t know much about this gargoyle at all. I feel like all I know about him is his name. Who is he and what is his backstory? Why were the gargoyles in charge of guarding the dragon bloods? What role does he play in all of this, because he must be some really important person to be personally in charge of a high profile person like Kricket. It makes sense that Kricket would fall for a nice and handsome protector, but it just feels like he is nice simply because the author needed a nice male lead for Kristen to fall for. He just doesn’t have much depth in personality beyond his role as a nice male lead.

Another person that changed her personality too suddenly is her mum. She went from supportive and caring to outright vicious and intentionally hurtful to her own daughter all of a sudden. It just seemed rather unrealistic and unexpected. There wasn’t sufficient foreshadowing to hint that she would be this mean later on.

Despite this, I really did enjoy the plot and would love to read more about Kricket. I also really hope the author deepens the gargoyle male lead and explores more facets of his personality and backstory in the next book.

A beautiful magical escape

I really liked that this book was different than most paranormal books. In this book she doesn't know that she's anything but partial witch and as she grows it's just very exciting to go on that journey with her. I was Disappointed when the book ended and was kind of hoping that there would be a sequel.

loved it

Happy I read Kricket’s story. It was a really good story, sad at times and intense but also a story about a strong female character that fights for the victims and only wants to help people. I wasn’t sure half way through how this would end but I really liked it . The story all comes to get her really well.

This is my first Brogan Thomas read, although I do have the rest of the books in the series on my TBR, unread as yet, this lovely author gifted me with this book and as they are standalones, I jumped in and yes, I chastised myself, MAJORLY chastised myself! Like what the heck Beba? Really Beba? WHY Beba? Ok, so, now that I've soundly cuffed myself about the head, here's why I did...

Let me introduce you to Kricket, working in retail challenges the best and I can feel her frustration oozing from every pore. Trapped in a town by serious wards because of "a taint" in her blood, yeah, Dragon blood is a no no for the big bad world. Oh and she's seen as a trouble maker, a persona non grata....Frustration personified! And then she spots a gargoyle, a peacekeeper. A gargoyle who shouldn't be there. A beautiful gargoyle, Kricket's words, not mine and her life goes topsy turney, explosively, literally! As soon as I met Kricket, I adored her, she might try to "blend" in but she's no yes person, she isn't a conformist, she has a mind of her own, a bright mind, a stiffled mind, my kinda gal. She's also exceptional in making charms, exceptional in her magic talent, not that she was allowed to use any of her skill, severely forbidden skills, she makes a plan. Gracious me, she even has a plan and a spell to get her family to safety.... Remarkable is what she is. Oh, yeah, sorry, there are invaders in this "safe, protected" town, the inhabitants bespelled, and all hell has broken loose. Even Kricket's magic reaches heights of immense proportions, magic she shouldn't have, magic that should be extinct.

What a ride through dangers, uncertainty, a plot by a self serving cult that threatened all, a council that's corrupt on every level, lies and deception, a magic that bloomed like a beautiful flower, characters so relatable and such fun to follow. Outstanding in it's unfolding, outstanding in it's delivery, outstanding in it's mystery and outstanding in it's strong characters. Not strong as in physical strength, although they alk are, but it's not easy to convey each character to it's fullest and yet Brogan does it splendidly. Kricket, everything she is, she's more. As the story develops I got to see the "more", I got to see her flourish, I got to witness her incredible transformation and boy was THAT awesome! I did get a few jolts along the way, the author really challenged Kricket! Oh my gosh was everything thrown at her! Soren, a true gargoyle, outer skin tough, almost hiding his caring, gentle, cooking loving self. Forrest left a huge mark on me, to see tiny, tough, loud mouthed, battle crazy warrior in full swing, elevated her statue to me. Kricket's mum on the other hand....gah, how could a mum be so cruel??

This amazeballs story consumed me. As it navigated it's way powerfully into me, it latched on, hard, heck I might as well have been chained to my chair, I was immovable until the shackles binding me shattered on concluding the book. I suspect Kricket used a charm or two on me.... without a doubt, Ms Thomas used a charm on me, not a forbidden one, a adorned one, an embellished one so compelling that I had little choice but to eagerly clasp the charm in both hands, grateful to Brogan for the choice to follow Kricket, the choice to revil in the accomplished storytelling, the choice to be entrapped in a strong plot, the choice to embark into a unique world, this is a charm I'm NOT relinquishing any time soon! Now I need to read more Brogan Thomas, urgently!

