Wolves in Springfield

Rate this book
After the Union's devastating loss at Chancellorsville, the few surviving men of the 23 Illinois Regiment find themselves separated from the bulk of the Union army and behind Confederate lines. Alone and tired, this ragged band desperately try to make it back into friendly territory. With danger at every crossroad, they find themselves hunkered down at an old farmhouse, unaware the prior tenants have not moved on. One-by-one, the men of the 23 Regiment are cut down by beasts only spoken of in campfire stories.
Within hours, the remainder of the regiment is decimated and only Johnathan Burrow survives, but barely. Bitten by a monster, part wolf, part man, he is rescued by Union soldiers and finds himself discharged and sent back home to Springfield, Illinois.
He is welcomed home by his community with open arms. But the full moon is soon upon him, and Johnathan is thrust into a change that heals his broken body and creates a werewolf that terrorizes the growing community.
As the weeks pass, Johnathan must come to terms with being a monster of legend, yet still hold onto his family life. His task is made more difficult by Mark Roberts, a man spoiled by wealth, who is jealous of the war hero.
The battles Johnathan fought in the Union army could not prepare him for the battles ahead of him in the coming nights. The full moon brings with it another werewolf created by his own hands. The realizations become clear that he cannot let that beast or any other, even his own dark form, threaten the land and the ones who he loves.

Discovering books at an early age, Shawn grew to love the written word. Every genre was a new take on life. The realms of fantasy with its strong heroes and magical dragons called to him, while suspense and horror with its intriguing heroes and villains showed all of twists and turns that life held. Then again, late Saturday nights watching Creature Feature on Channel 18 with his dad, left memories that would help him turn into the writer that he is today.
In 2010, Shawn published his first novel, Sense of Honor, and its sequel, Dragon’s Chest. Turning what was originally to be a standalone novel into a series, The Tides of War. Also in 2010, Shawn co-authored Ripper’s Row, with Donnie Light.
2011 brought the third installment in The Tides of War series, The Dark Caravan, and the second novel in the Ripper Trilogy, Ripper’s Revenge which he again co-authored with Donnie Light.
In 2012 Shawn stepped alone into the world of horror with Little Valley and Wolves in Springfield.
2013 saw the third installment in the Ripper Trilogy, Ripper’s Wrath, again co-authored with Donnie Light. As well as all three novels in one complete edition, The Ripper Trilogy. Welcome to Plainfield, a paranormal suspense story based off of evidence recovered by Shawn’s paranormal research team, Ghost Hunt America on an investigation on the murderer - Ed Gein, And the fourth installment in the Tides of War series, Rose Marie.

I settled down on Thursday to read Wolves in Springfield, a horror by Shawn Weaver, and by Friday night I had finished it.

From the start I was gripped, every click of my kindle to turn the page, I was waiting to read what would happen. Like watching my own little horror movie, not wanting to click as I knew something would happen that would make me cringe with fear and jump, but also wanting to know what would happen and I wasn’t disappointed!

The whole of the book kept me wanting more, there was nothing in it that dragged, even the less suspenseful side of it. Oh I tell a lie, there is one thing that I was disappointed with, that was when I had finished It was a great ending, but I wanted to keep going, such was the quality of the book.

Shawn’s writing is like James Herbert, leaving the reader wanting to keep going but sometimes reluctant to turn the page to reveal what horror comes next.

I often like to give a weighed opinion with good and bad points but to be honest I couldn’t find anything bad to say.

I think that you need to read it for yourself and I recommend Wolves in Springfield

I am so looking forward to reading more books written by Shawn and when I do, I shall be following up with a review for you all
