The Rules of Playing with Fire

Rate this book
Rule #1: Do not play with fire.

Sona Thomas isn’t looking for love. An assistant professor working toward her tenure, she is content with her life and career. Until she meets Mihir. He is enigmatic, charming, brilliant, and everything she needs to stay away from. After two heartbreaking relationships, Sona knows better than to touch fire with her bare hands. Too bad she can’t seem to resist the hot ball of magnetism that keeps drawing her in.

Mihir Seth doesn’t do relationships. The success of his business rests on his carefully curated image as a cold-hearted, ruthless man. Then, the warm and sassy Sona walks into his life, spinning his world off its axis. She matches him wit for wit and has him rethinking his long-held stance on love and commitment, until a shocking revelation threatens to upend his dreams. His search for the truth eventually brings him to Sona’s doorstep with a question he will she allow him back in her life?

Now, Sona must decide if she can afford to withstand the loss of Mihir’s fire, or risk being consumed by his flames again. The thing about fire is, once you’ve felt its touch, your entire world feels cold without it.

The Rules of Playing with Fire is a steamy, angsty contemporary romance with South Asian characters.

Okay, I definitely need a few deep breaths to do this right.

Beginning with the extremely obvious, the banter and the way the love story of Mihir and Sona progresses is truly amazing. Beautiful. Lovely. *enter more synonymous adjectives*

More importantly, however, I particularly appreciate the discussion of several topics that need to be spoken about. Be it gender disparity, discrimination on the basis of looks, or adoption. Without ever coming across as preachy, this book boldly speaks about all of this and comes out a winner. Truly something to be treasured and appreciated far and wide!

Another thing I absolutely loooooved is the portrayal of the parent-child relationships. Yes, our parents are more involved in our lives than the global standard and this book proves how it can be a positively empowering presence. Like in the earlier book, both sides of parents being lovingly supportive while not being afraid of calling out their kids when they are being silly was amazing to read about. Yes, there were tears. Several of them. Multiple times.

Oh and, the ten rules?! Fire themselves, truly!! 🤌🏻🤌🏻

All of this to say that I am forever grateful for my advance copy and that I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Mihir and Sona before they meet the world ♥️

I totally loved their banter in this one!

MIHIR & SONA💗

Tropes: Friends to Lovers, Close proximity, he falls first, opposites attract, desi and Bollywood vibes.
Spice:🌶️🌶️

Sona is the perfect, strong, witty FMC who can speak politics and I love that from her. Mihir (MY MAN) is just an enigma and cutthroat businessman.
Sona and Mihir have perfect representation if opposites attract. From the moment they met tension and attraction are in the air. Their banter is top-notch, which makes the book so fun, flirty, and an exciting read.

In desi romance, families play an equal and important role in any relationship. The bond between Sona and her parents, how supportive they are of her, and how comfortable she is with them speaks volumes. The same can be said with Mihir even though it has its ups and downs, it is beautiful nonetheless.

I felt bad for Sona in the last half of the book and the way Mihir handled things that happened, but the angst and love made up for that.

The book also delves into the emotional complexities of the characters, exploring their fears, hopes, and insecurities. The author perfectly blended them into the book.

Do you ever get a bubbly feeling while reading a book? The bubbles are like the ones after a fresh champagne has been poured. It’s fizzy and the bubbles dancing in the glass. Well I got that feeling, and honestly, it’s the best feeling while reading a book.

Compared to Varsha’s first novel, The Rules of Playing With Fire had such better flow. You can see the growth in the story execution and structure. The pacing was well done and it grew with every chapter.

Mihir and Sona are endearing, fiery and characters that represent a new age. Plus the reveals in the later half of the book open, no spoilers but I totally didn’t see it coming! Knowing that the novel has a Bollywood connection to the blockbuster hit Hum Aapke Hain Koun just was icing on the chocolate cake. Is it fair to ask for more?

Congratulations Varsha, I can’t wait for future books. Definitely picked up on the hints. 😉

Thank you Swipe the Book PR for providing an ARC.

2.5 rounded up to 3

I am forever on the look out for South Asian/Indian centric stories, told from an Indian perspective without the dreaded Eurocentric storytelling or whitewashing. Which as you know might as well be a unicorn with how difficult it is to find. Even when the authors themselves are Indian, very few find the perfect balance of celebrating Indian culture while not shying away from talking about its numerous problems. This book did a lot when it came to the latter but not much with the former.

