This book covers a huge variety of bonsai concepts and techniques, with great pictures to help explain.

I like the structure and writing and will likely be gifting this to friends who are wanting to get more serious about their bonsai craft.

The Essential Bonsai Book is a well written and beautifully photographed course on creating and curating a bonsai collection written by Jonas Dupuich. Released 15th April 2025 by Penguin Random House on their Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press imprint. It's 224 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout.

The book is a more in-depth monograph on bonsai aimed at keen intermediate level to expert gardeners. There is an abbreviated introduction followed by training, pruning, care, and maintenance with emphasis on carrying out the correct procedure at the right time. The photography is standout, with "action" photos which are clear and without obscuring tools or hands in the way. In fact the entire book is beautifully photographed with an accessible and understandable graphic layout.

Gorgeous gorgeous bonsai in all their glory, showing a wide variety of species trained into both traditional and modern silhouettes. Worthwhile and inspirational.

Five stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Full Disclosure: Goodreads Giveaway Winner

In this picture filled book, Dupuich explains the basics of training a bonsai. Each chapter explains a technique until the last two which are case studies. First, small case studies that illustrate using the techniques previously explained, while the last chapter uses one tree to explain a one year (well, just a bit longer) journey with the same bonsai, along with the vision for future care.

At the end of each chapter is a spotlight on a different bonsai expert, usually with a specialty of the topic of the chapter.

No review of this book would be complete without mentioning the amazing photography of the many, many trees either in before/after shots, or showing different angles of the same feature.

A glossary would have been useful because some of the words used are just not familiar to a bonsai novice, or because some terms appear chapters later and the meaning has been lost in new terms.

Great introductory bonsai book that has some unique material from other introductory bonsai books that I've read. Some of this unique material includes the sections on 1) bonsai design; I've picked this up online but don't think I've never seen it succinctly outlined in book form (I know books on bonsai design exist out there, I just haven't read them.), 2) the seasonal care calendar on p. 55; I've learned this through online gleaning but it's nice to have a 1-page summary , and 3) summer and winter care; an entire chapter is dedicated to this.

I've always been impressed by how well spoken and thoughtful Jonas Dupuich has been on podcasts; this book is likewise thoughtfully and well written. It's a good choice if you're looking for an introductory book, although there are also some things for non-beginners; I learned a few things about wiring, for instance, and it has some well organized info on growing Japanese black pine, if I decide to go there.

give good instruction for TRADITIONAL bonsai & bonsai methods. If you are looking for information on using tropical plants, succulents, or non-traditional material (like native US trees) this book won't be of much help. I think this could have been a 5 star book if the author would have included some of this instead of focusing on the Chinese/Japanese species that every other bonsai book uses.

Final thoughts are: borrow from library, friend or bonsai club if they have it before adding it to your personal library.

The book is fascinating for the clear overall techniques and the beautiful photography supporting the use of those techniques. Some very wonderful positives: it has a glossary of terms in the first pages; it can be used by those considering doing Bonsai up to experts, it covers design, pruning, wiring, defolianting, caring, watering & fertilizing plus tips.. The photography corresponds so well with the writing- it's inspiring.

Fantastic introductory material on not just techniques, but the theory of why certain design elements work.
