Locust
Legend, lover…liar, Locust doesn’t care what he has to do to get the job done, and when he’s ordered to get close to the sister of a traitor, he rides in, ready to seduce and deceive. What he doesn’t count on is falling hard and fast for sweet Nadia.
But when Locust’s treachery is discovered and his plans crumble, he realizes that blindly following orders lost him everything he ever wanted. Determined to win back the woman he loves, he will once again do whatever it takes to get the job done—even a little light stalking.
Treachery is book two in the Unchained Hearts series, and features a bad boy biker and a plus-sized lottery winner. This series is MC adjacent, which means it has all the fun without the felonies. Sex, leather, and love—low angst but still plenty of delicious drama. As with all Eve Black books, there’s no cheating or cliffhangers.
Eve Black is the sexy contemporary romance-loving alter-ego of a sweet historical romance author...who also writes dark, sexy medieval romance under another name. Eve is one of several personalities in one crazy package. When Eve isn't writing books, she is editing other people's books, freelance writing marketing content, or wrangling her children. For fun, Eve loves to read (obviously) sexy contemporary and historical romance books, binge-watch old Supernatural, Burn Notice, Leverage, and Lucifer episodes on Netflix, and play mind-numbing games on her tablet.
Eve lives in an untidy house on a little over an acre in rural Northeast Pennsylvania with her husband of 17 years and their four children, three cats, and one chicken.
The gut punch moment of the overheard conversation that revealed the H's betrayal was great but it’s such weak writing to put the h into some kind of danger so that the H has a way back into her life instead of him actually working to earn her forgiveness.
And then, when the h wouldn’t immediately fall into line and forgive him, the H became furious, locked her in her bedroom said that he was going to spank her a$$ “for being such a brat”.
I'm out. DNF

The plot was interesting, it started right with a punch in the gut but then kind of fell downwards. I expected something more. More grovel from the hero, more resistance from the heroine, something was lacking.
Deciding not to rate this. It's definitely a me thing as I know many who like this series so far. This series seems to pay too much attention on woman's looks. Specifically curvy women. But they're picked on and spoken badly of. h overhears H talking about how fat and gross she is. She's basically a club job to get close to her step brother who owes them money. If the whole weight thing was left out I would have liked it more. The book prior was the same. Big girl not feeling good enough for her hot AF biker and getting picked on by the mean girls. No judgement. Just isn't my thing. Better luck next time
It’s annoying when authors make their fmc’s less than. I’ve decided the BBW trope just doesn’t work for me. Most of the time authors make them less than and make sure to drive that point home through tedious inner monologues. I don’t enjoy books where I’m constantly told how fat and mediocre the fmc is while telling me constantly how hot and perfect the MMC’s body is. Ffs please stop. Anyways the H and h have been in a relationship for 5 months when she overhears him talking about their sexcapades with a club brother. He says he has to get drunk and take viagara to fk her and after he finds out if she has money that her brother stole he will take an acid bath to get her skank off of him and come fck a club whore—- oh but he didn’t really mean it. Then why did he say something that harsh. It was ott for someone who says he’s in love and was just trying to get the club brother off his back. Anyway that angst was the highlight. Everything else was boring afterwards.
This book revolves around something that was said that wasn’t even truthful and it got boring quick.
She is a $3 million casino winner whose stepbrother owes money to the MC that the H is in. He starts a relationship with her to gain access but then falls for her eventually. But one morning after sex, he is talking to another MC dude at the club and H tells him that she’s just a body to eff and other horrible things. He doesn’t mean any of it but she overhears and leaves. He spends the rest of the book making amends and turns into a pussy.
So much inner dialogue from the h how she shouldn’t trust him but look at him now wearing a Lacoste shirt at a restaurant and buying her cheap Chinese takeout to take care of her *eye roll inserton*
Anyway…….i’m not that impressed, especially with the typos like “she felt a smile from her hips” instead of writing LIPS. Jaysus crust.

