Psychoanalysis and Sovereignty in Popular Vampire Fictions (Studies in Popular Culture

Rate this book
Though she engages psychoanalysis, Powell (film and literature, Manchester Metropolitan U.) says she does not merely extend the long history of psychoanalytic interpretations of the vampire, but tests its application to a body of fantasy that celebrates Plenitude. She explores the uncanny modalities of eroticism in vampire literature and film, identifies shortcomings of the overwhelming focus on sexuality in current Gothic studies, and presents the vampire as a popular cultural version of transgressive human sovereignty. Her argument extends Nietzsche's work to literature and film, and proposes a metaphysics of vampire fantasy. The text is double spaced. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