I enjoyed this latest book in the Creatures of the Otherworld series and loved the main character, Kricket. As a half witch, with some dragon blood DNA in her as well, Kricket has an amazing ability to create magical charms out of virtually nothing. No one else can do this, but she doesn't realise, at first , that she is unique in this ability. Some of her powerful charms appeared in some of the previous books, so the name Gary Chappell will be familiar if you have read those ones too.

Living under the Creature Council's so-called protection, anyone with a hint of dragon blood is kept in a warded town with huge restrictions on every part of their lives. They cannot leave the town, but when a nefarious group called the Claw Brotherhood attack the town, everything changes. No one understands what is going on. Kricket has to get her family to safety, but risks her own life in doing so. Suddenly she is the one everyone seems to be after!

I loved Kricket and her abilities and how her story tied in with Pepper's especially. Forrest and Owen made another return as well. Love how all these characters make small reappearances in the following books.

My only problem with this book was the so-called love interest. Soren was a gargoyle in charge of protecting the inhabitants of the town and to be honest I didn't like him at all. He was rude and aggressive at first trying to capture Kricket once he realised she had magic and then with no apparent reason suddenly changed, rescued her, kept her safe and said he liked her. I feel like in this book and the previous one, Cursed Fae, the romance is thrown in as an afterthought and is not part of the plot at all. This story didn't need a romantic element to be a great one - Kricket made that happen all on her own! I'm definitely not one for a so-called love interest to start off mean and nasty and then suddenly change for no reason into having feelings for the FMC. There was no real build up in their relationship at all and we don't really know anything about him either. I think it would have been better to leave that part out and have more about Kricket's new form!

A great read for the most part and I'm looking forward to starting the author's new series soon as well!

I discovered Creatures of the Otherworld series a couple of years ago and quickly delved into the books and became obsessed. The world that Brogan has created is like no other. Humans and creatures (vampires, shifters, witches, etc) all live alongside each other, whilst glaring at each other and chanting curses under their breaths about it! The Cursed Dragon is based in the UK, like the rest of the series and Kricket has grown up living in an isolated town, surrounded by a bubble to keep everyone with dormant Dragon DNA isolated from the rest of the country. Kricket, whilst giving the impression of being down trodden, has secretly encompassed her gifts and has grown up making plans to help her family escape.

The character development that Brogan writes is just phenomenal. Kricket is a down-to-earth, kick-ass, feisty woman who owns this story. She is both the villain and the hero, you feel everything she is going through. The trauma, the decisions, the emotions that she feels, you are part of her journey. I love how the male main character is a side character, the protectiveness of Soren is just perfect, however he doesn't stand in her way or take over. The story is Kricket and her journey to becoming the woman she was born to be. I was very excited to see characters from the other books again, they feel like family now and I love how each of the woman continue to be strong and are saving the world themselves.

If you love a series with phenomenal character development and world-building with female main characters who are literal role models (honestly, I think we should be appealing to Netflix to turn the books into a TV series!) and strong storytelling that reels you in and gives you all of the feels, then this is the book for you! Each of the books in the series are standalone, however, I would recommend reading them in order as characters from each book pop up into others and it helps if you already know them and their individual stories.

First off, let me start by saying when I found out I got an ARC copy, I was so ecstatic!! I have loved all of the Creatures of the Otherworld books and this was no exception! Kricket is a young woman who has lived in a warded "bubble" for most of her life. The entire town has been held there for their "protection" as they have dragon blood (not shifters, just in their bloodline). But one day, explosions rock the town and teams of mercenaries are sent in and now Kricket must use her hidden powers to save her family and the town. Kricket is kick @$$ young woman. She has hidden her power to make powerful magical charms to save up money to help her family escape. But now she will need those and more to help save the entire town and take down the baddies.
She is definitely amazing and powerful, like all the other MC's in this series. Even though she doesn't have the most confidence, she perseveres and keeps trying. And she does what is right even if she doesn't want to (Like helping Soren). And Soren is great addition and I love the fact that it's not immediate infatuation for Kricket. She is wary of him and keeps her distance. And Soren doesn't push anything as well.
This was another book where you get all the emotional feels for the characters as well. You feel the terror, the shock, the sadness at some parts and the relief with Kricket. There was one part where I was just devastated for poor Kricket (no spoliers!).
And I love that we get to see more of the previous MC's from the rest of the series. And we finally get the background on the Gary Chappell charms!! And while these are all standalones, I suggest reading them all since it will help give you a better idea of all the background. (And because they are all amazing!) Also because it explains backstories for some of the other books as well!