What I loved: I liked how Nadia(h) didn’t forgive Locust/James(H) right away. I also liked that her brother is getting the help that he needs. Lastly, I loved how James was willing to give up the club for her. Him showing her that she is more important than the club helped me forgive him :)
What I didn’t like: Honesty, I needed a better excuse as to why Locust said those cruel things about Nadia. I understood the job part and why he said yes to doing it but him saying what he did was just horrible of him.
***Major Spoilers/ Details/Triggers: h overhears the H talking badly about her. H and h have been seeing each other for about five months. After a night staying at the club, the h comes downstairs to find the H and overhears him talking badly about her. She hears him telling one of his club brother that she is just a job and as soon as they find her stepbrother he will be done with her. h’s stepbrother stole money from the club and they believe she might have some of the money. H is called away to do a job and when he gets back he finds the h at the club letting them know she doesn’t know where her stepbrother is and to leave her alone. H is order to stay away from her but the H knows the h is his one. The rest of the book is the H doing everything he can to get the h back and making sure she knows how much he loves her. HEA with a beautiful grand gesture and bread crumbs for the next book.
Final thoughts: I like the “overheard” trope books and this one did not disappoint even if I didn’t like his excuse. I really can’t wait to read Emily and Frost’s book.

This book has made it to my 5 top reads of 2004. Eve Back can spin a yarn and this book is proof of that, I read the whole thing in on sitting. The overheard betryal is a total gut punch,I actually had to put my kindle down for a hot minute to regroup, Locust had me looking for my damn bug spray I was so annoyed. Nadia is a sweet and totally relatable herione who knows how to stand her ground. The angst does not let up and you are left sitting on the edge of your seat wondering where Eve Black is leading us.
If you are agaist MC books, you should know that Eve classifies these books as MC adjacent, all the fun with out the felonies. While the boys are in an MC it is not the focus if the books. This is very much a betryal and grovel romance and there is no cheating.
While you can read this as a stand along why would you want to the first book is amazing and this will be a five book series. There are returning characters and if you pay attention there are hints for the upcoming books.
My recommendation is to add this book to your wish list and start reading Eve Black's cataloge now.
Angst galore! Loved it, Nadia is so sweet but not stupid, Locust is a loyal brother who takes it too far, I love angst and a main character who was hit with the ‘Brothers first,’ stupid stick. The other characters were great and I cannot wait for Frost and Emily’s book! Well worth a read, thank you Eve Black for the arc.
I was liking this a bit better than book one up until the 28% mark when the MMC started playing word games with his orders from his prez. The order being absurd to begin with and the MMC trying like a child to get around it. SMH.
FINAL UPDATE
The story ends at 98%. Then it’s a sneak peek at the third book Gluttony which I have like a 1% desire to read.
Anyway, this was better than book one but not by much. A lot of unnecessary angst about being fat from the FMC and a whole lot of not knowing himself from the MMC. Like his history of being a junkie from a bad home and watching his friend die because of it left him vulnerable to the Prez Frost ordering him to do a douche thing to the FMC. Personally, I felt like why would anyone you respect ask you to do something like that without you calling them on it but you do it anyway??
Lastly, anyone who would use your loyalty for saving their life when you were basically a mixed up child as a weapon against you is NOT someone you should follow anyway. I couldn’t figure Frost out. He is literally the only character I want to read about from book one.
This book only barely held my attention. I was only reading this series in order to get to Frost’s book because I wasn’t sure how interconnected this author writes her stories. Per my FB book group I can read Frost’s story as a standalone as nothing really happens between him and the OW on page or off so I’m just going to skip ahead to his book as this series so far is very boring. I don’t know why this author describes herself as a smut writer when there is barely any smut in these books. Angst yes, not much drama, some decent enough romance, very little hard conversations. Like I never felt that this MMC’s overheard conversation in the beginning was ever really addressed properly. He just explains it away a shit talking.