This is first time author for me and I really liked the premise of the book. The first 20% of the book I was convinced I had found my second Nalini Singh (the only unicorn I've found), eventhough the writing was lacking. But then the story went through all of its twists and turns and I was sorely disappointed.
First, the writing is a step up from your run of the mill wattpad stories. The difference between those and this book, is a better command of the english language and the use of a dictionary and a thesaurus. The chemistry between the MCs was so badly written that it might as well not be there. If you get past the writing and use your imagination to fill in the blanks, they have great chemistry. But if you rely on the author's writing prowess, there is nothing to be found, not the chemistry between the MCs, the found family aspect of the FMC and MMC's friend groups and the unique portrayal of Indian parents. Which isn't unique but I am so used to seeing the caricature-ish portrayals of Indian parents that this looked unique. And the author DEFINITELY needs to write 'fade to black' scenes. Spice is definitely not her strength and the story would have been a far better read without those badly written scenes included - which again - very wattpad!

Second, the story arc very much gave wattpad feels. There was barely any buildup for any of the climactic scenes. Especially the major one regarding the MMC. There were no hints about him, his relationship with his parents, how they relate to him... nothing. And then suddenly this huge info is dropped on your head out of nowhere. And the story is suddenly going in a different direction and that brings me to

Third, So. Much. Lecturing! Don't get me wrong, I am glad for all the issues talked about in this book but it would have been far more digestible if it was integrated into the story a bit more seamlessly. In its current state, its jarring and takes you out of the story.

All in all 1.5 stars for the story (which got rounded up to 2) and the extra star because after a really long time I actually finished the book. Despite all the complaints listed above, the storytelling wasn't so horrible that I was forced to DNF and throw the book out the window.

I would start this by saying that every bollywood fan needs to read this. The book is a perfect amalgamation of masala, drama, emotions, banter and spice.

Mihir and Sona were absolutely not what I was expecting. I have lost count of the moments I was smiling ear to ear because of their banter. Tbh, I didn't really expect to like Mihir because of that one line in the first chapter - “He is an alpha like me”. It's a personal ick, the word alpha suits better to Fantasy books for me. But yes, Mihir did grow on me. I love that the author established his character enough with his mannerism and personality that he didn't need to use the word alpha again.

Sona was everything - I am personally a huge fan of FMCs talking feminist politics. The conversations around her work were very interesting. I loved the detailed insights and I can't wait to study more about those topics myself. Also, I loved that Sona was shy in ways and sassy in others. She gave Mihir back equally, sometimes more. Her love for friends and family was an added bonus.

Mihir and Sona's relationship happened so organically that I fell in love with them the way they fell for each other. It was beautiful to me to see them treat each other with so much respect and love since the first day. I loved their vulnerable moments so much.

Both their families were the cherry on the cake, along with Tara and Sameer ( I can't wait to go read their book now). I am also fishing for Grant's book now so there is that :p

All in all, it was a worth it experience. I am glad i could read the ARC for this book - thank you author and swipe PR.

Sona was off-limits. Sameer had warned Mihir.
But we are humans afterall, we always want what we can't have.
Both Sona and Mihir cannot deny their attraction towards each other. Fooling around once or twice wasn't enough for Mihir. Sona have had her fair share of broken heart, so she wasn't looking for anything serious which is fine for Mihir until they can't stand the distance.
Mihir was ready to take the next step, until he found out his parents kept a secret from him which led to him questioning his relationship with his parents and eventually pushing Sona away thus proving what she always feared!

This book is what I wish to see in Indian movies more😉🤭 The setup was superb, the story, the connections, the friendship in this book - everything is top notch.
Also, both Sona and Mihir have the sweetest parents! The way Mihir's mom shows her love and affection towards Sona is what we all crave from our partner's moms. 🤭🤌🏻

This is my request to you, especially Indian bookstagrammers to please give this book a read. You will love it for sure!

I am so glad that I got the ARC of this book and damn this is so worth reading... Like it has everything drama, romance, spice. The chemistry between the mihir and sona is hot and Mihir has everything that a woman can ask for. He is smart, over achiever, sexy.
And Sona well she is a brilliant mind with a sassy tongue and lot of curves. Just the partner that mihir needs...
This book is so worth reading the bonds between the families and then their bond with their friends is so beautiful and how the story tackles some issues that women face about their body and during marriage... There is some family drama which changes the course of the story but it's worth reading and the author has done a beautiful job in writing the plot and also every single character...