My Thoughts:
I was thinking, what kind of psychological tactic is the gargoyle playing at? And what is his purpose for doing so? Or is he just a shithead blaming Kricket for being born? What kind of public service training did these enforcers had? Or was there any training at all?! You do not blame the victim for being a victim. Like, WTF man! I know this is fiction. Still, that gargoyle so needs to be fired!!

I know that there are mothers like that... but, geez!!

Couldn't wait for the next book in the series just to see how Kricket is faring after the events in this book!

At this point I am already Poppy Royana's die-hard fan. Having said that, I do not remember the sing-song in the other books. But here it is. Normally, I hate sing-song narrators. But this is Poppy Royana we are talking about here. So, forgiven and tolerated it is!

Cursed Dragon is book 6 in the Creatures of the Otherworld series and it absolutely delivers! Kricket is trapped in a boring dead end job in a town cut off from the real world because the Creature Council has decided anyone descended from dragon blood poses a threat to humanity. Never mind most every Dragon blood in the town has no magic at all. However, Kricket cones from a powerful line of witches but her abilities are a bit off. Scratch that they are way off enough so that her mom. Tells her she must never use her magic it’s to strange and abnormal it would bring the wrong attention to the family so best to not use it at all.

Kricket dreams of a better life and freedom for her family. So against her mother’s wishes she secretly created an impossible portal to the regular world and had secretly been creating and selling magical charms to the outside world.

She almost had enough money set aside to escape with her family when the unthinkable happens and her city is attacked. Krickets world just became way more dangerous and nit in a good way as she realizes she has drawn attention to herself and someone very bad wants her power.

Thus book is a standalone in the series but you get glimpse of completely awesome characters from previous books and knowing those characters backstory is something you definitely want to read! I absolutely 💯 recommend reading every single book. The series is amazing and once again Brogan has created a lovable and endearing character that will blow your socks off with her inner strength, resilience and power! Get the series and bing it today it’s absolutely worth it.

Good

Kricket is a witch with a powerful, and perhaps a little odd magic. It’s a magic that comes in useful however, when the warded community she lives in comes under attack.
Unfortunately, it’s also the magic that makes her a target of the very same beings that were trying to destroy her world!

Another enjoyable standalone story in Brogan Thomas’s Creatures of the Otherworld series. This time, we meet Kricket, who is rather unorthodox. It’s actually not the first time we’ve come across her magic in the series, and a few rather enjoyable cameo appearances by other characters from this world, make it clear just how important she has been to them. I rather enjoyed the visits from the other characters, because it’s always nice to see how they’re doing (plus Forrest is just funny).
I’m really hoping we hear more from Kricket in the future, because she is definitely an intriguing character- there seems to be a lot more to her story than we yet know!
This is an action packed, magical tale, with the very slightest hint of romance, and a heaping dash of danger and mystery. It’s perfect for the urban fantasy fan who wants more fantasy adventure than romance, and for those who have loved the rest of Thomas’s Otherworld books. While it’s not imperative that you have read those stories first, I recommend it if only for world building, and the enjoyment of the impact Kricket has had on that world.

Brogan Thomas understands pain.

All of her characters have to overcome either physical or emotional pain (or most often both). In this, our heroine, Kricket, starts off bored (it's a painful emotion too). She and her family have been imprisoned in a warded bubble to "protect" them.

I firmly believe when someone is doing something for "your safety" that's the time to run, and this story proves that belief.

See, the people in the bubble all have dragon blood. That's right. What are they being protected from?

When it all goes to hell, which was inevitable, Kricket, because of her unique abilities, has an advantage. She needs everything in her bag of tricks to rescue her family and keep herself and the rest of the town alive.

What follows is a book full of action, villainy, magic, hope, and destruction. And that's when her real pain begins. No spoilers here.

Although these are marketed as stand alones (and they can definitely be read like that) the interconnected world enriches everything. Some mysteries from the other books are solved, beloved characters from those have cameos, and of course like all of them, Kricket's denouement is triumphant!

You don't want to miss any of these books! They will take you on all of the emotions, but you can be sure of HEA for all of them! This one is not an exception!

I devoured it in one long, delicious sitting

From the terror of having her supposedly “protected” town attacked by strange, deadly creatures, to her twin brothers disappearing and having her mother lash out at her as if it was her fault, Kricket’s formerly charmed life has been turned upside down. And a certain gargoyle seems to always be nearby when bad things happen.