Like sir! No! You don’t shit talk like that about the love of your life. To anyone.
But BBS? A ton of BBS. These entire books have had one sole source of connection. BBS. The complete dynamic is pushed along by nothing more than BBS. Not a good premise for any real romance book.
Anyway this book was just okay. I probably will never read it again and that’s my ONLY identifier of a good book. I mean I literally barely remember what I read. Smh. Good luck.
I loved the storyline. Great new take on a mc lite story. But the Grammar mistakes are off the charts in this book. I'm not going to report it and I won't know how to report it to the author directly.... But readers need to know that it couldn't have been proofread before posting - there's that many writing words that it will take you out of an otherwise excellent storyline. It took my 4 star reading to a 2.5 star rounded down to a 2 star reading. As there were some issues with book 1 (minor in comparison to book 2), the author needs to do better with the Grammar in the next book or I'll have to stop reading the series.
Second chance and angst books are my favorite. Having read some of Eve Black’s books before (and admittedly stalking the Facebook page) I knew this was going to be so good. And it did not disappoint. The gut punch from the overheard betrayal really has you hurting for Nadia. The fact that she makes Locust work to get her back and does not have bbs or doormat syndrome is even better. I would really love to punch Frost in the face - I cannot wait for his and Emily’s story. One of my favorite stories this year!
One of my new favorites. Eve’s new MC adjacent novel is well written, full of angst, and downright unputdownable. Our heroine Nadia is a lovely woman in EVERY sense of the word and has fallen for Locust whom she finds out started a relationship with her under the guise of finding out info about her stepbrother under orders from his club. In reality he is taken by her and totally in love with her but when she discovers his deception she’s done. Does this couple get their HEA? Read it and see 😉. It’s a 5⭐️ read for me. I received this ARC and am giving my honest review.
The background plot is slow moving, doesn't keep you locked and wondering like the 1st book. The spice was a 2/5. Very few scenes included in the book.
I don’t even want to do a full review bc I feel like I already spent enough time on this. I expected a good grovel and this was not it. What MMC said and did was horrible and FMCs inner monologues were redundant and pathetic.
This is the 2nd book in The Unchained Heart series. You don't have to read Affliction first to read this one but as always you miss a bit about the other characters in the book if you don't. This is a fun, light, slightly naughty biker book. It does have angst and betrayal between the H and h. No cheating or OW drama. There is a bit amount of internal dialogue. Which for me I like hearing how someone thinks. It helps understand where their actions are coming from. Definitely worth the read! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I feel like this author dislikes larger women. She is constantly fat shaming. Also MMC stalks FMC, hiding cameras in her house and watching her. Not sexy or romantic.
James/Locust is a biker initially sent to investigate Nadia, whose stepbrother stole some money the MC president wants. They think she has access to the money, but after 5 months of thorough "investigation" (mostly consisting of his investigations into her genitals, from what I can figure) he has no leads. We're supposed to believe that Locust has fallen in luuuurv with Nadia over the course of those months together and that it isn't about the MC anymore for him. He's all in, wants to fill the world with silly love songs, well what's wrong with that, he'd like to know, cuz here he goes agaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnn...
Or something.
But then he takes Nadia to a party at the clubhouse, something I suspect is related to the events from the first book since there was clearly some stuff going on off-page (but unlike some other intertwined books I've read lately, I didn't feel like I was missing out). The book actually opens with the two of them having vigorous sex in his club room. The next morning, she comes downstairs to find him and hears him talking to another club member.
And hoooooo boy, does she ever.
Not enough attention was given to that very humiliating conversation Nadia heard. By the end of the book I was less concerned with him falling in love with her while investigating her than I was with what he said about her and the way he totally disrespected her. In the end, all we got was something about him being embarrassed around his club mate.
Bitch, what?