I absolutely adored this book! I loved the first book in the series, The Art of Taking Second Chances, and was so excited to hear that the author had written book 2. It did not disappoint.

I enjoyed Mihir and Sona’s non-traditional relationship arc. Both have been burned before, but can’t seem to stay away from each other. Like Tara and Sameer, Sona and Mihir felt like real people with multifaceted personalities. They don’t always make the best decisions, but it’s understandable for their characters why they make the choices that they do. Sona is an absolute queen and I was rooting for her and Mihir to have their HEA.

Varsha Chitnis always injects a healthy dose of Indian culture, language, and food into her books, and I always appreciate learning more about various cultures. I’m looking forward to book 3!

My current obsession: The Rules of Playing With Fire. When I started reading the book, I had not expected the rollercoaster ride of emotions I would be experiencing. The Main Characters- Mihir and Sona- grew up in similar but also hugely different worlds and how they come together is how the 'opposites attract' trope comes into play and how!

The witty, intelligent and snarky back and forth between Sona and Mihir are enlightening as well as laugh-out-loud. The curious reader will definitely be able to take some good cues to include in their day-to-day love life. Their bond and camaraderie truly made me fall in love with them and their love story.

Varsha ji, with great panache, has dealt with some very important social and controversial topics in a highly misogynistic and patriarchal world. I could relate to Sona and her character more than I could ever explain in words. She is also someone I aspire to be like, in the contrasts between her nature and mine.

"There is nothing shallow about the need to feel loved and wanted. It is a real, primal, human emotion." The descriptive, spicy encounters are not for the faint hearted. This book is definitely meant for adult audiences!

In totality, this book will move you, will make you smile and laugh, will make you think and probably change the way you feel towards certain issues. And all for the best, in the most positive way.

"They say the harder you love, the more you hurt." But I do know that the more I read this book, the further I will fall in love with Mihir, Sona, their love story, their upbringing, their conversations, their loving families, their friends who are their chosen family, the Indian traditions and rituals described in the book.

4.5/5 stars rounded up
3/5 spice

- he falls first AND hard
- banter galore
- surprise / unexpected plot
- tight knit friend group
- wonderful (and loving parents)

The Rules were so fire - I loved guessing what was going to happen based on them. Mihir was a surprising cutie. Didn't expect him to be quite as endearing given how he was described initially. I mean when he travels all the way to another country to see her conference and only wanted to see her and hear her speak and was content with just that, he wins major brownie points for taking consent with boundary setting very seriously. Thankfully Sona wasn't content with just that lol. Not to mention how adorable he is with her parents - eeek their interactions had me giggling.

Loved all their banter and how they really matched each other so well in being understanding and supportive of one another. Very fiercely and passionately loving as they are a bit explosive with their anger. They were as sweet as they were spicy - that mirror scene had my face all warm. *fanning my face dramatically*

The unexpected plot later on threw me off for a moment, felt a bit out of place. But overall really loved this story and the storytelling was even better than the debut. Sona was as fierce and amazing as she was flawed and I loved her well-rounded character. Can't wait to read more of Varsha's future books!! I picked up on a few hints of what may come next and I'm thrilled!

Grateful for this ARC!

You know there are certain authors who write more than romance in their book and this was one such book for me. The Rules of Playing with Fire is book #2 and revolves around the lives of Tara's friend Sona & Sameer's friend Mihir.

This story was so refreshing. Both the MCs could not be poles apart but that is what brought the attract between the two. I enjoyed how they both kept each other on their toes and were mature enough to agree when they were long.

I vibed with all the desi elements and the fact that Varsha created such a beautiful set of parents because I could see my parents story up there. I also related to Sona's breakup because that is something I went through as well.

This is a perfect book for readers who want more from their stories as this book not only gives you toe curling romance but also facts and lessons on topics that you might not have thought to dwell on.

This was a refreshing story with amazing characters. There are many things I loved about this book — their banter, the Desi elements, friends who were like family, feminist political talks, and the profound mil-dil friendship are the top ones.
More than just a contemporary romance, this was a thought-provoking story that discussed many social justice issues that are still happening around us.
So, if you are looking for an inspiring & intriguing romance, this might just be the one for you.