The action in this story is practically nonstop. And I was thrilled when a few familiar faces popped in to help Kricket with her dragon problem. Including one cafe that makes heavenly chocolate cake beloved by a certain tiny, pink-haired wolf shifter.

The Otherworld is still a tough place to live in, but I have hope that there are enough good people to outweigh the bad. Especially if Kricket gets to help out. I have a feeling (desire? demand?) that we’re going to get more of Kricket’s story in a later book. I hope this isn’t a spoiler, but there are a LOT of loose ends left undone after the last page. Plus, Kricket is such an amazingly nuanced and complicated character, who wouldn’t want more of her story?

Brogan Thomas has done it again with Cursed Dragon, delivering another captivating tale that showcases a knack for crafting strong, female heroines. In this latest installment, we follow Kricket who navigates a journey filled with relatable struggles from her childhood that shape her into a fierce warrior.

Thomas has a remarkable ability to weave emotional depth into the characters, making their challenges feel personal and compelling. As a reader, you find yourself fiercely rooting for them, eager to join them in their battles against the injustices they face. Yet, what’s truly remarkable is how Thomas allows these heroines to evolve on their own, shining brighter with each page.

The narrative flows almost poetically, immersing you in a world where strength and vulnerability coexist. Thomas's storytelling not only entertains but also inspires, leaving you eager for more.

I can’t wait to dive into Bitten Shifter and meet the next badass heroine in what promises to be another unforgettable journey. Highly recommended!

Kricket has dragon blood in her DNA and with her family has been trapped in a warded town filled with other people with dragon blood. She is miserable in her job and life is pretty boring. She is able to make unusual and powerful magic charms which helps with her life.
When invaders into her town start killing people, her charms become very handy. They also play a major part in the rest of the book.
There are a few characters from previous books that make a welcome addition.
This book has lots of action, with great characters and interaction between them, some humour. I found Kricket annoying at times but her reactions were perfect for the book.
I really enjoyed the book but felt that it could have finished a bit better, another chapter to finalize everything. I know this series is stand alone books with some connection between the books so I’m hoping that more of Kricket’s story will continue. There is definitely an opening for it to go on.
But it is well worth reading.

This book would have been 5 stars if it didn’t feel like the book was somehow missing an ending. All kinds of plot and drama build, an in-depth world is created, and then bam, book is over. We never see how what happened during this book tied to the rest of the world, to characters we know from other books, especially the General. And I think that there may have been two sentences that made up the entirety of the romantic element. It was truly non-existent. The relationships overall did not have time to develop. It was a really odd book and I felt like there was so much more that could have been written. The resolution was lightning fast.

I want to know what happened next! Cursed Fae was similar but both the wrap-up and romance were a little better. Overall disappointed because the earlier books and Tru’s books were SO much better. This is a serious letdown. I loved Tru and Forrest’s stories but I may be done with this author’s books.

Brogan Thomas has done it again. The phenomenal character development and world building continues in Cursed Dragon. As Kricket’s journey progresses we meet up with some favorite characters from past books, discover a secret identity and learn so much more about the dragons of the Otherworld.
I love how each book in the series can be read as stand alone, but if you read them all there are amazing connecting points between each story. I could not put this book down and would have read it in one sitting if grown up responsibilities hadn’t interfered. I would read an entire quartet about Kricket.
If you love relatable characters, magic, and heroines that can save their own day, this book is definitely for you.
I would give this book 10 stars if that was an option.
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

The latest in this great collection of UF standalone books doesn't disappoint. Kricket and her family have been detained in a warded community "for their safety', because of their latent dragon DNA. When the town is attacked, Kricket discovers that she is wanted for her powers, which are more special than she has previously thought.

I love this book. It is on the dark-ish side, thematically, but still entertaining with a happy ending. Kricket as a character has so much potential, and I hope she will pop up in later books, as the earlier MCs do. Her magic is interesting and a bit different from the norm, which was fun to see. Soren is lovely, and, again, I hope to see more from him. I really wish there had been an epilogue to this, as I felt bereft when the book ended, I was enjoying it so much.

Fast, fun and wonderful.

I'm a big Brogan Thomas fan. Her books are always full of wonderful, relatable, flawed characters. Characters you root for, feel for, and want to see again and again. Cursed Dragon is no different. I also love that Kricket is a reluctant hero. I mean, honestly, who wouldn't have her reservations when faced with her decisions. It just makes her more empathetic.