You told someone that you had to drink to have sex with her, joked about popping Viagra to get it up with her, talked about how after the job was done, you'd come back to the club to find someone who actually knew how to pleasure you, joked about her body size, her personality, and if you'd been given the chance, probably would have started in on her mama. And that's just the stuff I remember off the top of my head.
I honestly expected that the reason would have to do with him expecting the other club member to have been a mole and he was protecting her by making the guy think she meant nothing to him. That's usually what these incredibly insulting books do. There was even a seed planted that was how it would go because he thinks something about how the club member was being way too nosy about a job that didn't include him. But no, toward the end of the book Locust tells Nadia he was actually embarrassed by her, but it's cool because he's not anymore and see, how he's taking her out on dates in front of people and stuff? And it somehow gets glossed over in favor of him sleeping with her to investigate her over the course of the book. That is a motivation I can forgive in an MC romance hero, especially if he's falling in love with her during that time. Disrespecting someone you allegedly can't live without because you're embarrassed by your feelings for her? Nope. Weaksauce.
She breaks it off with him, and over the course, busts up the Prez's marriage too in the process -- it's okay, looks like that marriage needed a little busting given his behavior over the course of this book. But almost immediately she gets that super annoying romance voice in her head saying how he really loved her. And again, if it had just been about the investigation, I'd have been okay with that voice. But he was actively cruel in that conversation with his buddy. If she'd focused on what she overheard more than the 5 months of dating, I think Nadia would have probably moved on. Unfortunately, that's not what the plot has in mind, and in my opinion, is why the characters in this book gloss over the disrespect he showed her due to his (I guess) embarrassment of being with her. As a result, we get some serious BBS (body betrayal syndrome) from Nadia while Locust stalks her under the guise of protecting her (turns out step-bro is back and so are his money problems) and winning her back. And just, ugh. If you're going to have your character be that awful to the woman he loves for no real reason, I really need the book to focus more on that.
The book needed some serious editing. Things weren't so much misspelled, more like spell-checked incorrectly. We got "It" in place of "I", or "her" instead of "here" -- that kind of thing. I didn't get the impression that the author had a second set of eyes on it. If she had, I also feel like there would have been more feedback on dropped plot lines and ahem misplaced focus.
There was potential for a good story and even some good writing here, which is why I rounded up to 3 stars instead of down to 2, but a lot of issues. I will definitely give the author another chance, especially since I hear she's good at gut-punch followed by grovel (this one didn't make the "good grovel" cut despite being pretty much all grovel, but I'm willing to try again given her rep in some of the reader groups I'm in), but I'll keep expectations low.

There were a few missing words, misused words, confusing sentences, etc... and the punctuation! OH! MY! GOD! The amount of ! I swear.
That aside, it was another long feeling short book because it literally went nowhere for most of it. Just her living through her issues and their breakup. I thought a few times something would've happened but nothing really did. The worst thing is that there is no way Locust/James words from the beginning of the book where he's talking to Cluster weren't true in a way. I'm sorry but the amount of mean that came out of his mouth definitely had some truth behind it because if he really did love her and find her attractive like the author was trying to make you believe after the fact, he wouldn't have said something that hurtful. He would've brushed Cluster off or something like that but he joked with him and took a lot of it too far.
I was recommended this book because of the groveling and I'm sorry but what fucken groveling? There was nothing. Sure he sent her dinner but it almost seemed more insulting than anything else because a fat chick needs to eat, right? No, there was no groveling unless you are talking about when she was talking about all the groveling mmcs do in books (which is literally none by the way).
I'm sorry to say but I found the story of Frost a lot more interesting than what was going on with Locust and whatever her name is (yeah, I was just reading the book and don't remember her name at all, that's how forgettable she is). Oh wait, Nadia, that's her name. I almost forgot but then I remembered the scene where she slipped into an angry teenager and attempted to embarrass him by talking about him jerking off... Seriously, the fuck was that about? That wasn't her being a bad ass bitch, that was her being immature. The author could've tried harder to put herself in that situation and see the real hurt that was supposed to be behind the character. Instead of insulting his dick size or him jerking it, she could've just yelled at him to get his hands off her and that she wasn't going with him now or ever. Nope, instead let's just have this girl embarrass herself some more.
