Automaton has been one of my biggest surprises year-to-date, so when i saw that Ian Young had released a short story collection i was all in
To preface, i am generally more miss than hit with short story collections, and like any such collection this had some which resonated better than others.
This is a series of short stories that straddle a few different genres, and are in order of when they were written, which makes this a fascinating insight into the evolution of Young's writing style over time. They range from a couple of pages long (Breathing in the Dark/The Red Dress) to 9 pages (A Walk in the Woods), and each manages to cram in a surprising amount of detail, with stories Tranquility, The Tower and The Correct Answer (the last of which is linked to Automaton) being my personal highlights.
This book is under £3 at time of purchase,and is also available on KU. It comes in at under 75 pages long, making it a super quick that is well worth checking out.