My only complaint (is it really a complaint though?), is that I always want more. As with most of her books, Cursed Dragon leaves a lot unanswered and leaves the reader wanting more. It's a good thing, because she leaves the door open for more Kricket in the future, but it's also frustrating because I want to know everything now.

I can't wait to see what happens next in the Creatures of the Otherworld series!

Cursed dragon

Wonderful fantasy. In this unique world characters with traces of dragon DNA have been isolated, basically imprisoned, for their own alleged protection. Our heroine has very unique magic which she hides while making and selling charms to fund her family's escape. Suddenly their community is attacked by powerful creatures and the adventure begins. There are lots of plot holes and this story seems to be adjacent to others in this series, Creatures of the Otherworld. Perhaps the answers are found in the other books, but I've only read the one about Forrest and this one. So, this isn't really a stand alone due to all the questions, but it was an enjoyable read.

Great Story

I have really enjoyed Brogan Thomas’ “Cursed “ series. These standalone books feature fantastic individual female main characters from her richly imagined Otherworld and are each happy ending stories. The supporting characters are often portrayed in other of the series books, and as you read, complex family and friend dynamics, enemy and clan ties are made clearer. Although it’s not necessary to read the books in any particular order, or to have read them all to understand each story individually, as you add to the collection, the richness of the back stories and the overall world is an added bonus. Cursed Dragon was another delightful addition to the series. I’m looking forward to reading more stories set in this world.

Whew that was quite the ride! A nail biting, on the edge of your seat kind of ride! LOVE love love that we got to see some of our fav previous characters set in this world along with our new characters! Soren the gargoyle is rather dreamy! I am ever hopeful that the mention of Tru Dennison working behind the scenes means another amazing book in the Rebel series, set in the same world. It is possible that was just my wishful thinking, but I can’t help hoping we see more books from Brogan! I highly recommend this excellent read!

Awesome edition to the series

WOW, what a great book, the imagination of this author is off the scale.
Kricket is a wonderful addition to the series, she is smart, funny and very resourceful, quite a few revelations in this book about a certain charm maker which i wont comment much on as I dont wont to spoil it for anyone.
It was great to catch up with Forrest and nanny hound, and as always the cafe with the Liz scored on the table
If you have never read this authors work you are missing out, I would recommend any of her books, you will not be disapointed

I loved it

I have read every book in the series and I love how the author makes little references to the other books in the series - and was even making those references before the rest of the books had been written and released.

Kricket is a wonderful young lady, and her story is great. I liked Soren, he's a gentle giant with a tough exterior - both literally and figuratively. I wish there had been just a little bit more to the ending though, making that scene just a little longer would've been awesome.

Survival is all when your world is on the line

Kricket is just trying to get through her shift at the supermarket when the control she’s tried to gain over her life comes crashing down along with several nearby buildings. But there’s a backup plan. Only activating the plan and saving her family is not the solution Kricket thought it would be.

Magic, shifters and evil machinations as well as new found friends are part of the journey to truth of who she truly is.

Can wait to see if we catch up with Kricket in future books. Well written fast paced book that I loved.

This book starts DARK. Death squads dark. I wasn't sure I was going to finish it for the first many chapters, but fortunately, it takes a major turn around the middle and brings us into the main universe of this series, with cameos and tie-ins to characters from prior books. I do love the tie in to the magical charms that were so coveted and valuable in prior books. And I'm glad that all the baddies got it by the end. There's not much romance, just a romantic interest, which was fine by me. I could see spin-offs for this character in the future.

A little disappointed

I liked the book but I got really irritated with some of her decisions. She kept putting herself in danger for people undeserving. I though she was going to meet the only dragon in existence but nooo, the book ended and it was no show. I can't believe the way the book ended, it was unfinished. It shouldn't be a Stan alone book. The story needs to continue to meet the general and for her to be a dragon. There are people up there who still wants her. I don't understand why the author finished the book so abruptly. I'm very unhappy..😕

I want more from you! You have a rare gift.

I have read all six of your books and have rated them all 10+! But I am really unhappy that there are no more. I want the stories of each woman to continue … I hope you have plans for the sequels.

Your books contained the perfect balance for myself; a balance between character definition, storyline with enough drama to keep me interested, but not so much drama that I am anxious! I am 71 years old and cannot take too much suspense, just enough to keep me reading. Thank you Brogan.
