If you're looking for advice about how to manage change in your career, especially when the change is unexpected and unwanted, look no further than "Wait, What?!..." Emma Toops new book.

Whether intentional or not, every one of us goes through periods of change in our lives. The outcome - success or failure - relies on understanding what you can and cannot control. You first need to identify the particular factors that define your change. Then it's up to you to influence that which you can't control, Emma writes.

"Wait, What?!..." provides a blueprint especially helpful for younger people planning or establishing their career path. The framework outlined, however, is applicable to anyone facing a life change. "If you don't own your transition and try to create the future you want, you must endure the future you get," Emma warns.

Unlike many career planning books that are full of sounds-good advice for success but no context to apply it, Emma provides practical, relatable examples from her own successful career.

She ends each chapter with "Things for you to do or consider." She offers solid steps to follow as you plan changes that will lead to your own successful future. I highly recommend this new book by Emma Toops for inspiration and for specific strategies on how to plan and execute a career or life change no matter what kind of challenge you face.

I am the author, so my rating is a bit biased. Lol

But, I hope my remarks in this "review" provide some perspective and insight into my purpose for writing Wait, What?! and what I hope you gain from reading it.

First, the date ranges for the start and finish of the "first read" represent the period I started and finished the manuscript (i.e. before it was handed off to professional editors).

So, the "second read" in May 2024 was when I read the entire edited book for the first time.

Second, Wait, What?! is my first book, a non-fiction hybrid of personal development and memoir. It is the first long-form narrative that I've ever written.

My writing had previously been short-form (e.g., emails, social media), academic (e.g., graduate-level papers), or business-related (e.g., magazine or newsletter articles).

I wrote Wait, What?! to teach and inspire.

It contains technical instruction that provides the steps and concepts for the Success Formula and the Transition Puzzle Paradigm. These strategic and tactical frameworks help focus your thoughts, plans, and actions.

My stories, which provide examples of the Formula and Paradigm in practice, are from when I was a young adult going to Airborne and Air Assault Schools and starting a new military career.

I hope that you learn from my experience that whether you already have goals and plans for your future, much of what you will encounter and experience may very likely not be what you expect.

However, if you are self-aware, you can control at least one part of anything—yourself.

My hope is that you own your transitions and that you influence what you can for the rest of the things you cannot control.