Reading this book was the best use of my time. The easy flow with which things happened, things turned over and things fell into place was mindblowing. It kept me hooked from the first page. It was initially more character-oriented but later it became more plot-oriented which was a very balanced mix.

Mihir, the MMC, is neither grumpy nor morally grey and that's such a refreshing break from the men who act like entitled a-holes in books all the time. His professional personality has been shown ruthless but that's only because he is supposed to make hard decisions. My heart melted when I saw how well-mannered he was with his family. Since his first meeting with Sona, he has been an absolute gentleman (unless they are in bed of course). The surprise visits, the cute moments, and him cooking…!! My instant new book boyfriend.

Sona. Oh, Sona. Am I supposed to like a fictional character so much? She is the kind of woman who is OPINIONATED and portrays her feminist side in front of the crowd without any fear. I loved that she actually had a few words to say rather than just a sassy remark! She has a story to tell but the way she carries herself despite her past is admirable. Such characters motivate me to fall in love with myself, something I forget to do at times but I’m grateful for the reminder Sona gave me.

The story has so many characters, families on both sides, side characters and their families, yet I had absolutely no difficulty remembering each one after meeting them. Perhaps, it's because I'm Indian or it could just be how interesting the descriptions of each character are. And not just that, Indian people and parents are quite hospitable the essence of which was captured beautifully. Every interaction of Sona’s and Mihir’s family felt like a warm hug. The author thought this through and it shows.

Sona was mutely bashed for being opinionated. A thing about reading Indian romances is that sometimes I relate to them a little too much. The author nailed it! And I mean perfectly nailed it!! The reactions of the crowd, Sona's speech, and her ignorance of the reactions- becoming Sona is what we need to do if we want to survive in our backward society.

!!SPOILER ALERT!!

The text below contains major spoilers so if you haven’t finished the book yet, then please refrain from reading further.

Adopted trope is a no-no for me but here, going by the feminist theme of the book, this trope made a lot of sense. What came next was even better. Mihir was not once ashamed of being a prostitute’s son. His parents were not ashamed of it. They did not try to stop him or guilt-trip him into chickening out when he decided to find Sharda.

Sharda herself was a very well-written character. Nothing was out of place- her words, her tone, her speech, her thought process; such a sensitive character is usually difficult to write and requires background research but the author nailed it. Sona’s role in all this was momentous.

This book made me sit back and think about a few things which, in my opinion, is a huge compliment for the author.

ARC review:
As a Desi girl, I was so excited to read this book as an ARC and honestly, it did not disappoint. Sona Thomas and Mihir Seth have occupied a space in my mind and heart since the first page itself. The romance was romance-ing, the banter was banter-ing and the spice was spicy. While reading the book, I was constantly reminded of "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun?" and seeing that line referenced in the book made me kick my feet in the air and squeak with joy.
The best part about the book though are the characters, be it the MCs or the side characters. The MCs are adorable and relatable, but I loved the parents more. Both Mihir and Sona's parents are amazing people, especially Mihir's. Their acceptance of Sona from the first moment they met her, and his mother being defensive for her against her own son and his shenanigans made me wish for a future MIL like her.
Both Mihir and Sona have a past, but while their pasts did create a bit of hindrance, they both worked through it to get their HEA. And while I love and adore Mihir Seth, I think I love Sona Thomas more. I relate to her, in the way that every Desi girl might relate to her. As someone who has grown up with the supposed beauty standards imposed on me, I love how self-confident Sona is in her own skin. And she doesn't gatekeep this confidence to herself. She's a girls' girl and she spreads this self-love to others as well. I hope to one day he as confident as her in myself and maybe find a Mihir Seth for myself as well.
Sona is a strong feminist and is opinionated, sassy and mature. She is someone who doesn't hesitate to speak her mind. And Mihir fell hard for her. It was love at first sight for both of them. And I LOVE the fact that, unlike some books and movies, Sona did not have to change anything about herself to capture his heart. Mihir loves her for who she is, and it was adorable watching him hype her up and be her biggest fan. And while Sona did initially hesitate to trust him with her heart because of her own experiences in the past, Mihir's patience and understanding support of her was endearing. And when his own past reared it's head and put cracks in their relationship for a while, Sona was a a rock that he could lean on for support and guidance.
The book also tackles prejudices and societal stereotypes that need to be questioned. The book will make you think, and as a student of English Lit, my mind was soaking up on all the things that made me think, especially the issues of loss of identity/identity crisis and Sona's research deserve to be explored more in depth.
If you love a good desi romance with a Curvy FMC who is sassy and mature, who is a loved and adored by the MMC, with a supportive family and friends, and a romance that takes place in the backdrop of a desi wedding, then this book is for you. Trust me, this book is so good and I honestly cannot stop reading it, because every time I do, I find new things that make me fall in love with it again and again.