She may have been head over heels in love with him but he wasn't in love with her. I don't care what the author wrote when it was from his thoughts/point of view, it didn't feel natural at all. It seemed more like his pride was hurt that she broke it off with him than anything else. Why she loved him though? No idea because he wasn't good to her, not at all. I don't know, maybe the author thought the fat girl only needed a good fucking to be happy and considered that love.
That whole scene with her step brother near the end? What was that even anyway? Just a way for the author to make it so Nadia had a reason to forgive Locust because he was helping her step brother get clean? It is bullshit, is what it is. The whole bit about the step-brother was confusing from the beginning and just got worse as the story went on. First he stole money from the cluv, which you are left to believe was Locust's club but it turns out it was one they obsorbed/took over (still unclear about that), then he was somehow in trouble with the mob but it wasn't just money, it was pictures of something that he had on his phone for blackmail? As if the first part wasn't enough... and that they just fixed it so the mob would leave him alone also didn't make sense but whatever...
It wasn't a fantastic read, it was hardly even a good read but I read it all the same and much like a lot of the other books I've read lately it was disappointing and a waste of my time.

I liked this a lot. The characters were well developed. Nadia is exactly the h I was asking for, a BBW completely comfortable with herself. James/Locust was all in with her and stuck between a rock and a hard place.
James was sent by the Prez Frost to get close to Nadia (including seducing if needed) to get information about her step-brother who stole some money from the disbanded MC who were patching over to Unchained. He pretty much fell for her from the start and they've been together for 6 months. Of course he has found nothing because the money is long gone. There are reasons they might suspect her but you get that information early on.
A couple of things. Definitely needs proof reading for spelling/grammar and since I've read book 4 already ages and timelines don't match up with what is in book four for Em and Frost.
Nadia overhears a conversation between James and a brother where he crudely and cruelly disparages her. He doesn't mean it and it is so bad it just destroys her. For the plot, the things had to be said and they are tied to misguided loyalty and guilt. This is all revealed later.
So they are pretty much broke up for most the book but there are great insights into what their relationship was like, hard conversations lots of sadness as he tries to fix what he has destroyed. Nadia is just an overall great heroine and I love how she handled herself. They have to have hard conversations and have to work to where they are able to have them. And he does the work.
Ultimately, he makes a grand gesture where he is willing to sacrifice everything he has and holds dear for her and it was epic.
?TWO AND A HALF STARS This story wasn't too awful, but for me, it wasn't that good either. I love that this author is dipping her toes into the genres she is, but..... I have a hard time visualizing these EXTREMELY SHALLOW, gorgeous Greek God looking bikers who spend their entire lives banging the sexiest, most beautiful club whores available, suddenly falling in love with someone so overweight. And it's not her personality. He literally falls in love with her chubbiness. This heroine is definitely uncomfortable with her weight, and the Hero absolutely devastated her when she overhears his awful comments about him being so revolted by screwing her the way she looks, did indeed give a devastating, angsty, gut punch. The rest of story itself though, was extremely unbelievable and not all that great.

Nadia and Locust (James) were introduced in the first book. Locust is the enforcer of the MC while Nadia is a plus sized woman that likes wearing ruffled skirts.
Their relationship is sweet and wonderful. At least until Nadia overhears the truth. She was actually a target of the MC; turns out her stepbrother owes the wrong people money. Club President Frost ordered Locust to get close to Nadia and search for the stepbrother and a link to the money. So the true love and wonder that Nadia has been swimming in is nothing but a lie.
Or is it?
Turns out Locust was only running his mouth. He's in love with Nadia. Has been since he first saw her. But he completely messed up by hiding the truth from Nadia and making her feel like a worthless, fat mess.