The Rules of Playing with Fire is an engaging contemporary romance that blends the complexities of love, ambition, and cultural expectations. Set in the vibrant backdrop of Dallas, the story follows Mihir and Sona as they navigate the intricacies of their personal and professional lives while dealing with family dynamics and societal pressures.

Chitnis excels in creating well-rounded characters who are both relatable and memorable. Mihir, a successful and confident man, is compelling in his role as a financial consultant with a no-nonsense approach to business. Sona, on the other hand, is a fiercely intelligent woman with a sharp wit and a passion for her work in gender studies. Their chemistry is palpable, and their interactions are laced with a mix of humor, tension, and tenderness.

One of the standout aspects of this novel is Chitnis's ability to address serious social issues, such as colorism, body image, and the challenges of being a woman in male-dominated spaces, all while keeping the romance central to the plot. The book also explores the cultural expectations placed on individuals, particularly in the South Asian community, and how these impact relationships and self-perception.

The pacing of the story is well-balanced, with the narrative unfolding through alternating perspectives of Mihir and Sona, allowing readers to delve deep into their thoughts and emotions. The dialogue is sharp and often witty, adding to the overall enjoyment of the book. The supporting characters, particularly Tara and Sameer, provide additional depth and warmth to the story, making the world Chitnis creates feel rich and full of life.

The Rules of Playing with Fire is more than just a romance; it is a thoughtful exploration of identity, belonging, and the courage to defy expectations in pursuit of personal happiness. Varsha Chitnis has crafted a novel that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, making it a must-read for fans of contemporary romance with a strong cultural and social narrative.

A perfect nazar-utaru book!

🔥 I wonder why didn't I read Varsha Ji's books before. The satisfaction that I felt after reading the words 'THE END' is something I can't express in words. I literally squealed and jumped and cried at the HEA. I don't think it could be any better. It's been a while I read something that made me so happy that I felt like every second I've spent on reading the book was worth it like literally "WORTH IT."

🔥 The story is about Sona Thomas who's had 2 heartbreaking relationships and now doesn't want any. But she finds herself leaning towards her best friend's friend, Mihir who's a player and doesn't do relationships. She matches him wit for wit and has him rethinking his long-held stance on love and commitment, until a shocking revelation threatens to upend his dreams.

🔥 His search for the truth eventually brings him to Sona’s doorstep with a question he dreads: will she allow him back in her life? What will happen when the sparkle in them turns into fire? Will Mihir end up hurting Sona? Read the book to find out and I bet you won't regret reading it.

🔥 The book is a nice desi romance with the wedding shenanigans and the cute and sassy banter between our leads Mihir and Sona. I loved Sona soooooo much. She's the exact woman I wish to become. I'm so in love with her character ❤️ And Mihir, Yes he did a few mistakes, but the way he flirts with her took my heart away. 🫠

🔥 Reading the book was a whole roller coaster ride which included tears, drama, spice, great female friendship (the ones I so adore in books), supportive family and a perfect happily ever after. I'm sure I might have missed a few things because I just can't wrap my head around it and I'm already feeling sad that the world of Mihir and Sona is over 🥹 But nevermind they'll be living in my heart forever.

🔥 I recommend this book to everyone who's into reading rom-coms and love desi romance. A beginner friendly book and a great 5 star read 🤌🏻

The Rules of Playing with Fire by Varsha Chitnis is the first contemporary romance I read, which has Indian leads. This book has made me so happy not only because of the spot-on portrayal of the desi characters but also because of the opposites-attract trope done right.

There is instant attraction between Sona and Mihir, a trope which I don’t like. However, as I flipped through the pages, I was convinced this story was worth reading.

The chemistry between the leads didn’t feel forced at all because in addition to the spicy scenes, the author included plenty of scenes where they broke down their walls and got to know each other.

What I liked best was Sona is an intelligent, opinionated woman who challenges Mihir wit by wit, and Mihir, instead of taking offense as many men would do, finds it attractive. He appreciates her honesty and intelligence.

"Yes, she thought she was playing with fire, but I wanted her to recognize that this fire was committed to nurturing her, not burning her down to ashes."

I loved how caring and protective Mihir is towards Sona. He gives her the space to come to the realization herself that she loves him.

Moreover, I loved the author’s attention to detail. For instance, all throughout the book, the author precedes the chapters with rules about fire that are of cautious nature. However, the last few chapters are preceded with the rule of acknowledging the importance of fire, thus signaling that a happily-ever-after is close enough.

Also, kudos to the author for shedding light on the spaces reserved for women in the public sphere through Sona’s research work. I had faced exactly the same situation that Sona narrated to her audience at a wedding. Anecdotes like these made this book special for me because the author truly integrated an Indian woman's experience into the story.

The author’s breezy style further added to the charm of this book.

To conclude, I loved this story and highly recommend it to romance lovers.

This book has everything a desi romance novel needs and more.It was such a beautiful read🥺❤️

I was hooked from the start. It is so well written!!
I was blushing and laughing the whole time. The banter is amazing(I live for some good banter)the witty and snarky back and forth was so entertaining.Their first interaction was beautiful. I fell in love with Mihir and Sona. It was so beautiful watching two people who never wanted anything serious but got that happily ever after with each other and they deserved it after going through so much🥺

Mihir and Sona are so well written characters, they have depth, past traumas and secrets but how they cope up with it and help each other is a such a lovely journey to go through.

Can we talk about the spice?😮‍💨 SPICE was knockout. The mirror scene…..ufff🤌🏼 Love how Mihir is crazy for that sexy brain and mouth of Sona and doesn’t feel inferior by that.

The friends like family vibes was wholesome, the social issues this book talked about was something to relate to. Also a special shoutout to Mihir’s parents. They really are the best and I cried for them maybe once or twice. I love how lovely Sona’s parents were and how they incorporated that plan at last.

It was everything, full of wedding shenanigans, family drama, society issues , a lot of fun and Love.
Also the “Hum apke hain kaun?” Bollywood Vibes really made this a total package.

This book is definitely going to make you feel so many emotions and probably make you re-think about some society issues and your take on them.

If you love desi representation in Romance(all the Indian culture references with some modern intake) then you should go for this and if you haven’t tried any desi-romance, then you should definitely start with this one.

Thank you so much @varshachitnis for writing this book and @swipethebook.pr for giving us the opportunity to early read it❤️❤️

How would it be if we lived only in our insecurities and never gave the genuine people a chance?

Sona Thomas is twice burnt now too careful to venture her heart out there. A Professor with PHD, strong opinions and ideas, smart yet hardworking; Sona treads carefully especially when it’s matter of hearts. She’s done being a victim of the lowly, non-existent backbone of the boys of her past. With her strong roots back in India, she’s determined to focus on her work in NYC and its related research.

She reaches Dallas to celebrate the final betrothal of her best friend/soul sister Tara with Sameer. Seeing how they found each other again, makes her heart warm for her friend but also brings forth the longing of belonging to someone that way.

In swoops-tall, bearded, dark onyx eyed-Mihir Seth. Mihir is ruthless and confident. He’s always had dalliances on the side, moving on from one to the other. But, Sona’s charm, her persona, her intelligence and her tact of always surprising him pleasantly conquers him through and through. Mihir is clear; Mihir is confident. He realises early on that Sona is IT for him. He spends all his available time pursuing her and giving her the space she needs to voice out the feelings he knows she has for him. He takes the time to learn Sona’s past and loves her more for her resilience and power.

But will the dawning realisation of Sona’s feelings be enough for them to live happily forever or is there a darker truth awaiting Mihir which can shake the foundation of his self to bring crashing down the life as they know it?

Chitnis’s novel stands out in the portrayal of women’s relationships; especially the bond between Mihir’s mother and Sona, two MP women different age but bonded through mutual love, respect and vis-a-vis discourse of ideas. The calmness of Mihir’s persona is the perfect salve to Sona’s fight-or-flight nature. He forces her to think and re-think what she wants in life. Despite knowing what’s best for her, Mihir never imposes yet, wins Sona over and over again.

Varsha Chitnis, in this second novel, in the Dallas Connection Series, raises the mirror to those relationships who fail to see an end due to the shadows of their pasts. She shows that you need to be a calming front, a paddling board for your partner when you see they are struggling. Because it’s through chartering these murky waters of the past together, is what will matter in the end to make you choose one another every time.