I like that Nadia is smart and reserved with money. She's had experience with people using her and she's careful. She also likes her curves for the most part, though she certainly has moments of self doubt. I do like that she stuck up for herself even if she did sort of welcome the stalking that Locust eventually undertook.
However, the grovel isn't enough. It just isn't.
And the typos. So many typos. Running a document through a spellcheck isn't enough. You need at least a couple sets of eyes to edit. It's frustrating.
First - I’ll be honest…. Despite reading the first book, I still struggled with the who’s who… 🤦♀️
Second - loved it! I normally power through a book and finish it. However, I often struggle to remember the details. This one was taken at a slower pace and it made it all the more enjoyable.
I almost cried when she overheard the conversation. Then, was laughing like a lunatic at the window and bar scene. Then back to almost crying with every self destructive thought.
I had moments where I wanted to throw my kindle. Other times, I just put it away, because I was just too frustrated.
Third - despite being in a series, you can get away with standalone. It’s definitely better with Patriot’s story, and boy does it set up for the next couple of books.
Finally - just give it a go. A relatively quick, somewhat emotional MC adjacent book that will have you alternating between sad, pissed off and amused. Well written, paced and not too many errors on my end (and believe me, I can nitpick with the best of them!)
Well done author, you’re very quickly becoming a one-click for me.
I honestly couldn’t stand Nadia. I know it’s only in her thoughts but the amount of BBS going on in her mind after he literally said the most cruel things was very sad and I hate to say it but pathetic. All this before he even apologized or explained things. She was lusting after James/locust after the overheard betrayal (before the grovel) and even called herself pathetic for this many times. Her self esteem was very low. This is my first book from the author so I’m not sure if there are other books for the MC characters but they all sound like huge idiots.
James is part of an mc. The prez told him to get info from Nadia but any means possible including sleeping with her which he did. She overhears him saying he has to get drunk just to have sex with her and lots of other very mean things. Apparently her brother stole some money from an associated club and they are hellbent on getting it back. She finds out the scheme after listening to the overheard betrayal. Still pines after him. Calls him when her closet is rummaged through and he “protects” her from her loser step brother that she STILL wants a relationship with after everything he did to her as well.
I know I always say this but...this is my favorite Eve Black book!
This is an overheard, uncovered betrayal romance, and the betrayal was a freaking gut punch. Ooof! I could FEEL Nadia's pain when she overheard Locust talk about the plan to fake a relationship with her to get deets on her brother and some missing money. The devastation made my tummy ache. Locust was an asshole for tricking Nadia, but from his POV it was obvious he truly loved her, he was just an asshole for hiding the truth from her. My favorite part was when she escaped and then sabotaged his bike so he couldn't follow--the petty was glorious!
The way he stalked her, watched over her, and kept poking into her life was cute, and the way he proved to her that he loved her made me cry a little. This book has all the feels.
I am super excited about the other books in this series, especially about Frost and Emily. I'm curious about what's up with Redtube, and Tornado and Tasha....
This was a GREAT read! Well done, again, Ms. Black!
When Nadia overhears Locust telling one of his MC brothers how he really feels about her it breaks her heart. She thought she had finally found someone who wanted her for her. To find out she was an assignment that the Prez assigned to him was one more blow to her. The one good thing about Nadia was that she didn't take it lying down. She chewed him and his Prez out, in the long run it still a hurt she couldn't run away from. Locust didn't want to do the assignment to deceive Nadia. The minute he met her he fell hard and fast. He felt like he owed his Prez and he didn't know what to do. He hoped that she would never find out the part he played in deceiving her but his words were heard and she ran. Locust did everything to win her back, even going so far as to leaving the MC for Nadia to finally realize what she meant to him. I can't wait for Frost book because at the moment he is an awful Prez and I hope he can be redeemed because at this moment he is unlikable. The fact that he is giving more attention to a sweetbutt than his own family is telling.