Varsha Chitnis's The Rules of Playing with Fire is a captivating and emotionally charged novel that explores the complexities of identity, desire, and the cost of freedom. Set against the vibrant backdrops of contemporary India and Dallas, the story delves into the lives of characters who are caught in the intersection of tradition and modernity, wrestling with their innermost desires and societal expectations.

Chitnis's writing is both evocative and introspective, drawing readers into Sona and Mihir's world with rich descriptions and nuanced character development. The narrative is layered with themes of personal rebellion, the search for meaning, and the struggle to break free from societal constraints. The author's portrayal of Mumbai is particularly noteworthy, capturing the city's pulse and the dichotomy between its old-world charm and modern vibrancy.

What makes The Rules of Playing with Fire stand out is its unflinching exploration of the often-taboo subject of female desire. Chitnis handles this with sensitivity and depth, allowing Sona's journey to unfold in a way that feels both authentic and relatable. The novel does not shy away from the complexities of marriage and the difficult choices that come with pursuing one's passions, making it a thought-provoking read.

Overall, *The Rules of Playing with Fire* is a beautifully written and emotionally resonant novel that will appeal to readers who enjoy introspective stories about self-discovery and the human condition. Varsha Chitnis has crafted a compelling tale that lingers in the mind long after the final page is turned, making it a worthy addition to contemporary Indian literature.

This book is a delightful read that kept me hooked from start to finish. Even though I hadn’t read the first book in the Dallas Connection Series, this one made me want to check it out as soon as I can.

The story centers on Sona Thomas, a smart and independent professor who’s been hurt in the past and is wary of new relationships. I really admired her strength and how she slowly starts to open up to love again. Her journey felt very real and relatable.

Mihir Seth, on the other hand, is charming and confident, but not in a way that feels cliché. At first, he’s a bit of a player, but as he gets to know Sona, his feelings become genuine and sincere. Watching him fall for her and respect her boundaries was refreshing.

The chemistry between Mihir and Sona is palpable, and their relationship develops in a way that feels both natural and heartfelt. The book does a great job of balancing romance with deeper themes, like dealing with past issues and personal growth.

One of the highlights for me was the way Chitnis developed the secondary characters. The bond between Mihir’s mother and Sona added an extra layer to the story and showed how important family and support are in a relationship.

The author also touches on some important social issues in a way that feels integrated into the story rather than forced. This added depth without taking away from the romance.

Overall, it is a great read that left me feeling warm and satisfied. I’m excited to read the first book in the series and see where it all started. If you’re looking for a heartfelt and engaging romance, this book is definitely worth picking up.

What was this? This book starts out as a sweet love story featuring mature characters who talk about their feelings, have great banter and seem fairly drama free....then WHAM...we are hit at around the 65 percent mark with a big reveal that the MMCs parents are not his birth parents. Suddenly he turns into a big whiny all about me asshole and breaks up with the FMC for reasons I guess, when he had literally asked Sona to marry him weeks earlier. And he did it by ghosting her!!! And did it knowing how traumatized she had been by two previous relationships. But to hell with her right, because his life is hard and sad. Are you kidding me? Up to this point the MMC had been all about acting like adults and then he pulls this crap. Treats his adoptive parents who have done nothing but love him like dirt, ignores the FMC and blocks her on his phone, same for his friends. He finally starts to accept he is wrong and instead of groveling to everyone, he uses his big reveal to gain sympathy from his friends who almost immediately forgive him. Then he bullies his way into the FMCs life by showing up at her parent's home in India. And instead of her enjoying time healing from what he did to her and spending time with her parents, Sona spends good chunk of it tracking down his birth parents. Then once that was resolved, I thought for sure she would be strong and make him work for her forgiveness. Nope. Went running back to him yelling how much she missed and wanted him. Zero grovel. We get a quick wrap up with a big proposal scene and then the end. This is up there in the top books that have pissed me off. I wish I could get back the day I spent reading this.

Sona Thomas
Mihir Seth
#2 The Dallas Connection Series

Sona and Thomas met during the wedding of their friends Tara And Sameer. The physical attraction was instant between the two but because of Sona's past and Mihir's playboy image they both hesitates to make a move.

When after the constant back and forth they finally make a move the story takes a twist which gets them back to the square one.

I loved the book... It should be an understatement but yes, I LOVED THE BOOK.

The way Varsha ma'am has written the characters with so much depth and kept in mind every aspect of their personality is phenomenal. And the deep research done for the topics is mind blowing.

I loved how the deep and sensitive issues of the society like body shaming, parent-child relationship, inter cast marriages, sex worker' issues, issues surrounding women's rights etc are handled in the book.

The steam and spice in the book is next level and the connection between the characters is strong and full of love and care.

If you love a book with a good plot, social issues dealt in a beautiful way with some family drama and topped with some really good spicy scenes then this book should be your must read.

P. S. I have been thinking about how to write this review that it sounds convincing enough for you all to pick, so if you find this review less appealing just understand that this is because I'm confused on how to present it to you in the best way and give this book a shot it deserves. 🙈😂

Oh. My. Gosh. Mihir and Sona's story is like a tidal wave of emotions that swept me off my feet and left me breathless! I'm talking laugh-out-loud moments that snorted my coffee out my nose, tear-jerking scenes that left me sobbing like a baby, and heart-skipping-a-beat romance that made me weak in the knees.

This book is my go-to therapy session, my happy place. I devoured every word, every sentence, every chapter like a starving bookworm. I fell head over heels for Mihir's charming wit, his swoon-worthy smile, and his heart of gold. And Sona? She's my spirit animal - fierce, fearless, and unapologetically herself.

Their journey is like a masterclass in emotions - it's raw, it's real, it's relatable. It's like looking into a mirror, seeing my own fears, hopes, and dreams staring back at me. I cheered when they triumphed, I cried when they struggled, and I screamed (again, internally - adulting is hard, okay?) when they faced heart-wrenching setbacks.

Mihir and Sona's love story is a work of art, a masterpiece that will stay with me forever. It's a reminder that love is messy, beautiful, and worth fighting for. It's a testament to the human spirit - our capacity to love, to lose, and to keep getting back up again.

So, what are you waiting for? Dive in, get ready to feel all the feels, and thank me later! But warning: once you start, you won't be able to put it down. And when you finish, you'll be left wanting more. More Mihir, more Sona, more of their love story that will stay with you forever.

@mishbookish posts encouraged me to buy this book and I would have missed a lot haven't read this!! @varshachitnis you have created an absolute perfection!! I think we should give an award to Mihir for best grovelling of the year. Mihir and Sona were the best in every way possible

Mihir was cutthroat business man who went through girlfriends dresses- different every month until he met the one....Sona the beautiful woman with charming eyes and so much sass that drawn him to her.

Sona was a professor and was a lovely woman. She is a strong carrer driven woman who wants to achieve great things in life. After too many failed toxic relationships, her heart is fragile. When she met her bestfriend's fiance's bestfriend , she was instantly drawn to him.

They had flirty banters and stolen glances and it should stop there.....right? From what she have learnt at past - good face doesn't mean good heart and she sure as hell doesn't want to go there again. But will she play with fire?? Or fire will burn her heart?

What if the one person you swore to stay away from… is the only one who truly sees you?
Can you risk getting burned again—or live the rest of your life in the cold?

The Rules of Playing with Fire by Varsha Chitnis is the second book in The Dallas Connection Series, and it brings exactly what the title promises—fire, passion, and emotional heat.

This was such an enjoyable read! Beautifully done in terms of storytelling, character arcs, and the kind of slow-simmering drama that keeps you turning pages.

Here’s what I loved:
✔️ Both leads were well-crafted, with emotional depth and layered internal struggles that felt authentic.
✔️ The plot—especially the storyline around the male lead’s identity—was handled with nuance and intensity.
✔️ The chemistry? Electric. Scorching. The tension between them sizzled off the page.
✔️ The supporting cast was absolute perfection—a lovable, dynamic bunch that added color and charm.
✔️ And yes… the spice. Done right. Very right.

What didn’t quite work for me:
While the individual characters were compelling, the romantic arc felt slightly rushed. The instant connection between them didn’t fully align with their otherwise complex personalities. I wished for a bit more buildup—a stronger emotional bridge between their initial spark and full-blown relationship.

That said, it’s a minor flaw in an otherwise fiery, heartfelt, and gripping romance. I’m definitely diving into the rest of this series—because if this is what book two brings, I can’t wait to see what’s next!
